Someone like me who.wants a good looking lawn but deals with being on disability benefits and a fixed income makes alot of things not feasible. Mr. Hane, I'm very new to lawn care and just starting my lawn care journey (approx 1 month now), so please excuse me for my ignorance and long winded but I hope not to stupid of a question. In the last week I've watch probably 10 - 15 videos on lawn striping, and DIY lawn striping kits and to be honest I love how those stripes look on the lawn. I also watch one of you videos, I cant remember which since I've watched quite a few over this last month, but I distinctly remember you saying that mowing is crucial to a healthy lawn and not to always mow in the same direction because you train you lawn to lay down a certain way, and then you gave the example of you taking off you hat and showing how your hair lays a certain way because it's being trained to lay that way due to your hat. So...here's where my inexperience shows --- If lawn striping is about pushing down or bending the grass blade down by a weighted roller to get the nice stripe, and the more you do it the better and sharper the stripe, aren't we doing exactly what you told us not to do in your other video? Did I miss something from another video not yet watched? Can you please clarify this for me? By the way I just watch the video where you, Ryan and Conor came to Utah and visited Snowbird. I hope you enjoyed our beautiful state. You should come visit again in the dead of winter and see the contrast of our beautiful Wasatch mountains with and without snow.
Thanks for doing these. We have been trapped inside for a week with possibly another week to go before the smoke clears here on the west coast. All I can do is watch my lawn get overgrown (can't see much further than the curb accross the street). It is wonderful to see your clear sky. Thanks Allan!
Hey Allen. I have A trick that can stripe just as good as a kit. Just cut the lawn how you want it striped. Then when you are done retrace you’re steps. Turn the blades off and drop the deck down. Just as good as a striping kit. It does take longer though.
Love the podcast! Keep them coming. Thanks for all you do, I'm looking to start making videos up here in the GREAT NORTH WEST, and you are an inspiration. Thank you.
Here in MI, I just got done Dethatch/aerate. I threw down a (TON) of seeds, and covered it with Milorganite/ Peat Moss. Now I'm just watering and hoping for the best.😎
Too bad you didn't get that done a week ago, that 3" of all day everyday would certainly have been a tremendous help in keeping everything wet! It's funny, here in northern Crook County, my Depot has reduced their orders for Milorganite, and started carrying a reduced formula (4-2-0), more expensive bag........? Ecoscraps slow release fertilizer. 45 lb bag, does 2,500 sqft. Seeing the forecast, I didn't have much of an option but to accept it, but man am I still salty, obviously. I mean, there's only about 8 stores between me and the source. And ya, at $350+, I'd say some Unistrut and a few HF rollers would make a fine equivalent for a DIY version. But, when it's for the church. Stay well my friends. I'm curious to hear if this has become a common replacement? This Ecoscraps is from Terrace Brands, out of Vegas. You have to do a comparison video from when you started this project to NOW!!!! Awesome JOB!!! You can even hear the crispy goodness under your feet as you walk on it like at your house.
The best striper I ever had was made out of a floor mat from my sisters old car that was zip tied to the frame under my 36” bobcat ransomes mower. It has lasted for seven years!
John Deere has a brush striping attachment for the X series mower. Attached in the deck, too. I'm tempted to try one. Sure don't want to take my bagger attachment off.
I had thin blade fescue sod laid for our new house in May, started striping since day 1 and have memory grown into it now. I will try cross cut next time and see if I can get that Argyle sock look. 🤣 thanks Allyn.
The Yard Mastery app isn’t showing my daily average soil temp anymore, but it is telling me it’s at an ideal temp for pre-emergent. My soil temp here in SW Florida is still in the mid 80’s.
I have a checkmate on my Timemaster and the stripes are fantastic! My property is pretty steep and with the full sun, my zoysia stripes are deep and strong with a 1.75inch HOC
Normally when I see something about stripes I think GCI Turf and Pete! He is the true striping King. Great video! Watching you with the steering wheel makes me really appreciate my John Deere 930M zero turn. Gotta get me a roller though!
Dethatching is the new trendy thing to do. It's the newest coolest thing since gluten-free. You can't even buy a Sun Joe. I keep trying to tell folks that they don't need to dethatch unless they have thatch. But, as long as people are enjoying their lawn then hey, go nuts. Keep kickin grass ya'll.
Love the salsa music! Stripes look pretty good for warm season grass i think although doesn't bermuda stripe the best out of all the warm season grass. I dont know cool season here, the lawn i got is KBG,Rye and fine fescue mix stripes better than that with just one pass with the mower no striper. Been watching since Indiana for i think like two years before you moved to Florida maybe more, man its been a while
I've only used granules in the past, but I used liquid fertilizer (with seaweed) and iron for the first time with my new backpack sprayer and WOW, I don't think I'm ever going back to granules! So much fun and immediate results. How long does it usually take to see results with liquids like these? I swear my lawn already has a deep green look to it from my application 27 hours ago (and it rained an inch over night) -- I figured it would take 3-5 days to see a difference if it isn't a foliage spray. Big thanks to you for giving me confidence to spray!
Just curious why you did not give the john deere stripe kit a try. I think it works with your model. They have one that goes right behind the deck. It is cheaper...
Hellooo, I'm in NJ and my zoysia has those spots. Hopefully you will do a video soon. Would be great if you included what to do to put a northern zoysia lawn to bed for the winter.
Hey LCN. Maybe it was just me. But the context I got on the video at the end when you displayed the pricing for the Striping kit. You showed it to be 350+. While it may have been the price for that particular unit. Not all of them are that high. Mine was about 100 bucks for the 21 inch checkmate for the Honda Mower. Maybe a slight adjustment for that if you deem it nesseccary. Again maybe its just how I observed the video. Just didn't want that to potentially deter anyone from looking at purchasing one because they are a fantastic unit.
When you strips a lawn with a tractor I find it easier to start in the center going out and cut more like a U so you only have to turn around every other pass. As you cut the U gets larger two of your turns are only 90 degrees instead of 180 which is not easy on a tractor. If you are able to start your U on a drive you can do your 180 turns without backing up.
Al, seriously ... anyone of us would kill to have a lawn that looks like that ... even without the stripes. I remember what this lawn looked like when you started. Beautiful job. I wonder if mowing it earlier in the morning when there is a bit more dew on it would make a difference?
yes for sure the dew didn't help, and also just that the sun was no as high in the sky. I started earlier than normal trying to beat the rain. I'll do more vids upcoming and for sure I will do an update on the progress from the beginning until now.
I went thru the whole process, aerated, scarified, seeded tall fescue to but I forgot the main theme, " throw er down, hope for the best", in other words, I put the seed down too light. So, scarified again, and this time, threw er down ( heavy ), hope for the best! Your going to get spoiled riding on the Deere.
9:35 in is a good picture of your stripe kit installed. I believe the kit is to far away from the back tires and the angle of the kit has most of the weight forward of the kit rather than down on the kit. I believe the speed you are going at combined with the angle of the kit is the reason why the results are not as vivid. See My video Illusion of lawn striped @ to see the angle 6:15 and distance between the rear tires. You are right the more times you mow the more it will get "burned in".
Can you tell me how it looked after a day or so? Does it hold the stripes? Interested in getting one of the checkmates for my Troy Bilt Flex. I just haven't wanted to spend the money when I see that the stripes are going away after a day or so. Thank you!

I agree with you LCN, directions indicate as you installed, it’s so you can slide the roller off the pins in one direction. I questioned the pin placement on the mower attachment to my kit as well. But it’s installed correctly as you did.
Maybe last week they looked a little better cause you were bagging, and the first pass this week didn't look as good cause those clippings were slightly covering those stripes, and after mulching those clippings up a little more with the next passes it started to look better. I don't know, just a theory. Also I can't imagine a Better sight to see after giving my Life to Christ than a nice striped Lawn!!! Awesome video man! Take care, God Bless!!

The Lawn Care Nut hey that’s understandable. Keep up the work your doing great A lot on your plate though with 3 channels up and yard mastery and the lawn care nut website. But I wish you the most success just would hate to see you over do it not calling you old 😂 just these days were all more stressful with everything going on just looking out for you my man. 🙏🏼 many blessings.
I'm a big fan of your channel and newsletters. I have learned a lot from watching you over the last three years, and have achieved decent results. However, I live in the city in San Francisco, and our local conditions are difficult and different from many areas, I suspect. My lawn is surrounded by tall buildings. As a result, I deal with pretty dense shade much of the year (which at least makes crabgrass pretty rare). At the same time, our soil temperature is pretty optimal for cool season turf type growth year round. It never really freezes and it never really gets hot enough in the summer for my grass to go dormant. I wonder if you'd be able to do a video at some point providing advice on this type of environment. I think it might be interesting. For instance, maybe I should routinely overseed in the spring or early summer and change up my pre-emergent schedule (the main weed for me is clover). Anyway, I would love to get your thoughts on these unusual situations.
that is very unique and challenging for sure! Buildings are the ultimate shade. I covered this in a podcast last year - not exactly your situation, but similar ruclips.net/video/BG2DTsS2nVc/видео.html
@@TheLawnCareNut Thank you! This is very helpful. I think I watched this when it came out, and had it in my head to try something similar this year, but things got away from me. What I've noticed is that the clover takes over in the winter and I end up putting down new seed to fill in the resulting bare spots when soil temperatures permit germination in late March/early April. The lawn starts getting full sun for several hours per day in May, and it looks phenomenal in July-August. However, in the second week of September, it suddenly thins out, the clover comes in, I can't get new grass to grow, and the cycle repeats itself. I will try to experiment more with the seeding first strategy over the coming year!
I would love to hear someone's take on the Checkmate's ability to stripe bermuda mowed between 1"-2". I see golf courses that get decent stripes in bermuda fairways, but I think they have heavy rollers on their mowers. Has anyone given the Checkmate a try on bermuda?
Does the side discharge make a difference in the stripes? I have a Kubota zero turn and I absolutely hate not bagging because of how fast the Saint Augustine grows. I'm fighting getting a collection system.
Yes I do think the side discharge may be dulling the stripes. I need to see if the bagger will still fit with the roller on. A mulching kit may be an option too.
Allyn I’m planning on purchasing the Big League roller for my “22 recycler this fall. Pete from GCI had a vid on it and caught my attention. Would it be foolish to use it this fall if I just just did my fall over seeding last weekend? I’m hoping to do my first mow on 9/27.
It would be hard not to use it I know! ha ha! I think if you get at least 2-3 good mows in on that new seed, then you could stripe and be fine for sure. Maybe some nice Halloween stripes!
Shot plan from TPE The TPE app ( usually used for photography) can help you plan your direction for stripes. It tells you where the sun rises and sets.
When I go to burn my stripes in I turn my deck off. I feel just using my Lawn Striper does a better job. I believe with the deck on it creates a vacuum possibly standing up the blades. Just roll her down!
With Zoysia, it would drag something instead of having it roll freely. I think you'd get a much more aggressive angle to the grass blades. Something like a weighted tube of PVC. I've seen it before and it really 'burns in' the stripes. It's cheap to make too. Get creative LCN!!

But I wish you the most success just would hate to see you over do it not calling you old 😂 just these days were all more stressful with everything going on just looking out for you my man. 🙏🏼 many blessings.
How can you perform striping without a mower. Is there something out you can push by yourself?
You don't think we'd notice that truck?! Are those 18s on -24?
I will try to experiment more with the seeding first strategy over the coming year!
love the music 🎶
gets the toes tapping!
I would love to hear someone's take on the Checkmate's ability to stripe bermuda mowed between 1"-2". I see golf courses that get decent stripes in bermuda fairways, but I think they have heavy rollers on their mowers. Has anyone given the Checkmate a try on bermuda?
Off topic but can you mix warm and cool grass seeds together
Allyn, do you cut that field at the same height as your lawn at home?
need a maintenance video- your mowers are so shiny!
the camera hides the dirt ha ha!
16:00 wow! great vid!
When I use a rider after mowing the lawn I drop deck to ground with blade off and make stripes.
that's a very good idea! free too.
Can warm weather zoiysa be stripped?
Allyn
I’m planning on purchasing the Big League roller for my “22 recycler this fall.
Thanks Allyn.

On a cool season lawn in Massachusetts: Can I apply a PGR on my lawn and still spot seed? Or are these two not compatible?
I would not use PGR this late in the season. The cold nights will do that for you.
@@TheLawnCareNut thankyou so much for replying
Noice work 👍
Alan, what is the mower blade do you use to cut the zoysia?
it's just whatever came with the JD tractor.
Shot plan from TPE
The TPE app ( usually used for photography) can help you plan your direction for stripes. It tells you where the sun rises and sets.
Would it help to show the strips better if you bagged the clipping? Thx Can you add a stripe bar to an EGO mower?
I'm thinking that it would. I'll try that next if I can still get the bagger on there
you can add a striper to every mower. I use a chunk of black iron pipe on a chain attached to my push mower. You just gotta get creative.
What knife is that ?
When I go to burn my stripes in I turn my deck off. I feel just using my Lawn Striper does a better job. I believe with the deck on it creates a vacuum possibly standing up the blades. Just roll her down!
awesome
Is possible to stripe to much? Can you stripe every time you mow? Or should I alternate? If so how often? TIA
best to alternate every couple mows so you don't train the grass to lay down all the way
Thank you sir
I always thought the checkmate gave the best stripes.
It's a winner.
With Zoysia, it would drag something instead of having it roll freely. I think you'd get a much more aggressive angle to the grass blades. Something like a weighted tube of PVC. I've seen it before and it really 'burns in' the stripes. It's cheap to make too. Get creative LCN!!
