I can’t seem to source anywhere near the amounts of things many raw feeders can source. So, instead of focusing on balanced, I focus on nutritious. Just like when feeding my family, I want to put a nutritious meal in her bowl. I do this by rotating Dr. Harvey’s base mixes Paradigm and Raw Vibrance, and I switch the ground protein after every pound is fed, and I rotate between sardines, smelt, olive oil, and coconut oil. I only have chicken liver, but I will soon pick up some beef liver as well, and I just got some gizzards. I focus on what his the markdown section at my supermarket, and what frozen meats friends and family are throwing away. I also include a frozen raw pre-made food in the rotation.
If you feel uncomfortable feeding raw, it's ok to cook the meat. I'm just starting my dog on raw/fresh and she'll eat the muscle meat raw, but she refuses to eat the liver raw 🤣
It's better for her to have fresh, cooked liver than the pellet dog food
My dog loves raw meaty bones and feet. But he seemed to have gotten burnt out on all raw stuff. He goes hard on it cooked though. Maybe I'm serving the raw food too cold? Also are there supplements I need to add to his food or are these ratios fine where they are?
@@freedommarine1442have your dogs warmed up to it? Mine were picky and didn’t like it cold like yours at first, 2 years later they’ll eat everything completely frozen. Makes clean up fast
Also, like with babies, fed is best. It's better for you to eat McDonald's than to starve yourself, same thing. The main idea is to get them healthier foods more frequently, again, like we should be doing for ourselves
My Giant Schnauzer is thriving on his raw diet and we are not strict whatsoever with ratio or second organs. We actually do a lot of organ once or twice a week instead

That's definitely nice to know about the second secreting organ. I'm feeding my cat half canned and half raw for two months ish. (Mostly because I horded a bunch of different kinds of canned foods before I decided to make the change and just incase my formulas aren't a 100% perfect). I as of right now I can really only get beef kidney regularly. So I felt bad that I couldn't get a variety, but it's nice to know that as long as all the nutrition is ment the second secreting isn't mandatory. I did manage to get a couple of beef eyeballs, a local farm lets me go through the organ pile when they slaughter. But it's just in a giant tub, so it's hard to find what you want. It's great for raw beef tripe though
It sounds like you're doing what you can to get a variety, so that's great! Kidney is just fine if it's the only one you can find.
I've learned that some key nutrients from animal proteins vary wildly according to season, regionality, and the animal's diet - so while it's important to try to feed balanced, the reality is that all those values are pretty general, especially with regard to things like vitamins D and E.
Yep they are! We really won't ever know the exact numbers of the foods we feed unless we do the nutritional analysis on that exact cut ourselves.
Great video as always! How much taurine does beef tongue have compared to beef heart please? I can’t seem to find this info on the internet. Thanks 🙏
A LOT more! Per 100 g, beef tongue has about 175.2 mg, and beef heart has about 65.2 mg.

My wolfdog does better on a higher bone percentage. I’ve noticed she doesn’t feel full and will even lose a little weight unless I boost her bone intake a little. I was thinking about the consumable bone in a small animal like a rodent or bird versus a large animal like a deer or elk. I think they would naturally consume a higher bone percentage when eating the entire body of a small animal vs cleaning the carcass of a larger animal where many of the large bones are left behind.
That is an awesome observation and theory. I have no doubt wolfdogs have slightly different nutrient requirements.
Wish I saw this video sooner. Last year when I start feeding raw I followed the 801010 rules and my dog would often have diarrhea. I give him slightly less secreting organs and more bones for more solid stool. I also don’t follow the ratio to the tee.

I get free salmon carcasses from the sushi place I work at (the heads, skin, spines, and tails, with meat attached). It is sushi grade salmon (flash frozen on the boat under -4 degrees to eliminate parasites, and kept that way for some time).
The salmons are huge, around 3 foot long, and the heads are the size of my 80 lb dogs head.
So I was wondering if it would be okay to feed him the spines/heads/tails/skin without grinding them. I can grind them, but would rather not, and I'm just wondering if it would be safe to feed him portions of the spine whole, and if I should count this as raw meaty bone?
I'm involved in every step the fish goes through from processing to sales (I am the ServSafe manager on staff) so I know the fish itself is the best, freshest I can get my hands on, I just don't know how to physically feed it to my dog or count it towards his meals.
Don't quote me on this, but I don't think she calculate fish in with her meal prep since the meat and bone are negligible. She uses a general ratio of 1oz of fish for every 20lb of dog. Salmon skin is high in omega. I would dehydrate it and preserve it as a treat. Dehydrated salmon skin is expensive online. I would scrape off the meat and save it to feed raw and the carcass I would turn into fermented fish stock which is high in probiotics.
I would just feed it the way it is and count it as meaty bones if there is meat attached. I like to feed sprats as a whole and salmon heads to my dogs, if you have got the option you should use it! I usually count 2 kg sprats as 1 kg meaty bones but the carcas of a salmon should be about the same amount of calcium than a carcass of a bird has to over. I wouldn't bother about it to much. The omega3 oils are great, I would not dry it or anything else, to prevent them because they are rancid very soon otherwise.

What percent of the 80% should green tripe be for my dog?
No more than 10%
I do 15% and did 20% in the past. It depends on the quality and your dog and the rest of the ratio

What I have done after feeding raw for many years is that I use more muscular organs than I used to like heart, lung, tripe and tongue. I now feed liver only three times per week and split between poultry and ruminant animals. I also feed a much wider variety of secreting organs such as liver, kidney, brain, eyeballs, sweetbreads, testes, pancreas, spleen and whatever else I can get my hands on. I make sure to feed a wide variety of secreting organs over the course of a week and not too much of any one of them.

I have been feeding Raw to my dogs for 15 years and my cats for five years. hi don't get too hung up on the ratios. I try to emphasize variety. All different kinds of proteins, as many organs as I can get although that is hard sometimes, raw meaty bones etc. And I add a spoonful of vegetables now and then. and a couple eggs per week with the shell. I think the absolute most important thing is variety. Like you said, the ratios give you a baseline but there is a lot of wiggle room from there if you get the variety that they need.
My bulldog recently got put on Atopica, and advised me to stop feeding raw. Do you have info on the why this med conflicts with raw?
Hello, I was actually hoping to switch to a raw diet, in hopes to reduce my dogs allergies? Did you not see much improvement? I would be very cautious with that drug. Do some research on it, it is an immuno suppressant (actually a toxin). Your vet might have said to eliminate the raw diet due to that? Maybe doing lightly cooked and switching proteins could help? I’ve been down a long allergic battle with my girl as well. I understand the struggle.
@@xperiencesaecm Thanks for the reply. It must be the immuno suppressant aspect. I will do more research using that keyword with "raw"and see what else I can find. We've been on apoquel for years, and with continued skin injections, yeast issues, and ear infections, we are switching to the Atopica. It's not my ideal option, but natural remedies aren't doing anything for him. They are environmental allergies, and aside from just getting rid of the lawn, I'm not sure what else we can do. It's an allergy to weeds and grasses mainly. Raw diet, unfortunately, didn't do anything different for me for his allergy symptoms. I like feeding him (and my other dogs) the raw, but I wasn't sure with the immuno suppressant aspect and the raw, if that was really something to be concerned about, or if it was just someone that was opposed to raw diets in general telling me to move him to non raw.
@Reggie I believe most conventional vets are trained that raw diets are bad and recommend stopping raw food for all dogs. Maybe consult with a holistic vet or, if you don't have a holistic vet available, a canine nutritionist to tweak your dogs raw diet therapeutically.
my dog refuses raw - I have tried chicken and beef (different parts and different times) and no go - she just "nudges" it around the kitchen floor - I still will offer from time to time but she lets me know it is not first choice

What's the frequency of eating whole prey in the wild for our dogs? I feel like this thought experiment is not very well-developed and doesn't consider the domestication aspects of pets that may have diminished their ability to survive in the wild
There are no dogs in the wild technically, since they are a man-made domesticated species. Generally this style of diet is talking about what wolves would eat as the closest comparison to dogs.

Growing up y mum had a condition and the doc decided that what my mum needed was vitamin A . As it was not available in any other form she had to eat raw liver sandwiches, never did her no harm and probably a lot of good.

the most heartbreaking thing happened at work today. i'm an employee at a pet supply store, and today i was working the register. a woman came up to buy some dog food, and we struck up some conversation. she eventually said something along the lines of "apparently grain free isn't the way to go, and no one decided to tell me" (she said in a joking manner). i replied with, "your vet tell you that?" and she said yes. she followed up by saying that her dogs heart is really oversized and weak now. so now i'm thinking "wow, her vet told her that grain free diets caused her dog to get dcm". so she was recommended a grain inclusive diet, any grain inclusive diet. the brand of food she was buying? pedigree. i didn't have the heart to tell her that not only is her vet full of shit, but her dog is about to be.

freezing degrades more than just taurine but it's better than cooking...fresh is best! My furry pal loves eating live chicks and usually starts with the head 🐣
Can a whole egg with an uncooked yolk (or barely cooked yolk) stand in for a second organ and/or some of the variety? Pastured chicken eggs are a good source of retinol (active vitamin A the form that carnivores need) in addition to B-carotene, vitamin D, Vitamin E and K I think. I can't get a lot of organ variety so rely on eggs.
does the amount of whole prey vary with the size of the pet as well? for example a ferret eats 1 quail as 1 meal, but for a cat, they should eat 2 quails for 1 meal? does it work like that?

Can I feed raw diet for my live stock guardian dogs? It's should not see my chickens and lambs as its prey....it is suppose to protect them.
I know some homestead channels on RUclips feed their dogs raw.
Livestock guarding breeds have been doing their jobs since LONG before commercial pet food was a thing. They weren’t vegetarians. They can distinguish between doing their job and eating their food no matter what you feed them.

Why would you feed Heffron have kibble? I know sometimes it is a budget issue. if I was to do that I would feed the most high-quality kibble I could find, although the price is going to end up being about the same as Raw. Then I would make sure that the raw part of the meal had as much variety is absolutely possible.

You can do that, did so too. Just take care not to give both in one go but some hours in between. It isn't different to pure raw, do the same and make sure the total amount of both diets end up to what is needed.
Sometimes it is necessary to mix both diets, I was very limited in storage room at that time and also short on money but my dog can't eat to much dry food so I used to give 60% raw and 40% kibbles for one dog and the other way round for the second dog. Dry food in the morning for speed and raw food in the evenings, it worked well for us.
can my dog eat a chicken leg quarter every day in its balanced diet? is that too much bone every single day?,
you'd have to give the weight and breed of the dog for anyone to answer this accurately

This is exactly how I’m feeding my cat. I haven’t been able to find a second organ so I supplement with other parts and my cat is healthy, lively and incredibly groomed! Great video!

Im pretty sure the answer is no
I became more relaxed over the years. I use 50/20/15/15 with 20% soft, meaty bones (which is about 10% pure bone) and 15% organs (mostly Liver but also kidney, spleen, heart) and 15% ruman. I order 20 kg of this ratio and if it's all eaten the dogs musst be fine. I also started to feed more vegetables, about 40% in total including rice or potato, brewers yeast, oil, sometimes even lenses or raw blood. My dogs refuse to eat whole anymals, not even a mice they hunted themself, no little chicken not even shredded but they like sprats. I used to feed less bones and more rumen in the past but switched because I now feed more tiny bones which have less calcium and rumen is not very helpfull anyway, if it's by domesticated animals that are mostly fed by grains instead of grass. Also I used to feed only 10-20% pure vegetables in the past but it is a bit of a confliced, since I don't want other animals to suffer in order to feed mine extremly healthy. I'm sure some carbohydrates won't do any damage to them.
fact dogs wont live longer than feeding them raw food vs kibble. This woman is trying to say she knows more than vets.
They may not live longer, but they will definitely live healthier and happier lives.
It’s true in my experience. My raw fed rescue dogs live at least twice as long as their breeds normally do. Well into their mid to late teens.
