Michael revisits a distant memory with Silverhawks in one of RetroBlasting's first video features from 2013! Now in its fourth attempt to return to RUclips!
#RetroBlasting #Silverhawks #RankinBass
The destruction of Planet of the Mimes as recounted in The Journal of the Whills:
Luke: Ben, what’s wrong?
Ben: it’s as if a million souls suddenly cried out, without making a sound, as if suddenly silenced.
....this all makes much more sense now!
The Thundercats were awesome as were the Silverhawks!
Nah, Silverhawks totally sucked because they didn't follow the laws of physics and weren't scientifically accurate like the Thundercats were.
The fans.
I look at Thundercats now and find it terrible. It just goes to show the power of good marketing and a catchy theme song.
There were better toy lines and shows that were cancelled in its place.
Love it, really love it, indeed, but i agree with the flaws that he points
@@InvaderofSpace did u know then when u were 5yrs old
Man ... I'll admit that Silverhawks is silly ... but so was most everything on TV in the 80s. I think the animation was far ahead of many of the contemporary shows of the time. You might be coming down a little hard on this one.
Agree
Me too.
You know what I mean
Had some good animation, though.
I have a feeling that whoever wrote Silverhawks must have read ROM, Spaceknight. It's also about a group of people who give up their human bodies to become mechanical soldiers in order to save their planet from invasion. They also share a very similar look.
ROM came first.
@@jackofallclaws6672 Yes.
If the silverhawks program was real i would volunteer.
I've always loved the design of their helmets. Especially when they cover their face after swiping their hand down.
Don’t hold back, Michael, tell us how you really felt about this show!
Hotwing in Latinamerica was called "Indomito" which basically means Indomitable, then renamed into Sortilego which is akin to "Sorcerer"in English, probably because he always performed some magic tricks.
In my head canon, the Silverhawks feature prominently in the third season of 2008 Thundercats. They were a disgraced order of Avian knights more barberic than their elitist brethren. But they were on good terms with the Tigersharks who possessed the last stone.
I hope you're joking about sexy female anime characters being ogled. And what's wrong with Panthero? I thought he was pretty cool.
I HOPE he was joking cuz his statement about her being the only one "ogled" by the camera is immediately followed by a clip of a male silver hawk being "ogled" then the cyborg detective says "pretty slick" AND Yeah man, Panthro was one of the most developed characters ON thundercats. He was super smart and strong and calm and cool. He was a master strategist AND a genius engineer. LionO totally looked up to him as a mentor. I have NO idea where "racist" comes into it at ALL. "It's not Shakespeare and this character seems like he may be black so i'll just call it racist" -- it seems more like the retroblasting guy is racist to me. Maybe he thinks marvel's "black panther" is racist to? :(
@@ATHENA4422 Indeed, Panthro was a really good develop character, also yws, may think he mention are true, but the show was fun to watch, at diference of well one anime that i remember, call starship operator, that was good and have good tense episode, but there were moments you get bored, in silverhawk it was fun, really fun for a child and even now as an adult i love the episode.
Panthro is a great character. He was skilled in martial arts and mechanical engineering. He was my favorite Thundercat.
As an eight-year-old, I very much appreciated that panning shot of Steelheart in the intro.
No gravity in space!? How you think planets and moons stay in orbit
lol smart ass.
The only Silverhaks I had growing up was Steelheart. My mom threw her away. I now have my wife's childhood collection of Silverhwks on display, consisting of nearly all of them... but no Steelheart.
Sometimes it's not about how good the show was it's about the warm fuzzies it leaves you with later in life.
Silver hawks. Honestly one of the best ideas and coolest looking designs. Done fairly horribly in my opinion. I’d love to see new silver hawks figures.
I've considered some different story concepts that would work nicely, what's you're idea for the ideal Silver Hawks show ?
Another good idea implemented poorly.
when i was young silverhawks were my shit classic looking to deep in a kids cartoon
how old are you again? never forget you loved it when you're still a kid
Still have all my silverhawk figurines. They are awesome toys
When this popped up in my notifications I shut down the video I was watching. Love this show
I was 4 when silver hawks came out lol. I remember I had the stickers.
I had the Silverhawks comic books and the sticker book about the origin story. Fun times.
This was really good. I was skeptical at the beginning but you won me over. Good stuff!
So Stargazer looks like Locutus, who was formerly captain of the USS Stargazer
dude by "messed up" you must mean "fuckin' rad" if I could volunteer to be a spacefaring cyborg with shoulder lasers I'd jump on that shit in a heartbeat
You were very harsh on this one, when I was a kid I loved the silver hawks, the last thing I would thought about is the reality of the show, of course now that you are an adult you can ask yourself those kind of things... my advise, don't overthink the cartoons you watched when you were a kid because all will have issues.
I remember Silverhawks also. What bugged me about these ensemble hero shows was when a few characters weren't in the episode with no explanation. But yeah, I think I remember one scene but no sound with it.
Here in support of You Know What I Mean what a legend 😍
There has to be a certain level of suspension of disbelief when it comes to fiction. Without this, all shows would be subject to the same levels of cynicism. Which would reduce everything to being unwatchable.
However.....though I haven’t watched all of Silverhawks, I’m well aware that Silverhawks had several issues. It was mentioned several times in “Hear the Roar” when brought up by staff. It would’ve done better to have a more centralized and on-going plot.
And to those upset about Michael’s statement at the beginning about the changing process: I think it’s pretty clear that one of his bigger issues with it is how it’s so casually dealt with while having no world building concerning WHY it would be.
As far as “ogled” by the camera....he seems to be having some tongue-in-cheek fun about it.
Far as “Hot Wings” go......I’ve had a few Black friends that have brought him up when we’ve discussed this stuff. Not usually positively either. As opposed to Panthro, who tends to be universally loved by, well, everyone.
While I disagree with Michael on many things in his ThunderCats review (R.I.P.), his criticisms of Silverhawks seems to be pretty valid. Even in “a kid’s show”, internal show mechanics must be maintained.
LioConvoy's Reviews Mike won't give you any love well I will thumbs up brother
@@ghostbusterguy20011 Appreciated, but Michael and I actually get along pretty well. We don't agree on some things, but he's a great guy!
LioConvoy's Reviews he definitely is a great dude I love his review's for the most part just hate his thundercats silver Hawks and snake mountain review's although I can see his point would it have killed them to give Skeletor his throne at least
Classic Intro of All Time
_"This is not a toy."_
classic
Silverhawks is a forgotten cartoon/toyline in the 80's by most people.
I agree, Homeworld of the mimes would make an excellent Death Star target;-)
There's actually a Planet of the Mimes in every universe. But it's always the first planet to be destroyed. That's why nobody knows about it.
I can't argue that logic;-p @@Kj16V
THANK YOU! I am glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the total lack of physics in "Silver Hawks."
Good stuff my friends, keep pumping this shit out!!!
In my opinion the Silverhawks remind me of gatchaman ( battle of the planets) characters
Absolutely. It looks like a western take on the idea.
I thought the same thing years ago.
Gatchaman was cooler.
SilverHawks was an homage to Gatchaman /G-Force! It's influence is obvious.
Hey RetroBlasting, just wanted to suggest that you guys take a look at the Star Wars Action Fleet line. They were focused on small hand sized ships and each ship came with two figures. They also had playsets and figure packs. It was a really neat and well rounded line for a long time. It finally started falling apart at episode one. They reduced the included figures to one and started dropping the quality. Was really sad when the line slowly faded.
I love the videos man. Makes me really. Mob these cartoons got to go back and watch us complete sherries now. Found forget awesome
Your hate of the Silverhawks is exceptionally tangible;-)
When you get to Molecular and call him a guy made out of balls, I always chuckle
This is the fourth attempt and so I´ll say this for the FOURTH time: Hey Warner Bros., vids like these help keep interest in this product alive. That means more money in YOUR pockets. Chill out and let Retroblasting do their thing. All the comments and ranting is all in good fun.
Well.. at least one of the villains had balls.....
Silverhawks could take place in a parallele dimension where space black matter is replaced by oxygen.
Well, this just means its time to bingewatch RB all over again!
The Angry Video Game Nerd would be proud...
Last Unicorn was a grea Movie... nice voiceacting by christopher lee.
That wasn't even his best quality. Story goes when the voice-acting was in actual production, Lee brought in an actual copy of "The Last Unicorn" and asked some of the script writers to include certain quotes directed from the book (he had that kind of pull). Learning this and given the number of "celebrities" who do voice work for properties they know little about because "I want to do something for my children = phone it in" gave me more respect for Lee than I had prior to learning about the story.
I don''t remember silverhawks but I take your word on it. I would like to see a Battle of the Planets review from 1978.
2:49 "We will create a superior race" lol, too funny :)
Have you seen the live action Silverhawks made in China with that famous female martial arts stars that was in the James Bond movie with Pierce Brosnan? You know what might be kinda cool? Rankin/Bass doing a stop motion superhero animation.
I can't wait to see the Bionic 6 reviews and possibly C.O.Ps
This was excellent!
The Robocop reboot look like a updated Silverhawks theme.
The funny thing is that I remember Bluegrass the most because he was the most ridiculous! A literal space cowboy and a musical one at that! Roy Rogers would have loved him! Too bad he never guested on BLACKSTAR!
We always "solve" the intergalactic and completely understandable body sacrificing, space detectives. Stay safe everyone!
You are crazy, Silver Hawks was a fun show. Not as good as Thundercats, but good. I forgot about Tigger Sharks
A show so bad, yet so good, that it deserves a reboot in order to get it right the second time around.
It was fine the first time. No one wants a shitty reboot where it's all "dark and edgy" to appeal to a bunch of 35 year olds like they did with MOTU and Thundercats, which were immediately cancelled
I actually liked those reboots, and that Thundercats reboot was good enough to deserve a second season but Cartoon Network chose not to order more episodes because they didn't understand their target audience or what timeslot to put the show in. Looks like you are speaking for yourself yet again.
@@matthewhudson7883 They didn't sell enough toys. That's why the Thundercats reboot was canceled.
The best thing about the cartoon WAS the Mob. Watching it as an adult, like when I was a kid, they aren't the most developed, serious threats that are expected, but the writers and designers of the characters put far more into them than most bad guys of other toylines at the time, most of whom were bungling cretins or faceless troop builders. Just my opinion.
I admit it has flaws but I liked this show.
Is WB really that dense in the fact that your episode stands a good chance of generating interest in a LONG dead franchise??
If you could give me a cyborg body so I could live forever and explore the universe, I'd volunteer right away.
I liked the thundercats , but only remember see this cartoon an couple times.
This is one of my favorite of your reviews. I was looking for it last month to rewatch it and was sad it had been taken down. Glad to see it again, albeit in an altered form. Stupid Warner Bros! Hope to someday get to rewatch the original Thundercats review. :)
@ 3:30 I think what is most frustrating (in retrospect) is that these five volunteer to be cyborgs to become...cops for another galaxy?!?
I mean, if they had volunteered to save Earth that could give them some kind of tragic hero aspect, but instead they are sacrificing themselves to protect strangers and Earth isn't even a part of their 'jurisdiction'. Shucks, maybe do an episode where Mon*Starr tries to send a super weapon to destroy Earth for some kind of "They'll never know the sacrifices we made to save them back home!" kind of scene.
Actually the storyline of the 1st Robocop clearly state when a Detroit police officer joins the force, they sign a waiver that states if they die in the line of battle, OCP can do anything they want with their bodies. Stated by OCP Executive Johnson...
Hardware is a Goblin from The Hobbit, confirming that Silverhawks takes place in the future of Tolkiens Middle Earth
I loved the Silverhawks as a kid, and watching them as an adult, I still like the campy setting and the unique focus on the villains, who are arguably better developed than the heroes. That being said, I still enjoy Michael's rants and tearing down of the show, and can appreciate his take, even if I don't agree with it. To nerd rage against someone disagreeing with you on something just isn't my thing
Interesting fact ...you don't need wings to fly in space.
So you are disturbed by the human experiments in Silverhawks... but would like to see the planet of Mimes destroyed i.e. genocide? Just because you don't like their method of communication? Isn't that more disturbing?
Okay... so you're a Star Wars fan...and George Lucas pisses you off MORE than the freakin' DMV?!?!?
The intro animation was amazing, I remember watching the intro and then getting kinda bored
You guys are by far my favorite RUclips channel
Panthro was racist? Man as a kid Panthro was the man. I mean he was by far the favorite Thundercat in my neighborhood and I won't lie it may have been because we had next to no Black heroes in action shows, I guess Roadblock but he just rhymed and the other Joes bareky had screen time. Panthro was tough and had more personality than the rest of cats. Maybe I was just happy to have any non comedic representation at all.
How about a review of Galaxy Rangers? I remember it having a similar premise and an astonishing intro.
lol I just received my season 1 Silverhawks! I never seen the show in the 80s, I remember the toys, and one of my friends had the big silver bird toy. Not sure which figures he had. I cannot wait to start watching the show! But Ill watch it later, work first then fun. lol have few other series not even open but save up for raining day. Respect your view! Keep up the great work!
There's no air in space, wings will do you no good.
Omg Michael! This video was hilarious!
Completely legitimate criticism but for some reason I liked the show back in the day
Feels like I watched this each of three returns
I remember Silverhawks and Thundercats running back to back on WFFT here in Ft Wayne when I was a kid....but that's all I remember. The shows themselves weren't so memorable.
I actually hope this show gets the par for the course $300 million dark & gritty blockbuster treatment just so I can hear Russell Crowe and/or Morgan Freeman say "planet of the mimes" with a straight face.
The lead character in Silver Hawks looks like a character from the Terry Gilliam film Brazil.
So... What I'm hearing is... If I want to watch a show about bird themed superhuman crime fighters, i should stick with Gatchaman.
I thought this seemed familiar. Too bad with the video pulls. I wonder if a human even monitors what's happening.
I love this channel!
everybody needs to start suing these companies that file invalid/false dmca claims, since, fair use is still a thing, no matter how much the oligarchy wishes it would go the fuck away.
Siulverhawks? more like poor mans G-Force
Hi! I heard last July that a new Silverhawks reboot will soon be in the making! :3
Minty Comic Arts doesn't seem to have these problems, who's the hater. You are completely within fair use.
I still have my silverhawks lunchpail, with the thermos. I'm glad you didn't ruin the show when I was 9.
Totally like G-Force.
I watch most cartoons religiously until Pirates of Dark Water. I loved that show, I just remember it as my last devoted show.
Thundarr the Barbarian and Galtar and the Golden Lance were my most favorite. I also liked Blackstar, but I only remember the sword, it was split in two- half for our hero, and half was in thd hands of an evil dude. All these shows were from my love of a lightsaber.
I truly believe all 80s cartoon tv writers were high on 80s coke.
Happy Holidays
HAHAHAHAHAHI would never get tired to de this episode!!!
Hey, they were military and they volunteered.. The upside is they become effectively immortal and can travel in space unaided without exterior life support.
Plenty of downsides, but... they did choose it. And there are folks that would. Besides, with the level of tech that allows this in the most nonchalant of fashion, chances are they could go back the other way.
Back up a minute. So the Silver Hawks are regular people who got turned into metal cyborgs right? So essentially they're like the Cybermen or the Borg but with their emotions intact
They learned to fly from Buzz Lightyear.
They should've done a Silverhawks Thundercats crossover. 🙂🙂
Did that in a Dragoncon presentation back in 2016
Wow I'm not going to lie to you after you talkin about silverhawks and bringing up some sound and valid points. That's like when you go back and watch your favorite cartoon as a kid and you realize like wow this show is seriously screwed up what was we thinking is kids
Still love the series no matter how many convoluted issues that it has.
Wait...haven't I seen this video before?
I will tell you a secret: all that nonsense happens because they are cartoons... yes. It is all right.
I smell franchise with multiple universes and trilogies planned for the future
When this show aired my first impression was that this was a bad Gatchaman rip.
As a confirmed clown hater, I hated the Copper Kid too and would have loved to have seen the Planet of The Mimes blown up by the Death Star!
Yet i woke up early to watch before school everyday
Wasn't there a villain (with a Southern drawl) that could stop or turn back time for 5 seconds? I think his name was Timestopper. So not only did the show defy the laws of physics, but the laws of spacetime as well?
I think he was called Timestopper. The ability to suspend all ambient motion and kinetic energy around him for "one Limbo-Minute"
