I miss Saijins being savage warriors, it gave more weight to the idea that Goku was someone who had overcome their nature by being surrounded by the right people to eventually become a good person. It also provided additional context to moments like Gohan's snapping and toying with Cell.
I'm really in love with the original design. Combined with the headband from the special it would've been a 10/10. I love how the hair (like the armbands) are a nod to Gokuu, without being so on-the-nose. I love how basic it all looks, like he's almost a background character, this is the kinda of armour you'd throw on a low class no-name. And wasn't that the point? Bardock's story is that of someone who struggled, failed and was totally forgotten.

The original looks the most primal and, given this is the past, the most faithful to how the armors would have been. The redesign is also great for the Bardock tv special. Minus, the character is thinned down; the armor looks out of place. Like Minus, itself, it's a mess.

Not really the redesign while unique feels pretty out of place compared to the other saiyans armours. Minus atleast make sense since they are an army it's a standard battle armour given to majority of the saiyans hence why his battle armour was pretty similar to the other saiyans (being yellow blue and black).
Never liked Saiyan designs when they have their entire legs exposed, although I like the OG Bardock hair. Classic Bardock will always be my favourite Bardock
Bardocks OG DBZ design has been my favorite. His Pre-Toriyama Design one is always rad especially with the hair. There's nothing wrong with his DBS Broly design, it looks really great, it's just that it doesn't leave that much of an impact.
@@loregasmic exactly. bardock wasn't inherently special. neither was goku. the point Akira tried to make is that it's not what they are born, their natural power or gifts, that make them special, it's their actions, their willingness to fight for what they thought was right. bardock was just a kinder than average saiyajin warrior who, wanting the best for his son, chose to make the effort to send him away, to give him a chance at a better life. his actions were what made him special. same with Goku. he wasn't born an intimidating, muscly, powerful saiyajin warrior. everything he accomplished, he did so out of his own determination. it wasn't his innate talent or power; really, in comparison to even raditz, he possessed neither of those and yet, here he is today, standing proudly beside gods and angels, fighting those that terrified a being not even every saiyajin together could have battled. bardock was just one more saiyajin. one among the millions of others like him. ultimately insignificant on his own. but his actions and their consequences show that it mattered not who he was born, what he was given, but what he gave back. it didn't matter what he looked like or what he was. he was bardock, and bardock didn't need to look mean or scary to show his strength or uniqueness. heroes don't wear capes.

Wow I really like the original design by Nakatusuru, much more primal and believable but yet you can see it is Goku's father without it being too obvious. Shame they didn't stick with this design.
They have their place. It doesn't help their popularity, however, when they are showing up in the past and retconning the fuck out of the original armor designs. They look good on Broly, but on Bardock? X No way

Something that really bothers me is that Bardock's minus scar looks like Yamcha's X scar when originally it wasnt quite like that. It's a small detail that makes me hate looking at new Bardock. I'd say I prefer final design for FoG Bardock body, but wow that original hairstyle I kind of wish was kept for Bardock.
Yeah I noticed near the end of making this how small they made the scar look but yeah Bardock's original hairstyle I think still suited the character in it's own way that can easily be overlooked
People: “oh yeah Dragon ball minus Bardock’s story was 11/10” (even though it’s literally just a clone of Superman‘s backstory) DBM Bardock literally sends his son away because of a feeling, vs the DBZ Bardock who had more than enough reason that frieza would blow up their planet.
It's one thing that they changed it from being a similar but creative take on the superman origin, to a total copy paste. I don't really care about Bardock having futuresight vs a "feeling". The biggest sin, my primary issue, it totally fucks up the reason Raditz ever came looking for Goku and was mad about his failure to extinguish the life on earth. Totally Bizarre. Always hate when a 30 year old story is changed for no reason.

I know this is old, but… how is the new Bardock great story wise? The guy had a great story back in the special and now with Minus and Broly he’s just Jor-El.
The new Bardock is horrible storywise. It's a generic Superman origin story clone, whereas the original was a unique revisionist take on it. It was more interesting to see a parental figure having no influence on the safety of their child from a massacre, and the son only being saved by chance for evil purposes. The new version also does not fit with the original story and theme of Goku being an outcast from a evil people.
I believe the Xeno design is worth mentioning, it by far has the coolest armor and even keeps the headband (which is honestly the most important part of his design imo)
I find the original design the best. I like the muscled look on the characters that seems to have been taken out of more modern Dragon Ball. Bardock looks like an absolute badass here. (10/10) The Toriyama redesign is OK, but I don't think the blue leggings go well with the red clothing around the ankles, and not a fan of the toned down muscles. I wouldn't say the design is bad or anything, he just doesn't have that edge compared to the original. (7/10) The new design, honestly, just looks very weak-sauce. Why do his legs look like sticks, lol? And the rest of his suit just looks so goddamn generic. It looks boring and non-threatening for a Saiyan warrior. (4/10)
As a professional artist myself I have to agree: Nakatsuru's design really is the best here. It's a work from a professional character designer, who's used to express personality through sheer design. Toriyama's, on the other hand, is duller for sure as he's not the best at it - mainly drawing on the fly without any real meaning behind, besides "I like it this way". (Toriyama is a terrific mangaka, a genius you can say, but character design is simply a whole different thing)
Great video, my first thought at seeing the first design was that it was pretty lazy but after hearing you explain the choices that led to it, I have to admit it's probably my favorite Bardock in the end. The Saiyan arc is my favorite of Dragon Ball because Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta used to send shivers through my spine because you could both understand and reject their primal, cruel nature. And being half naked shows their absolute disregard for safety, appearance, and peace. And of course it made Goku, the reformed Saiyan, shine even more. It had a lot of subtext on morality, nature and nurture, etc, that went straight to the garbage bin for the boring manicheism that we sought to escape from by reading DBZ. That new Bardock's body language is even worse that his legs, with his grumpy kid attitude, stiff shoulders, dead stare, weak neck and dangling tail. I'm sorry, but if he despised Kakarot for his weakness in the Special, here in Minus he looks straight-up retarded with a major motor disability. Also those squared shoulders are ugly. The rounded shoulders were both elegant to look at and understandable as a defensive accessory. Every time my eyes take a hard turn on the squared shoulders, I get an unpleasant feeling. How to say it, it's like the mp3 of a cult song who has random audio cuts in the chorus.
Yeah once I read the backstory behind it I really vibed with it aswell and I absolutely loved the saiyan saga for all those reasons. Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta had such a formidable feeling compared to what we had seen so far in the story. And it's partly why I liked that Nakatsuru left the leggings off Bardock as it gave a more primal look to him :)
I don’t just like dbz Bardock for his design but because of his character. The Saiyans weren’t kind-hearted people and he is depicted as a ruthless person who massacred an entire planet. You can also see his change in character as well when he realizes that what he’s doing is wrong and he’s just like frieza. But in DBS Broly he just goes off a feeling and wants to do something for someone else for once which doesn’t make a lot of sense.
It somewhat makes sense. He has a realization something is wrong, something is about to go wrong. So with his last chance he wants to do something right. Buuut dbz is still way better.
I mean, even dbz Bardock was fairly kind for a saiyan. Compare him to vegeta for example. Vegeta doesnt give a damn about Raditz or Nappa. He fucking executes Nappa when he asks him for help for gods sake lol. Then there’s Bardock, who was shocked and angered when he found his dead crew. The exchange he had with Toma was pretty touching, given the fact that he stares at his friends lifeless face for seconds in deep silence before laying him to rest. He even wipes his dead comrades face clean of blood and takes his arm band as a memento of him. Then he stands up and looks around at his crew visibly disturbed. I don’t think Toriyama’s direction of Bardock is bad at all. Let’s not forget that in the beginning of Minus, he is literally attacking a planet lol. I think the reason people feel so let down is because we didn’t get to see Bardock in action until his final blast. Remember that the movie was originally longer than the final cut, and they likely cut Bardock’s final fight against Frieza’s army, but its still implied to have happened since his armor is broken and he is sorrounded by Frieza soldiers when he charges up his blast.
@@Hero774 but vegeta was ruthless even compared to the average Saiyan. When raditz died and vegeta and nappa were discussing about the Dragon balls, nappa was the one who suggested that they wish back raditz. Vegeta was the one who dismissed his idea and said they wish for immortality instead. Also when vegeta killed that one saibaman after it just barely survived the z fighters, nappa asked him why he would kill it when it was still alive. So when vegeta kills nappa after Goku crippled him, that was clearly brutal, even for Saiyan standards, as nappa didn't believe that the saibaman should be killed even though it was probably too weak to fight now. Plus Nappa was by no means soft or too kind either, considering the fact he blew up an entire city killed most of the z fighters, had no problem killing a four year old child, and has probably killed hundreds of thousands of people. And since nappa was already in his late twentys to early thirties when planet vegeta was destroyed, he was probably a lot more accustomed to Saiyan customs and culture than vegeta was, especially considering the fact that he was the prince, so his childhood was definelty way different that the average Saiyan warrior.

I really like Toriyama's first redesign far over the second redesign. The original primal look definitely fits, but I prefer the leggings and coloring and, on top of that, maker him look sleeker but still built like a powerful soldier would be that would fit combining both speed and agility with his strength as seen in the actual special. Also while Bardock having his own hair would be nice, it's a very simple and very effective way of showing he his the father of Goku.
Proto Bardock is neat, but I think it lacks pizazz for a POV character. I always thought Z Bardock's green had a sort of military vibe which meshed well with his voice direction in the English dub. Minus Bardock is definitely less interesting overall but this design fits his new, softer personality well.
Glad I'm not the only one who liked the English voice for bardock (sonny strait). I think he really suited the character. But yeah I was thinking the same with the green myself, it's a military colour so it fits him especially well and the colour palette overall brings life to the character!
I think a fusion of the first and redesign would be best. The redesign colors and adding the bandana and keeping the first hair would be what would look best to me.
That original design would have been awesome. It had that primal, caveman-like feel that I believe matches the berserker/warrior style of the Saiyans. I also loved the TV special's ultimate design. Its the new redesign that the issues arise. Its just inferior in almost everyway. Not to mention it completely contradicts the uniform and personality of Frieza's Saiyans at that time period. I'll always be grateful to Toriyama for making this wonderful series, but the guy's just not the same in modern DragonBall, imo.
Definitely like the first draft version best with the one they used for the Bardock special being second. I HATE the new uniform with the shorter squared shoulders and the retconning of the Saiyans from barbaric warrior based society to a more pitiable state with lots of non combat saiyans and pacifists. I also don't like how thin he made most of the Saiyans and the loose tail wrap as opposed to the tight coil it used to be.

Original Design: Primal badass monke, will crush your skull, a true warrior monke who has been through tough times and many wars. Redesign: Less primal but still monke, looks like a guy who's been through a couple of battles. Awesome head band(turned red by blood), and awesomely coloured. Dbs/Db minus: Has inconsistent armor, plain, looks like a shrimp even though he's a warrior(his own son, raditz who was also a low class saiyan, was bigger and buffer)
I feel like people who say Super Broly has more emotion and depth never actually watched the Bardock special. Z Bardock's bandana has more character than Super Bardock lol
I like the OG design and the DBZ design!! I really appreciate this video and I love that they use the OG's hairstyle when Goku goes Super Saiyan or when he's using the Kaioken!
I mean, to a degree, Paragus and Broly make sense as they were marooned for years. The mental state could go either way at that point, from bat-shit crazy from isolation, to grateful for being found with enough sanity to be re-inserted into whatever 'society" they happen upon. Gine, idk.
Toriyama's OG redesign is actually very clever to made - if you just imagine the OG desing being on screen the whole time - he would've been blanding with all the background extras of saiyans, he looks TOO generic with them, even with the color paulette. The final design is very on point - at the same time is not something out of touch and too over the top but clearly visually standing out on it's own, without breaking his saiyan likeness in the same time!
But that’s the thing though, Bardock was just a generic low ranking saiyan, he should look generic and just like the other saiyans. Only high ranking or powerful saiyans were given different outfits to stand out, like Vegeta.
@@user-zz8ye7gc4r I mean, if you take away the backstory Z Broly blows super Broly out of the water in terms of sadism, brutality, clothing, design, animation, fighting style and threatening presence(as an antagonist.) z brolys voice lines are so much better than "AAAAAAAAA." Z Broly's SSJ1 form looks so much better too and he made the family Kamehameha a thing. If it wasn't for brolys backstory few people would actually have a defense against Z Broly. Super Broly is just Hulk as a Saiyan. Z Broly's much more entertaining regardless of his character

I remember watching the TV special all the time as a kid, I loved that design of bardock. I never saw the first design before and to me it looks nice, but it looks a bit bland.The DBS Broly movie bardock looks like the worst to me, like the original design it looks super bland and just doesn't seem like my bardock.
if the pre redesign had pants and bandana I would feel robbed by the new design because god damn I like how his hair looks and something about him looks more badass and primal but that's just my opinion

That's a hard choice, I guess my favorite is the manga version of the gi he got from king kai, the colour's are especially vibrant and I really like that time period in the series. And the other one would be his gi at the end of Z, I don't know what it is about the colours but they give off a nice calm feel, really hope it returns one day
For me the Og. Bardock was the Prime example of your average Saiyan-jin, what we could expect from Warrior culture, the Saiyan Culture was always took a aside, how they value more the Power than anything else, how the same environment was crucial in how Goku, Vegeta and the whole next Gen develop and achieve the Legendary Power of Super Saiyan. why I said this. Easy Goku always took a little more time to growth his ties with earth, with his friends how his style of life was crucial, and how the Saiyan's from the past were? Well in Short way to said, they were Spacial Vikings? Always on the field, always in fights, his blood thirst, and never allowing to form bond with his pairs or with his planet.

Probably bc I’m most used to it but the design from the special is my favorite, I rlly like how the lack of shoulder pads and sleeves makes him stand out, along w/ the color palette. Speaking of standing out, that’s something his Minus/Super Broly design fails to do for me; the scar isn’t enough, he just looks like Goku in Saiyan armor. I wish they’d at least let him keep the bloody headband. obv not terrible but the colors make it too generic for my tastes
Thing is I dont think the headband is that important to his design when he didn't even start of with it. That's something belongs to the original Bardock as a part of his story.

I remember back in the day when Multiverse was popular, there was this rumor that one out of the two guys that drew it was quitting, and the one remaining couldn't really draw that characters in model. Everyone complained that Multiverse was going to look like crap now. Well... That's pretty much how Toriyama draws now.
I came in this anime for the build up characters with normal size heads who looks so close to reality in the same time staying cartoonish in some details and especially in faces (and even faces have so much human details almost NONE of the anime have, it's is so rare to have somehow detailed faces in the anime at all!). It gives so much live in what's happening and in the events! All the battles feels SO much more natural and hazardous because of seeing so close to living people characters making each other bleed and landing so devastating punches and attakcs! DBS Bardock's desing is just takes out literally all of it and makes itself into a Cartoon Network show that occasionally having blood sometimes (much more infrequent than before. And only in manga version). It's literally nothing of what is so gravitating in "Dragon Ball". It's just not good anyhow.

Wow, Minus looked terrible, this makes me glad that Toriyama doesn't fraw manga's anymore, the design and art for new Bardock looked much better in Broly at least.
I far and away prefer the movie special version. The Nakatsuru version looks very unrefined, which may be the point, but it doesn't look too pleasing on the eyes imo. The Minus version can burn in the deepest pit of hell.
I honestly kind of prefer Nakatsuru's original colors. For me, it feels a little more gritty and reinforces the idea that Bardock is nothing special. He's a low rank Saiyan warrior who tried fighting for the name of his race but failed. Even if he's the focus of the special, he's not special by any means. So I think it works well for him.
He wasnt special in status, but he was certainly special in the movie. His team's rapidly growing strength was a big catalyst for Freiza going ahead and destroying Vegeta. Freiza even sent his right hand man to personally dispose of them

I really liked bardocks dbz look it was Frieza soldier design but a bit unique, and honestly just shows off his badass self. The dbs look, looked alright I guess but we had the dbz look for so long giving him a regular frieza force suit was just...Ehh?
Hmm... How about keep the Original Design Hair, use the Minus/DB Super look but swap the blue with red, & keeps his red bandanna then boom we got a Bardock that is a mix of the three. Lastly, he is a tad buff like in the DBZ Special at least.

I don't like the Minus look. Sure hes more of a low class looking character now but almost to the point of being stock-looking. Forgettable. His pose kind of makes him look lanky and unimposing. That and his legs. Too skinny. I'd go for the TV special design for Bardock.

I think a best-of-all-worlds approach would be where he has the Nakatsuru hair for uniqueness, with the Shintani uniform since he’s just a commoner. But then once he decides to lead the resistance against Freeza, he dons the Nakatsuru barbarian-style garb.
The original designs for Bardock&his crew were worse IMO I'm glad toriyama corrected them, though his Minus Bardock is just trash, too skinny, not rugged enough and his armour's design is too modern. This is the same style of armour shishami&Tacoma wore, it makes no sense for bardock to wear them.
Yeah I said the same in regards to dbs bardocks armour. And although I'm also glad the crew where redesigned Nakatsurs's Bardock provided an excellent base for Toriyama to work of and is great in it's own right.

the og id give that 7/10 the toriyama design from z : 8.5/10 since i did like it alot and when i saw it,bardock became my favarite character and he is still one of my favarites the dbs retcon: id put that on 9/10 if he had red hand bands so ill give him 8/10 (these scores are my opinion) also i think the reason people dont like the new bardock as much is cuz we saw how cool and awosome the bardock from the special was because we actually saw him fight dodoria and the freeza soilders but we havent seen anything of what this dbs bardock can do he is prolly not as strong as the old one but still, it was a movie about broly so they could;nt waste time on other characters but in the short time he had I still liked him,hopefully we get a special manga chapter or episode for the new bardock too.

Bardocks OG DBZ design has been my favorite. His Pre-Toriyama Design one is always rad especially with the hair. There's nothing wrong with his DBS Broly design, it looks really great, it's just that it doesn't leave that much of an impact.
I agree but that was probably the point he wanted to make. That Bardock was just an average low-class warrior, the kind you wouldn't look twice at.

@@loregasmic exactly. bardock wasn't inherently special. neither was goku. the point Akira tried to make is that it's not what they are born, their natural power or gifts, that make them special, it's their actions, their willingness to fight for what they thought was right. bardock was just a kinder than average saiyajin warrior who, wanting the best for his son, chose to make the effort to send him away, to give him a chance at a better life. his actions were what made him special. same with Goku. he wasn't born an intimidating, muscly, powerful saiyajin warrior. everything he accomplished, he did so out of his own determination. it wasn't his innate talent or power; really, in comparison to even raditz, he possessed neither of those and yet, here he is today, standing proudly beside gods and angels, fighting those that terrified a being not even every saiyajin together could have battled.
bardock was just one more saiyajin. one among the millions of others like him. ultimately insignificant on his own. but his actions and their consequences show that it mattered not who he was born, what he was given, but what he gave back. it didn't matter what he looked like or what he was. he was bardock, and bardock didn't need to look mean or scary to show his strength or uniqueness.

Wow I really like the original design by Nakatusuru, much more primal and believable but yet you can see it is Goku's father without it being too obvious. Shame they didn't stick with this design.

Something that really bothers me is that Bardock's minus scar looks like Yamcha's X scar when originally it wasnt quite like that. It's a small detail that makes me hate looking at new Bardock. I'd say I prefer final design for FoG Bardock body, but wow that original hairstyle I kind of wish was kept for Bardock.
Yeah I noticed near the end of making this how small they made the scar look but yeah Bardock's original hairstyle I think still suited the character in it's own way that can easily be overlooked

DBM Bardock literally sends his son away because of a feeling, vs the DBZ Bardock who had more than enough reason that frieza would blow up their planet.
It's one thing that they changed it from being a similar but creative take on the superman origin, to a total copy paste. I don't really care about Bardock having futuresight vs a "feeling".
The biggest sin, my primary issue, it totally fucks up the reason Raditz ever came looking for Goku and was mad about his failure to extinguish the life on earth. Totally Bizarre. Always hate when a 30 year old story is changed for no reason.

I know this is old, but… how is the new Bardock great story wise? The guy had a great story back in the special and now with Minus and Broly he’s just Jor-El.
The new Bardock is horrible storywise. It's a generic Superman origin story clone, whereas the original was a unique revisionist take on it. It was more interesting to see a parental figure having no influence on the safety of their child from a massacre, and the son only being saved by chance for evil purposes. The new version also does not fit with the original story and theme of Goku being an outcast from a evil people.
I like the first one, where his hair style isn’t exactly the same as goku
I believe the Xeno design is worth mentioning, it by far has the coolest armor and even keeps the headband (which is honestly the most important part of his design imo)

The Toriyama redesign is OK, but I don't think the blue leggings go well with the red clothing around the ankles, and not a fan of the toned down muscles. I wouldn't say the design is bad or anything, he just doesn't have that edge compared to the original. (7/10)
The new design, honestly, just looks very weak-sauce. Why do his legs look like sticks, lol? And the rest of his suit just looks so goddamn generic. It looks boring and non-threatening for a Saiyan warrior. (4/10)

As a professional artist myself I have to agree: Nakatsuru's design really is the best here.
It's a work from a professional character designer, who's used to express personality through sheer design.
Toriyama's, on the other hand, is duller for sure as he's not the best at it - mainly drawing on the fly without any real meaning behind, besides "I like it this way".
(Toriyama is a terrific mangaka, a genius you can say, but character design is simply a whole different thing)
fun fact: Bardocks original design in the manga appeared in a flashback.. so bardock has randomly changed outfits in canon.
Great video, my first thought at seeing the first design was that it was pretty lazy but after hearing you explain the choices that led to it, I have to admit it's probably my favorite Bardock in the end. The Saiyan arc is my favorite of Dragon Ball because Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta used to send shivers through my spine because you could both understand and reject their primal, cruel nature. And being half naked shows their absolute disregard for safety, appearance, and peace. And of course it made Goku, the reformed Saiyan, shine even more. It had a lot of subtext on morality, nature and nurture, etc, that went straight to the garbage bin for the boring manicheism that we sought to escape from by reading DBZ.
That new Bardock's body language is even worse that his legs, with his grumpy kid attitude, stiff shoulders, dead stare, weak neck and dangling tail. I'm sorry, but if he despised Kakarot for his weakness in the Special, here in Minus he looks straight-up retarded with a major motor disability.
Also those squared shoulders are ugly. The rounded shoulders were both elegant to look at and understandable as a defensive accessory. Every time my eyes take a hard turn on the squared shoulders, I get an unpleasant feeling. How to say it, it's like the mp3 of a cult song who has random audio cuts in the chorus.
Yeah once I read the backstory behind it I really vibed with it aswell and I absolutely loved the saiyan saga for all those reasons. Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta had such a formidable feeling compared to what we had seen so far in the story. And it's partly why I liked that Nakatsuru left the leggings off Bardock as it gave a more primal look to him :)

I don’t just like dbz Bardock for his design but because of his character. The Saiyans weren’t kind-hearted people and he is depicted as a ruthless person who massacred an entire planet. You can also see his change in character as well when he realizes that what he’s doing is wrong and he’s just like frieza. But in DBS Broly he just goes off a feeling and wants to do something for someone else for once which doesn’t make a lot of sense.
It somewhat makes sense. He has a realization something is wrong, something is about to go wrong. So with his last chance he wants to do something right.
Buuut dbz is still way better.
Also, it'zs not just anyone he did something for, but it was for his own kid.
I mean, even dbz Bardock was fairly kind for a saiyan. Compare him to vegeta for example. Vegeta doesnt give a damn about Raditz or Nappa. He fucking executes Nappa when he asks him for help for gods sake lol.
Then there’s Bardock, who was shocked and angered when he found his dead crew. The exchange he had with Toma was pretty touching, given the fact that he stares at his friends lifeless face for seconds in deep silence before laying him to rest. He even wipes his dead comrades face clean of blood and takes his arm band as a memento of him. Then he stands up and looks around at his crew visibly disturbed.
I don’t think Toriyama’s direction of Bardock is bad at all. Let’s not forget that in the beginning of Minus, he is literally attacking a planet lol. I think the reason people feel so let down is because we didn’t get to see Bardock in action until his final blast. Remember that the movie was originally longer than the final cut, and they likely cut Bardock’s final fight against Frieza’s army, but its still implied to have happened since his armor is broken and he is sorrounded by Frieza soldiers when he charges up his blast.
@@Hero774 but vegeta was ruthless even compared to the average Saiyan. When raditz died and vegeta and nappa were discussing about the Dragon balls, nappa was the one who suggested that they wish back raditz. Vegeta was the one who dismissed his idea and said they wish for immortality instead. Also when vegeta killed that one saibaman after it just barely survived the z fighters, nappa asked him why he would kill it when it was still alive. So when vegeta kills nappa after Goku crippled him, that was clearly brutal, even for Saiyan standards, as nappa didn't believe that the saibaman should be killed even though it was probably too weak to fight now. Plus Nappa was by no means soft or too kind either, considering the fact he blew up an entire city killed most of the z fighters, had no problem killing a four year old child, and has probably killed hundreds of thousands of people. And since nappa was already in his late twentys to early thirties when planet vegeta was destroyed, he was probably a lot more accustomed to Saiyan customs and culture than vegeta was, especially considering the fact that he was the prince, so his childhood was definelty way different that the average Saiyan warrior.

I really like Toriyama's first redesign far over the second redesign. The original primal look definitely fits, but I prefer the leggings and coloring and, on top of that, maker him look sleeker but still built like a powerful soldier would be that would fit combining both speed and agility with his strength as seen in the actual special. Also while Bardock having his own hair would be nice, it's a very simple and very effective way of showing he his the father of Goku.
Proto Bardock is neat, but I think it lacks pizazz for a POV character.
I always thought Z Bardock's green had a sort of military vibe which meshed well with his voice direction in the English dub.
Minus Bardock is definitely less interesting overall but this design fits his new, softer personality well.
Glad I'm not the only one who liked the English voice for bardock (sonny strait). I think he really suited the character. But yeah I was thinking the same with the green myself, it's a military colour so it fits him especially well and the colour palette overall brings life to the character!
I think a fusion of the first and redesign would be best. The redesign colors and adding the bandana and keeping the first hair would be what would look best to me.
That original design would have been awesome. It had that primal, caveman-like feel that I believe matches the berserker/warrior style of the Saiyans. I also loved the TV special's ultimate design. Its the new redesign that the issues arise. Its just inferior in almost everyway. Not to mention it completely contradicts the uniform and personality of Frieza's Saiyans at that time period. I'll always be grateful to Toriyama for making this wonderful series, but the guy's just not the same in modern DragonBall, imo.
Definitely like the first draft version best with the one they used for the Bardock special being second. I HATE the new uniform with the shorter squared shoulders and the retconning of the Saiyans from barbaric warrior based society to a more pitiable state with lots of non combat saiyans and pacifists. I also don't like how thin he made most of the Saiyans and the loose tail wrap as opposed to the tight coil it used to be.

Original Design: Primal badass monke, will crush your skull, a true warrior monke who has been through tough times and many wars.
Redesign: Less primal but still monke, looks like a guy who's been through a couple of battles. Awesome head band(turned red by blood), and awesomely coloured.
Dbs/Db minus: Has inconsistent armor, plain, looks like a shrimp even though he's a warrior(his own son, raditz who was also a low class saiyan, was bigger and buffer)
I feel like people who say Super Broly has more emotion and depth never actually watched the Bardock special. Z Bardock's bandana has more character than Super Bardock lol

Toriyama's OG redesign is actually very clever to made - if you just imagine the OG desing being on screen the whole time - he would've been blanding with all the background extras of saiyans, he looks TOO generic with them, even with the color paulette.
The final design is very on point - at the same time is not something out of touch and too over the top but clearly visually standing out on it's own, without breaking his saiyan likeness in the same time!
But that’s the thing though, Bardock was just a generic low ranking saiyan, he should look generic and just like the other saiyans. Only high ranking or powerful saiyans were given different outfits to stand out, like Vegeta.

Z Broly's SSJ1 form looks so much better too and he made the family Kamehameha a thing.
If it wasn't for brolys backstory few people would actually have a defense against Z Broly. Super Broly is just Hulk as a Saiyan. Z Broly's much more entertaining regardless of his character

I never saw the first design before and to me it looks nice, but it looks a bit bland.The DBS Broly movie bardock looks like the worst to me, like the original design it looks super bland and just doesn't seem like my bardock.

That's a hard choice, I guess my favorite is the manga version of the gi he got from king kai, the colour's are especially vibrant and I really like that time period in the series.
And the other one would be his gi at the end of Z, I don't know what it is about the colours but they give off a nice calm feel, really hope it returns one day

For me the Og. Bardock was the Prime example of your average Saiyan-jin, what we could expect from Warrior culture, the Saiyan Culture was always took a aside, how they value more the Power than anything else, how the same environment was crucial in how Goku, Vegeta and the whole next Gen develop and achieve the Legendary Power of Super Saiyan. why I said this. Easy Goku always took a little more time to growth his ties with earth, with his friends how his style of life was crucial, and how the Saiyan's from the past were? Well in Short way to said, they were Spacial Vikings? Always on the field, always in fights, his blood thirst, and never allowing to form bond with his pairs or with his planet.
This is how I generally feel about Bardock. If he has the look of Z but the story of Super, 11/10.
I think Nakatsuru’s design w/ the colors from the final design could’ve worked, but I don’t mind the change.
Probably bc I’m most used to it but the design from the special is my favorite, I rlly like how the lack of shoulder pads and sleeves makes him stand out, along w/ the color palette.
Speaking of standing out, that’s something his Minus/Super Broly design fails to do for me; the scar isn’t enough, he just looks like Goku in Saiyan armor. I wish they’d at least let him keep the bloody headband. obv not terrible but the colors make it too generic for my tastes
Thing is I dont think the headband is that important to his design when he didn't even start of with it. That's something belongs to the original Bardock as a part of his story.

I remember back in the day when Multiverse was popular, there was this rumor that one out of the two guys that drew it was quitting, and the one remaining couldn't really draw that characters in model. Everyone complained that Multiverse was going to look like crap now.
Well... That's pretty much how Toriyama draws now.
I came in this anime for the build up characters with normal size heads who looks so close to reality in the same time staying cartoonish in some details and especially in faces (and even faces have so much human details almost NONE of the anime have, it's is so rare to have somehow detailed faces in the anime at all!).
It gives so much live in what's happening and in the events! All the battles feels SO much more natural and hazardous because of seeing so close to living people characters making each other bleed and landing so devastating punches and attakcs!
DBS Bardock's desing is just takes out literally all of it and makes itself into a Cartoon Network show that occasionally having blood sometimes (much more infrequent than before. And only in manga version).
It's literally nothing of what is so gravitating in "Dragon Ball".
It's just not good anyhow.

Wow, Minus looked terrible, this makes me glad that Toriyama doesn't fraw manga's anymore, the design and art for new Bardock looked much better in Broly at least.
I far and away prefer the movie special version. The Nakatsuru version looks very unrefined, which may be the point, but it doesn't look too pleasing on the eyes imo. The Minus version can burn in the deepest pit of hell.

I honestly kind of prefer Nakatsuru's original colors. For me, it feels a little more gritty and reinforces the idea that Bardock is nothing special. He's a low rank Saiyan warrior who tried fighting for the name of his race but failed. Even if he's the focus of the special, he's not special by any means. So I think it works well for him.

He wasnt special in status, but he was certainly special in the movie. His team's rapidly growing strength was a big catalyst for Freiza going ahead and destroying Vegeta. Freiza even sent his right hand man to personally dispose of them

I really liked bardocks dbz look it was Frieza soldier design but a bit unique, and honestly just shows off his badass self. The dbs look, looked alright I guess but we had the dbz look for so long giving him a regular frieza force suit was just...Ehh?

How about keep the Original Design Hair, use the Minus/DB Super look but swap the blue with red, & keeps his red bandanna then boom we got a Bardock that is a mix of the three. Lastly, he is a tad buff like in the DBZ Special at least.

I don't like the Minus look. Sure hes more of a low class looking character now but almost to the point of being stock-looking. Forgettable. His pose kind of makes him look lanky and unimposing. That and his legs. Too skinny.

I think a best-of-all-worlds approach would be where he has the Nakatsuru hair for uniqueness, with the Shintani uniform since he’s just a commoner. But then once he decides to lead the resistance against Freeza, he dons the Nakatsuru barbarian-style garb.

The original designs for Bardock&his crew were worse IMO I'm glad toriyama corrected them, though his Minus Bardock is just trash, too skinny, not rugged enough and his armour's design is too modern. This is the same style of armour shishami&Tacoma wore, it makes no sense for bardock to wear them.
Yeah I said the same in regards to dbs bardocks armour. And although I'm also glad the crew where redesigned Nakatsurs's Bardock provided an excellent base for Toriyama to work of and is great in it's own right.

@@விஷ்ணு_கார்த்திக் i jsut like the hair and the shortness of the original. And i like shintani's lineart quite a lot. Bjt yes i do find the green looks overboard. The original design is the best imo. It screams "average saiyan" whilst the red bands give him something uniquely

the toriyama design from z : 8.5/10 since i did like it alot and when i saw it,bardock became my favarite character and he is still one of my favarites
the dbs retcon: id put that on 9/10 if he had red hand bands so ill give him 8/10

also i think the reason people dont like the new bardock as much is cuz we saw how cool and awosome the bardock from the special was because we actually saw him fight dodoria and the freeza soilders but we havent seen anything of what this dbs bardock can do he is prolly not as strong as the old one but still, it was a movie about broly so they could;nt waste time on other characters but in the short time he had I still liked him,hopefully we get a special manga chapter or episode for the new bardock too.

I agree. Bardock looks just like goku because that ties him to goku.
I like the original as a stand alone but it wouldn't work with his team designs so I prefer what we got in Bardock special although would have preferred if the hair was kept over so he would look more unique
