My husband’s aunt sent him outside to get a chicken to ring it’s neck for dinner. He tried but could not do it. She went outside calling him a city boy picked up the chicken rung it’s neck cleaned it and cooked it for Sunday dinner still talking about how Jerry could not ring that chickens neck but said “ look at him!”” he sure can eat it! “
That’s a cruel way to kill a chicken. You’re slit the neck and hang chicken up do so the blood can drain . You’re also supposed to say a prayer before slathering and animals. Only hillbilly are cruelty to animals.
Grandma’s Sunday dinner: fried chicken, mashed potatoes and milk gravy, Lima beans, corn, potato salad, white bread to put more gravy on, sliced tomatoes, deviled eggs, and plenty of iced tea!!! Such great memories as I watched you get the Crisco out and go to town! I know exactly what wonderful aromas were in your kitchen!!! ♥️
I too remember my grandma telling me to go out back and ring a chickens neck like I saw her do about every week. I tried didn't kill it well.i believe that was the first but lastm time I have ever panicked in my 88 years . By the way I separate the thigh from the drumstick when I cut up..I love your show and I relate to what you do in the kitchen.
It's been a long time since I made chicken like that. My mother made chicken like that. We had our own "yard birds", so it was always fresh. Her brother brought his family often for Sunday dinner and we ALWAYS had that chicken because it was his favorite. Thank you, Chris and Tammy for reminding me to "send us back in time". Love ya!
That's how my mom and both mamaws fried chicken!! And now I fry it that way too! And that chicken gravy is so good over some buttermilk biscuits!! About once a summer while our son was little I'd get up early and fry a batch if chicken, fix green beans, and make tater salad (made the tater salad the night before), and we'd load up our insulated cooler with that and head to Gatlinburg and Cherokee for a picnic!!!!!! I'd make enough food so we could eat a picnic lunch and supper down there!!! Those were such fun times. And we'd all about starve to death driving down there smelling that good fried chicken!🍗🥰
My Grandma, Katie McDaniel from Oklahoma, made buttermilk biscuits for every meal, flour gravy, she cooked her chicken in Crisco too and used a paper bag to flour the pieces up, she mashed her potatoes, and there was a green garden salad, (all from her garden) for lunch and dinner, then desert was usually peach cobbler or some kind of cake :) She passed in 1999 and I honor her with my cookin every meal. I cook just like her 💖 Thank you Tammy and Chris, you two give me such a warm feeling, because I was raised similar to y'all.
Hello Tammy and Chris Nichols and family this chicken is exactly the way my late Grandma and Mom and I still make it. This is the best chicken hands down. Way better than KFC. Love your U Tube channel and your recipes Tammy and Chris so glad I found your channel. Have a good evening and a wonderful Blessed weekend. God Bless you both and your family from a viewer in Toronto Ontario Canada
I've never seen anyone make chicken like my Grandma did, until now. Tall cast iron skillet. Lard or shortening. She always cut up a chicken. She insisted that pre cut chicken had bad parts they took off. She fried hers a long time turning it often. BUT she always had wishbones. It was sacrilege not to have a wishbone! 🤣 My personal favorite piece. This is the best chicken ever. She would occasionally make her biscuits with lard and you could tell the difference. Her white chicken gravy was the best. Once again. Chris has the best taste!!!!
I grew up with chicken my Granny had freshly killed and cleaned as well. The only change is that she soaked it in buttermilk before church on Sunday morning which made the chicken tenderized by he time we got home. She didn’t use egg either, the buttermilk took the place of it. She used self rising flour as well. The rest of her recipe was identical, cover for most of the cooking and then uncover and turn up the heat slightly at the end to crisp it up. I make this for my husband as often as possible, it is his favorite meal.
Hi Tammy and Chris... I had to laugh when you spoke of girls \ women not wanting to cut up a chicken but buy it prepared...That sounds exactly like my 2 daughters. I told them many times over the years about dividing up meat to save money but they still don't want to...I buy 3 lbs. of ground beef and separate it into 2 one pound containers and the other pound into patties then freeze it. How hard is that? But they don't want to handle the meat...ha ha ha That chicken looks delicious. God Bless You both... LuvYa! Bye from Ohio
My mom always made children on Sunday because it was cheap. She could feed 5 people on it . It was the best times of our life. I still can't fry chicken today but maybe watching you I might can. I'll try
My Mom used to make french fries in her cast iron skillet, and she cooked with Crisco. She would put the used Crisco back in a dedicated container and put it in the fridge. She reused it multiple times. You probably can't do that with something containing flour debris. Reusing it was more economical.
I don't know where Collard Valley is, but you have one heck of a southern accent, just like MY Grandma did. This video made me SO hungry for this... specially when you made the gravy and poured it on the potatoes. WOW.... good.
when i was a kid, id see my grandmother grab up 2 chickens, 1 in each hand, and ring their necks. then, she would scald and defeather em, cut em up, and fry em. she cooked on a woodfired cookstove. them was the days. ive had people tell me "we ate lots of chicken when i was young, so now, i dont like it". i think they probably didnt like chicken to begin with. ok. we did too, cause it was cheap, and we were by no means wealthy. at the store, lots of times mom would get wings for free, cause nobody wanted em, or thought they were "cool" like they do now, eatin hot wings. backs and necks too. mom would get them for free, boil em, and make chicken soup after she strained out the bones. even as much chicken as i ate when i was young, i could STILL eat fried chicken every day.
Flour, salt and pepper fried in lard, that's what I was raised on. Brings back good memories. Them beans I see on the side, any bean we had was seasoned with fatback.
So glad I found this video. I have my grandmother's buttermilk fried chicken recipe (written in her hand) & I couldn't understand what she meant by frying in shortening lol.....I was like, "this is gonna take a whole container or two!" This video explains it. (She was from Countcreek Kentucky so i knowit was a southernway)
Look at that! I’m salivating! This is the best way to fry chicken! I grew up eating chicken made this way. This meal is fit for a King and Queen! Yummy 😋
Love this couple and all their recipes ,I fail at frying chicken all the time especially when I add flour ,thank you for sharing your recipe I’m making this recipe tomorrow.🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤👍🇵🇷.
I'm a born and raised North Mississippi boy. My Mama always cooked chicken this way. I can just smell it now...cooking on a Sunday morning....in her iron skillet. Those were the good ole days for sure.
My mom made fried chicken just like this and we’d have it for picnics. Those were my very favorite way to eat chicken. I miss mommas fried chicken. I loved the legs.
Looks delicious!! Even with oil you need to add more.. Julia Childs says lard makes everything taste better and it’s more healthy than vegetable oils! She is right!
My mom would make her chicken like this but my grandmother would use a big ole electric fry pan with shortening she made the best chicken n crust was so good n crunchy me n my cousin would fight for that crust that my grandma would put in a seperate plate for us lol Memories of mommie Cain's fried chicken fried okra & blackberry cobbler & apple fried hand pies
My mom used to use a deep fryer with a basket. She used mashed up corn flakes sometimes to coat the chicken. Boy I wish I had some now. It was the best ever. Since watching you I’m going to do it without the fryer cause who needs another appliance that doesn’t get used enough. Thanks. I can almost smell it. Best to you.
That is the prettiest chicken! My Grandfather and his siblings snuck and fried a chicken when their parents went to town. I imagine this is how they fried ,because I'm sure their mother wouldn't miss a little bit of lard but definitely a cup or two if deep frying. They feasted, disposed of all the evidence and acted as if nothing happened. Later on in the evening, my Grandfather told on everybody!
That’s how you’re supposed to fry chicken. Got to have mashed potatoes, biscuits and gravy too. Yum. You’re a real cooker. I never use a mixer … my family loves lumpy potatoes. 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
Looks just like what my grandma made for Sunday lunch. I can’t even remember the last time I made fried chicken. Something tells me I need to revisit it….😉😉…..❤️-Brenda
Yum! This is mostly like my mother cooked except no egg just salt and pepper and flour! Love fried chicken. My Dad had a big double chicken house. We always had eggs and chicken to feed the family and yes I had to help to put up chicken for the freezer! Those were the days! 😄😍
Thanks for showing us that you don't need a half skillet full of grease Tammy! I would've used 2x that amount and not use a lid. Never heard of covering it; would've thought it would make it greasy n soggy! Love your way. Thanks again!
We would like to say how much I appreciated this video. For the 1st time in my 57 years have I been able to make an old fashion fried chicken which turned out perfect. On top of that, for once I didn't have to buy the gravy mix for a perfect gravy which passed the hubby test. I am so grateful to you! Just a wonderful feeling. ❤❤❤
My mom only fried chicken maybe twice in my whole childhood and she bought pieces already cut up because she never cut up a whole chicken. My mother-in-law raised 400 chickens every year that she cooked for her family. When I married my husband my bonus was my mother-in-law.
Hi Tammy and Chris. Another scorcher here in Texas. Can’t wait to get home to cooler temps! This is a wonderful recipe I can’t wait to make it. Thank you for this great video? Have a wonderful Sunday and week!
Well my granny was alive we used to go down to the country to see her she made the best chicken ever she would go to the chicken coop she'd kill her own chicken clean it soaking buttermilk battered up and fry it it was so crispy better than any chicken chain out here better than KFC better than Church's Chicken better than any chicken chain out here my mom and my granny and my dad were the best on frying chicken the best we're still here to fry me some gold and chicken I can fry myself and it turns out really good I learned a few secrets throughout the years after my mom and dad and Granny passed to heaven they would be proud of me
Thank you ...........I was able to find a cast iron skillet like yours at a yard sale. Paid $5.00. Your recipe for your granny's old f fashioned Southern chicken sure was finger licking GOOD! THANK YOU AGAIN!
My grandma made the best fried chicken. Every birthday that was my requested meal...grandma Wilson's fried chicken. She put flour, salt and pepper in a paper bag, added the chicken and fried in crisco in a deeo cast iron skillet. So crispy and juicy. When I need a cover for a skillet that doesn't have one, I use a metal pizza pan. Works perfect!
My mother always fried her chicken this way in a dutch oven and then coveted it and put it in the oven for about a half hour. I've looked for a recipe like this for years. My grandmother would tell my mother it was smothered chicken but those recipes are different. This is my Mana's fried chicken and even if it's covered it still comes out crisp but moist inside.
Oh my this looks scrumptious, I don’t mind cutting up a chicken into pieces BUT if I had to kill it myself I reckon I’d darn well starve to death as I’m sure I couldn’t do it. I can’t get Crisco shortening here in Australia but I found that the blocks of super-fry are a great substitute & possibly similar to yours. Thank you Tammy & Chris for this ‘winner winner chicken dinner’ & that’s a rather nifty turning hook too.
I made the whole meal tonight! It was soooo good! And, you are so right, those green beans were amazing! I think I liked them the best! Thank goodness I have leftovers! Everyone, listen up…MAKE TAMMY’S GREEN BEANS!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🥰🥰 Truly amazing!
When I was 19, we went to Arkansas to visit my Grandma Long. I was proud that I was learning to cook. I wanted to surprise Grandma that I had learned how to fry chicken. I wanted to show her i could make fried chicken. She gave me a full half hour, came into the kitchen. Asked me who taught me to make fried chicken. She basically pushed me aside and said she would make dinner . I didn't have. The heart to tell her that her daughter was the one who taught me to cook.😂😂😂😂😂
I'm 67 now but I can remember my Mom's Mom Grany Oma Looney when I was about 5 yrs old. When I saw my Grany sweet talk a hen to lay it's down on a chopping block. A mange this wack went the hatchet then the hen went a jumping around the yard the dogs running around barking. When the hen stopped the feathers went a flying. That to this day was the best chicken I have EVER had.
Tammy. My Mama taught us to clean a chicken and cut it up before we cooked it. When trained as a young person to do this, it becomes second nature,. Chicken tastes so much better when one buys a "whole" chicken as opposed to a "Cut-up" one.
Thank you Tammy & Chris for sharing this recipe. I have tried many fried chicken recipes, didn't like any of them. Trying this one soon! My Mom is the same way about pork. Ate so much of it growing up she hates it now.
I get my fried chicken right thru the drive thru at Popeyes 🤣🤣lmbo. Miss Tammy I’ve never done this before. I’m too chicken. But yours is delicious 😋 I love you Miss Tammy. Love you too Chris ❤️❤️
I can remember my Mom always used the cheaper brand of solid grease(is what we called it) my Grammy used lard if she had it and Crisco. Both were delicious and goodness it would be 3 families most times and one chicken would do all of us.🤷♀️
Tammy can you believe I've never made fried chicken...I'm going to order me one of your lids and cook me some of Granny's fried Chicken...I'll tell you how I do.
I remember living in Birmingham AL as a little girl I saw a wild chicken running through my grandmama's house and the next time I saw that chicken which was around supper time it was on my plate sitting next to some rice gravy and biscuits! That poor chicken but it sho was delicious 😂
Looks good. I use lard for my frying and pie crust making. I see fried chicken thighs in my future. Tammy, where did you get that fabulous dinnerware from? I just checked out your store but didn't see them😔 I plan on ordering that green bean pot next week.
I think most people struggle with it unless they fry it often. It takes practice. The only people I know that fry it really well are people who fry it all the time. So good!!
Tammy that chicken looked just like my mama’s . I don’t like to fry chicken but I think it’s time to fry some as I think I could smell that wonderful chicken. I’m 71 and I guess I’ve gotten lazy.
I grew up eating pan fried chicken cooked in Crisco. We also used lard at times. Mom sure knew how to cook. I love fried chicken but it’s so messy. I also know how to cut up my own chicken and do so but my daughter won’t even touch it and neither will my granddaughter.
🤣🤣🤣
Amazing story!!!
Aww, my momma’s name was Ruthie, Ruthie Mae. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You are a fabulous comfort cook! I’m learning so much from you!
That’s a cruel way to kill a chicken. You’re slit the neck and hang chicken up do so the blood can drain . You’re also supposed to say a prayer before slathering and animals. Only hillbilly are cruelty to animals.

As far as I know those after church Sunday dinners are now just a wonderful memory. We are lucky to have any family meals TOGETHER these days
Now you KNOW you need some of your soft and FLUFFY biscuits with that fried chicken! YUM! ☺ And fille it with lots of BUTTER and HONEY!
Love ya!
My momma: salt & pepper in the flour, add to paper bag, add chicken & shake. Add to melted manteca/Crisco, fry uncovered until done & enjoy
That's how my mom and both mamaws fried chicken!! And now I fry it that way too! And that chicken gravy is so good over some buttermilk biscuits!! Deep fried??? Pressure cooked KFC I've heard of, but I've always thought this was the only and best way!
KFC who? Word on the street is those are not real chickens they are aliens!😂
Haven't seen you in a while and have missed you & Chris. Your chicken looks so good! I'm 89 years old and still live to cook! Love watching you!
That looks delicious, never been able to fry good chicken but after watching your video I’m going to give it another try! Thank you 💞
Me too Rita!!!

I did cauliflower like you do okra with white Lily flour and buttermilk(milk) in the air fryer. Omg. Delicious

My mother’s maiden name was Nichols. She was from Ozark, Ar. She was an incredible woman.
I'm with Chris. This is my favorite meal. I just got back from the grocery store and now I want to run back and buy a chicken. Thanks for this!
Tammy and Chris, my grandma cooked her chicken in shortening too! Always delicious! Thanks 🍗

Nothing like tried and true recipes from our Mamas and granny’s. ♥️♥️

My mom made the best fried chicken, she would cook two big iron skillets full on Sunday. She cooked it just like you did. ❤️So Delicious 😋
Chicken fried in a cast iron skillet is just the best ever.

My mom made fried chicken just like this and we’d have it for picnics. Those were my very favorite way to eat chicken. I miss mommas fried chicken. I loved the legs.
Mother and Mammaw would be so pleased you shared the old right way!! You rock.
What a nice job you did cutting up that chicken, I love Rada, kids used to sell it for school, wish they still did. That chicken looks delicious.
Who else is now craving this fried chicken? 🙃 I will be cooking this up soon.
That's the way my family fries chicken.& I love it that way. Look's Awesome😁
Yum! This is mostly like my mother cooked except no egg just salt and pepper and flour! Love fried chicken. My Dad had a big double chicken house. We always had eggs and chicken to feed the family and yes I had to help to put up chicken for the freezer! Those were the days! 😄😍

Chris, when you’re the taste tester and you get something delicious you should do a happy dance!! It looks so so good!!

I'm with Chris that is My all time favorite meal. The only thing I would add is a Dinner Roll.
Thanks for Sharing. Take Care and God Bless.
Love it Tammy!! My mom made that gravy and chicken just like you did! Thank you!--Tressa Daigle

It's so good!

You know, for a bird that can’t fly and has to walk everywhere it goes, I’m surprised the thigh is the fattiest part of a chicken.
I loved my grandma’s fried chicken and this looks just like it ! Thanks Tammy and Chris. 💕
That chicken looks perfect, good job.
My mother always fried her chicken this way in a dutch oven and then coveted it and put it in the oven for about a half hour. I've looked for a recipe like this for years. Thank you Tammy & Chris for this ‘winner winner chicken dinner’ & that’s a rather nifty turning hook too.
I used to use aluminum foil because I didn’t have a lid that fit my pan. Probably not the best but it seemed to work okay. Love this channel! 💖🥰🌺🌸
So much inspiration from just one channel!
This is exactly the way to cook chicken that I've been searching for!! Thank you so much!!!
My grand Mom made chicken just like this...😊😋
Thanks you for this! It helps watching it being done. I have learned so much from you.

That's how I've always fried my chicken, high brown and then cover to cook through. Best chicken ever!!!😋
Everything looks delish except the white gravy. We always had brown gravy in Alabama. Enjoyed your show.
Just finished eating this fried chicken. Wow! Looked just like hers. Best I’ve ever cooked!
Fantastic!
Thank you Tammy & Chris for sharing this recipe. I have tried many fried chicken recipes, didn't like any of them. Trying this one soon!
My Mom is the same way about pork. Ate so much of it growing up she hates it now.
This is the authentic way of making good old fried chicken...nothing better! Yum🍗🍗🍗
I get my fried chicken right thru the drive thru at Popeyes 🤣🤣lmbo. Miss Tammy I’ve never done this before. I’m too chicken. But yours is delicious 😋 I love you Miss Tammy. Love you too Chris ❤️❤️
That is the way my Mom and I make fried chicken. My Mom always used Crisco for frying. Thank you Tammy and Chris!
Please do
Oh fried chicken is my favorite! Haven’t had any in years! Brought tears to my eyes! Gr beans and mashed taters … love it!
I remember living in Birmingham AL as a little girl I saw a wild chicken running through my grandmama's house and the next time I saw that chicken which was around supper time it was on my plate sitting next to some rice gravy and biscuits! That poor chicken but it sho was delicious 😂
Lord have mercy 😋😂😂looks so delicious
Looks good. I use lard for my frying and pie crust making. I see fried chicken thighs in my future. Tammy, where did you get that fabulous dinnerware from? I just checked out your store but didn't see them😔 I plan on ordering that green bean pot next week.
They are no longer made
I fry my chicken the same way, and my grandma had a restaurant when I was young, and I learned how from her. 🙋
Did your mom ever use the potato water in her gravy? It is so good that way.
No she did not
ThanksTammy and Chris This is a favorite alsolike it with peas… but I do love good half runners cooked with fatback
My Mama used lard.and that.fried chicken was soooo.delicious.
That looks so good. I'll be 67 next month, I've been cooking most of my life, but I still struggle with frying chicken.
I think most people struggle with it unless they fry it often. It takes practice. The only people I know that fry it really well are people who fry it all the time. So good!!
Love your recipes and the way you explain them.
Tammy that chicken looked just like my mama’s . I don’t like to fry chicken but I think it’s time to fry some as I think I could smell that wonderful chicken. I’m 71 and I guess I’ve gotten lazy.
Thank you for showing me how to fry chicken I was never good at it, lol
This is wonderful! Bless you and your lovely recipes. Got some drumsticks and making for supper today!💝
Always cook mine like that, except once browned I turn down to low and cook about 30 min. So good.
I grew up eating pan fried chicken cooked in Crisco. We also used lard at times. Mom sure knew how to cook. I love fried chicken but it’s so messy. I also know how to cut up my own chicken and do so but my daughter won’t even touch it and neither will my granddaughter.
