- Chrome spray paint. Does it work on rims ?
Let's try out this chrome spray paint on my old Chev Cruze rims.
The clear coat is completely gone, let's sand them down to bare aluminum and shoot a coat of chrome paint on them.
Cheap way to fix up old alloy wheels
sand clear coat off of rims
Cheapest way to refinish rims Авто/Мото
I watched a half dozen videos on this fix, this was the only one that made sense. Will hold off getting new rims for a year or two
@@keithg7667 Honestly, the paint is pretty soft but has held up not bad. It's presentable and you can always touch them up.
I'm doing an other set now but I clear coated them. Will upload soon !
Seems easy enough that you could do this once a year to keep it fresh and nobody will ever notice they were painted lol
True !! Thanks for your support brother !
Do you think I could paint some rims like you did with the tires on the car?
I would then,
Add a fresh touch up
A few times a year.
Is this a good plan?
No
Hi Stephan, that turned out really good. I'm impressed. I'm going to have to give that Rustoleum a shot. Thanks!
Thank you Brother Bill !
They look much better, a huge improvement, well done ❤.
Thank you I appreciate it
Looks good, but apply 3 coats of clear lacquer, this will enhance the chrome effect and protect the paint.
Great advice. I might just try that
If you put lacquer it's going off
Definitely an improvement! Them centre caps when you get new tyres the tyre guys always tend to break them, I always take'em off & put them on myself! Cheers!!
Yes for sure, I take them off also. Tire guys are usually not very careful lol. Cheers Jason
They look good Stephen. Thanks for sharing - have a good weekend :)
Jerry, you must cringe at some of my hacking. I am in the process of building a bigger garage and I plan to one day paint my project bus with a spray gun.
Have a great weekend my friend !
Cool idea with the playing cards for a quick paint guard for tires.
Thanks !!! I love that trick !!!
@@MrRusspc I've also seen index cards used, saves from ruining a deck of cards
It might not be very reflective, but it still looks damn good.
Thank you ! Alot of people don't like it but I think it's a good cheap improvement.
Very cool brotha, I always wondered how that paint would turn out on rims. Nice work!!
It looks good brotha. Not sure how durable it will be
waanna see it attach to the car too. as finished product
What genius started calling them rims? They’re wheels period! Do you go to the speed shop and buy mag rims? No you buy mag wheels!
Oh snap! We were both painting tires today 😂 i didnt sand my tires first, just brushed them off 😅 great job! Looks Nooice! 😎 STOC
Thanks !!! I need to get caught up on your tractor repair
@@pstreetgarage7304You betcha! My favorite color as a kid was a can of Rust-Oleum silver and a paint brush back before spray paint 😂..i love chrome for sure! .I hope you will, sorry about the volume...I will get better at filmmaking and working at the same time... 😂
Maybe a set of olde fashoned front curb feelers would help him😊. Another fine job. Such a good dad.
Haha maybe, but I think those would get ripped off. Thanks Michael
Great video. Thanks for posting this. Have a nice day.
Thank you my friend I appreciate that !
Hey brother looks good. Praying you have a blessed day today 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you my friend
Yeah these look great. Gonna try this with my winter rims when I change over to summers. Nice card trick! Must try this. I thought maybe you were going to color in the Chev emblems on the caps. Probably overkill.😊
Overkill for a Chev Cruze. Thanks for watching
I like how you used a deck of cards also!
Love that trick. Way better than taping !
I think it is a really nice finish on those alloys. It's a shame the paint isn't very durable. I'd love to see the condition after 3 months of daily driving.
It's not horrible actually. It's definitely a 10 footer but not a big investment. Thanks for viewing !
Nice work Stephan, I think they turned out looking great. I've always been skeptical of the "chrome" paint but that looks worth a try 🙂👍
It's not a bad finish. Probably not very durable. Thank you Zane !
paint a thin base coat of black first... before painting chrome on it...it helps shine the finish and not dull it
@@bones007able I have heard this before !! Thanks. I will try that next time
Thayer gonna look good in a blinding rain storm in the middle of the night. Time spent on them they look Good 👍.
Definitely a big Improvement,Nice Job
Thanks Anthony
They look great.
Thank you 👌👌👍👍
I saw a vid recently were they painted chrome then cleared then a light spray of chrome again and it looked more like chrome
I thought about clear coat but these are for my son Chev Cruze. A cheap car. It's an improvement over what he had
I used this and noticed they lose their shine quite fast. I tried a Protective Coating Spray Finish, it held the shine longer but still seemed to dull out. But, like you said, not bad for an old banger 🤟🇨🇦
Thanks for the feedback. I thought about clear coating. I did it in the past and the second coat of clear wrinkled everything ?!
@@pstreetgarage7304 lol I did the same thing, messed up my second coat. I only applied one coat last time and it went well 🤟🇨🇦
@@whitetrashandhellbound6905 Exactly ! When I re did them. I applied 1 thick coat. Cheers
Hey you found a good indoor project to keep you busy. I think it looks great. Kinda hard to see the difference on video but in person I’m sure it was a huge difference. For sure better than that peeling clear coat. I thought you were gonna go over it with a clear coat? I bet that would have made them pop even more. Even so, Great job!
I wanted to do the inlay black with clear over the aluminum but my son will trash those in the first 2 weeks. He's got a thing for hitting curbs amongst other things lol
I used paint stripper to get the clear coat off some wheels. Worked alright. Still had to sand a bunch
@@WhiskeyDents Thanks man !!!
Looks pretty good !!!!
Thank you ! I think so. For 10 dollars anyway.
You can get overlay decals for the Chevy emblems on the wheel centers. BTW, making the centers black doesn't look too good. It looks cheap.
Well I don't disagree. It is a cheap car and I was just having fun with it.
Can we get an updated video to see how they’ve held up?
@@timelordnoah5179 Sure !!! It's been 4 months
I bought a can of Rustyoleum bright coat, read the label when I arrived home and it says for indoor use. Guess that is why it does not hold up well.
The stuff I used. Is not super hard but has held up not bad on a set of rims
I used that paint on a rusty patch on my f150s fender & it looked really good
Now I'm debating whether I want to do the rims on my harley with that or go with a color.
Hello thanks for watching. It looks pretty good but I have to say it is soft. As in it scuffs easy but can easily be touched up 👍
@@pstreetgarage7304 Thanks for the feedback. I don't think I will use it on the rims.
heyyy good cheap upgrade...well done sir
Thank you my friend !!!
@@pstreetgarage7304 welcome
Looks good
Thank you !!!! I appreciate it
Did that paint on my rims, I didn't do a clear coat and should have.
I got it so smooth and did not think it needed a ckear coat.
Was I wrong.
This paint for some reason does not stand up well against strong chemicals like some of their other paints do.
I would recommend that you do a good 2 to 3 layer clear coat over this aint if you do not want it to spoil for the slightest reason.
Without a clear coat it scuffs to a dark matt color and come chemicals like benzene just eats the crap out of it even though their matt black could withstand benzene.
But if you want a smooth silver finish this is the paint and going to redo mine with clear coat soon.
Great advice. I did an other set and cleared them. I used aluminum paint with clear on top.
Looks good, but this paint is super delicate. A leaf will scratch it!
Yes. You are correct ! I have noticed that. Thank you for watching !
Good job 👍❤
Thank you !
Paint stripper, aluminum brightener ( marine pontoon cleaner) then clear coat.
Yes! I love alumibright. We have it at my work
I have old SUV, Can you please guide how can I Chrome paint wheels without removing them from car at home please.
All 4 disck breaks.
A bit tougher but I have done this before.
Insert a garbage bag inside the wheel to cover the caliper and rotor.
Mask off the rubber with tape and plastic bags. Works fine
Wow that’s a lot of views! Great video
Yes! That's my best vid to date lol
@@pstreetgarage7304 outstanding I think my best is 5500 lol
Oh I’m sure son will be happy.
Yes. Until he beats them up 😆
Everything but the main important part what kind of paint did you use?
Rust Oleum. 👍
How about telling the tire shop to put the weights on the inside of the wheel?
Yes. I dropped the ball on that one. All my other cars have weights on the inside.
Thanks for checking it out !
Ive used this paint. For some reason it dulls short of immediately.
Yes. It is not very durable
Try Eastwoods liquid chorme over a FULL WEEK CURED 2k gloss black single stage. Apply the chrome with a small gun AS LIGHT as possible. You can thank me later.
Yes. Would be much better ! Thanks
Looks good I need to do Katie's
Hey Ed ! Thanks
What if they are black, should it work again with that effect in the end?
I think yes !
I wonder how well will it hold on
With my son's driving......Probably not long 😆😆😆
Not bad at all. Definitely an improvement. Does your son like them?
He does. Thank you my friend !
@@pstreetgarage7304 You are welcome!
Gloss black would have really brought the chrome finish out
@@boxboy50 I have heard this, thank you.
What grit sandpaper did you use??
120 I think. Might have started with 80. The old clear coat just fell off.
Dulls doesn't it when you touch it 😂
Yes. Not perfect. Just enough for a spruce up
Adhesion promoter will help the paint stay on the rims
Primer ?? . They are actually holding up better than I though
It's a clear primer It's at auto parts stores ,it says adhesion promoter on the can .
@@AnnoyedCoastalBeach-nl4tm Thanks ! I will check that out.
👍👍👍
Olá boa noite vc jogou verniz???🇧🇷🇧🇷👍
Thank you
Never call it chrome. It is matte silver. Why do they put chrome mirror blank caps on that crap? To make you buy the product? You need to file a complaint with the Federal trade commission. They have to put the cap that is exactly like the result of painted surface. Matte.
Yes. It's never like the cap. I knew that going in.
You talk 🦜 touch señor. 😮😮
I talk like a bird ?
@@pstreetgarage7304 yeesss more than bird 🐦🐦🐦🐦 you talk to much and don't understand what you says.
Show the car! With them
Good point ! I missed that lol
Given the rims look better but far far from being chrome so l don't know why they insist on putting a chrome cap on top of the spray can other than to sell more product which to me is dishonest . So you can just as well go with a bright glossy silver and be better off. DONT BE GUILLABLE PEOPLE, CHROME IN A CAN IS NOT A THING !
or was that four decks of cards ha ha
2 actually. Boom baby !!!
Center cups 🙈
I do the same thing I’ll paint a vehicle and it looks beautiful and I still got like a pint of clear left and I’ll put some more clear on and then all of a sudden boom I get a massive run
@@Irsauditor4320 haha. Always. I just did an other set and used clear coat
that should last about 3 months.......not much prep work put into that job
Not the prep. It's the paint. Very soft
He kinda rushed through it. If he had done 3-4 coats, they would have turned out much better.
They will last all of 30 seconds in reality as that chrome paint will scuff and wipe off with your finger or a wash mitt as it's the least durable paint known to man. You'll get a week out of it before it goes dull grey.
@@PM_Anthony_Albanese It's been 4 months. They aren't as bad as you would think. Yes it is extremely soft and yes you could literally scrub them down to bare metal 😂
U just had to paint something black didn’t U? 👎🏿
I like the black center cap...... Is that bad ?
@@pstreetgarage7304 No not really. I could just tell how much U wanted to paint the entire wheel black, U mentioned in a couple times before U started working on the wheel, but your son didn’t want the entire wheel black. I actually think that it was cool that U did this for your son. I’m a father to a son as well, so I get it.
@@maclac48 Thanks man !
@@pstreetgarage7304 No problem.
That paint is terrible, won’t last a month.
It's soft but actually not as bad as you would think
crap chrome
Kind of
He doesn't know how to paint. Psst psst psst psst isn't painting. Like dab dab dab dab with a brush.
Chrome spray paint is nothing short of a bad joke, don't waste your time
