Over our adult lifetimes, my wife and I have been owned by no-less-than ten cats. My wife and I are approaching end-of-life and are now looking for a suitable environment for our three-cats. We've had four of our cats achieve twenty-two calendar years in age. Our cats are treated as co-habitants in our home. I leave out a bowl of Hill's Science Diet dry food all the time for my indoor cat, Kismet, because I live alone. I figure if I'm ever in an accident, and can't return home right away, at least he has that along with his large water bottle nearby. I adopted him as a kitten in August of 2014 and have always done it. I feed him wet food every morning, now mixed with about 6 teaspoons of water that has (generic) Miralax in it. He started having some constipation issues in late 2020 which the vet attributed to his somewhat narrow colon. I prepare a large resealable plastic container of this solution every few weeks. It helps him have very productive poops and also provides extra water in his diet. I do keep his water container separated from his food bowls because that's what cats prefer. I took him in for his first-ever dental cleaning last April. The vet said his teeth and gums were fine. He has otherwise been very healthy, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll still be around for at least another decade. He's a very smart and loving cat who always gets excited whenever I have friends visiting my house. One person who has three cats once told me he wished his cats were as sweet and friendly as Kismet is. I'm 70 and have always been healthy, never having spent as much as a night in the hospital my entire life, so I feel very lucky having Kismet as my companion.

My cats actually like scented litter and have been using it regularly without problems ever since I had a blind cat who couldn't find his way to the box, prompting me to get scented to see if that made a difference (and it did because he could smell it then). Basically the kind of litter you get will be different based on your specific cat. Every cat is like a person, they have preferences. It's up to YOU to find what your cat likes and stick to that because cats like and thrive on routine.
Surely the blind cat could smell the litter trays??? Even without scented litter, normal litter has a scent, not to mention pee and poo…very strange….I mean it worked for you so that’s good but I find it strange….could he not find anything else in your home? Cos he had to find his bed and find his way to each room surely…but he didn’t find the way to the litter tray?
When my cat used my scented pads to cover his poop, I knew it was time to get him scent beads for his litter. I watch him closely to ensure it's a scent he actually likes.
My cats dont mind at least one scented litter. But i have to say its mild. I can barely notice it. But surely the cats do. The poor things propably used to all the perfume im wearing.
My cat trained me on her litter box.Cats are excessively clean and care a lot about personal hygiene. When she went to the litter box, in the bathroom, she would come first and call me, to make sure I cleaned up right away. On the rare occasion when I didn't, the cat used another place to defecate itself. The same with the place to eat or sleep, if we wanted the cat to use them.
Mine is 14 yrs old and in excellent health (strictly an indoor pussycat)- and NO, I am NOT brushing his teeth. I'm pretty sure there is NO WAY he would stand for that, and if his teeth haven't rotted in 14 yrs, I'm not worried about it.
My cat passed this year at the age of 18. We always had the food out and she really only ate when she needed to, she wasn't fat, in fact she was quite athletically thin, sadly she gave up on eating near the end, I bought all kinds of different foods and fish hoping to get her eating again.

My cat pretty much ignores toys. She has a kitty condo w/ scratching post and pad. She uses the condo, but she does care about the "entertainment" stuff attached to it. 🤷🏼♂️ She has several BOXES 📦 tho.
I have an issue with point 1. I am a eldery man with medical issues that may have paramedic response. And the have. I may be away from home for possibly a couple days or more. I have no one to check up on her. So I leave enough food and bottled water out just in case. I have had her for six years. I adoped her as a rescue. She is now 14 years old. She was 10 lbs at the time of adoption and has ganed only 1 lb snce. She is currently back to 10 lbs. She self regulates fine. But she always has food open whenever she wants some. Maybe the breed makes a difference? She is a domestic short hair Bombay cat.
I hope you are feeling well. It seems you provide well for your cat if there is an emergency but maybe have someone like a hospital social worker contacted in case of prolonged care or heaven forbid you are not able to communicate with others if not able to return home, so the cat is not left to starve. Most hospitals have a social worker attached, or you could have a prominent note left in your medical history to alert someone of the problem. Nurses are usually very helpful to pass messages on to other staff. Be well.

I'm totally against all dry food all the time for both cats AND dogs, & I believe it's a "people thing" because (1) it's easier to pour dry food into a dish & much easier to clean the dish & (2) getting wet food out of a can & mushing it up & then having to clean the dish is more work. Yes, dry food is a more people-convenient thing. Also, dry food is much higher in carbs -- a real bad choice as a regular diet. Dry food should be a "once-in-awhile" thing. The great Dr. Jeff TV vet is totally against all dry food & says it's contributing to kidney & urinary problems. And most cats love that "soupy" type of wet food w-the extra liquid. Thanks.
Yeah my cat refuses to eat wet food. I've tried different brands and types. He just walks up to it, sniffs it, then walks away. He does like soups and the Inaba type treats. So no in my house it isn't for the convenience of people. I make sure he has clean water daily. He does drink water every day.
@@virginiacaston1456 What about pâté? That isn't really wet food. But any animal that is on hard food constantly requires more water & will drink more -- the dry food causing that need. With wet food having liquid, the need for the body to have water lessens. They are all different.
@@carolhayar3037 No he won't eat pate either. We have tried them all. He will eat things that are more fluid like the lickable type treats or soup type. Nothing thick or chunky.
Inre the litter box, I'm the same way as cats. If the toilet is in a noisy, busy area I will just poop on the floor. I don't get invited to parties much anymore.
Hey everyone, I took a 4 foot long and 8 Inch cardboard tube and cut it 30 inches long then screwed some 2 x 2s on it so it doesn't roll then cut a few 4 inch holes and a few 2 inch holes around it and my cats have a blast playing in it and I am thinking about covering it with carpet.
Also it should be talked about more, essential oils and air fresheners are extremely bad for cats, don't burn candles or oil burners either, what might be a nice smell for us can be poisonous to a cat
I have water in every room for my cat. The poor boy has a rare form of diabetes . Because he drinks a lot, i have litter boxes scattered round the house. Its a constant job changing them a couple of times each day. Later he will become inconvenient. There's no cure. 😢
I get mice that come through the water pipe holes in the floor under the sink, in the bathroom Which is a problem with all manufactured homes. She loves when one comes out and gets to hunt it. She will watch for it to come out when she hears one under the bathroom cabinet.
I've been with cats ever since I was about 2 years old and you can put out four litter boxes for four cats and they all will use the Box until it is full and then go to the next one they have no problem sharing a litter box I've got 12 cats in my home and two litter boxes I keep it very clean that is a definite thing that needs to be done but the cats do use the same litter boxes and yes my cats are my babies they are not just my companion for a animal or a friend they are my babies they sleep with me when they want to they're the boss of their selves when it comes time for them to eat I keep food out at all times but they come to me and want me to come and stand around them while they eat so they know that I know they're eating and no I have food out 24/7 and they do not eat 24/7 say it about three times a day. They don't eat just cuz it's there they don't eat all the time they're smart enough to know that the food is there for them all day long if they want it and it keeps them from wanting to worry about being hungry because they know they can get to it when they want it
All the cats are my boss they know when and what needs to be done and they let me know it instantly. It's nonsense you don't need to put a litter box for each cat it's just downright people being lazy by doing that and after each and every one of them get full they still crap on the floor just be a good animal person and clean their litter boxes often if you have two litter boxes and 12 cats Ardmore cleaner more often my cats do 100% what their litter boxes clean when they want them clean and they let me know that I had a cat that I treated like a baby and used the toilet by making it its own way he died at age 28 years old so I must have been doing something right and he lived with 45 cats while I was living in California people were home off and I pick them up and give him a home with me I had a two-story home and there was 45 cats in my home and I had the Humane Society come by one day and he was so proud to see my house very clean and only had one litter box for them all I just kept up with the daily and yes I like to send it cuz it smells better and the cats like it better to they won't use any other box of litter other than scoop away as well as the one woman stated cast know what they want they're not stupid animals they're very intelligent actually they are more intelligent than most human beings
I hwve two cats One wont eat wet food, The other wont eat kibble They eat what they want and let us know We cant not feed kibble just because Neither liked unscented litter
I had to laugh at the cat fountains. I have 4 indoor cats and tried three different fountains. None of the cats even got near them. I gave them to the thrift store. Total waste of money. They do drink out of my 4 wide low stainless steel bowls.
I had to lay on my dining room floor and have my cat watch me drink out of the fountain first. He looked at me like I was a complete lunatic - but he started using it after a day or two and he now loves it!
We have 3 cats, 2 litter boxes. One is in a super quiet, private location. All 3 rarely use it. They prefer 1 box. We have a friend who has 7 cats. She tried 3 litter boxes but all 7 preferred just 2. So this idea that there should be 1 box per cat plus 1 is nonsense. Your cats will decide what they want.
@patwagner9308 - Absolutely. I had 2 cats, 1 box. & even if it wasn't always spotless, there never was an issue. We have to learn about our individual animal's behavior & adjust accordingly.
@carolhayar3037 Carol, that's right. We haven't ever had a problem either. Our 3 cats have 2 boxes. All 3 prefer 1 particular box. The other litter box goes for weeks, sometimes, w/ none of them using it. I scoop out the box they all use twice a day. No complaints from any of them. Cats will let us know what they want. Thank you for replying to me. I appreciate it. 😊
Mix in dry. If that works, gradually decrease the wet & increase the dry food. For whatever reason, my cat is low maintenance. She eats wet. She eats dry. AND she drinks water regularly, too. Her poops 💩 don’t stink either, but she buries them.
Really? 100% wet food? I have always fed my cats dry food, I don't like the smell of wet food & I don't want my cat to have soft stools or diarrhea. It has never been an issue. This is a great video & I agree every cat is different. Thanks & God bless all of us & our babies! (kitty kitty)! 😊
It's not a matter of the owner of the animal being lazy and just feeding them dry food because they're too lazy to open a can or clean a dish. It's what the animal will eat and stay healthy eating it.
Vet visits are too expensive. I have 2 rescues and have to resort to limited vet care. Vet care is getting so expensive they are not adopting . So many homeless cats and ignorant breeders are bringing new cats into the world w/ the cat having multiple pregnancies. 😖😖😖😖
I know vets so expensive…my cat had vomited for the past week, she just stopped 2 days ago but I didn’t go to the vet this time…last time I did they charged me for visit, blood test and 2 meds and it was expensive and I didn’t have that kind of money at the moment. I’m keeping her monitored tho and if I need to take her I will ultimately…but I think vets should be a little bit cheaper…also bc they rarely tell you what the problem is, they stop the vomiting of fever or eye infection like in my case but they never know what caused it and it’s frustrating
How do yall brush your cat's teeth? Mine wont let me go anywhere near his teeth. He even bites me and goes berserk when I try to trim his nails. He used to be soooo sweet but now he is a jerk lol. (he is 11 months old)
@@CPotatoPlant "Nature of the beast" as the saying goes will most likely determine how much you can do. I could not even brush or comb her, had to give her treats to get near her & then she would hiss, slap, etc. & that began when she was 9 wks. old. She also did not like being picked up or held. My cat prior to her was in heaven & looked forward to a long combing sessions. No guarantees.

@@funnypet_house Of course I tried the treat thing. But again, each animal is different. I fact just the other night after I took a shower I was going to bed and four of them was where I sleep and I was going to sleep on the other side of the bed but they all moved and I had a warm bed, I really like the entertainment they provide.
My cat pretty much ignores toys. She has a kitty condo w/ scratching post and pad. She uses the condo, but she does care about the "entertainment" stuff attached to it. 🤷🏼♂️ She has several BOXES 📦 tho.
This video made my day! 😻 Do you plan to explore more creative themes around cats? Your style is so unique, and I’d love to see more! 🐕
I'm happy you enjoyed! 💜
Yes, I will! 😸
Be well.
I leave food out for my cat too. No diabetes. But yes urinary stones.
@@cultureal9544 Access to drinking water located other than at the feeding station might help with the urinary problem if lack of hydration is the cause.
Some cats do not like to drink where they eat.
My cat love to drink out of the sink or tub.
@@wrightleila21 Mine too did like the running faucet. I took video of her drinking. I watched a video of a leopard drinking at one of the dams -- for a total of 7 minutes -- taking only one break for 2 seconds because she thought she heard something. And a lion for almost 5 minutes straight.
Love this video ❤..thanks ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😸💜
My 2 cats like fine sand likw litter but a friend said it may cause respiratory issues if they breathe it in. They only use the classic litter when it's the only option. Bought the wood type animal litter pellets to try
Thanks.
My cat will not touch wet food, even the expensive ones that say they contain no carbohydrates or fillers, literally 100% meat!!
@@rivierasusan6650 Yup, every animal is different. Mine did not like paté no matter how much I smashed it up. Same with my neighbor's cat.
😂
@@earlenehines3172😅😅😅😅
Hey everyone, I took a 4 foot long and 8 Inch cardboard tube and cut it 30 inches long then screwed some 2 x 2s on it so it doesn't roll then cut a few 4 inch holes and a few 2 inch holes around it and my cats have a blast playing in it and I am thinking about covering it with carpet.
Also it should be talked about more, essential oils and air fresheners are extremely bad for cats, don't burn candles or oil burners either, what might be a nice smell for us can be poisonous to a cat
Diffusers with sticks are poisonous as well the free standing ones
I have water in every room for my cat. The poor boy has a rare form of diabetes . Because he drinks a lot, i have litter boxes scattered round the house. Its a constant job changing them a couple of times each day. Later he will become inconvenient. There's no cure. 😢
My cats bday-adoption day was on the 14th an shes somewhere 11 or 13 yrs old
it gets harder to remember the older they ge. Got my new one in 1-2020 so its easier to remember.
@ELBlDu well been probably around '16 but she was 5yrs
Excellent video!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😸💜
I get mice that come through the water pipe holes in the floor under the sink, in the bathroom Which is a problem with all manufactured homes. She loves when one comes out and gets to hunt it. She will watch for it to come out when she hears one under the bathroom cabinet.
My cat IS my baby!
Some of these do's and don'ts depend on the particular cat.
I have 2 cats and 2 litter trays and it’s funny cos my cats use 1 tray to poop in and other tray to pee, both of them
my cat is small and slim and always has food out. not all cats become obese when there is continuous availability of food. Many cats are different.
I hwve two cats
One wont eat wet food,
The other wont eat kibble
They eat what they want and let us know
We cant not feed kibble just because
Neither liked unscented litter
I had to laugh at the cat fountains. I have 4 indoor cats and tried three different fountains. None of the cats even got near them. I gave them to the thrift store. Total waste of money. They do drink out of my 4 wide low stainless steel bowls.
I had to lay on my dining room floor and have my cat watch me drink out of the fountain first. He looked at me like I was a complete lunatic - but he started using it after a day or two and he now loves it!
Just like people, every cat is different. What's right for one may not work for another.
How can you feed a cat that will not eat any type of wet food at all ?
Mix in dry. If that works, gradually decrease the wet & increase the dry food. For whatever reason, my cat is low maintenance. She eats wet. She eats dry. AND she drinks water regularly, too. Her poops 💩 don’t stink either, but she buries them.
Even tuna or salmon?
Cats food should be 100% wet food!
Says who?
Im trying to get my new shelter cat to eat wet and she just won’t touch it. I’ve tried mixing it with her dry, but nope
@@DrakeN-ow1imexperts in cat nutrition.
Really? 100% wet food? I have always fed my cats dry food, I don't like the smell of wet food & I don't want my cat to have soft stools or diarrhea. It has never been an issue. This is a great video & I agree every cat is different. Thanks & God bless all of us & our babies! (kitty kitty)! 😊
My Cat's like triple screen for their litter
@@yoursugarismineUnfortunately it's become a luxury to have a cat or dog 😕 I have both. They're like my children 😃
My cat licks gravy from canned cat food 70 $ month😂
Mine too. They sit and wait on me to open their can so they can lick it and walk away lol
"Extending lifespan" vs. quality of life
Every animal is different.
How do yall brush your cat's teeth? Mine wont let me go anywhere near his teeth. He even bites me and goes berserk when I try to trim his nails. He used to be soooo sweet but now he is a jerk lol. (he is 11 months old)
i train my cat, try looking cat training videos up. can help so much when you need to trim nails and brush teeth
@@CPotatoPlant "Nature of the beast" as the saying goes will most likely determine how much you can do. I've have many cats over the yrs. & my last one (who had to be put to sleep last yr. age 15) would not let me go near her for a # of things. I could not even brush or comb her, had to give her treats to get near her & then she would hiss, slap, etc. & that began when she was 9 wks. old. She also did not like being picked up or held. My cat prior to her was in heaven & looked forward to a long combing sessions. No guarantees.
Sounds like your cat has fully embraced his teenage rebellion phase! 😹✨ Mine acts like I’m plotting world domination every time I bring out the nail clippers. Have you tried distracting him with treats or a cat toothbrush that tastes like chicken? 🐾 What’s everyone else’s secret?
@@funnypet_house Of course I tried the treat thing. But again, each animal is different. And what does it tell you about temperament when you have to bring your cat 1/2 hr. early to the vet so they give it a bit of sedation in order to work on it. But she was AMAZING when it came to the litter box - let me know she needed to use it but waited nearby & watched as I cleaned up a bit, then went in to use it.
@@carolhayar3037 Wow, she sounds like a cat full of personality-rebellious when it comes to grooming but a total angel with the litter box! 😹🐾 It’s amazing how they have their own rules for what they’ll tolerate. Maybe she’s just setting boundaries like a queen! Have you tried experimenting with different brushes or even a fingertip brush to ease her into it? Also, the litter box story deserves its own medal-what a thoughtful diva! 😂
My vet said that cats need wet food,My cats always have water.
I leave food for my cat all day long but she only eats when she is hungry
The cats here have food out 24/7. They go out and hunt too.
My 5 month old kitten only eat hine made food ...
My cat is blind how can I enrich his life?
My cat only gets wet food.

Sorry but disagree with most of your points.
Then you haven’t watched Jackson Galaxy. This guy is basically reiterating what Jackson says.
I thought this would be redundant but I actually learned a lot from this video. Thanks 🫶
