@@DrAlexisStephens can you please recommend face cleansers for melasma
cold water?? warm water best
Are no rinse cleansers effective?
Oh, so if we skip it they don't get it?
her list
• wash your hands
• use luke warm water
• cleanse with the cleanser for you (learn your skin)
• take your time cleansing (45-60 seconds)
• clean your face, neck , and hairline.
• use a towel dedicated to your face.
• don’t cleanse too aggressively (over exfoliate)
• only double cleanse if you wear heavy make.
Thank you so much darl 👏🏽💖
Thanks. I was looking for this in the description box.
You a hero!!!!
What about double cleansing if you wear sunscreen during the day? Should you still double cleanse (oil cleanser then a face wash)
Thank youu ❤️❤️
Thank you for starting with HAND WASHING! So important, esp. these days.
It is a step that so many people forget to do!
And if the water would have been turned off whilst washing that would have been perfect 😉
Yes!! I’ve always wondered how people wash their face with unclean hands.
@@fefemyluv Exactly! Just thinking abt it grosses me out
She’s so soft spoken and detailed
I'm in the 20%, my Grandmother started taking me to get facials at 13, along with giving me a 3 step skin regimen. All those good habits I passed along to my daughter. 😊
I absolutely love that
i’m gonna be that grandmother
she’s literally gorgeous

I was about to write that! She actually looked prettier in my eyes in her bare skin… ie her demo video.

Too bad for you

Thank you for the short video. It was simple and straight to the point. I can’t stand when people make 15-25 minute videos that are beating around the bush while I’m just desperate looking for answers!!!
@AspenFalls Vermont Okay but why make a video so long if it could’ve been shorter? So rude for no reason...
I agree she does look a little like her xx

I watched the commercial before this video so sis can get her coin ✨

She does!
Yep, they look like sisters 😊

Funny that there was one time when I said an ancient African princess looked like Brandy, some people just came in and be all worked up saying I was racist cuz I compare black people.
@@truongphan9082 Well how did you compare them? What did you say exactly? If it was just something like, "Oh Brandy really reminds me of Princess X from X country" I don't think people would've been upset.
Would love a video on how to fix a damaged skin barrier.
Absolutely! Will do that soon. Great request :)
Have recently started on Vaseline petroleum Jelly and all I can say it’s working for me. I had tried quite a lot of things before that and it didn’t work 😩
Yay, I can’t wait for that video!
@@Smileyface908 i tried that, but it clogged my pores and I broke out :((
Stick to moisturizing for a couple weeks and cut everything else out of your routine. Use the most gentle cleanser if you’re currently using something that’s not the most gentle. Use something with barrier repairing ingredients like cica, panthenol, etc. The La Roche Posay Cicaplast baum is a good option, it’s very very thick and contains all those good barrier repairing ingredients
I love that she uses the terms skin characteristics rather than skin type. It is a much more informed term. After moving to a new area of the country for school, I didn't know what was going on with my skin.
Her natural self looks like she's wearing makeup. I could only imagine
Even if she is wearing makeup you can still tell she has good skin. Also the videos of her waking her face show her skin 8s good...so take her advice because makeup has nothing to do with this video
@@LaGoKenyane I didnt say the video had anything to do with makeup. I'm giving a compliment that's it. Nothing more or less.
@@LaGoKenyaneCalm down and read what was said.
No need for makeup when your face is flawless, maybe like eye liner and those type of things

I wonder what they did back in the 50's and 60"s for beautiful skin! It was much less complicated!
The earth was less polluted and there wasn't a gaping hole in the ozone layer
@@Lolly27British I agree on the pollution....everything is polluted food, water and some of these products we use on our face and body!
Black people just have beautiful skin just used water thats all
Most likely healthy diet and cleanliness
It's not there was less pollution....in fact there is less today. It was combination of eating real foods and being more active. There weren't transfat and high fructose corn syrup in everything, and no fake sweeteners. People did more manual housework and yardwork, and walked everywhere. It shows in their skin.

Dr. your skin is so beautiful, I hope my skin looks like yours one day. 😍
Love your tone of voice and the pace when explaining the topic of this video.
Omggg i am so confused by all the skincare routines and tips on youtube. And this video has answered so many questions!! I've wasted so muvh time watching others vids that left me more confused. You can clearly see the difference between youtube skin 'experts' and a real doctor. I'm so happy I've found your channel! Subscribed 💛🙌
If I didn’t turn on caption I wouldn’t have know she said skin “characteristics”. But I love that description best as opposed to skin “type”. Thank you for theses tips
Thank you Dr A. I never thought of washing my hands before washing my face. Will correct my mistake right from today.
I don't usually learn much from videos like this but Dr. Alexis Stephens taught me a ton. Thank you 💕
This was super helpful and straight to the point. Next to switch out my face towel more often. I use the same one exclusively on my face for a week. I didn't know a damp face works better with a moisturiser! Definitely need to use the two finger method
Hello Dr. Please please keep these informative videos coming ! We love them
Thank you so much! I will. Love helping everyone out on their skin health journey!
I’d love to hear more about this!
What has helped me so far: pumping the brakes on exfoliation and avoiding all essential oil-laced products.
I used to exfoliate twice weekly with a low-strength glycolic wash, but now I do so once every 1.5 weeks with a salicylic acid cleanser.
Dr Alexis Stephens what do you say about once or twice a day washing? I hear conflicting things about it.
I love you, I've watched so many skincare videos, but still learned something new with you.
Her voice is so calming, from her manners I can tell she was raised well. She is what my mother would call from a good family
Hopefully she marries a white man

THANK YOU. My goodness, I wish somebody had sat me down in high school and showed me how to do all these things correctly.
Merci infiniment from Paris, France. Your channel provides all the tips I wish local dermatologists gave (but do not). Taking notes, learning lots and looking forward to the next video! Thank you!!!!
I am so glad I came across this video because when I tell people I wash my face separate from my body and use all-white rags, precisely for my face, they look at me like I’m doing too much!! I will be referring them to this video lol !! Because this is the exact way I wash my face!!
Thank you for this tips! I definitely gonna wash for more than 30 seconds and I always clean my hands before washing my face.
Thank you, Dr. Alexis! Your channel has been so informative about healing from acne and hyperpigmentation, especially for melanated skin! Would you consider doing a video about the best way to remove makeup (and sunscreen) as part of the nighttime routine? What do you recommend for products so they remove makeup & sunscreen, protect the skin barrier, don't promote irritation/inflammation, and enable us to follow with a gentle cleanser?
Thank you for this video! I can listen to you all day! I appreciate how you give options to different skin "characteristics". I have normal skin. Can you do a follow up/part 2 that goes over the order of the next steps in this routine?
Oh my goodness! How have I just discovered your channel?!? You videos are so informative and relatable for all skin types. Thank you for sharing your expertise!!
I swear, you are God sent!! No Seriously! Thank You
I learned so much from this especially choosing the right cleanser! Every thing else I’ve picked up over time
Proud that I already knew all these tips! Glad to know do I’m doing it right, thanks Doctor!
Consider making a video on how to layer skin products for day and night for aging skin. Thanks for your dedication and education on skincare for women of color!
What are your thoughts on double cleansing not only when you're wearing heavy makeup, but when your using sunscreen? Especially when reapplying throughout the day like recommended? Wouldn't that ensure you're effectively removing dirt, grime, and sunscreen buildup?
Thank you so much Dr. Stephens! This was eye-opening, I've been cleansing my skin wrong in more than a few ways
U have such a kind soul
Wow, loved this video, just found you and subscribed. I also like that you summarized.
This was very helpful, thank you!
Yasss, this is gold, this is by far where I see so many patients going a little wrong. :)
I'm a cosmetic consultant off and on for several years. I'm well aware of the cleansing program etc...cosmetic applications too. recently I began using the azelaic/niacinamide combos that you recommended for hypersensitivity. Let me just put it this way-my skin suddenly feels relaxed and much better. Thanks Dr.
I'd recommend double cleaning if you wear sunscreen as well, which everyone should be wearing 😂. It helps to break down the sunscreen ingredients. The cleansing process is so much better, at least for me it is.
Agreed! I wear a THICK layer of sunscreen everyday (and unfortunately, the sunscreen I'm currently using leaves a white caste. I'm trying to search for alternatives), and oil-cleansing (I use a balm) first at night helps break it all down, so that my water-based foaming acne cleanser can get everything else out of the pores and penetrate the skin better right after.
Yes! If you have water resistant sunscreen, double cleansing is basically a must-have! Albolene is a very affordable option for a first step. Then use whatever cleanser has been working for you already!!
Mary-Simone Elizabeth Collazo Black Girl Sunscreen is amazing. They sell it at Target
Yep agreed! Especially for water resistant sun cream
Yes!
She has a soothing voice...and she’s beautiful.
Speaking of my face wash routine....it’s whatever. Lol.

Thanks for this video! I always wash my hands before cleaning my face. Now i will admit I have rushed cleansing. Something I learned from this video is I use the wrong temp of water. I do use my Clarisonic everyday too. I do double cleanse. I have oily/ normal skin except under my eyes are dry.
You are so welcome!
@@DrAlexisStephens dear which soap is best for washing the face
Loved how you explained everything!! ❤️
Excellent, thorough, and to the point. Thank you!
Wow your skin without makeup looks amazing , please drop ur current am n pm skincare routine
So helpful! I haven't been washing my hands beforehand or cleansing long enough. I discovered a huge positive difference after I switched from fabric towels to paper towels. Now I use pure cotton disposable towels. They're about the size of facial tissue but thicker and softer. I used to double cleanse regularly, every 3 days at least because I'd get keratin plugs and oil cleanser was the only non-abrasive way to remove them. Recently after adding salicylic acid, I discovered it keeps the keratin plugs away longer so I probably only need to use oil cleanser once a week now?
I was going to ask about the facial towels. I love using them.
Thank you so much for the cleanser breakdown!
Another brilliant video. You’re a God sent🙏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾
I’m so happy I found you here on RUclips! Your voice is so calming, I love it
I double cleanse every night and I don't wear makeup. Double cleansing is a game changer for me

I love this video. Thank you for being so detailed. I’m a nurse and with covid haunting us great hand hygiene is so Important. I don’t think people realize your hands carry so many impurities. Also how important to double wash when using a oil base cleanser, then water base. You are awesome. Look forward to your next video!!! Be safe❤️🌺
You are so welcome! Thank you
I always cleanse my face with cold water because I saw in multiple RUclips videos that cold water helps to reduce your pores 🤔🤦🏽♀️
Cold water closes pores but if their is dirt and bacteria in them how do you get it out? I’ve always heard to rinse with cold water but not wash...
United WeStand actually you can’t change the size of your pores they depend on your genetics and also where you live (because of the climate) and from what I have gathered from dermatologist the only way to make them appear smaller is by cleaning well you skin to make sure that your pores aren’t clogged!! If they are clogged they look bigger because there is stuff in them...So cold water doesn’t change the size of them if you see a difference it could only be the fact that your skin gets tighter and usually it is recommended to wash your face with lukewarm water!! I hope it makes sense and it helped you ☺️
Lmao when people say that I’m just what are y’all talking about??? You can’t eliminate your pores
Shammah Emmanuel I mean it’s « normal » to think that the skin care industry is always putting out products saying this will make your pores will go away or wtv 😂 also for me I thought that it was true since I was watching RUclipsrs saying cold water close your pores but this is the prof to not listen to people who aren’t expert or who don’t study this subject
Sunflowergirl true. I don’t even watch skin care videos except I’m searching for a review of a particular product
Thank you Doctor! Your skin is glowing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This was so helpful and easy to do. Thank-you !
Your skin is glowing!!!!! ✨
From personal experience, for oily and combination skin, I’d recommend oil cleaning. By applying and massaging oil on your face, you’re tricking your sebum glands to stop producing too much sebum. I used a mix of castor oil and jojoba oil, massage it on my face, grab a clean, steaming hot towel and apply it to my face until cools down. I do that a couple of times until I feel like all the nourishing oil is in my pores. If need be, I apply a little bit of the same oil mix and that’s it. Simple. Works wonders.
Hi I would like to try this now do you apply moisturizer after oil cleansing or you use other cleanser after oil cleansing?
As always, thank you for your great content. Learning a lot from you.🙏🏿

How many times would I wash my face daily? So oily all the time. Thanks for this tips ♥️
I use microfiber washcloths specifically for my face. You can purchase a pack for relatively cheap and I only use those for my face. I also wash them separately as well.
You’re amazing, thank you for this.
Just ordered the face clothes and changed to your method today! You are drop dead gorgeous!!! Thanks for sharing
OMG, thank you for stressing the importance of patting the face dry instead of rubbing it.
I actually have a theory that the constant pulling and downward motion from rubbing the face dry actually contributes to facial sagging over years. Much like the way earlobes elongate from the use of heavy earrings over time.
💯
Your skin is soooooo gorgeous🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️

Skincare is not equal. Everyone has different skin needs and can tolerate ingredients on certain levels.
It is guess work honestly, but once you get with something that works, try to keep going.
Healthy clear skin also relies on a health clear system. Eating eight, exercise, vitamins, correct amounts of water, GENETICS, clean hands etc play a part too. May not cure acne, but it can help
Thank you for this! I really love your content! I just wanted to ask what your thoughts were on using facial brushes?
If you're using a facial brush it should be twice for the week max. Excessive use like how most people use it everyday, can lead to over exfoliation and just irritation of the entire skin. Plus, bacteria can grow in spin brushes because it stays wet in a humid place like the bathroom . I personally don't use face brushes again, I've switched over to chemical exfoliants which offers MUCH more benefits than physically exfoliating with a face brush. It's more effective and not as abrasive as face brushes. I recommend the ordinary aha bha 30% chemical peel. But if you're new to acids in your skin routine there are some gentler ones by the inkey list. I hope this helps. Oh and chemical exfoliants should be used once a week if you're new to it. ALWAYS follow the directions on the packaging.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! This is very helpful.
As always thank you very much, I will implement these valuable tips.
This makes me feel good to know that I am washing my face properly.
What face wash will you recommend for acne prone skin?
