  • Guitar demo of the captivating and nostalgia-filled Shallow Water K-Field Modulator by Fairfield Circuitry.
    Learn more about the pedal here: fairfieldcircu...
    So what is the Fairfield Shallow Water? In techy terms it’s a k-field modulator, a unique modulation device, which takes your classic analog chorus/flanger/vibrato affair and fuses it with randomised pitch fluctuations and a low-pass filter gate. In Stefan terminology it’s a portal to the past that sees your tone sway, dance and quiver as if played through a dusty old tape recorder.
    If you need clean, pristine and predictable modulation, then this pedal isn’t for you. But if you’re like me and prefer pedals that practically take on a life of their own and impart your melodies with bucket loads of nostalgia, then you absolutely need to dip your tone in the Shallow Water right now.

    The depth it adds and how it creates cohesion between even slightly jarring sounds is magic.

    Bought this and chroma console at the same time. When practicing alone, the chroma console nailed the lofi sound better, but as soon as I played live acoustic or electric with band, the shallow water always felt better, and cut through the mix. Even as a simple drive on acoustic. Phenomenal pedal, the way the knobs interact is beautiful genius.
    Incredible demo!

      Honored, man! It was Knobs that sold me on the Shallow Water, and I haven’t regretted it for one second. Totally lives up to the hype and it’s by far my favorite modulation pedal. This thing is just alive ❤️🌊🐳❤️ Thanks for watching and commenting. Means the world to me 🙏

      Ditto this. Anything you send through this pedal.....amazing. The shallow water reinvigorated every piece of gear I own. From guitars to sequencers to mics to kazoos. I basically sleep with this pedal next to me. What Stefan calls a learning curve I would call a journey to enlightenment. I can’t turn this pedal off. Ever.

      @Bill Frank ; The day I saw this demo and heard how Stefan used it was the day I knew I had to have it. I'm not a wealthy guy and I had to prioritize some other pieces of gear first, so I had to save everything I could and wait for 1,5 years before I got it. I wanted it so badly! And it didn't disappoint me. Man, do I love this sound.
      I was working on a new set of songs for a new band I was forming and this is the sound I was looking for. I still watch this demo every now and then (just did it again), because Stefan's song in the end inspired me and it keeps inspiring me!
      If I ever get the question what inspired me to write the music I write and to sound the way I sound, I would have to answer that I found my sound in the combination of Maarten van Roozendaal (don't bother, it's Dutch - his lyrics are wonderful) and Stefan from The Pedal Zone. And I wouldn't be lying! 😁

    Best pedal I heard since ages. And you made me drawn into it. A lot of times, when crazy pedals like this get on the market, the guys that need to review these things don't have a clue what to do with it, but you made it work in a way that was amazingly beautiful and actually quiet emotional.
    I've been excited, hearing new pedals, but I never felt like this. This is like a new world opening up for me. I'm 51 years old now, I thought I've been in every world. The way you demoed the pedal couldn't be better. Thanks for that! I'm gonna subscribe. You leave me no choice (and this is the first demo I've seen you doing). Keep up the good work!

  • @mariodriessen9740
    @mariodriessen9740 4 года назад +7

    This demo was the first demo I saw you doing, Stefan. I fell in love with the pedal instantly and I subscribed to your channel immediately. I knew right away that this pedal would change my way of thinking about music. I've written so many pieces of music in my live. Songs flooded like a wild river of fantasies and I thought it would never stop. But it did. I got into a writers block for way too many years actually. I never really understood what happened.
    However, this video of you playing this pedal so beautifully, was atleast 50% of what I needed to get myself going again. The other 50% came out of playing some old songs I wrote, but without a band and with a guitar that I down tuned a minor third. For practical reasons. I just wanted to sing my songs again and my voice dropped. It sounded great and for some reason I just made the connection of playing my down tuned songs through this pedal and some spacy reverb.
    And now that old wild river of fantasies is flooding like in my best days. And the Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water will be the foundation of my new sound.
    I received mine yesterday. It took a long time, but it's mine now. And within three weeks I'll receive the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Dark Star, another pedal that you got me excited for. I can't wait to be able to combine them!
    I'm not over-exaggerating when I say that you gave a miserable old musician some fresh blood. I feel excited again. And I need to thank you for it, because I truely believe that without you doing this demo, I'd still be struggling to regain my inspiration. Composing has been the most important thing in my life since I was 5 years old (not kidding). I lost it. Therefore I lost my main purpose of living. But you gave it back to me. And off course there was no way you could have done this on purpose. It's just a silly coincidence. But it was the most important coincidence that could ever happen.
    So I thank you for that. I will always be indebted to you.
    Love, Mario ❤️

    Amazing demo!!!!!!!! Had all of these plans to buy other stuff this year. Stumbled upon this pedal and jumped on it. My first of the new year. Got it and originally thought, this thing is worthless. Then I spent a weekend with it and found that it did things no other chorus pedal would do. One trick I did after watching one of your other videos that recommended putting a reverb wash in front of chorus was to double up on chorus pedals. One before the reverb and the shallow water after. Things got just absolutely crazy!

    I just put in an order for my second Shallow Water. It's that good, and your review really pinpoints the beautiful sounds that can be conjured out of this box of magic.
    One thing though, the first few days after I got mine, I struggled a bit, but ime, the key to this box, as well as stuff from OBNE and Pladask (shoutout!), is to not be afraid of going wet (sometimes 100%). Another that come to mind, is how much the sound affects the playing. It makes the guitar become sort of a different instrument, with regards to touch and sound.
    It's a word we throw around casually, but this _is_ beautiful: 1:04

Part of the brilliance that resides here is that he shares what he learns and puts great thought and care into harnessing his own creativity for our benefit. Such is the nature of a great teacher.

This sounds to me just as good. There's something about that effect that I just can't hear enough of. You've done such a beautiful job demo'ing the pedal. Subscribed!

      I just got this pedal a week ago. Re-watched this video to help dial in some settings that can work for me (was wandering in the dark a bit). I rearranged some surrounding pedals (OD in front), and I think I'm finally getting the hang of this one - I'm going for a goldilocks setting - not too subtle, not too over the top ; ) I can tell it is going to be an always on thing. Thanks again.

      That's exactly how I think of Vibrato. I often use it last in chain in order to simulate committing sound/recordings to tape. Just sounds so alive 🙌

    I have The Clone Theory and it does those 80s chorus sounds perfectly - not to mention that iconic vibrato magic! - and I'm wondering if the Shallow Water can get 'there', too?
    It obviously does it's own unique thing very well, so for that reason alone I will be picking one up!
    Thanks!

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  6 лет назад +2

      I wouldn't go for the Shallow Water if you want classic hi-fi 80s chorus and vibrato tones. Shallow Water goes more for the lo-fi feel. The beauty in the broken. The delightfulness in the disintegrating. There's ghosts in this machine, and you need to be willing and able to dance with them. If you're up for that, then pedals don't come better than the Shallow Water. It's by far my favorite modulation pedal.

      You can get a fairly similar sound with a Memory Boy Deluxe, analogue modulated delay. It also has an expression out, which you can attribute to different things, including delay time, which means you can manually control fluctuations and flutters.

    Damn, I might need this one now... But I already have an EQD Sea Machine and it seems like there might be some overlap. Would you agree?

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  6 лет назад +1

      I also have a Sea Machine, and no, there's no overlap. At least not in my book. Yes, they both do chorus tones, but it's very very different chorus tones. Sea Machine is way more clean and pristine, whereas the Shallow Water is more gritty and lo-fi sounding. You could easily have both on your board. I do that from time to time. Then I use the Sea Machine for classic pristine chorus tones and the Shallow Water for warbly lo-fi tape vibratos. Killer combo! ❤

  • @sethlover6498
    @sethlover6498 6 месяцев назад

    I have a chorus and flanger and this just hits different... this is going on the board immediately even though i already have the other two pedals.. Great video!!!
    question: before or after dirt pedals?

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  Месяц назад

      This one is definitely very different to your classic chorus and flanger pedals. It's a nostalgia machine :)
      Placement all depends on tonal preference. You get a cleaner and more pronounced modulation effect if you place it after dirt. That's my personal preference. But placing before dirt can also yield really cool results. So always experiment with placement and figure out what your own sonic preference is.

      The reverse sound you're hearing is me reversing the loop that's playing into the Shaloow Water. So Shallow Water can't do reverse effects. Just glorious lo-fi modulation :)

    As someone who already owns a meet maude which can be set to do a similar thing I question if the shallow water is redundant. I don‘t want to invest so much when the meet maude is already 80% or so there. STEFAN, please, could You comment on that ...

    • @thepedalzone

      I have the Meet Maude as well, and I find the Shallow Water far from redundant. I actually prefer the Shallow Water. It just has the perfect unpredictable lo-fi vibe going. The closest I've heard to real lo-fi tape recordings.
