Growing up with both Voltron shows, I can really appreciate your commentary now as an adult and share most of the same views. I love how knowledgeable you both are about the history, mythology etc. Great job guys. Love the show.

The Star Wars vs Star Trek analogy was brilliant! And it explains why I like BOTH Voltrons.
I always like both Start Wars and Star Trek, and could never understand why people fought over them.
I used to tell people to just imagine that both took place in the same existence, and that the only difference
was that Star Trek took place in our galaxy, while Star Trek took place in a "galaxy far far away"
So yes, if you look at it like I did, it's easy to see why I liked both Voltrons. To me it was just two different shows,
that took place in the same universe.
Oh, and one quick Power Rangers story... Up on my toy shelf, among all my old G1 Transformers, I still have my
old Matchbox die cast lion VoltronIII (the big one that combines) Well one day my 8 year old my nephew was
asking me about it, So I said "Do you know who that is?" and he said "its a Zord" and I said "No, that's Voltron"
and he just looked at me, all sure of himself, and replied "NO, THAT'S POWER RANGERS, IT IS A ZORD!!!"
Needless to say, my heart just sank that day.

In addition to the new Lion Voltron episodes, there was also a TV movie commissioned by WEP where the Lion and Vehicle Voltrons joined forces. It was released on DVD. Strangely, on the DVD they left in the commercial breaks: not the actual commercials, but black screens with no audio where the TV station was supposed put in commercials.

The Golion opening theme may come across as simple math: "one plus one plus one..." but I've seen it as clever. These are pilots who, through much of the series must find ways of putting their own egos aside (much like GoLion before the Goddess split him up). It emphasizes one pilot plus another pilot, plus another make a powerful team in the form of this GoLion.

Great panel guys! As someone who's always preferred the original Beast King GoLion and the Japanese shows in general this was a treat! :) I had known about Voltron for years but being in the UK back in the day it wasn't very easy to see it. When I started getting more into mecha anime over the last 5 years or so I had heard of how the original show was much more darker and when I saw it, being more familiar with tropes and themes from many other similar shows, I instantly liked it alot more than Voltron. There's many underlying complexities sometimes in mecha that just aren't picked up, especially when the show is adapted for the western market. Nonetheless, Beast King GoLion is a great show! :)

I still believe that Beast King GoLion can benefit from having an uncut dub. That way, people who love Voltron can still watch Voltron, but can also enjoy the original version translated and uncensored.

The TV station in my area didn't replace Lion Force with Vehicle Force after the lions ran through their episodes. Once the Lion Force run was complete, they just went into reruns. At that point, the station began airing Vehicle Force Voltron in the mornings before school, while the Lion Force continued to be shown after school.

I have still have the LJN motorized lions from when I was a kid. I also have a rerelease from 1997 of the original lion Voltron toy. (This was probably a tie in to that CG show.) IIRC, the '97 one was given to me by my brother who just bought it for the weapons that his original one was lacking.
The '97 one isn't quite colored correctly, though. E.g., Voltron's face is black instead of blue.

One more thing i didn't hear you mention about the Matchbox lion Voltron was that not only did they strip the toy of weapons, missiles, sword, they went a step further and removed the springs in all the launchers so there was no chance of you finding a projectile from another toy and use them.

While I fully admit I'm really only a fan of Legendary Defender (the reboot), it's interesting to learn the history behind the old series and how it was adapted in the US.
Now, I have a hunch that in the roboot the Garrison might know more about the aliens then they let on, maybe even trying to make an alliance with the Galra (Druil). Also, I really hope Lotor and some of the other older Voltron characters come back in the new one. I really hope that Shiro doesn't die in the new one.
27:04 This is kinda funny in hindsight considering the Legendary Defender series that came out this year and the Power Ranger reboot movie coming out next year.

While Super Sentai predates Golion, the design of the Daizyujin from Zyuranger (the Dino Megazord from MMPR) was definitely inspired by Golion. Tsuyoshi Nonaka (the costume/mecha designer of Zyuranger) admitted as much in a Toei site years ago.

From Santiago de Chile, congratulations for such an interesting panel of "Voltron". Here in Chile the TV networks show many of the shows you talk in your conference but not "Voltron"... although at the eighties you could find some of it's toys at very high price (something that you could find in the US for US$10 you could find them here for US$30 or US$50) but the show was never shown by any TV station... that I can remember now. For many years I though that Voltron was a comic and it wasn't until the mid 90's when I first came to Europe I could discovered that it was a TV show when I discovered the VHS and Laserdisc. Between 1995 and 1998 there was a TV show called "Maldita Sea" ("Dammit" in English) show some sequences and with the development of the DVD, Blu-Ray and Internet we have the possibility for the first time to see what "Voltron" was really about. Thank you for all the information and I wish that one day you could come to Chile to make one of your conferences.

Did you explain how the name "Voltron" came about? (I thought I heard you mention in this or part 1). Or is it "unknown" but likely based on American syndicator taking "volt" (as in an electric volt) and "tron" (as in electron).

Great panel! I love the reactions in the room when you showed the Golion and Albegas clips. And the Star Wars/Star Trek, Original Trek/Next Gen analogies actually do make sense. I do have problems with Lion Force though, and maybe it's just me as an artist but I really didn't like the animation. The designs were OK, the story and characters were OK but for some reason I can't get around the quality of the animation.

I don't remember who made it. But I remember getting Voltron from Meijer when I was a kid. It had all the weapons for the lions, shot missiles, had the sword and shield, and had parts on the lions that opened for the missiles. It was cheaper then the other Voltron that my friends had. I remember still wanting the one without all the stuff, Meijer had both of them at the time. When I told one friend of mine about it he said "oh you got the knock off Voltron".
