As a complete outsider to this game series, naming your games something like "KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX" is extremely confusing. Why the .5 after the numbers, why are there 2 numbers (1.5 + 2.5) and then what is the ReMIX of these two fractional numbers? I am beyond confused. Should have called it "Kingdom Hearts Remastered Collection 1" then "- Collection 2" , "-Collection 3", and so on or something.
It's very literal which I get would be confusing. The .5 signifies that the collection covers material that goes beyond just the single title and encompasses between 1 & 2, and 2 & 3. But, having one literally called 1.5 + 2.5 is a lot ngl lol They have tried to move away from it with the "Story so far" and "All in one" collection, but it may take a complete rebranding during the next phase lol. Remix is literally just the name they chose for the collection as opposed to just going with Remastered, Complete Edition, or HD collection. I assumed it was to play off 'Final Mix' being the naming for the complete versions of the older games. Final mix + Remaster = Remix.
Kingdom hearts should definitely be played in release order as the order the games where originally released allow you to get given questions and answers in a smooth and coherent way. If you start at the beginning with x back cover and Union cross/dark road that would definitely confuse most players as the game was made with the mindset that players know roughly who the characters are and what’s happening.
I appreciate you saying that. That's exactly the point I hope to convey. Each entry is heavily tied to each other. Even if it has things that happened earlier in the timeline, it assumes you know what happened in the previous game lol. The story is supposed to make you ask some questions and have exciting reveals. Going chronological is confusing, like you said, but also ruins a lot of setup for these surprises.
Bought the package on PS4 and a used PS4 for my wife's birthday so she can relive some childhood moments. Tbh I feel that union x is important to play before the keyblade graveyard in kh3 since people can get confused by ephemer just showing up. Also i feel that the content is important for remind and the final cutscene in kh3.
You have a good point, and I would agree with you. I do think it might be a hard sell for someone just getting into the series now. But now that we've got stuff like the fandub cutscenes for khux, it'll definitely be easier! X Backcover was just sort of a supplemental abridged version of KHUX that sort of gives you just enough to recognize Ephemer, the Union Masters, and MoM. It's not enough, but it got the job somewhat done 😂
It’s frustrating just how messy X was released. I 100% believe that everything in the original browser game (up to the Keyblade War) is best, but not required, before KH3. This is because it provides background knowledge for Back Cover but otherwise doesn’t have a lot of important information. But then UX really seems to be best after KH3. This is because it is clearly setting up a lot, and I mean a LOT, for the next arc, but almost none of it is paid off in KH3 (the closest we get are teases that work just as well as foreshadowing, like KH2FM’s nods to BBS), so it could end up feeling like a letdown.
@just_queso I hope you were able to enjoy it somewhat, haha😆 I understand that you could technically view Days before or after, but my argument is that it completely recontextualizes KH2 and adds a lot more depth for when you replay it. The tone is also completely different, as you might have figured out as well 😅
@@smugaru I completely understand why 358 comes AFTER KH2 it makes 100% total sense dawg, now I did play BBS before I played KH2 which was my downfall, but I knew who Roxas/Ventus was before I went into KH2, but still had so many questions like how’s Sora so strong to create 2 whole beings just from his own heart, because Xion and Roxas are literal 2 halves of Soras heart if I’m correct, Xion being Kairis heart I believe, and Roxas just having the other half of Soras heart, but still like overall you have helped me out so much, I’m playing Dream Drop Distance as I make this comment 🙌
@just_queso That's awesome!! I'm so glad you're enjoying the games. Dream Drop Distance is one I still need to replay. Regarding Xion, they're pretty much an anomaly. They're not actually a being directly created from Sora or Kairi like Roxas and Namine were. They were created to copy Roxas's power and began absorbing Sora's memories as a side effect (implied it was his memories of Kairi). This leads to them forming their own identity as a result. Xion basically became an unintended 3rd wheel for waking Sora up 😅 What I find really interesting is that this means Sora is literally half a person from the climax of KH1 throughout CoM and was still very strong, hahaha.
I stopped 2.5 midway and finished the chain of memories movie. I agree with OP as you will get the story of how it was properly released but going back to Re:COM after 2.5 isn't going to be detrimental to your experience. The game does a good job of making some spoilers safe and having value when you retroactively discover it. But do yourself a favor and at least get the main points of chain of memories during or before you complete 2.5 And 358/2 days is wayyyyyy better after you complete 2.5. There are some serious spoilers to 2.5 in 358/2 days.

Definitely, yes to the fandub! I feel you'd wanna do backcover first, though, because it's like a very surface level, abridged version of UX where very little actually happens 😆 Actual KHUX story goes crazy lol.

Square Enix have also finally made this statement themselves. Since we have all of the games bundled or stories accessible, definitely do release order for your initial playthrough.

I agree. Letting a story build up mysteries and reveals is more engaging (if done well). What I find so odd though are the people who treat this particular layered narrative as if it's a weird or uncommon way to tell stories lol. I really do think release order is the best. Not only the plot twists won't be spoiled and see some characters' true colors and start to feel bad for them, but also to see how the game advance throughout the years. Stuff like game mechanics, the ever growing cast of characters, secrets and going from a prequel from 2010 to the original from 2002 won't be jarring because clearly Birth By Sleep will have that combat feel from KH2 (Albeit edited to get over the PSP's lack of certain buttons) and KH1 clearly going more platforming (In my eyes) rather than the more fluid combat the future installments have due to more jumping moments and stiff combat. This is why I think the same for stuff like the Star Wars Skywalker Saga.
I'm wondering if there has been a shift towards people suggesting chronological order in response to series breakdown videos and story explained etc. But I agree completely. You sacrifice a lot of the surprises in the story with chronological order. I think there's a stigma against being confused for any amount of time in a narrative, even though a lot of stuff in KH does get explained lol The evolution of game mechanics is such a good point as well. I always forget to bring that up 😆
2 things... as a long time enjoyer, id argue a couple things about release order. 1.) 358/2 should be BEFORE KH2 because the extra Roxas and Axel scenes added in final mix in the late game are meaningless if you didnt play 358 first. There's spoilers both ways. 358 first spoils some Riku stuff, but playing 358 first makes the cutscene with Roxas and Axel at the end of the game hit WAY harder. Just my opinion, I guess. 2.) I's 3D, Back Cover, THEN A Fragmentary Passage because that game bleeds directly into 3 and plays just like 3. It works either way, but it feels better that way imo and they came out at the same time so it's no big deal. Otherwise, great short vid. Thanks mate!
The Days before/after KH2 will just always be debated at this point lol. It won't be the end of the world I guess, but I just have my personal opinions about it 😂😂 Now, 0.2 before KH3, that is pretty based, and I would absolutely agree hahaha. It makes way more sense for it to serve as the KH3 prologue that it was probably going to be.
If you're like me and don't want to slog through every single game, I'd honestly say you can skip the 2 DS games if you want: Re:Coded and (to a lesser extent) 358/2 Days. Their stories are mostly self-contained compared to the rest of the series and don't really leave that big of an impact on KH3 or any other game. With Days, you will miss out on some character development & emotional moments between the side characters (mainly Roxas & Xion), but nothing super important or necessary like say, BBS. If you don't care about Roxas (even though he's one of my favorite characters) or need every little detail of the story it's pretty safe to just ignore it. Other than those 2, just play/watch them in release order & you're golden. Pretty straightforward imo
Yeah, I definitely get what you're saying. I would still say Days is worth experiencing, but I can't lie, a lot of it is just sitting and talking (or standing and talking.) 😅😅 Without an actual game to play in the collection, the value of it does go down a bit unfortunately lol. The story is still good, it's just a lot (especially if you do it before KH2) And yeah Re:Coded could be chopped. Only the final moments are really relevant to the overall story.

I'm very proud to say I still own the original Kingdom Hearts on PlayStation 2 holographic original cover with the original game manual. Not the greatest hits. In full working condition. I am not a game collector and it is the only game from the past that I still have. Well I also have Digimon World 2 and 3 for PlayStation 1😂 but thats a whole different story man 😂
I mean, chronological order is nice if you have already done a play through, but if it is your first play through then order of release is the best way. Kinda like Star Wars in which if you never watch Star Wars the best way to watch is 4-6 and then 1-3.

I tried to get my fiancé to play in order he played kh1 and the tutorial of com then he jumped all the way to 3 and just finished Ventus on bbs so lmao I gave up he’s just playing whatever interests him
In my opinion I always played the series in the order it originally came in… Kh1, Chain of memories, Days, 2, birth by sleep, recoded I believe numora put it in that order for a reason because he wanted us to play through the series in that order Tho, nobody can go wrong switching days and 2 Me personally love to play days ahead of 2 because days used worlds and models from the 1.5 hd remix and the ending of days picks up where KH2 starts so it feels more right to play it that way, But either way, you’ll all end up at the same ending, all plot points will be covered either way…
Yeah, for sure. I do still have my little hang ups for why I personally suggest release order, but as long as someone's still able to enjoy the story and understand it for themselves haha.
Whats the difference between the normal versions and the final mix of the games? Do I need to play the final mix or its enough with the normal versions?
@AngelAOOrtiz Final Mix was just the name used for what's essentially the enhanced edition of that game, like what we'd call like a "game of the year" or "deluxe edition" now. The differences were mainly adjusted stats, abilities, additional bosses, and reskinning enemies. Final Mix is the standard version that's available to buy now, though. The Remix collections are basically remastered versions of the games, so Remaster + Final Mix = Remix lol
What I got out of this video is I need new friends. 😂 Any new fans to KH may benefit from not having to play union cross and just enjoying cutscenes. No filler quests to deal with.

Weird thing about Re:coded, the first episode of coded, the original version, was released on mobile phones before 358/2 Days, but its last episode released in 2010 a little after BBS came out. So does it make more sense to play Re:coded after KH2 or BBS? Also thinking about playing Union X before 2.8, then Dark Road after 2.8. Is that a valid way of approaching it?
I've always found that so interesting about Coded honestly lol. Personally, I'd say do Re:Coded after BBS. The ending assumes that you have. I would say watch Union X AFTER watching X Backcover (or I guess after 2.8 lol) X Backcover is only a tiny portion of the UX story. Enough to get you set for KH3 but gives very little. Dark Road I would say is better after KH3, but both DR and UX could also be done during it imo. Technically Union X isn't playable anymore, but if you mean watching the cutscenes then yes. I agree with release order, but with a couple changes. Play BBS first, then play through release order until you beat DDD. After that, watch UX and maybe dark road before playing 0.2, followed by 3 to wrap xehanort saga up.
@@johnkiggs108 I wouldn't like suggesting BBS first because that'd be spoiling all of the connections ahead of time. There's no build up or reveal then. BBS recontextualizes a lot of KH 1 and 2, and is more impactful when looked at after playing those two. Dark Road is sort of in the same camp. I'd say save it for after KH3. It's supposed to delve into Xehanort and explain why he is the way that he is. Stories can be told out of order and still make sense lol 😅

Personally I think watching Back Cover before 0.2 is better. The opening of 0.2 doesn't make much sense without it and 0.2 is litterally just the prologue of KH3 that's been hacked off as a teaser and leads directly into KH 3... or KH 2.9 :P

Watching the cutscenes for chain of memories is more than ok, you don't have to play it. I just recommend not skipping the game's story entirely, haha. The story is really good and should be seen!

Yeah, just to clarify, The "all in one" package includes The story so far plus KH3. It's 3 discs The story so far is KH1.5+ 2.5 and 2.8 packaged together as two discs. Either will do, but the All In One would be better if you for sure wanted KH3 as well. It may not include its DLC though

This was very helpful. I clicked this video because I was confused on the order for the X games. I had no idea that 358/2 days should come after kh2. Spoiler: I watched the 358/2 days game movie and got so attached to Roxas that I almost cried when he died in kh2.
I guess it is more personal opinion on if 358/2 Days should be before or after KH2. I believe it's better saved to after KH2 because the confusion of not knowing who Roxas is initially adds to the experience. Doing 358/2 afterward changes how you view the events of KH2 and completely re-contextualizes the intro when you replay it. I may need to go more in-depth on the topic in another video😂
The collections are already in order, it'll be super easy to get back into it. You got this lol 😌 The only one out of place imo is 358/2 Days, just watch it after KH2.
I got The story so far, and since I played only the ds , GBA and psp games back in the day , I started with Birth by sleep 0.2 And them KH1 Kh chains of memories Days And now I'm playing kh2 The more I play those games , the more I appreciate the ds games and the psp game , they really did a great job bringing PS2 experience to those handhelds 🙂 By the way the first kh game I ever plays was Days and when I finished it I was sure that all of this was a dream and the boys has few more days before it's summer vacation is over . It was very confusing when I saw Roxas in birth by sleep ,but now his name was Ventus 😅
Yeah Days was really impressive. BBS as well. I really love recoded, too! That play order is kind of wild though, not really what I'd suggest personally, but as long as you're able to keep everything together 😂

And days will always be a special game for me .But of course everyone has an opinion 🙂 after I finish kh2 the only one left will be the movie from 2.8 and kh3 . So I'm almost over with this series. Melody of memories I don't think I'll play , and (if I'm not mistaken) it's switch exclusive, so I won't buy Nintendo switch for it .

I haven't finished it myself, but from what I understand it does have some story details at the end. You can simply watch the story cutscenes on RUclips when you get to that game. No need to stress it lol.

I will still suggest new players do release order for both story and gameplay reasons. Especially now that the games are available more easily. I don't believe the story was really designed with chronological order in mind for a first playthrough. I can see chronological being interesting when you're doing a series replay.
@PoppyPopsticle The plot takes place across all of the games. You can play 1, 2, & 3, but all of the story won't be there. If you're not interested in checking out the non numbered games, I'd at least consider watching a synopsis for the ones you decide not to play. KH3 does have a pretty good written synopsis of all the prior games If that's the one you really want to start with.
I think chronological order is fine, and it can potentially help with understanding the overarching plot of the Dark Seeker Saga, HOWEVER only on a second playthrough. First playthrough should always be release order as described here
Alright. Release order cool, but whats the meaning of "story so far 1.5 + 2.5 remix" throughout the video? Is that for casuals who dont want to buy loads od copies and play for the story of Sora only?
I was showing that in hopes of making it clear as to what was included in the "Story so far" collection. Story so far is 2 discs that include 1.5+2.5 remix on one disc and 2.8 on the second disc. The All-in-One collection is just the story so far with KH3 added as the third disc.
So what I’m getting is for a FIRST time player release order is the way to go and if you’re REPLAYING then timeline? Man this is extremely confusing to me 😂
Yeah, if you've never played the games before I would recommend release order. The collections are already set like this with the exception of one game. Don't worry it's very easy 😂

okay so i need to know since this is where kingdom hearts fans exist. why do people like it so much? what makes kingdom hearts so lovable? ive always wondered about it but it always looked goofy. i just wanna know what the appeal is. (if you have a favorite character throw them in here because i cool characters are an easy way for me to get hooked)
Speaking for myself. A big part of the appeal for me is how it blends together endearing anime characters with wholesome Disney flair and pairing that with surprisingly fun and exciting action rpg combat (The combat is another big draw.) The series also has fantastic music! It also handles a lot of nice themes that deal with the importance of relationships and connection, that have really resonated with me. I really love most of the characters, but Sora, Roxas and Riku would be my standouts. Yes, some of it can come off as silly or cringe on the surface. I think anything that's anime in anyway tends to get a little ridiculous or overly dramatic, but that is part of the charm honestly. I think it's easy to write the series off due to the memes. It's a genuinely compelling series that's also just really fun to play. It's one of those things where it doesn't seem like it should work, but it does lol.
The story so far pack is: KH 1.5+2.5 and KH 2.8 as 2 discs This has everything aside from KH3 and melody of memory, which are separate and currently not in a compilation👍
Technically yes but the stories do heavily relate to each other, so I'd still recommend checking out of the stories for the games in between the mainline games as there are important details.
If you play 2 straight after 1, you'll have no idea why Sora ended up where he is or what's going on with him. If you play 3 after 2.. God save your soul. You'll feel like you're in a completely different timeline. Don't skip the other games. 1/2/3/bbs/com/ddd/ and the cutscenes.
Yes and No COM has other five organization that not two, leads into 2 Days is Roxas orgin BBS show main antagonist and three important people DDD explains thing going happen in there. Black Cover/Union Cross has small detail that becomes important later. You could skip Recoded if you want.
You can and I will admit 2.5 does a really good job of giving enough hints. But a lot of Organization 13 will just come across as annoying plot devices if you don't understand their story. And Riku's side of 2.5 will seem kind of rushed and shoved in. And holy god it is not. There is a whole journey and layers to it.
Re mind is weird. It offers a lot of clarification on some of the more vague plot points in KH3 and fully expands on the ending, so it is actually really helpful. But it is primarily hard boss fights (and then even harder superbosses💀) If you don't want to play it, skip playing it, and just watch the cutscenes after you finish KH3.
Ideally yes. Chain of memories/re:chain of memories is the direct sequel to Kingdom hearts 1 and sets up a lot things for KH2 and after. If you don't like the gameplay, watch the cutscenes on RUclips at the very least. The story is good!
Very interesting thought, what makes you feel that way? Considering BBS is teased at the end of KH2, playing it ahead feels redundant to me. Personally, the stories weren't made to be told in chronological order, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
@@smugaru In BBS some off the side things get explained like why can sora wield the keyblade and The main villain gets introduced i personally like it to play in the cronological order so that i dont have questions when i play later games. But i can see why you would start with 2

I wouldn't disagree except for the fact that Blank Points kinda throws a wrench into everything since it references events that take place AFTER kingdom hearts 2.

thinking about getting a playstation with all the games. should i get a ps4 or a ps5? and if i get a ps5, can i still get all the games that are on ps4 and play through the games regularly, or are there downsides? and will kingdom hearts 4 be on ps4 too, or just ps5 (if it releases) ? What should i buy, ps4 or ps5?
It's too early to say whether or not KH4 will release on PS4 as well. The All-in-one collection were released for PS4 but appear to be compatible with PS5 from what I can tell. I can't imagine there would be much in the way of downsides of playing them on PS5? I don't have a PS5 myself, but it might be worth it, if you can afford it for future proofing. They're also on Xbox and PC now if those were options too!
@@khronoscythe It looks you should be able to buy the KH games for PS4 (digital or physical), and they will still work on PS5. I don't know about every PS4 games, but it seems like a lot of them are supposed to work! Hope that helps 💛

Why play in release order? Is there any particular reason not to play in chronological order? I've only played KH1, KH2 and Re CoM. I am interested in experiencing the full story, but I'm not sure I understand.
Some will argue against it But I say play in release order because the story is designed that way. Games like Birth by Sleep and 358/2 Days are prequels to KH 1 and KH 2, respectively, but they assume that you've played those games already. I think they lose a lot of their impact when played in chronological order. The intro to 358/2 literally shows and spoils scenes of the organization members from KH2 BBS re-contextualizes a lot of the events and things we've seen in KH1 and 2 The games in the remix collections now are mostly in release order anyway, with the exception of 358/2

@xvmvk8061 I would argue it does spoil quite a bit of the story of KH2. All organization members are shown, and their motivation and setup are explained. Also, adding in a character who is completely absent from KH2. I do agree it makes KH2 more impactful, but on a replay. It's just something I personally disagree with, but I know it's not the end of the world lol.

@@kyle-packard Ahhh ok gotcha! The names are just creative ways of hinting at themes or ideas from that game. I wouldn't get too hung up on that since plenty of games/movies have subtitles that don't make sense until you actually see it lol. There are a lot of entries, but KH3 is the only one that has DLC and its typically sold together at this point. Two of the games are cutscene "movies" (followed by one being an actual CG movie) None of that is really important to know, you'll find out when you launch them lol KH3 and Melody of Memory are the newest yeah, and it's possible they may eventually end up in new bundle later down the line as part of a "3.5 Remix"
@smugaru I'm torn between the recoded story being trash or non-existent trash(like trash that leaves a bad odor after you clean it up). The only good thing that I can say about the game is that it had some pretty fun gameplay aspects.

I didn't mention the mobile games in the shorts version because I kinda agree with you that they'd be overwhelming to someone starting out that there are mobile games they'd need to check out too, lol. @eugenioasanchezperez1406 Yeah, I sort of agree. The story pacing is pretty inconsistent, and some of it just sort of drags. I can understand why and have mostly made peace with it. Gameplay aged really well, thankfully, but narratively, it's all over the place. Doesn't help that they showed so much story in the trailers either.
The real reason Days is listed before 2 is just because the first collection (1.5) had it, and they figured for whatever dumb reason that it needed to be all 1.5 first and then all 2.5.
I 100% believe that lol. I can understand them just needing Days to fill in for 1.5 back then, but it still being the only game kinda out of place is so annoying 😂🙈

As a complete outsider to this game series, naming your games something like "KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX" is extremely confusing. Why the .5 after the numbers, why are there 2 numbers (1.5 + 2.5) and then what is the ReMIX of these two fractional numbers? I am beyond confused. Should have called it "Kingdom Hearts Remastered Collection 1" then "- Collection 2" , "-Collection 3", and so on or something.
It's very literal which I get would be confusing.
The .5 signifies that the collection covers material that goes beyond just the single title and encompasses between 1 & 2, and 2 & 3.
But, having one literally called 1.5 + 2.5 is a lot ngl lol
They have tried to move away from it with the "Story so far" and "All in one" collection, but it may take a complete rebranding during the next phase lol.
Remix is literally just the name they chose for the collection as opposed to just going with Remastered, Complete Edition, or HD collection.
I assumed it was to play off 'Final Mix' being the naming for the complete versions of the older games. Final mix + Remaster = Remix.
Kingdom hearts should definitely be played in release order as the order the games where originally released allow you to get given questions and answers in a smooth and coherent way.
If you start at the beginning with x back cover and Union cross/dark road that would definitely confuse most players as the game was made with the mindset that players know roughly who the characters are and what’s happening.

The story is supposed to make you ask some questions and have exciting reveals. Going chronological is confusing, like you said, but also ruins a lot of setup for these surprises.
Bought the package on PS4 and a used PS4 for my wife's birthday so she can relive some childhood moments. Tbh I feel that union x is important to play before the keyblade graveyard in kh3 since people can get confused by ephemer just showing up. Also i feel that the content is important for remind and the final cutscene in kh3.
You have a good point, and I would agree with you. I do think it might be a hard sell for someone just getting into the series now. But now that we've got stuff like the fandub cutscenes for khux, it'll definitely be easier!
X Backcover was just sort of a supplemental abridged version of KHUX that sort of gives you just enough to recognize Ephemer, the Union Masters, and MoM. It's not enough, but it got the job somewhat done 😂
It’s frustrating just how messy X was released. I 100% believe that everything in the original browser game (up to the Keyblade War) is best, but not required, before KH3. This is because it provides background knowledge for Back Cover but otherwise doesn’t have a lot of important information.
But then UX really seems to be best after KH3. This is because it is clearly setting up a lot, and I mean a LOT, for the next arc, but almost none of it is paid off in KH3 (the closest we get are teases that work just as well as foreshadowing, like KH2FM’s nods to BBS), so it could end up feeling like a letdown.
I just watched 358 days after 2 and I seriously appreciate you for that brother, my heart is absolutely shattered, but still, I appreciate you 😭🙌

@@smugaru I completely understand why 358 comes AFTER KH2 it makes 100% total sense dawg, now I did play BBS before I played KH2 which was my downfall, but I knew who Roxas/Ventus was before I went into KH2, but still had so many questions like how’s Sora so strong to create 2 whole beings just from his own heart, because Xion and Roxas are literal 2 halves of Soras heart if I’m correct, Xion being Kairis heart I believe, and Roxas just having the other half of Soras heart, but still like overall you have helped me out so much, I’m playing Dream Drop Distance as I make this comment 🙌

Regarding Xion, they're pretty much an anomaly. They're not actually a being directly created from Sora or Kairi like Roxas and Namine were.
They were created to copy Roxas's power and began absorbing Sora's memories as a side effect (implied it was his memories of Kairi). This leads to them forming their own identity as a result.
Xion basically became an unintended 3rd wheel for waking Sora up 😅
What I find really interesting is that this means Sora is literally half a person from the climax of KH1 throughout CoM and was still very strong, hahaha.
I stopped 2.5 midway and finished the chain of memories movie. I agree with OP as you will get the story of how it was properly released but going back to Re:COM after 2.5 isn't going to be detrimental to your experience. The game does a good job of making some spoilers safe and having value when you retroactively discover it. But do yourself a favor and at least get the main points of chain of memories during or before you complete 2.5
And 358/2 days is wayyyyyy better after you complete 2.5. There are some serious spoilers to 2.5 in 358/2 days.

I really do think release order is the best. Not only the plot twists won't be spoiled and see some characters' true colors and start to feel bad for them, but also to see how the game advance throughout the years. Stuff like game mechanics, the ever growing cast of characters, secrets and going from a prequel from 2010 to the original from 2002 won't be jarring because clearly Birth By Sleep will have that combat feel from KH2 (Albeit edited to get over the PSP's lack of certain buttons) and KH1 clearly going more platforming (In my eyes) rather than the more fluid combat the future installments have due to more jumping moments and stiff combat. This is why I think the same for stuff like the Star Wars Skywalker Saga.

2 things... as a long time enjoyer, id argue a couple things about release order.
1.) 358/2 should be BEFORE KH2 because the extra Roxas and Axel scenes added in final mix in the late game are meaningless if you didnt play 358 first. There's spoilers both ways. 358 first spoils some Riku stuff, but playing 358 first makes the cutscene with Roxas and Axel at the end of the game hit WAY harder. Just my opinion, I guess.
2.) I's 3D, Back Cover, THEN A Fragmentary Passage because that game bleeds directly into 3 and plays just like 3. It works either way, but it feels better that way imo and they came out at the same time so it's no big deal.

The Days before/after KH2 will just always be debated at this point lol. It won't be the end of the world I guess, but I just have my personal opinions about it 😂😂
Now, 0.2 before KH3, that is pretty based, and I would absolutely agree hahaha. It makes way more sense for it to serve as the KH3 prologue that it was probably going to be.
If you're like me and don't want to slog through every single game, I'd honestly say you can skip the 2 DS games if you want: Re:Coded and (to a lesser extent) 358/2 Days. Their stories are mostly self-contained compared to the rest of the series and don't really leave that big of an impact on KH3 or any other game. With Days, you will miss out on some character development & emotional moments between the side characters (mainly Roxas & Xion), but nothing super important or necessary like say, BBS. If you don't care about Roxas (even though he's one of my favorite characters) or need every little detail of the story it's pretty safe to just ignore it.
Other than those 2, just play/watch them in release order & you're golden. Pretty straightforward imo

Without an actual game to play in the collection, the value of it does go down a bit unfortunately lol. The story is still good, it's just a lot (especially if you do it before KH2)
And yeah Re:Coded could be chopped. Only the final moments are really relevant to the overall story.

Whats the difference between the normal versions and the final mix of the games? Do I need to play the final mix or its enough with the normal versions?
@AngelAOOrtiz Final Mix was just the name used for what's essentially the enhanced edition of that game, like what we'd call like a "game of the year" or "deluxe edition" now.
The differences were mainly adjusted stats, abilities, additional bosses, and reskinning enemies.
Final Mix is the standard version that's available to buy now, though.
The Remix collections are basically remastered versions of the games, so Remaster + Final Mix = Remix lol

Weird thing about Re:coded, the first episode of coded, the original version, was released on mobile phones before 358/2 Days, but its last episode released in 2010 a little after BBS came out. So does it make more sense to play Re:coded after KH2 or BBS?

Personally, I'd say do Re:Coded after BBS. The ending assumes that you have.
I would say watch Union X AFTER watching X Backcover (or I guess after 2.8 lol)
X Backcover is only a tiny portion of the UX story. Enough to get you set for KH3 but gives very little.
Dark Road I would say is better after KH3, but both DR and UX could also be done during it imo.
Technically Union X isn't playable anymore, but if you mean watching the cutscenes then yes.

I agree with release order, but with a couple changes. Play BBS first, then play through release order until you beat DDD. After that, watch UX and maybe dark road before playing 0.2, followed by 3 to wrap xehanort saga up.
I havent seen everything on dark road, so correct me if that's better saved for after kh3 due to luxu's reveal

There's no build up or reveal then.
BBS recontextualizes a lot of KH 1 and 2, and is more impactful when looked at after playing those two.

It's supposed to delve into Xehanort and explain why he is the way that he is.

Watching the cutscenes for chain of memories is more than ok, you don't have to play it. I just recommend not skipping the game's story entirely, haha.

Yeah, just to clarify, The "all in one" package includes The story so far plus KH3. It's 3 discs
The story so far is KH1.5+ 2.5 and 2.8 packaged together as two discs.
Either will do, but the All In One would be better if you for sure wanted KH3 as well. It may not include its DLC though

This was very helpful. I clicked this video because I was confused on the order for the X games. I had no idea that 358/2 days should come after kh2.
Spoiler:
I watched the 358/2 days game movie and got so attached to Roxas that I almost cried when he died in kh2.
I guess it is more personal opinion on if 358/2 Days should be before or after KH2. I believe it's better saved to after KH2 because the confusion of not knowing who Roxas is initially adds to the experience.
Doing 358/2 afterward changes how you view the events of KH2 and completely re-contextualizes the intro when you replay it.
I may need to go more in-depth on the topic in another video😂

And days will always be a special game for me .But of course everyone has an opinion 🙂 after I finish kh2 the only one left will be the movie from 2.8 and kh3 . So I'm almost over with this series. Melody of memories I don't think I'll play , and (if I'm not mistaken) it's switch exclusive, so I won't buy Nintendo switch for it .

I haven't finished it myself, but from what I understand it does have some story details at the end. You can simply watch the story cutscenes on RUclips when you get to that game. No need to stress it lol.

If you already own the 1.5 + 2.5 collection, Dream Drop Distance is a part of the 2.8 collection. Hopefully, that clears things up 💛

@houskatt8130 Oohh ok, if I understand correctly, All in one contains 3 discs: 1.5 + 2.5 is one disc, 2.8 (which has DDD on it) should be the second disc, and then KH3 is the third disc.

I don't believe the story was really designed with chronological order in mind for a first playthrough.

@PoppyPopsticle The plot takes place across all of the games. You can play 1, 2, & 3, but all of the story won't be there.
If you're not interested in checking out the non numbered games, I'd at least consider watching a synopsis for the ones you decide not to play.
KH3 does have a pretty good written synopsis of all the prior games If that's the one you really want to start with.
I think chronological order is fine, and it can potentially help with understanding the overarching plot of the Dark Seeker Saga, HOWEVER only on a second playthrough. First playthrough should always be release order as described here

Alright. Release order cool, but whats the meaning of "story so far 1.5 + 2.5 remix" throughout the video? Is that for casuals who dont want to buy loads od copies and play for the story of Sora only?
I was showing that in hopes of making it clear as to what was included in the "Story so far" collection.
Story so far is 2 discs that include 1.5+2.5 remix on one disc and 2.8 on the second disc.
The All-in-One collection is just the story so far with KH3 added as the third disc.

Yeah, if you've never played the games before I would recommend release order. The collections are already set like this with the exception of one game.

okay so i need to know since this is where kingdom hearts fans exist. why do people like it so much? what makes kingdom hearts so lovable? ive always wondered about it but it always looked goofy. i just wanna know what the appeal is. (if you have a favorite character throw them in here because i cool characters are an easy way for me to get hooked)
Speaking for myself. A big part of the appeal for me is how it blends together endearing anime characters with wholesome Disney flair and pairing that with surprisingly fun and exciting action rpg combat (The combat is another big draw.)
The series also has fantastic music!
It also handles a lot of nice themes that deal with the importance of relationships and connection, that have really resonated with me.
I really love most of the characters, but Sora, Roxas and Riku would be my standouts.
Yes, some of it can come off as silly or cringe on the surface.
I think anything that's anime in anyway tends to get a little ridiculous or overly dramatic, but that is part of the charm honestly.
I think it's easy to write the series off due to the memes.
It's a genuinely compelling series that's also just really fun to play.
It's one of those things where it doesn't seem like it should work, but it does lol.

Technically yes but the stories do heavily relate to each other, so I'd still recommend checking out of the stories for the games in between the mainline games as there are important details.
If you play 2 straight after 1, you'll have no idea why Sora ended up where he is or what's going on with him.
If you play 3 after 2.. God save your soul. You'll feel like you're in a completely different timeline.
Don't skip the other games. 1/2/3/bbs/com/ddd/ and the cutscenes.

You could skip Recoded if you want.
You can and I will admit 2.5 does a really good job of giving enough hints. But a lot of Organization 13 will just come across as annoying plot devices if you don't understand their story. And Riku's side of 2.5 will seem kind of rushed and shoved in. And holy god it is not. There is a whole journey and layers to it.

Re mind is weird. It offers a lot of clarification on some of the more vague plot points in KH3 and fully expands on the ending, so it is actually really helpful.
But it is primarily hard boss fights (and then even harder superbosses💀)
If you don't want to play it, skip playing it, and just watch the cutscenes after you finish KH3.

Chain of memories/re:chain of memories is the direct sequel to Kingdom hearts 1 and sets up a lot things for KH2 and after.

@@smugaru In BBS some off the side things get explained like why can sora wield the keyblade and The main villain gets introduced i personally like it to play in the cronological order so that i dont have questions when i play later games. But i can see why you would start with 2

thinking about getting a playstation with all the games. should i get a ps4 or a ps5? and if i get a ps5, can i still get all the games that are on ps4 and play through the games regularly, or are there downsides? and will kingdom hearts 4 be on ps4 too, or just ps5 (if it releases) ? It's too early to say whether or not KH4 will release on PS4 as well. The All-in-one collection were released for PS4 but appear to be compatible with PS5 from what I can tell.
I can't imagine there would be much in the way of downsides of playing them on PS5?
I don't have a PS5 myself, but it might be worth it, if you can afford it for future proofing.
They're also on Xbox and PC now if those were options too!

Why play in release order? Is there any particular reason not to play in chronological order? I've only played KH1, KH2 and Re CoM. I am interested in experiencing the full story, but I'm not sure I understand.
Some will argue against it
But I say play in release order because the story is designed that way.
Games like Birth by Sleep and 358/2 Days are prequels to KH 1 and KH 2, respectively, but they assume that you've played those games already.
I think they lose a lot of their impact when played in chronological order.
The intro to 358/2 literally shows and spoils scenes of the organization members from KH2
BBS re-contextualizes a lot of the events and things we've seen in KH1 and 2
The games in the remix collections now are mostly in release order anyway, with the exception of 358/2

@xvmvk8061 I would argue it does spoil quite a bit of the story of KH2. All organization members are shown, and their motivation and setup are explained. Also, adding in a character who is completely absent from KH2.

The names are just creative ways of hinting at themes or ideas from that game. I wouldn't get too hung up on that since plenty of games/movies have subtitles that don't make sense until you actually see it lol.
There are a lot of entries, but KH3 is the only one that has DLC and its typically sold together at this point.
Two of the games are cutscene "movies" (followed by one being an actual CG movie)
None of that is really important to know, you'll find out when you launch them lol
KH3 and Melody of Memory are the newest yeah, and it's possible they may eventually end up in new bundle later down the line as part of a "3.5 Remix"

Gameplay aged really well, thankfully, but narratively, it's all over the place.
