Thank you for this review! I’ve been looking for a new mic and was swaying towards the sennheiser from the written reviews but hearing the sontronics solo i was sold! It arrived today and did not disappoint. While it is a bulky mic, it gives a louder, much richer sound and picks up the voice really well. Thanks again!
Thanks for reviews guys. You have inspired me. I popped into Andertons on Thursday. After trying some mics out. I absolutely loved the Sontronics Solo and purchased it. Supurb sound. So warm and clear. Plus great gain before feedback. Nice lows as well as highs. Such a great tone. Your staff were brilliant, friendly and helpful.
This series is great. I don't know much about mics, but I'm very interested in them, so getting comparisons in different price brackets is great. Keep it up!
Roberto Cabrera Thanks very much dude! I'll pass on your pixel comments to the video guys. Thanks again for watching and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more mic content coming soon! - Brad
Great video thank you and really useful. Some suggestions if you don't mind... As this is a live mic test, can we not use a reflection shield as no one uses one live and we want to know how it handles ambient noise because that's what you get live? Can the clips be longer and with perhaps some different styles / volumes? Softer vs rockier for example?.What works for Mary Spender might not work for Lizzy Hale. (Maybe some male vocals too?) Can we clearly mark on the video what mics are being demoed? When the clips for the all black ones came up it wasn't easy to see which mic was in use. Thank you - more of these please! We have male and female singers in the band and apart from just using SM58s because that's what you do - it would be great to introduce other things if they are better for what we do.
Salisbury Simon All very good suggestions and certainly some things there that we will definitely implement! Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more content! - Brad
I just got a a Sontronics Solo while I went out to buy an iRig Duo. We compared it with SM58 too but with Nylon Guitar, Solo was way better handling anything out of guitar than SM58.
Betterburg And like we say in the videos, it's a rough guide, other people will prefer different mics. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe! - Brad
It would've been good to hear them without the reflection shield, so we can hear the differences in polar patterns. The supercardioids should sound different to the 58, but we can never know because you made it irrelevant.
The Sontronics Solo is pretty much "The New Kid On The Block" when compared to the Shure & the Sennheiser that have been on the scene for many, many years but it is a pretty good sounding microphone however for me I would find it very uncomfortable to handle as I really dislike thick bodied microphones as I find them unergonomic
I've had a Sontronics Solo for about eighteen months and it is an excellent microphone but the handling noise created by the milled finish is a real problem.
Whoever is looking for beauty in the voice, for that depth, the fullness of the voice, will always choose Sennheiser over the hollow, empty, soulless shursm58 and sontronics... SENNHEISER IS KING, those who say otherwise have no idea about singing and music...Or their music is also hollow and soulless like shure...
Does it make sense to test live mics in studio application only? No handling noise test, no monitor bleed test (even Reflexion filter? Why?) ? Come on...
Without wedges and drums blasting away, this tells us only part of the story - on this test I preferred the 58, which I hate using live owing to all the rubbish it picks up.
Need to test low voices - bass and baritone - as no one wants to have carry mics for females and mics for males. I don't think you should use a sound shield and, ideally, you'd do the test with a backing track if not a backing band to get more close to a gig environment. As shown on the video these weren't tests at all. Sorry (big fan of Anderton's).
Sorry to say but......Totally unhelpful test.... 40 secs of test in an 8 minute video!!!! since when does anyone sing live with a reflection filter!!... songs have different dynamics, so why would you compare mics at different dynamic points in a song..... "and we're never gonna survive".... a lively part of the song.... so the mic will shine... use the same part of the song to test please.... and singing in different keys.... thanks for trying.... but I'd remove this video and redo as the video doesn't do anything for Andertons (who produce great videos) reputation.... may seem harsh.... but c'mon!!!
True. They can be somewhat interchangable though to a certain extent, and many manufacturers nearly exclusively produce either one or the other as far as tighter polar patterns go. Beyerdynamic and Audix are pretty much all "hypercardioid" while Shure and Sennheiser are all "Supercardioid".
Just to clarify, 1st was Shure SM58, second was Sennheiser 845, 3rd was Sontronics Solo.
Senheiser e845 - It is sturdy, reliable and virtually no handling noise.

2:49 omg, you did an amazing snare with your laugh, please teach me how to do it, it really sounded amazing
What, it didn’t occur to you guys to label which mic was in use, so the viewer would know what was going on?

Also, I think this video looks a little bit pixelated even at 1080p.

What a Beautiful voice !

Cheers Brad and already subbed!
Salisbury Simon 👍
Agreed

Funny, but I like SM58 more than others. Inho it's not dull, it's less hiss.

I agree
Would be interesting to hear the Shure Beta SM58A vs the Sontronics Solo. Might be a little more comparable if you prefer something a bit more open?
Thanks; useful comparison :D

Sm58 has a lot
More headroom and spacial in sound. My seinnheiser e935 is a bit grainny and very Hi-Fi a purity.
Ever heard of dive right in? I'll find another video
would have been helpful to post the name of each mic as you sang thru them.

Cant beat the sm58 that Bono total characteristic
I prefer my shure sm58. I bought So many mics, AKG, S.E. (im not very lavish as a singer)
I've had a Sontronics Solo for about eighteen months and it is an excellent microphone but the handling noise created by the milled finish is a real problem.
The shure sm58 sounds more natural and warm . Other mics sound more bright .
Whoever is looking for beauty in the voice, for that depth, the fullness of the voice, will always choose Sennheiser over the hollow, empty, soulless shursm58 and sontronics...

Beautiful voice

tnx for this !

live condenser mic?

I couldn't tell which one sounded better because I wasn't singing through it.
If I buy any of these microphone, will I sing like this? Lol
Hello
Please can we hear Meg sing into an Aston Spirit
Thanks
Peace and love from Bristol, England

What is the name of the last mic
Shure was best
SM 58 is king dynamic mic. But Sontronics solo too sound good.
They are super cardiod not hyper cardiod... urgh...

They were just talking for 4 minutes,No they just sang on mic for 1 min and rest od the video is talking,
It is shade that Audix is not on this test. That is so undrated brand
Krzysztof Szymaszek Definitely something for us to do in the future! Thanks for watching and been sure to subscribe for more mic videos - Brad
Schade in German: Pity in English.
You are welcome ;)
no lvl match as usual...gay
Hello guys. What the audio interface (sound card) did you use for the record?
