  • I have found the Achilles' heel of my Toyota Solid Front Axle! The steering studs are the first thing to break since the SAS 2 years ago! Any upgrade suggestions? This in no way effects my overall thoughts on the solid axle swap, I highly recommend it, even with Toyota axles.

    To be absolutely clear I do not consider this axle weak. It's incredibly robust and overbuilt considering it was designed for a mini truck with tiny tires and no lockers... It is a solid option for anyone planning a solid axle swap. Over 2 years since my solid axle swap and this is the FIRST thing to break! I just want everyone to be aware of this potential break, and you can upgrade this with a 5th stud, 6 shooters, and/or ARP studs, and resolve this potential weak point issue. Thanks for watching!

      When would you consider upgrading to 1 ton axles if ever?

    • @DirtGarage
      @DirtGarage  4 года назад

      @@nsh040909 Never, most my wheeling is in the trees, and I'd never fit with wider axles. Not only that here in BC Canada we can't have any tire poke whatsoever, and I'm keeping this truck as a street rig for now!

  • @MattPratt
    @MattPratt 4 года назад +10

    They break when they get loose. So part of your wheeling ritual needs to be to check them. And upgrade to ARPs or similar. And do the 5th stud mod.

    • @DirtGarage
      @DirtGarage  4 года назад +3

      Oh I'm aware of these coming loose. Literally the night before Hell's Revenge where they broke I tightened all of them. I think they just slowly got weak from coming loose all the time. Some upgrades are defianetly required in the future.

  • @analog56x

    FIRST! haha
    the toyota solid axles are extremely tough, thought they arent without their flaws. the knuckle balls are another major weak point. i cant remember if you said you have them gusseted or not... i never broke any steering knuckle studs, but i have had them come loose once. i have however trashed a housing by bending the knuckle balls up and forwards haha! granted, i was running 42" tractor tires that stuck out way past my fenders hahaha
    gotta love trail fixing haha. ive been there myself. cant wait for more videos man! im aiming to have the mazda done by spring.

    • @DirtGarage

      For sure! This does not change my overall opinion on the Toyota solid axles. They are still ridiculously stout considering they are from mini trucks back in the day, never designed for lockers and 37s 😂 I do not have ball gussets, but they are on the list.

    • @analog56x
      @analog56x 4 года назад

      @@DirtGarage absolutely! Pound for pound they are the toughest axle going. Ive seen guys actually cut the balls off and weld d44 C knuckles to them haha, but thats a lot of work. With a bit of selective armoring, these axles are ridiculously tough! I ran 38" michelin xml's for a couple years on my 4runner with stock toyota parts in my axle. I just had a ring gear plate as well as an upper axle truss. No knuckle ball gussets, no fancy chromo parts haha. Only thing i broke occasionally were birfs, but i also had a spools front and rear haha

    Haha. The same thing happened to my tacoma. Snapped a cv on my bachelor party.....took it out, not know it was needed to hold bearings together. Needless to say, it did not end well......everything broke. Had to be towed out

    You boys gotta do some bracing and such no wonder youre breaking, also fifth stud is a cheap alternative to shooters and works awesome never had a problem since i fully built my front end.

    • @DirtGarage
      @DirtGarage  4 года назад +1

      Bracing on the Jeep? The front end was 100% redesigned days before Moab.. So it was hugely untested! Or are you talking bracing on my axle? I need ball gussets for sure, but I don't see this effecting my steering arms! Somethings gotta happen to my steering, whether 5th stud or shooters, Either way it's gonna happen.

    Quick question for you guys. I’m building a 84 4runner. It’ll occasionally do some trails here in Arizona. Nothing to straining. But I currently LS swapped it with a th350 and dual 23 spline cases. The 4Runner will be majority of its time in Glamis and neighboring dunes. My question is, how do think the rear axle will do? Currently have 5.29 gears locked and chromoly in the front. Rear is 5.29 and locked with Stock axles on 35’s. Should I upgrade to a v6 third or GM 12 bolt or keep it as is and see how far it’ll get me.

    • @DirtGarage
      @DirtGarage  4 года назад +1

      I would definitely put a v6 third in that! I've never had troubles with mine, I'm not LS, but supercharged 3.4 and locked front and rear.

    • @SubePelayo928
      @SubePelayo928 4 года назад

      Dirt Garage I appreciate the reply, just seeing what others have experienced. I do have access to both, reason why I asked. I’ve also been told to drop down to 4.88 gears as the pinions are slightly larger

    • @DirtGarage
      @DirtGarage  4 года назад

      Also why the 5.29s? With all that power being so low in the axles is not really required, especially if you have dual cases you are low enough. If anything the 5.29s themselves will rip apart. Id definitely consider going 4.10s in the v6 third.

    • @SubePelayo928
      @SubePelayo928 4 года назад

      Dirt Garage The gears were installed already when I purchased the 4Runner. The lower gear ratio will also take strain off the T Cases as well. But I do have a set of 4.10’s I can try out.

    Hello,
    You know as well as I do that is not a weak point. As some one else mentioned they can break when loose. But it's the reason they are loose that is important....
    Too much play in those conical bearings. Probably due too not enough maintenance.😉
    If you abuse you'll have to maintain more, that's the offroad rule.
    Cheers from Belgium.

    • @DirtGarage

      So they get loose and break? Sounds like a weak point to me! As I mentioned I tightened them up night before the the day they broke. That's why you can buy upgraded parts to get away from this weak point.

      @@DirtGarage I never had bolts breaking off. On 35 " wheels, lots of bearings worn out(upgrades last longer indeed) lots of spacers removed to adjust play. Even one steering arm ripped off due to pilot error but never a broken bolt. I must be lucky.
