Great material! The death of Saturday morning cartoons is a shame. Though, I suppose, were I a kid today, I'd be more happy with being able to watch cartoons anytime I wanted... do you remember the desert that Saturday TV became around 10:30 AM? On the other hand... we had less reason to sit around "glued to the box" all day... by 11 AM on Saturday, I didn't need mom to tell me to the turn the TV off...
Here in Italy we saw the original japanese GoLion version (first) and later the americanized Voltron (a few years later)...I recall there was one episode where the invading aliens were celebrating the conquest of a planet by having their most skilled troopers have a contest about who could decapitate most natives in a set time...the irksome thing was that I then discovered invading Japanese soldiers did the exact same thing in China during the late 30s...so perhaps it was a way to exorcise their past misdeeds...
It's funny, because I always used to bring up the fact that Voltron was really violent compared to other cartoons back in the day. Even when I was young, I would turn to my brother all confused after a monster ate people and we be like, "are they allowed to show that?"
I loved both versions. When I showed Voltron to my seven year old, he saw one episode and said it was stupid because it took far to long for the lions to form Voltron...which was plenty of time for a Robeast to destroy them all.
Hey, glad you mentioned Mazinger Z. He was huge in Latin America. The creator (Go Nagai) also made Devilman which was very twisted. I never got into Voltron, but I enjoyed this episode. Great Work !
+sonic360 I have heard about Devilman recently ( also, a cross over with Kamen Rider/Super Sentai Creator most well know work Cyborg 009?!!! ) Gatchaman was also popular in latin america ( I remember some of it, too bad most of this shows are only available on DVD these days )
Oh my watching this again, I think the new Netflix Voltron might be setting up an even creepier turn around Lothor. (Yeah what could make a derranged maniac having an oedipal complex over the princess because she looks like his dead mother? Think Star Wars!) Also for those that haven't checked it out yet, it does draw more from GoLion than you would think. For example it is Altea, not Aris. The Princess is Altean etc.
I just realized how lucky I were to watch Voltron Latinamerican-Spanish dubbed! At least I hear male and female voices all the time, mostly of the actors that dubbed very well all the movies.
Um, Mazinger Z isn't a Super Sentai - its a Super Robot. Sentai refers to "battle team", so if you really want to talk original Sentai, its "Secret Battle Team Gorangers" from Toei back in the early 70's, AKA "Himitsu Sentai Gorenja"
You ruined a lot of people's childhood that day haha! I like that you mentioned Gatchaman, it was one of my earliest favorite shows and when I was working on the comic books I was surprised to know it has been released in the US several different times in various levels of accuracy to the original show (Battle of the Planets, G-Force, Eagle Riders)
Wilson Tortosa Eagle Riders was not based on the original Gatchaman but a repackaged version of Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter. But yeah, same idea applies. The original uncut, subbed versions are now licensed by Sentai Filmworks but do not contain the Eagle Riders dub.
I have to be honest, the first time I heard the intro to Voltron I thought it was the actor that played Decker from A-team that did the introduction narration
u should have ur own tv network ,love the videos from u guys ,by the way im ready for the next video thanks for all the hard work if u guys ever visit california please let us know
I don't think Voltron came out in my market either. At least I don't remember seeing it on TV. I remember seeing it by renting the first 5 episode "movie" from a video rental store. Great video by the way!
I knew Go Lion was significantly different based on your prior episodes, but...I..don't have words to describe my shock. I was going to make a Heavy Metal comparison, but I'm not sure if that would be proper.
Brave Shiragane Dies.... This remembers me of the last week preview of Kamen Rider Drive Chase Dies?....and then he died in this week episode :'D ......NO SPOILERS (?) Also, Cuba is the land of Mecha Animes ( got a lot of DVD from Mecha series from there in Hig Quality :'D )
This first Super-Robot is Astro-Boy created in the 50´s, later on the first Super Robot with a driver in it, is Mazinger Z created in September 1972 as a Japanese comic, Tranzor Z or Mazinger Z came to America in 1981 first in the South American Country named Chile, and arrived in North America in 1984, Robotech and Voltron go-lions came years latersuccess!
Not sure if this is covered in part 2 but I remember the first time they form Voltron in the show you can clearly hear Keith say Go lion. Was this intentional, a flub or was the voice actor trying to give a nod to the source material?
I loved watching Voltron on Boomerang when I was in the fifth grade. I am curious to watch Beast King GoLion, as it’s the original, uncut version of Voltron. So I’ve heard others talk and I thought because the Netflix reboot made the series popular again, is there any chance they’ll release an uncut dub of the series?

RetroBlasting thank you, dude.

It’s an Ani-Mashup!!!!
How can you do a Voltron panel without Jeremy Corray? Weird.
+awkenney A) He is no longer with WEP. B) He wasn't at DragonCon.
that what became pidge as girl not boy lol in the new voltron ld
Not to spoil anything, but the new Voltron series does answer the Pidge question. And does so perfectly. It makes sense.
SuperRedarmy123 I actually really like how Pidge has no identified gender!
