Me too! But I don't like the huge pieces like they sell today. When I was growing up you never saw chicken like that in the grocery store and the flavor was so much better! I had a butcher who showed me how to cut up chicken years ago and once you learn it's so easy. Thanks for showing these young people how to do it!
I remember riding my bicycle through our neighborhood with the aroma of chicken frying in any one of the homes. The aroma of my youth, wonderful memories!
Grandma always put a pat of butter on each piece towards the end. She always fried chicken in a cast iron pan. Thanks for taking me back. She's in heaven now and I haven't had great fried chicken since 1986.
Owe wow wow wow. Your chicken probably blows my aways big time lol. You have that granny touch that only love and time brings to food. May God Bless you and thank you so much for sharing and watching. Very honored to have you with us Bessie.
I fry my chicken the same way that you do. My mother (RIP) taught me and my six siblings how to cut up, clean and fry the chicken. Thank you for sharing.
We've made everything more complicated. We all grew up eating chicken fried this way. Even BBQing... I have 3 different grills with diffuser plates, thermometers and all kinds of accessories... My parents never used none that stuff and the BBQ came out great.
I'm with you brother. My friend was on his smoker with like ten wires hanging in and out of it. I asked him if the thing was on life support or what lol. If I have to hook up all that crap to cook a meal I'm done.
Believe it or not, I am 70 and have never fried chicken. I will follow your video to the T. And get back to you. This was so inspiring ❤ Extremely impressive presentation.
You are very humble and a skilled chef! You make it look easy. Well follow up to my comment.... My chicken was an EPIC FAILURE! The only variation to your process was not buying a whole chicken. They are over $20 here and I refused to do it. My chicken parts I will not even call it fried chicken. They were soggy and terrible! You rock though!
I can believe it. It's been at least 25 years since I've fried chicken. I stopped because I either burned it or undercooked it. I'm happy to have come across this video. I'll give it a try.
Our Friday night dinner at my parents in Brooklyn NYC in the Brown stone 3 story walk up. Oh the smell was Heaven. This meal you made was spot on was was on our table every Friday night at 6:00 PM I still have all my Mom's cast Iron skillets. and use them all.Yes they are from her home down in Augusta Georgia. 👍✌
I was transported to that Brownstone on a Friday night in the past. Thanks for sharing. Hold on to those skillets. Wish that I had one of my grandmother’s.
Cast iron, there is no equal. I have a skillet that's been in my family since the 30's i could loose everything else but that damn pan. Cheers mate, much love from Oregon.
My grandmother is from Birmingham, Alabama and my mom is from Washington, DC. They both had their own way how to fry chicken. Cast Iron Skillet were their best pan to fry anything. My grandmother cook just like don't need extra stuff to fry chicken old school folks. I'm a 85 baby. I grew up in the 90s. Sunday meals were best at grandmother house. sadly I loss my grandmother the day after Thanksgiving back 2016. My mom is living in a nursing home with stage 2 dementia. I'm 38 years old I cook just like my heroes. I do add some short cuts in the mix. You just brought me to my childhood. Blues and cold Pepsi in my grandmother kitchen. My mom kitchen was old school songs from the 70s-80s soul and R/B with rum and coke mix in her cup.
I can remember my Mamaw had two kinds of Sunday dinner after church. One was the kind where a roast beef and potatoes and carrots had been low cooking all morning while we sat in church, stomachs grumbling. This meal was generally ready a half hour after we got back. But the other meal, the one we looked forward to was skillet fried chicken which took some time, as you demonstrate. I remember hearing the sound and smell of that chicken frying, wanting to eat, but knowing the wait was worth it. I would give anything to eat another drumstick from that skillet, but I reckon you have put it back on me to make it myself. Maybe doing so will inspire memories in my daughter similar to my own. And maybe it won’t take her as long to get started as me. Thank you for the reminder. Can’t seem to find the chicken recipe link but I reckon I can transcribe it.
I just found this gentleman cooking. I live in the UK, and we can learn much about your culture by watching programmes like these. Why hasn't he got his own TV show?
I plan to go buy two chickens today and fry them up with your recipe! How delicious looking, I am licking my lips already and so is the dog! Thank You, I am 66 and never knew what you taught me today.
When I saw you using a fork and not tongs to turn the chicken, it reminded of how my father cooks chicken. All he uses is salt and pepper and his cast iron skillet chicken has the best flavor I’ve ever tasted.. and it’s even better the second day or cold‼️
Since moving to Georgia 9 yrs ago I've wanted to learn from some real southern cooks. Last year was my biscuit adventure, now I lucked out and found your technique for fried chicken! Thanks for the knowledge 😍
Not only did it look delicious but the sound of the crunch! The beans reminded me of the beans my grandmother made when I stayed with her in Texas. Sometimes we just had the beans with some cornbread! I am looking forward to trying this recipe! Thanks! ❤️ 👍
Thank you for sharing your secret. I am from Texas, my mother was from Tennessee and dad, Georgia. I truly can’t not tell you how mama seasoned her chicken. I do know I have always buttermilked mine. The issue I always have is the outside is crisp while the meat to the bone is not cooked enough. I am going to use your recipe. I love the idea of using mustard as I use that in my meatloaf. Thanks for sharing. Yes, as I scanned the comments I agree your voice and instructions are very professional. Enjoy, Brother.
Gramma did this every Sunday for dinner! Difference being she put onions in to fry with the chicken! Mmmmm was so good. Learnt her method and taught my 3 girls the same! Hopefully their hubbys benefit from it all too!
Excellent cooking, excellent commentary and excellent attitude sir. Your sharing is caring way of thinking is what is missing in the world today. People should pay attention to this simple fact. 😎👍
My great aunt Ethelyn (called her Leen) fried chicken this way. Pan was a bit smaller but still cast iron. I do not have the patience to stand there and tend frying chicken. I love it but have no current experience. I'm willing to try this now that I am retired!! It was soooo good.
I love the look of this chicken. It was in the skillet long enough to really reduce the amount of fat in the pieces. And actually the skillet itself is pretty under-rated tool in the kitchen these days. It's kind of old fashioned. BUT it is absolutely the best for even frying. It takes a bit longer but the results speak for themselves.
I am a 50's baby from the south and my mom used to cut up and prepare chicken the same way. She would fry it in a large cast iron skillet with some lard back then and you could smell that chicken cooking all over the neighborhood. OMG finger licking good. I am so happy to see that you fry chicken the old fashioned way the same as i do. Thank you. From milwaukee
I love your hat! My mom taught me how to cut up a chicken sixty years ago but I’ve sort of forgotten. Can’t wait to try this. My auntie made the best fried chicken too.
Had to subscribe after seeing this! I’m 64, this is the way my grandmother did it. She would let us pick the chicken in the yard, she would catch and it was on!
Your fried chicken recipe is something that I have never seen before. I seen it with the buttermilk recipe, milk recipe, and plenty of salt . I can't wait to try your recipe. I'll be leaving you a comment on how well it came out and how well it taste periods❤ I love the way you prepare your chicken I can't wait to try it as soon as possible.
OK, I see "Skilet fried chicken" I think ok, who dosen't love a good Sunday dinner? Next, I see 30.00+ min?. Long video ..BUT....I FOUND MYSELF glued to the screen...WOW! BTY your wife is an outstanding camera operator. Slow steady stable hand. Many channels lose and "Push" valuable footage when they shake and rush the camera. You guys got it solid! Cheers my friends. Mac
Knowledge is too be shared. Great advice. Was raised the same way. I'm 65. Dad born 1904. Mom born 1918. I was born 1959 and youngest of 5. Old school raised which was the best way. Simple and to the point. Grest video and channel. God bless you and your family.
Thank-you..!! Just made this reciepie, I didnt have whole chicken, so I cut up chicken breasts into strips and made them into fried chicken fingers, and they were awesome! Thanks for sharing. My grandmother always use to make fresh bread from scratch, wish we had saved her recepie. Appreciate your time, from Texas.
I never saw mustard in fried chicken, but so many little tips and things y’all said made so much sense and answered so many questions I’ve had for decades! Holding the pieces over other chicken so there’s no splash! Awesome! How to cut up a chicken, why no salt in your rub, how much oil, all kinds of good info. Thanks so much!
I’m from Canada and that’s how my mom made fried chicken. I never did learn from her exactly what she did but from what I remember as a kid, it was exactly what you did. Except she used only salt and pepper. Thanks for the video. I think I’m going to cook some up tomorrow. Cheers.
I'm doing your recipe tonight. I followed all your instruction. I got my fingers crossed for the best chicken ever. Thank you so much. I'll report back later blessings.
Here for the first time and once I saw that mustard...and the black iron frying pan and those beans😂😂❤😂Oh I knew I was subscribing. This is how I remember fried chicken and a dinner plate when I was growing up in the 70s. NO FUSS NO ...A MUST.❤❤❤❤Nice job and You have the best voice !!
Awww thank you and welcome so good to have the 70's children in the house bringing back the good old days. We have to keep the traditions so i hope this video helps just that. Please stick around and thank you for sharing your memories.
@@bbqsouthernstyleYour welcome.😊 Oh I forgot to mention I know I have that same knife. 😂😂😂I'm for certain I do. I think I purchased mine from a farmers market here in NJ. Lastly, you made cutting that chicken look easy.😂😂 Its honestly all in the knife. 12bucks that is 😂😂👍😉🥰Loved it. Clean Presentation Perfect!
So nice to see this. It's fried CHICKEN, damn it. Not some fried fancy mixture of flour, and spices, and buttermilk, and double dipping, and special incantations with (oh yeah, almost forgot about it) some chicken inside. Thank you so much.
Lol Thank you my friend, my thoughts exactly. Thank you for the very astute observation and for and of course for watching! So glad to have you with us.
I fry my chicken just about the same but haven't tried mustard, interesting so next time I'll try that. I'm glad you mentioned don't poke the chicken while frying. I learned from my grandmother and mom to cook because they both were excellent cooks, my grandmother was a cook for the Watson family when Tom was a baby, she knew all the tricks! Only thing I need is gravy made from that oil with all the bits! Nice job man! Cast iron is the best!
Yes cast iron is the best i have my mothers big black skillets they are older then me but i keep them in good shape wow her fried chicken was the best she would cut hers up wash season it and let it sit over night in the frig cook it in her cast iron skillets with lids over them all my cousin would come to our house for her fried chicken she would cook so much chicken they could take some home i do mines the same way she did only different i have to buy wings and breast the other parts would go to waste
This is the one thing I wish I had paid attention to before my momma past on. Her fried chicken was simple, just like you show in this video. I still cannot mimic her fried chicken. I believe it was her particular technique that is missing, but yours is by far the closest I can come to momma's. Thank you so much and I really enjoy ALL of your videos.
You can always tell when a person cooks w love in ❤..... The taste n healthy meal.... Here's an opportunity to see all that poetry in motion..... I respect that.... as me always had a healthy appetite growing up. Now, in 70s I feel fit, but weigh-in bout 180. Also appreciate your encouragement to use regular, chicken; as opposed to store-bought if possible.... don't wanna get away from tradition bringing back treasured memories of down home......... thank you young sir!
I think I'll try your approach with only one change. To me, salt is a must. I already use the same other seasonings you use. And I also like prepping and seasoning the chicken, then letting it absorb the flavor for a while in the fridge. The crust on your chicken looks appetizing. The way you cut your pieces makes perfect sense. And I especially like the way you honor and remember your parents, grandparents, and family in your cooking, and how you carry on with and share their ways of cooking for their loved ones. The world needs much more of this and other ways of showing love and care within the family. Great job! Great video!
Loved your video. Exactly the way my dear mother (may she RIP) would fry chicken. I mean she fried the best! Used mustard, not Buttermilk! She didn’t have time for that!😂Cast iron skillet! That’s the way to do it. Tomorrow, I’m going to fry me some chicken, and thank you so much! I’m a new subscriber. Blessings a plenty!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Awesome sauce...I have been doing this for umpteen years...I love the smell it gives off from shallow pan frying as opposed to just a grease smell from deep frying. ❤😊
Peace and Greetings, my beloved brother! I pray that all is going well with you and that you are feeling vibrant, on top of your game. I extend gratitude, humbly and kindly thank you for all that you share, much appreciated.🙏🏾🙏🏾The seasonings, the rub, the technique and tips, are priceless and certainly worth watching closely, attentively listening by the voice, lol - I've always mentioned this is a major part of what keeps the audience engaged and on the edge of their seats, amongst the prepping, seasoning, cooking, garnishing, the collaboration of it all. Great work bro! I extend blessings to you and your family, looking forward to watching your most current videos and the videos in which I've missed.🔥🔥🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾🔥🔥✋🏾
What a great show..perfect..love the host and his presentation..just bought a chicken..have the skillet..now I have the know how and technique..thank you brudda
U just Keep On Rocking! Always Impressive, and Always make me Happy to watch U Cook. Reminds me of my Mother, so Succulent. Everyone wanted to be at Sunday Dinner. OMG what a Sight. She really enjoyed Cooking for Family and Friends. Thank U so much for sharing, I Can Hardly wait to see U in the Wind! Rock On!
Awww thank you! Sounds like it was a great time with lots of fond memories. I hope you make this and keep the Sunday dinners alive. Thank you for watching and sharing.
Gold Jerry. GOLD!!! I can probably count the number of times my mama fried chicken for me on 1 and 1/2 hands because it was a lot of work. BUT, she had it down pat! No herbs and spices beyond salt and pepper. She just had that talent. She was usually working to be able to buy what food we had and it was mostly that 70’s prepackaged fair. Chef Boy Arde, Kraft, etc etc. Different time. Luckily we have artisans like you keeping the art alive. I don’t think I’d ever be able to fry a chicken to perfection like this. My mind wouldn’t allow it.
Thank you for Sharing. Your recipe is old school from the Elders🙏🏽 & the best. No buttermilk for me either My Mother didn't use that & now I'm lactose intolerant 😐. & Her Fried Chicken was Fabulous 😋😋, as I know your's is too!, 👌🏽. Bless your ❤, Sharing is Caring. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Your plating up is quite good. I don’t see it as often, even among the top chefs, and it makes such a difference. Good taste begins with what the eye sees. I learned to pan fry chicken this way from my Dad who was a chef, and I still have all the cast iron pans. I’m glad I came across you. Thanks.
Welcome, and thank you. You are correct, you don't see it as often. I think it's just a new day and age and its rush rush rush. When you do see it, chefs want to plate up with microscopic food with tweezers smh. lol
God bless those precious 60, 70, 80, and 90 year Olds!
Amen to that!!!!!!
Thank you from this 72 year old 50's baby. Much appreciate it and God bless you as well.
That looks delicious! That's beautiful fried chicken. I'm going to try the mustard instead of salt

Now that’s how fry chicken.. it even has that old school look to it I’m a 70’s baby I know good food
Lol Right! thank you.
At 68 I'm close to you. Mom grew up on a farm and fried chicken great. She went to a one room school house.
Yes indeed. I'm a 60s baby brought up in the 70s, the best time in my life. Good food for real.

BTY your wife is an outstanding camera operator. Slow steady stable hand.
Many channels lose and "Push" valuable footage when they shake and rush the camera. You guys got it solid!
Cheers my friends.
Mac
Thank you! But it's a camera man lol. Great friends that work well together thank you Jesus.
Knowledge is too be shared. Great advice. Was raised the same way. I'm 65. Dad born 1904. Mom born 1918. I was born 1959 and youngest of 5. Old school raised which was the best way. Simple and to the point. Grest video and channel. God bless you and your family.
Thank you so much. We can never forget our past right!
Thank you. It's never to late to learn how to bake.
Looks and sounds outstanding!! Great simple recipe that we can all follow. Thank you sir!!
Thanks for watching and thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Our pleasure to help.
He said that there's a lot of salt in the mustard.
I’m from Canada and that’s how my mom made fried chicken. I never did learn from her exactly what she did but from what I remember as a kid, it was exactly what you did. Except she used only salt and pepper. Thanks for the video. I think I’m going to cook some up tomorrow. Cheers.
That is awesome! have a great meal. Let me know how it was.
I’m an 80’s baby raised on a farm by my grandparents and that’s how I learned to cut up, clean and fry chicken.
Nice!!!
I'm doing your recipe tonight. I followed all your instruction. I got my fingers crossed for the best chicken ever. Thank you so much. I'll report back later blessings.
Roger that! please do. Happy cook.
Really enjoy your videos! Much love and respect from baltimore
Thank you Baltimore.!
Lol thank you and I still have all my fingers.
I grew up eating fried chicken made just like this.
Nice!
This is how my grandma and my mama fried chicken, and so do I!
Nice!
Classic dish, one of my favorites for sure. Good tips
Mine too! Thank you sir.
Thank you right on brother!
Nothing beats moms, but I think with your fine tuning you got this one.
Love the way you do the wings. That had to be the way the old Church's chicken did it, was my favorite piece from them!
Thanks so much
You can always tell when a person cooks w love in ❤.....
Thank you! very much appreciated.
Chicken looks great it's the ole time fried chicken the way it used to be!! Agreed great voice & enunciation
Wow thank you. Very much appreciated.
My grandmother nor my mother ever used buttermilk as part of their fantastic Southern fried chicken recipe.
Right! lol
Looks amazing. Thumbs-up 👍
Thank you hope you give it a try.
Thank you! Blessing to you.
This video showed up in my list of suggested videos this morning. I will be watching more of your channel!
Awesome! Thank you! And welcome.
Any time and Welcome great to have you with us!
Awesome sauce...I have been doing this for umpteen years...I love the smell it gives off from shallow pan frying as opposed to just a grease smell from deep frying. ❤😊
Right!
Thank you so much good to see you back and Blessed.

Thank you. I think you got this. Start small with a cut up chicken.
Ain't nothing better than fried chicken. You make it look easy,!
Amen to that! Thank you.
Amen to that! thank you.
I appreciate your sharing; enjoy watching and learning. Thanks and God Bless.
You are very welcome! Pleasure is all mine.
Nicely explained and you really know how to cook in a cast iron skillet ! Looks amazing. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
Thank you! Very much appreciated.
You are so welcome, thank you for sharing and watching! Blessings too you.
The man sure knows how to cook and I've never seen this recipe but I'm definitely going to try it
Lol than you I try my best!
My mouth is watering looking at that beautiful meal you made, thank you for sharing with us .
You are so welcome! Thanks for sharing and watching.
Grandma is amazing and your home is so beautiful. 😊❤
Thank you so much! and thank you for watching.
I love the old ways of cooking. I use this method good home cooked in my home when cooking my meals. From Georgia
I didn't know there was any other way lol. The new way would be the microwave, I think ?
@@bbqsouthernstyle 🤣 I cut some fresh corn for the iron skillet! I look forward to more of your videos!
Very nice brother that's what's on for dinner tonight thank you
Hope you enjoy thank you!
When you do see it, chefs want to plate up with microscopic food with tweezers smh. lol
Great Voice. Reminds me of Charlie Pride!
LOl thank you !
Thank you for the simple step by step directions.
Looks fabulous!
If my sons come for dinner, I might make this over the weekend.
😊
Nice! have a great meal you guys.
