I remember the Voltron Power Hour, on WTXX, which had the Lion Force and the Vehicle Force episodes back to back. In 1985, even though I was 16 years old, this was all kinds of awesome. Yes, the episodes were simpler in Lion Force, and the plot darker, more ponderous and overarching in the Vehicle Force, but the difference between them only made both good in my opinion.
Combine that with an hour of Robotech on WSBK from 4 to 5pm, and I was all kinds of happy.

As to why there is only one Vehicle Voltron, and no others were built, was partially addressed in the show. During the 21st episode, 'Meanwhile Back at Galaxy Garrison,' they mention that the doctor that built Vehicle Voltron made many undocumented adjustments and which they had no been to replicate. They show another prototype Voltron which fails during testing. While this is a fairly weak explanation, the fact we got any explanation at all is impressive.
    Nice review btw. Great work.

I remember feeling a little confused when I saw the vehicle Voltron on t.v. for the first time. If I recall correctly (and it's been at least 30 years now), the Lion Force Voltron was on the episode of the previous day ( I remember the Lion Force having some sort of epilogue laying on the grass on a hill or something). I don't remember not liking the vehicle Voltron, just sort of feeling "well..okay" about it. My guess is, that the folks making the show already knew that kids associated Peter Cullen with vehicles because of The Transformers, and thought he'd be a good voice actor for Hawkins so children could be okay with the transition.
As for the angle of the well armed exploration fleet, the starship Enterprise was first and foremost an exploration vessel that at times was seen as the invader, and only opened fire when they had to.So, I see a parallel between the Galaxy Alliance and the Federation.

+Robert Finnerty In the original Dairugger XV show they were actually part of a planetary alliance military combat fleet charting the whole galaxy, not just explorers.

I can answer two of your questions. They are 'blink and you miss them' answers that are found in the dialogue.
The 5 minute energy matter was addressed in an episode where the Drules attack Earth, and they find Voltron's energy source is damaged and needs to be modified. So Voltron has to sit out the Earth invasion while another fleet drives the Drules off.
Second, they mention they tried to make more Voltrons at one time using the creator's original plans. But there were secret adaptations only the creator knew, and the knowledge of those he took with him to his grave. So Vehicle Voltron comes off more like the SDF-1 from Robotech. They know enough to operate it, but not how it completely works.

I was a bit confused as I watched Lion Force, wondering what Vehicle Force (we always called it Conehead) was all about before the Lion Force finished and the Vehicle series started, and I said, ”OK, now the other other one.” I too remember seeing Volton II in stores and wondered why there was no series.

Vehicle Voltron was the one I preferred, then and now. Having grown up in a world where clueless leaders behind the lines made decisions based on politics, rather than on what's right (or what would help win/end the war,) it seemed more realistic in tone.
The Lion series seemed, well, kinda childish.
I wouldn't get to see depth in an animated series like this again until I got into Robotech (novels, then Japanimation,) and years later with Gundam Wing.
I'm afraid the Lion series left me cold, and was, in retrospect, a forerunner of the dumbed down SFTV to come...

Great look at Vechile Voltron Mike. First, I got to say at the end w/ the bloopers have you & Melinda thought of putting out a blooper reel? :) Just a thought. Now I was one of the fans who liked this Voltron more than the lion, and took alot of crap back then. I remember also the local stations switched right from lion to vehciles too, but this series made more sense to me. I think partly because I'm a Treker, (not a Trekie those guys are NUTS) The whole idea of space exploration & enviormental issues made sense, musch like Starfleet and the Federation. Also I think the writing was better here and was similar to the writing we had on DS9, especially when the war w/ the Dominion & Cardasia began. One thing I hope you guys will mention/get into is the crossover movie w/ both Voltrons combining the teams. A few years ago I read this essay online at a serious Voltron site about the teams seemed to side with Trek or Wars, w/ Lions representing the mysticism of Star Wars & the exploration, the more optomistic nature of Star Trek. Also I recall a theroy in this essay the writer had which made sense story wise; King Randor had created (Lion) Voltron to protect his planet, then after become allies with Galaxy Garrison the leaders their asked him to help construct a 2nd Voltron for space exploration. Now on the one hand I agree 15 members was a lot and the writing did lose something at times. Which is the universal problem with cartoons of the era. First I dont think anyone back then imagined folks like us would be discussing / let alone collecting & seriously discussing issues like these 20-30 yrs later, so things like cannon, rules, time lines wouldn't matter to them back then.Nowadays its another matter.

I think it was wrong for the production company to combine Golion and Dairugger as "one" Voltron cartoon. Each was made in different era. Golion was one of the last giant super robot animations like Mazinger or Combattler V (Shogun Warrior), and kids at the time wanted something more. Shows like Dairugger, Ideon, Goshogun and Dancouga were representatives of the transitions from giant robots to "real robots" genre like Gundam. These giant robot anime soon died out, at least until late 80's when Gunbuster came out. However, I long for the days when they come back. There are just too many hard-to-understand animation out there these days. Simple plot of giant robot fighting giant beast would be a good thing to watch after a long work day!

In NY VV was on weekday Morning [when kids were getting ready for school] while LV would be on weekday Afternoons [when kids would be home] so VV was handicapped right out of the gate. I think VV would have fared alot better if it debuted in the 90s or early 2000s aka when cartoons got smarter an deeper. It was ahead of it time in a sense. LV was the typical 80s cartoon. The Good guys and Bad guys are clearly defined, The villains start off as threats but gradually over time become more comedy relief than actual threats [Let's be honest Zarkon, Lotor and Haggar are more remembered for their quips to each other than anything they did to the Lion force] and the Good guys always won. The VV series had that bit of grey where the won and lost at the same time. Ex. The defeated the Robeast but the battle took such a toll on the Planet that it either became inhospitable or it blew up.
I'm glad you noticed the Samurai look to VV as well. That's what gravitated me more to VV than anything else. I grew up watching Kung-Fu and Samurai films with my Dad so that's why VV appealed to me more. The Barbarian look of LV didn't appeal to me probably because Conan, Thundarr, He-Man and Mightor had made the Barbarian concept a bit of been there done that.

I said two Voltrons also. I got the vehicle version for X-Mas as a kid, and was confused because I was watching the Lion version. Mine's missing the front chest jet, rotor blades on one copter, and a couple little wings broken on the head jet. But I still got it. I found out that my brother suggested to my parents, at the time, to get it because the leader was named Jeff. Which was my name. On my b-day, I got a black lion (no figures-always used GIJoes to pilot it), but never got the other lions to complete a full lion force. Voltron 2 didn't have a Voltron like look, so I wrote that off and forgot about it all together.

I always thought that the "Ancient Secret" meant the technology to assemble a giant robot not Voltron himself - "of how to assemble Voltron". Having no idea about the proposed third installment, I envisioned the "modern" Vehicle Voltron copied the "ancient" Lion Voltron's ability to combin. It implied that combination may be lost technology.

A friend of mine had the toys of Vehicle Voltron and Lion Voltron, and we thought up some interesting theories why they were called I and III respectively. I'm coming back to revisit this, after burning my way through DaiRugger on Bandai Spirits' channel. Never saw the Voltron version of the show, but I have IMMENSELY enjoyed AFDRXV. Definitely very un-Voltron, & completely agree that the strength of this show is the villains. I was wondering just how they had managed to make a Voltron out of this.
More to the point, though, I find the aloof attitudes and arrogance of the leadership of BOTH sides to be distressing and relevant to our own times. The DaiRugger crew & the Galveston "villains" are just middlemen. The way they end up relating to each other as soldiers is kinda wow.
I don't know if I would call this "grey," but certainly more "realistic" when I compare it to the world around me.
Overall, it sounds like the Voltron adaptation is more faithful to the source material than LionForce was; your assessments are pretty well spot-on.
And I think Teles is my new favorite cartoon character.

They do explain why Vehicle Voltron can only do its thing for 5 minutes; It has a human made nuclear battery that gets drained. The construct itself was based on the magical notion of lion voltron (storyline) and so could not be replicated.

It's been a long time since I watched this, so I could be wrong. If so please disregard.
I think it was mentioned in an episode of the U.S. version, vehicle Voltron was built by Earth Forces, based upon the lion Voltron. This explains why they never were around to help the Lion Force originally.
The vehicle Voltron was actually the second attempt and was still in the experimental phase, hence the limitations. The prototype had failed and was destroyed prior. Also, the vehicle Voltron was supposed to have autopilot backup in case of injury. The drawback to this, was that it was very limited and only designed for the loss of one pilot at a time. Again, for some reason, I recall an episode where the pilot of the plane was not able to fly and they used the autopilot function.
Or this could be my fan hand waving explanation.

How many points do we get for guessing IV Voltrons, counting Daltanious, the one that got away due to Americans tendency to shout loudly and slowly at foreigners on the phone "THE ONE WITH THE LION(s)!" Just think of him as the Pete Best of Voltron.

I actually like the Vehicle Voltron better. Back in the 80, we used to have a local shop, run by some old Asian dude. He sold the original Japanese versions of Voltron, Transformers and many other toys. Some of the package art was really cool.

Do you think they might a Vehicle Voltron for the new Netflix series? Maybe as a man-made version of the traditional Lion Force version? It's not far-fetched, I think the recent comics had a serious backstory.

I find it Ironic that was you are saying is the problem, a story were it hard to get behind the invaders make it a difficult sell to American audience, where the Macross fans say that they changing of the base plot of that show for an American audience was bad. Macorss was about group fighting over how had the best "culture", something that should be rather alien to a multi cultural society such as United States.
Lastly, is it just me, or were the Canadians from Star Trek TNG appear to be based on the Drule Empire?

Robotech has recently been taking a massive bashing because of a number of legal issues, that appear to be far more from Tosnoko fault, Harmony Gold is being villinized for. There are a number of "macross" fans that act like a Anime Antifa, attacking Robotech, HG, and any fans of the show calling them everything including Hilter, for perfecting the alternation make to macross for an American audience. The story of Macross is basically as if The U.S. and England went to war over who is the most like The Roman Republic.

This is actually a better video then I thought it would be. I loved Vehicle Voltron much more then the Lion as I thought the latter was too repetitive, but the point outs to the former's are well deserved.
I remember salivating when I heard Dairugger XV was being put out on DVD, but I never got more then the first set as it bored me to tears. The music was so blah compered to the action-orientated score they had on the American version.
And I love what you said about how the Druel's could have been the who story in Dairugger with the virtual collage of plot lines going on with them.
    Can't wait for part 2.

The Drule remind me a lot of the Principality of Zeon from Mobile Suit Gundam. In fact, there are a lot of things about this show that you guys have mentioned that remind me of Mobile Suit Gundam, like the grey morality stuff, and all of the politics. It kind of makes me want to watch this show despite its flaws.
