Your videos are great. I want to get an XJ for my first car and slowly build it for mild trails and maybe some rocks. Your vids are definitely helpful to me and and all beginners. KEEP JEEPIN!
I’m one of those unlucky Jeep owners that has the fuel filter inside the fuel tank. At least the oil filter isn’t inside the oil pan. So the engineers heads were only 1/2 up their asses. How stupid that you have to drop the entire fuel tank to change a filter.
Thanks Matt. Getting ready to do this on grandson's Cherokee, and this helped. Definitely want to have the new one ready to plug in before starting to avoid fuel leakage. Showing how to relieve fuel pressure helped too.
A wide mouth funnel with a foot of small diameter hose attached (directed into a tall jug or small gasoline can makes catching that fuel a bit easier. Kind of awkward trying to hold up a bigger pan etc. Works for me! Fantastic demo Matt! 👌
Couldnt you clamp off the fuel lines before removing them?? or is the gas coming from the old filter? In my VW Beetle many years ago all I had to do was clamp off the fuel lines 👍 I never got a drop of gas on me.
I remember the first XJ I owned, within a day the fuel pump went out so i climbed under dreading dropping the tank and saw the pump and filter staring at me. lol that was the day i realized i never wanted to drive anything else, and its been one easy fix after another since (Just Empty Every Pocket, right?).
I've been scrolling through you videos and I'm really impressed. have you guys ever done a video on replacing the fuel injectors, and loading them into the fuel rail?
BleepinJeep what kinda of issues could you notice if your pump or filter was going bad?! My Jeep stalls out for no reason and while it’s idling it has a miner sputter you can barely feel and hear.
Nice video, have to change this on my 01 Cherokee. Every time a fuel pump goes out on any of my vehicles its always during the winter. Today it got up to 30f and I don't have a garage to work in!
I love Bleepin jeep for anything I need on my 96XJ. Thank you so much buddy. You should help me with my spark plug wires motor mounts transmission mount and now with this fuel filter.👍🏻👍🏻
just to clear some issues up 97 and up cherokees have the fuel filter built right into the fuel pump module and have no choice but to replace the whole assembly meaning yep you guessed it drop the tank and pray you dont have alot of gas lol once its out take the old one out drain the gas and take the vent hose off and its clip and then use a little bit of oil to lube up the gasket so its easier to put in as it slides in and doesnt roll the gasket inside and heres the tricky part unless its just mine just keep screwing the lock ring it feels like its going on sideways and all sorts of binding but just keep screwing and tap it with a hammer and eventually itll pop on correctly i couldnt find an easier way but once its all together pop your vent hose and clips on pop it all back in and plug everything and reconnect everything and enjoy your new pump for more info check out 97 and up fuel pump videos on youtube there is one where i used and made life so much easier mines just a quick guide
oh also if your fuel pump still works remove the shrader valve from the check port on the fuel rail and jump the relay with a paper clip and get as much gas as you can out trust me it helps mine was shot and took 3 hours to drain but i had time lol so i focused on getting the bolts and everything prepped to be removed once the gas is out and then remove the straps (which WILL rust and be a pita to remove so dont be shocked if you break them) then remove the shield on the fill neck and vent pipes then the connector push the little red tab and pop it off along with the vent hose and fuel line (also be sure to relief the pressure with that check port as mentioned before) and pray to god gas doesnt spray into your face and eyes as it burns quite alot but if you do wash your face off and then after a few minutes of bitching and cursing that you hate every single thing possible that you see and come across and insult your cat low and behold the tank is ready to be removed
nice video matt. just a tip, maybe you could have started the engine, pull out the fuel pump fuse and let the car idles till it stalls. it would minimize the amount of spillage when you pull the old fuel filter out :)
Thanks for this...I recently purchased a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport that was in good condition. I have been performing some standard maintenance for a Jeep that is nearing two decades. I definitely want to put a new fuel filter on her and was not sure where it was. Thanks again for this very clear and concise video. I am now a subscriber as I see you have many great videos about the XJ.
Yup I got my 89 about 6months ago, guy who sold it to me said he maintained it, once I started digging into it I found out it was all a lie. It's been fun working on it, most of the work is easy and self explanatory, doing the file filter today.
I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee limited . Where is the insert to install a micro mechanic and do they work. I came across your channel very helpful but help still needed
Here in New Zealand a jeep filter is only twenty bucks. Must be after market. The tiny one for my Yamaha 950cc is $90 and 6 weeks delivery from Japan. I feel lucky working on the Cherokee today!
Thank you for all your Video's 🙏🏽 Has helped me through every step of putting my new engine in my Cherokee your knowledge is truly appreciated and will highly recommend your channel to all my friends
Hey Matt,Thanks for the clear instructions, clear video and advice!! I have a 92 Jeep XJ Limited and needs some TLC. She is a project jeep. I am changing some of the ignition parts (Cap, rotor, plugs and ignition coil. Have you done these on RUclips yet? I think I am clear on the "how to", but, would LOVE to have it at the ready. With this video (fuel filter) I can quickly and safely do it myself!!
I just replaced mine on Comanche the other. Day. Noticed the wiring harness was out of the holder clip. Since then my fuel gauge doesn't work??? WTF? Dandahermit?
Hi there, I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. The parts store tells me that this jeep doesn't have a fuel filter or its only inside of the tank. Clearly it does have an external filter. So am I calling the part by the wrong name?
Hey bro, i have a 1989 cherokee 4.0 limited. When im in first gear it sputters and dies, once im past first its fine. This is my first jeep and my daily driver. If u have any ideas let me know. Thanks man, love your chanel !!
super helpful, except my 10mm bolt is not coming out due to wear and warped size, any opinion on what i should use? already tried vice grips, and im assuming the bolt at the top is bolted to another sort of mount so that metal brace has something to latch on to?
hey there matt. youve helped me in the past and im hoping you can help now. right now the truck runs amazing but only when stopped and in park while idling for about 15 mins the truck stuggles and finally stalls out, i just replaced the battery and alternator at the same time thinking that would be the cure. unfortunatly no. so now im moving towards a fuel problem and going to start with the fuel filter. let me know what you think and as always thanks!!
This may be a dumb question but when you released fuel pressure, do we have to rebuild that pressure? If so, how do we do that. Great video btw thank you.
no, usually it'll just crank back up albeit after a few more seconds than normal. If it has trouble then you can certainly try bleeding the air through the shrader valve on the fuel rail.
I have a 96 zj I'm trying to change the filter but broke the plastic connector not just the white inner but the black outer also any ideas on how to fix it
Hey Matt, would this be a good time to drain old fuel from your tank, or is there a more effective way to do that? I have a 95 Cherokee that has been sitting for 7 years and plan on replacing the fuel filter but figured I'd drain the 7 year old gas out of it as well.
Thanks for the reply!! After watching your video on how to remove a gas tank from a Jeep Cherokee, that shouldn't be too difficult :) You do a great service man, thanks so much!
bleepinjeep 11 mpg. UPDATE. Thanx to these videos by bleepinjeep I did my own tune-up to my own Jeep. Keep in mind that I am not a mechanic, not even close. With the right tools I looked up on the internet I changed the spark plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires, air filter, oil filter, oil change, parts cost less than $90. Checker Auto Parts. I was Quoted 285 bux at a shop! Auto lite platinum plugs- about $3 each New cap- about $20 rotor- about $15 on the high side, can get one for only $6 plug wires- $30-$35 for a good set of Auto lite wires Plus having the Haynes Manual any particulars was cool. I have a 97 XJ but cannot find a fuel filter, some say 97 have it in the tank, some say it is smaller and in the front on older models, some say it is the same as this video, any feedback?
I've replaced my fuel module on my 99 XJ. Yes it is a PITA :) However it's been done for 2 years and its not had a problem since. Get a good brand like Bosch and you'll be fine.
Tip: use hose clamps on either side of the filter to stop the gas from coming out. And fuel eats latex gloves, keep a few sets spare when working with fuel.
what year is that Cherokee, I have a 1999 and AutoZone just told me that I don't have a filter anywhere only the strainer in the tank?? Is that accurate
Mine has a symbol when I start it, it's a 99. Shop beautiful tune-up, symbol still there. They thought AC compressor might be dragging, shop checked it and it's fine. I figured maybe fuel pump going out?? Swapped it, still have a stumble when I first start it once I put my foot on the gas a teeny bit it runs smooth. I'm stumped!!!
What symbol? Try cleaning your idle control valve located in your throttle body. 2-#20 torx screws. Get some good carb cleaner and clean all the carbon off of the valve being careful of the rubber O-ring. Also try adjusting your throttle valve cable/easy. Lots of vids on how to do that.
Not really sure where else to post this up. So, I drive a 2000 Jeep XJ and I'm having a couple problems, and no, it's not the cylinder head yet. There's a gasoline smell that enters the cab shortly after starting the vehicle, but goes away after driving for a while. I've had two of the fuel injectors replaced so far, and I'm not sure what the heck is going on. I'm pretty sure I also need to replaced the valve cover gasket which is easy enough to do. Any thoughts?
+Electric Blue I have the same problem. It's the gas tank vent tube and or the fill tube rubber degrading. Just need to replace those. Haven't been able to look what size the rubber tubing is but it's around 1"
I replaced my pump and filter 3 weka ago. The 3 neighbor guys laughed when I told them why I was under the XJ. They weren't laughing when an hour later it fired right up!!!
I have a 2001 Jeep XJ is there a solution to upgrade or change the Front seats on my XJ cant find seats and the frames crack all the time such garbage manufactures should have warranted them metal is weak. let me know if you have any ideas.
Mr. Magnificent that's probably the charcoal filter that filters fuel vapors from the breather hose. I have a 98 XJ Sport as well. There are sock filters on the pump in the tank, but there's also a fuel pressure regulator/filter at the top of the fuel pump on the exterior of the the tank.
Stupid question , when my tank gets below 1/4 of a tank , if I make a hard left ,the JEEP stalls ,well today it completely shut off, I managed to get home but now it wont start. In a 98 grand Cherokee is the filter and pump in the tank, it seems that there is probably crude in the tank and when it gets low the fuel sloshes away from the pickup, and or gets crud into the fuel filter , any ideas .
I have a '97 jeep cherokee and it stalled on me and says the tank is full when in reality it only had a few dollars worth when it happened. Could it be a clogged filter or something more serious?
Bleepinjeep, I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee with a new engine in it with 6,500 miles. I get 10 1/2 MPG. What can I do to get more MPG? I heard that changing the fuel Injectors with 4 holes would give me more MPG and could the transmission being causing the problem cause it shifts the gears a little late most of the time
Your videos are great. I want to get an XJ for my first car and slowly build it for mild trails and maybe some rocks. Your vids are definitely helpful to me and and all beginners. KEEP JEEPIN!
Note for those who are doing the job with a filter without an arrow. Small tube goes in towards engine. Big tube towards tank line. ❤️
I’m one of those unlucky Jeep owners that has the fuel filter inside the fuel tank.
At least the oil filter isn’t inside the oil pan. So the engineers heads were only 1/2 up their asses.
How stupid that you have to drop the entire fuel tank to change a filter.
Well shot, well lit and clear explanation of all of the steps needed. I wish all how-to videos were done this well. Thanks!
One of the very best videos I've seen.. Excellent coverage, skipping the BS, no annoying stupid music to listen to, Many Thanks MAN!
Thanks Matt. Getting ready to do this on grandson's Cherokee, and this helped. Definitely want to have the new one ready to plug in before starting to avoid fuel leakage. Showing how to relieve fuel pressure helped too.

Fantastic demo Matt! 👌
Using the new caps on your new filter to stop fuel flow on your old one. Just a suggestion.
Looks like the gas comes out too fast.
You're a goddamn genius.
@@ExaltedWarrior lol...i THINK ITS CALLED COMMON SENSE 😁
@@laragreene8328 Common sense isn't common...
@@ExaltedWarrior I know! 😉
Couldnt you clamp off the fuel lines before removing them?? or is the gas coming from the old filter? In my VW Beetle many years ago all I had to do was clamp off the fuel lines 👍 I never got a drop of gas on me.
Nicely done. I had a tough time trying to find my fuel filter. I was in the right area under the vehicle but not far enough underneath. Thank you.
Great video. It's amazing how many people don't keep a good clean fuel filter
Another brilliant video Bleepinjeep. Keep it up matt. You are a jeep lifesaver :-)
What brand fuel filter did you use? Just curious.
I've been scrolling through you videos and I'm really impressed. have you guys ever done a video on replacing the fuel injectors, and loading them into the fuel rail?
all your videos are extremely helpful, thank you!
did some research and it's the 97+ XJ fuel filter that is inside the tank. But it is designed to last the life of the pump. but still that is a PITA
Thanks Matt, nice and easy. Sorry your fuel filter had so much gas. Mine barely spilled any out. Thanks again, I'll be subscribing to your channel.
thanks man!
Yep it is, it's part of the Windrock aka Coal Creek OHV park.
BleepinJeep what kinda of issues could you notice if your pump or filter was going bad?! My Jeep stalls out for no reason and while it’s idling it has a miner sputter you can barely feel and hear.

yes, in the direction of fuel flow.
WOW 2013 Matt, you look like a kid still here. God I feel old now seeing this.

Any recommendations on trying to get the hoses off. I don’t want to go through the hassle of cutting them and trying to find the correct size new hose
Grip and twist with a pair of pliers to loosen them. After that, wiggle back and forth by hand while applying tension and they should slip off.

yes it is
So the hoses on mine are just a tad too small the slip over the pipes on the fuel filter..any tips to stretch out the rubber hosing?
Super simple and informative, thanks so much!
hey there matt. youve helped me in the past and im hoping you can help now. right now the truck runs amazing but only when stopped and in park while idling for about 15 mins the truck stuggles and finally stalls out, i just replaced the battery and alternator at the same time thinking that would be the cure. unfortunatly no. so now im moving towards a fuel problem and going to start with the fuel filter. let me know what you think and as always thanks!!
i have a 93 xj by the way
neversurrender15 Hard to say... could be a sensor, could be a fuel issue, I'm assuming its not overheating?
That is a very nice looking rig you've got there
Note for anyone with a 97 or newer your filter is inside the tank part of the pump assembly
What year is your Jeep XJ? I have a 98 and when I went to AutoZone they said that it's inside my gas tank with the pump 😩
This may be a dumb question but when you released fuel pressure, do we have to rebuild that pressure? If so, how do we do that. Great video btw thank you.
Just start the vehicle. as soon as you turn the ignition on. Pump comes on and pressurizes the fuel log.
do the fuel lines have to be bleed/burped to remove the air introduced into the lines during the filter replacement?
no, usually it'll just crank back up albeit after a few more seconds than normal. If it has trouble then you can certainly try bleeding the air through the shrader valve on the fuel rail.
Awesome thanks
This is a very nice channel....Hey where is is the gas filter on a 98 cherokee?...i think its in the tank
yep, it is.
After watching your video on how to remove a gas tank from a Jeep Cherokee, that shouldn't be too difficult :)
You do a great service man, thanks so much!
it has some sort of fuel filter in the tank that is suppose to last the life of the pump.
Second question. I have a 1998 Jeep GC Laredo. My gas mileage is horrible. Just bought it. Passed smog. Any tips on what to look for first?
bleepinjeep 11 mpg. UPDATE. Thanx to these videos by bleepinjeep I did my own tune-up to my own Jeep. Keep in mind that I am not a mechanic, not even close. I have a 97 XJ but cannot find a fuel filter, some say 97 have it in the tank, some say it is smaller and in the front on older models, some say it is the same as this video, any feedback?
I have the same issue with my 2000
I think only the Renix cherokee's had external fuel filters. The 91up XJ's have the fuel filter in the gas tank which makes it a PITA to replace lol.
94 Jeep cherokee sport. Video was great. Only trouble was sliding the new one into the hoses. Probably could have used a liitle vaseline. Thank you.
whenever I change my oil i rub the old oil on the rim and place the new one on. I assume same with this. (I needa do this haha).
use soap will not damage the rubber hose. rubber hoesses do not like engine oil.
Thanks Dude, just got my first Cherokee XJ, I always like to change the fuel filter when I get a new to me me vehcile.
i have a 98 GC bad fuel pump do you have a video for that?
I've replaced my fuel module on my 99 XJ. Yes it is a PITA :)
However it's been done for 2 years and its not had a problem since. Get a good brand like Bosch and you'll be fine.
Does a jeep gran Cherokee 2007 has a fuel filter or is it inside the fuel pump ?
Thanks!! Just picked up a ‘98 Cherokee 102k miles
Is the fuel filter in same location on 2000 xjs?
you didnt mention what year jeep you are working on
Tip: use hose clamps on either side of the filter to stop the gas from coming out. And fuel eats latex gloves, keep a few sets spare when working with fuel.
Awesome Videos ! Keep up the good work !! I have the same model/Style jeep as the one above !
Hey matt great videos i have 97 xj cant find the fuel fliter and no back up lights changed bubls PLEASE HELP! !!
Oh yeah, thanks for posting this video. This is what I'll be doing today after Napa gets here.
what year is that Cherokee, I have a 1999 and AutoZone just told me that I don't have a filter anywhere only the strainer in the tank?? Is that accurate
Edward Banegas that is correct. Newer 97+ cherokees have the filter/strainer in the tank.
What year is this Cherokee , cause my 94 does not have a Schrader valve in the fuel rail…
90

i have a 98 jeep cherokee sport and it looks like it has a case around it, is that still the fuel filter?
Chris Piche on later model xj's the fuel filter is in the tank and designed not to need changing.

Yes sir. Later year 4.0 have the fuel filter built into the fuel pump. I’ve heard it’s more tedious replacing that one. Good luck!
Bleepinjeep, I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee with a new engine in it with 6,500 miles. I get 10 1/2 MPG. What can I do to get more MPG? I heard that changing the fuel Injectors with 4 holes would give me more MPG and could the transmission being causing the problem cause it shifts the gears a little late most of the time
idk, do you have larger than stock tires, do you have the proper gear ratio? what type of gas are you using? is your kickdown cable adjusted properly?
I have stock tires on the jeep and I use regular unleaded.
Sounds like you need a tune up
2001 the fuel filter is in the gas tank, correct? I've never changed it and ive got 195K
