    Hi Exeter Rider - Thanks for commenting on my video and thanks for linking me to yours here. I hadn't seen it yet.
    I own a BWM R1200RT also and I would choose my C Evo over that every time. If I could do long distance touring with it, i would.
    Really love the fact that this is a genuine first impression on the bike. All the people commenting on the bike was how i also experienced it the first 2 years of ownership...it was great. Thanks for putting together a 'mustard' review! :)

      Steve Bolton the scooter (and my i3) tends to be initially conservative with its range prediction. I would see between 76 and 84 miles of range. If I stay away from interstates, I can easily bring range up to >100 miles (110+ miles I imagine). Usually I tend to have a good cushion on my way home that I start to get playful with the throttle. It’ll do fine at 70-85 mph but expect your battery range to deplete faster. If you just ride from 35-60 mph, you can easily pass others and the short bursts of speed don’t affect the range too much. Very nimble fun comfortable.

      @@exeterrider the US basically just gets what is called the long-range version in Europe, if I'm not mistaken. My bike is model year 2018 even though it is new. European market seems to get latest versions then it trickles into the US later. I've seen a black C Evolution in Euro pics but we only get the silver/green version.

    Bought 2014 BMW C Evolution in May 2019 for £5300, like new. Costs £1400 to replace batteries and there is 3 of them. Last service costing £50 batteries had 93% capacity. Your first impressions were spot on right down to the halogen headlights (and number plate light)! Great bike on holiday and missing it.

      Did you mean replacing all batteries is 3 x £1400 (= €4500) or just £1400?
      Do you still own the Evolution? And if you do, how are the batteries holding?
      In my country they still are not very affordable. A 2014 demo-model sets you back almost €9k. So this scooter has been ridden by many people, even as a service bike. Not very attractive to me.

    As far as I know this machine is not available in Australia (where I live). If I'm buying a maxi scooter, given the cost and the on road costs, I intend it to be a touring scooter. I'm sure it would be great for the daily commute and would do the job on the highway/motorway/freeway but the absence of a decent screen is a serious negative. As a Burgman owner you would know the electrically adjustable screen makes a great deal of difference; at slow speed giving good air flow and at high speeds for example 110km/h (the national speed limit in Australia) the screen raised to its highest position keeps the wing off the cheat and reduces pressure on the arms. As this is a production version (not a prototype) I would expect BMW to have considered this.

      Thanks for the quick response! Enjoying your videos here in Honolulu after coming across your review on the Honda NC 750X DCT. New rider in my late 50s shopping for my first bike. Since my riding would be mostly a short commute to work in congested urban traffic, I'm considering skipping the whole shifting thing and going automatic. One less thing to worry about while still riding a motorcycle. I first dismissed the idea of a scooter until I saw the Burgman 650 up close at the local Suzuki dealership. The 400 would probably make more sense for me since I would rarely be on the freeway and even then our freeways are a pretty short experience on an island. I haven't checked out the Forza 300 yet. The local dealer that sells Hondas is also the Island's only Harley-Davidson dealer and it's Harleys that they're pushing as soon as you walk into the showroom.

      @@PCDoctorUSA I live in Australia and I own a Burgman 650. As far as I can determine they are no longer made - at least they are not available in Australia any more. I've owned a variety of bikes and a few scooter including the Burgman and a Piaggio MP3 400. I consider the Burgman to be the benchmark of maxi scooter. It is quick, agile and responsive around town but also good on the open road. Here's a quick review I did of the Burgman ruclips.net/video/LzDg9MOaLHQ/видео.html

    I rode one from BMW at the Slyfield Industrial Estate, Guildford to The Swan at Streatly-On-Thames. I did get slightly lost on the way trying to avoid the M4. The Google Maps distance is 39.1 miles, so with 100 mile range there and back it should have been OK. The demo bike had been fitted with a larger screen which didn't help, but the original 100 mile range dropped down to 85 miles within 6 miles of the industrial estate riding gently at 30-40. I briefly got onto the M4, luckily there was a 50mph Speed Restriction. On ECO the whole way I arrived at the pub with 45% battery left. Luckily the Swan staff were kind enough to let me charge the bike over 90 minutes lunch using the 3-pin plug on the bike. I did come off at the M4 services near Reading but there wasn't a charger that would fit the bike. I think the bike was back up around 55% before I left the pub to return and I had range anxiety the whole trip there and back. About 11 miles from Guildford with 15% battery left I had a go with Dynamic mode which was really exciting. I absolutely loved the bikes performance, handling, comfort and lack of gears but I couldn't own one because you can't go far enough. I think I did about 90 miles in total and had around 5% left. I expect there is a safety margin like a petrol reserve though.
    I also had difficulty finding out what the battery guarantee is. Eventually I was told the battery is guaranteed to retain 80% of its performance after 5 years, or BMW will replace it. I couldn't find out how you can replace the battery after a few more years? Do you throw away the 14K bike? I don't know. The battery pack is securely placed inside a strong frame for safety but probably expensive to change.
    I then tried out the BMW 650 GT scooter - great facilities, electric screen, heated seats and grips, huge under seat space - which was great but the fuel consumption on them is poor to my mind (45-50mpg). You also need the CVT belt replaced expensively every 11K miles.
    I bought a 2017 Honda NC750X DCT instead which does 200 miles before reserve, the way I ride it and has another 40-50 miles on reserve, and it is automatic. My overall fuel average fuel consumption on the NC750 is 84mpg over 10K miles and it cost just over half the price (£7500) of the C Evo. Without riding the Evo I would not have realised I like automatic bikes. I have a low traffic countryside 35 mile commute to work and I can get over 90mpg on the return journey if I ride gently.
    If you buy a zero it is much easier to swap batteries into the frame - although I don't know the cost.
    Also remember battery performance will be worse in winter. When electric bikes have a decent range I would definitely like to ride one, but the costs are too high and you can't tour on them at the moment.

    • @exeterrider
      @exeterrider  5 лет назад +2

      Great Post and info Steve thankyou.
      Yes I agree with all the above. However I think for general commuting within reason without getting lost it would be perfect. Yes I agree also that really they need to stand the test of time. The battery's do drop in general to 75 to 85 percent from my research in 5 years and I have no idea what the replacement cost is.
      I wanted to try the zero but my dealer in Torquay wasn't intrested which is there loss but frustrating and for me.
      I've seen the new concept for the BMW electric bike and if its anything like I've seen then it's going to blow Zero away!
      The nc750 is in my top 3 favourite bikes. You chose well Steve

      If the batteries on the i3 are any indication of how they will perform 5-7 years from now, I am not expecting any degradation in capacity or performance. The key is thermal management. My 2014 i3 drives just as far and with no performance decrease as when it was new. Now the C Evo has a different cooling setup but I did see a small radiator and fan in the front wheelwell and it has air intakes under the bike for cooling (had to carefully study photos of the C Evo in a lean to see the intake at the bottom). The range "guess-o-meter" (the official term used by EV owners) is conservative but does change with driving conditions and how your right wrist is behaving.

    Don't think there'll be a huge market for electric maxi scooters. Surely a CBT friendly commuter bike with about 100 mile range and 3k price tag is the route to go?

    • @exeterrider
      @exeterrider  5 лет назад +1

      I'm sure we all agree to that but you imagine the millions needed to bring something like this to market. For 3k you are at the moment looking at a Soco type electric bike but they arnt up to much. In time it will come down. 13k is unfortunate but reasonable considering what went into it.
