    My favourite modulation pedal. It's the only pedal that behaves and sounds like a living organism. It breathes. I literally bought it to build my whole sound around it. This was a great demo by the way. ❤️

      Any recomendations for more pedals like this? I don’t think about this exact vibe (lo-fi, tape warble…) but more in line of the “living organism” aestetics?

      @@empireoftonestudio : That’s a difficult one. This is the only pedal I have that gives me this feeling. A completely different pedal, but as far as I can tell with a similar feeling (as if it has a mind of its own) is the ‘Microcosm’ by Hologram Electronics.
      They’re hard to find and when you do, know that they’re not cheap. I would love to have one myself, but the last time I checked it was close to 800 dollars or euros. ☹️

    This morning I stumbled across this pedal and I've been over each and every video online today. And tonight I'm thinking my playing will never amount to anything without those sounds, I could spend insane money on lotsa gear but still I'd be wanting this... It has emotion and that's what I find most important in music, and it floats me away

    Probably fhe best demo of this pedal I've seen, Mark. You had a game plan and managed to resist the urge to twiddle knobs randomly. Perhaps spending a few days becoming familiar with a pedal before producing a video is a strategy that more reviewers should adopt.

    • @markjohnstonofficial
      @markjohnstonofficial  4 года назад +5

      Thanks so much. I think a big part of that was having seen a lot of demos for this pedal already, for a couple reasons. 1. Was I knew what was well worn pathways on this one and 2 was that when I got this I found myself going “why is nobody talking about THIS feature??”

    I think understanding 30% of what it does is what it does so amazingly. I currently have this right before Maude and it is an addictive pairing. I tend to have the mix and the depth cranked most of the time. Most aptly named pedal ever: Shallow but very deep. The pitch shifts sound almost like notes getting knee knocked by one of those rubberized reflex mallets🤣 It also seems to impart a timbre/tone sheen akin to a sonic cloak or a veil, I guess depending somewhat on how the gate is set/interacting. These pedals define character.

    Really great review. Bought this after your demo. Helped me understand the parameters of the knob interactions which helped me find the sweet spot (and full wet - thanks for that as I typically run a blend on most pedals). Now that I found the sweet spot I can't turn it off. Adds something blissfully organic to everything.

    Def the guy to explain this pedal; it's subtle yet complex.
    I've long attempted particular kinds of grittiness that seem better achieved through effects other than fuzz and drive.Avoid more conventional " Rock" sounds on most of my stuff, preferring more Lo Fi/ Garage , -long depended on Germanium circuits which are very tempermental, not to mention expensive and hard to locate.The Zvex LO FI Junky first turned me on to the potential of combining other effects, stacking and layering, to achieve guitar sounds that " blossom", maintain the initial attack, and still cut through the mix.
    Have you tried the Unpleasant Surprise? Had one for months, and still trying to figure out it's application, abilities and context.They call it " experimental" , and it is that. Peace.

    I’ve found it so hard to get “musical” for a lack of a better word with these types of devices...or modulation specifically ....but this seems to have cracked this code. I think I hear what you are capturing. I have a recreation of oil can delay that I have such an issue dialing in. Seems like the useable play has been lengthened or expanded in the pot parameters so you can immediately dial in as a usable. Hopefully I’m getting the drift of this.

    One point I'd like to make is that although hearing the nuance of this pedal in headphones is cool, there's no replacing the feeling you get when you have this playing through several speakers and some decent wattage! I know that there is some inherent noise that comes from the BBD chip when you crank the modulation parameters the gate is there to tame those (it’s in the manual). • @markjohnstonofficial
      @markjohnstonofficial  4 года назад +3

      It’s tough to say where mine was set because trim pots are hard to describe accurately. W no modulation, LPG at minimum, and mix at max; I set the gate so that my guitar is audible but can’t move the gate open in a discernible way. Then I turn up to LPG at noon and test my finger style attack dynamics to see if it feels good there. 3 passes of those two settings pretty much solved it for me.

    • @danawiesbrock2069
      @danawiesbrock2069 4 года назад +3

      Since it responds to the level of the signal, the response of the LPG can vary widely depending on the output of your pickups. If you have low output pickups you may consider adding a bit more volume from another pedal before it, or if you have high output pickups, play around with the volume on your guitar. Hope this helped!

    Thank you for this very excellent demo.
    I'm a keyboardist and new to pedals--did you plug this into your amp's input, or an fx loop? I'm wondering if I'm doing it wrong by plugging my SW in between my Rhodes and my vibrolux's input channel. It sucks out a ton of highs, and has a fairly extreme amount of added noise.

    • @mellowords
      @mellowords 3 года назад

      Actually, I just plugged into the pre-amp gain on the vibrolux, and the SW's signal is almost silent. I know I've routed everything right because bypassing the pedal results in a clean, clear tone. I opened up the SW and found no battery to replace. Any help for this pedal noon?

    Do you have any experience with their Barbershop pedal? I love it, but wonder if I could replace it with the Shallow Water to get the grit AND modulation. Great review of this pedal, btw. Thanks for showing some aspects other reviews haven’t.

    Love your channel. Is the overdrive/grit all the Shallow Water and not coming at all from the Benson? I love the sound but would be going from my Wampler compressor to the Shallow Water (assuming that's good order) to my Meris Polymoon and then reverb. I don't have a Benson Preamp so I'm curious. Thanks!

      I didn’t find that there was anything to solve. I set the filter to taste on the internal trim pot and then dialed to it whatever guitar I was using on the front. Never heard or dealt with any crazy noise.

      @@markjohnstonofficial first of all, thanks for the quick reply. I found that even in this video ruclips.net/video/dBJ26MY-Blk/видео.html at 2:10 min when LPG is at maximum, or at least above half, it creates a noise like vibrating iron. In any case, I tried to write directly to Fairfield Circuitry to understand how to set it up. also because it is not clear how to move the boost and pad jumpers, in my case a black plastic element covers the 2 pins out of 3 on the left. Thanks.

      @@markjohnstonofficial Thanks for taking the time to answer. Because I focused on the music I didn't pay attention that there were different video shooting related to the different individual loops. I thought that you were overlaping loops in realtime and that you a had a setting that allowed you to play a loop, change track and record a second loop while the first is still playing, then change track and record a third loop etc etc...and end up with a multitrack session at the end of which you would just have to change the panning of each loop. Again thanks for your time and the poetry which emanates from your music and videos.
