Lol me too, had the R15 trio myself and last time i remember hitting my driver swing speed at 110 mph and 3 wood at 99 mph so im not sure if its a total bust.
I just finished out the top end of my bag: sim 7.25 weight in the toe (fade monster), ts2 3W set at c1, and ts3 hybrido at 18.25 at c1... all with the same shaft, hzrdus smoke black. Every single club is as good as I can hit them, this shaft is either the perfect one for me in terms of timing, or I’m leaving something on the table with some club... I can work each club both ways, my driving has never been better, launch and spin seem all pretty ideal. Either way, nice vid guys!
Thanks, by the way, for providing video evidence of what I have been telling my fitting customers for more than a decade (I’m a Professional Clubfitter). That is that just because a shaft works great for you in your driver, that same shaft (or shaft profile) won’t necessarily work for you in your fairway woods or hybrids. The golfer should definitely be fitted for each shaft separately, not just assume that a 10 gram heavier version of the driver shaft that works for him (or her) will work in the fairway wood(s).
Yesss! Thank you guys for the answer to my question. I’m glad I could trigger you guys to get this video to help so many people as well as myself. Love the channel, keep up the great work lads!
Recently fit to AV Raw White in driver and AV Raw Blue in fairway wood. Guessing this is the application of the initial discussion of different tip section characteristics for the different shots each head is designed for, yet retaining similar overall profile and feel in both shafts?
Great points gents! I got fitted this past summer for driver and 3 wood, and while TS3 won in both departments, the ideal driver shaft was Smoke Black 6.5 60g while 3 wood was Evenflow White 85X 👍👍👍
Another soothing vid of Matt hitting bombs. Interesting to see the diff in Tip v Non Tip for the 3w. Was thinking the characteristics of what you want out of 3wd would suggest “less of a low spin bomb is best” here and before you can type anything Ian’s summary as usual is on the money.
Penley golf shafts tunes their fairway specific shafts to handle the head weight, been playing them in my driver, 3 wood and hybrid, they are USA made too!
Haven't even gotten into the full video yet, but I feel like I should share this... I work in a pro shop in the UK. My boss (the Pro) doesn't think that people "need to get fit for a 3 wood." It pains me when he says this, because I know that the club fittings being offered just aren't very good unfortunately. Still a longgggg way to go with club fitting.
Another great video...cannot remember that I had the same shaft in driver and fairwaywood....and don’t understand why you should do that because in a clubfitting you test and choose what works best for your game and for me another clubhead and /or shaft worked better than just choose the same head and shaft in fairway and driver. So test and get fitted in what works best for your game and watch TXG videos 😇🤓
Hey guys. Once again great video and topic! I must be the exception though haha. I have a Ping G410 in driver, fwy wood and hybrid. Same shaft in driver and fwy but different in hybrid. Needed more kick to get the hybrid launching right. Keep em coming guys! Again, hands down best channel on RUclips!
I think I got pretty fortunate with my matching set. Have the speedzone driver and 5 wood and love them. The speedzone fairways are excellent and compliment the driver well
Oh and thanks guys, this video came at a PERFECT time. I just ordered the Ping G425 3-wood with a Tour AD IZ 70g Stiff shaft. Wondering if I should get the Tour AD IZ 60g Stiff shaft for my G425 Max driver. Guess I need to get fitted properly for each!
Shortened my Mavrik SZ driver to 43.5 in and had a faster swing speed and better accuracy. Am currently working on Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, Cobra 27 degree fairway wood (6 iron), and a Mavrik women's lite 8 hybrib all at 43.5 in with the same swing weight. Already had the 8h at 42 in with no problems and topping out at about 110mph. Can you imagin a 8h at 115mph? Now that would be nice, we'll see how it works.
Wish I saw this before I ordered a shaft. Been using the 2020 mavrik 3 wood with the Riptide 60s shaft and love how it feels. Been trying to figure out what shaft would be good with driver, been fit twice and both times I was fitted into something that just didn’t work or help consistently. Bought a new riptide shaft to put in the driver, I’ll try it regardless. If it doesn’t work out luckily I only spent $40 on it
For me I was needing low torque in the driver and lower still in the fairway. After trying a lot of shafts at work I landed on the newer UST Proforce V2 6F5 and oddly enough the same shaft but 7F5 in the fairway. I know a lot of people don’t like that shaft but the mid launch with the very stiff tip section just really works for me and helps me combat that right to left miss I can get from time to time. But I was very much expecting to not have the same shaft in each club.
Very valid point - i got fitted and checked against heads / shafts but due to a "lot" slower than Matt s swing speed and power ratio. I got fitted with F9 driver, 3w , 5w and 7w due to the heavier weights that have been able to be added ie low and slowish!!!!💪💪💪👍👍👍🙂🙂🙂
My latest fit was actually full set of woods and the hybrid all tsr2s and all in blueboards (except the hybrid which ended up being a UST lin-q) just 70 gram in woods and 60 in driver
I have matched shafts and matched heads ... Sim and Sim Ti. Love love my set up i would never touch my fairway woods/shafts they will be in my bag for a long time - drivers are always fine to get new
All my sets are completely matching vendor, taylormade, callaway, titliest all my shafts are ventus but black in driver and blue in fairway wood and even blue in driving irons
Question... on Graphite Design Tour AD's website, they always recommend tipping shorter clubs more. 0" tipping for a driver, 0.5" for a 3-wood, 1" for a 5-wood and down. I thought tipping the shaft makes the shaft play stiffer? But what Ian said in the beginning about having a more active tip for a FW versus a driver, seems to be the opposite?
I don’t know if we are on the same wave length but everytime I have an equipment question tXG seems to put out exactly what I’m looking for... and I’m glad I didn’t just buy a Callaway Epic Max 3 wood with GD tour as HD7.... I was just fit into new Epic Max driver with ad HD6 and I’m crushing that combo...300+ yards... I will setup Appt to test some 3woods Individually.... thanks TXG
After watching your videos more and more..I got fit just this year, but it was just for irons and it wasn’t anything like what you guys do..club champion is close to me, I think they’re very detailed like you guys and I’m thinking in two years I’ll get fit again, full bag fitting...then I can see all the analytics and I’ll be more aware of potential questions to ask
This is very interesting and matches what I've found over time. I play a slightly tipped VA Composite Vylyn 65x in my SIM driver but in my SIM 3 wood I prefer a Stiff flex Atmos Patriot 7S untipped. It just makes it easier to launch off the deck. Play the same Patriot in my sim 5 wood as they work well. I will switch out drivers, depending on how I'm hitting it but fairways stay the same. Really interesting.
Tried the same shaft I had in my Rogue 3 wood , in my driver and was spraying it. Felt like a different beast. Have matched my Epic Flash Sub driver with the Epic Flash Sub 3w but this time different shafts with better results
The more I think about this, the less I follow the video. From the video: Driver needs to be more tip stiff to support the cg location of the head right? But alsofrom the video: the fw wood needs to be more tip stiff in order to support the weight. So the question is about how the tip deflection matches per the headweight and cg location. But the test didn't exactly clear this up for me. Many shafts of the same model have slightly different profiles for exactly this reason. On top of that, tipping usually is done in .5" increments from D to 3w to 5w. Take the Graphite Design TP shaft for example. The tip stiffness stays the same from 8x to 7x to 6x, while the mid and handle stiffness gets gradually reduced with the weight. That makes the tip play stiffer in the 6x than the 8x automatically. That being the case, it stands to reason that you could put the shafts straight in to a set without tipping. However, again, the question is exactly how much does the weight factor in vs the cg location? Depending on the weights, you could hypothetically have a 3w tipped an inch while having the 5w put straight in if the 5w were lighter than expected and the 3w were heavier than expected.
I agree, was waiting a long time for this video and I not sure what I learned. If tipping isn't an option, and you're choosing from a couple stock shafts, what exactly was the problem with just getting the same one 10g heavier? Will it be a disaster? or are they implying you might just be leaving something on the table?
Way too much analysis: I got fitted to Fuji Ventos Velcore - Black S-6 it’s a $350; fitted , tip , grip , spun and delivered - $600 . For TM 5. For my M5 3 wood , paid $250 for Fuji Pro 2.5 . Perfect match ! The 2.5 is fairway shaft . The Black on Ventus is low flight . Similar ball flights . I hit my driver rather low , but machine show best ball speed and distance . Take away ; high dollar shafts = low MOI Translation - consistency through minimum club head twist .
I have the sim driver with the diamana 60x and the sim 3 wood with the diamana 70x and i hit them great. never really though of needed a different shaft for them.
I did a similar setup with a diamana ilima 70x. I tipped it 2 inches and put it in the same driver I was hitting d+ limited. It was extremely playable and more forgiving than the d+ where I felt like I really had to button it to get the most from it.
I have always enjoyed softer profiles with my fairway wood and hybrid too. Swing speeds of 120+mph with driver everyone rushes for me to hit the stiffest boardy shafts and I struggle to get them airborne and/or with the feel of them in FW woods/hybrids. What are some other shafts that are stable but have a soft tip section?
I’ve had mixed success going both routes. The two best driver/fairway match ups I’ve ever had were complete opposites in terms of this methodology. In one I had the exact same shaft just tipped a little extra. With the other pairing, the shafts were not even the same brand. Much less the same profile. I’ve also had success with heavier weights of the same shaft in fairways. However, my swing is totally different now than when I had “same shaft” success. I couldn’t even start to use the same shaft in each anymore.
Did you tip the 3w? It would have been nice to check the difference on the 3w like you did for the driver. Of course the shaft should be the same between the driver and 3w, but in different tip points and weight.
there' me with having been fit for a sub zero driver, with a HZRDOUS Smoke - not been fit for 3/5 wood but ordered the same shafts and heads because i wanted matching,.... DOH!
I'm not sure if it was brought up or not but... how much was the 7x shaft tipped in the 3w? Was it tipped the standard amount or was it tipped 2" extra to match the driver shaft? Being that the idea of the video is to match shafts, I think the 3w shaft would need to be tipped extra to really show it. Also, if Matty had hit a few shots with a Blue installed in the 3w it really would have driven the point home. I fail to see anything showing that matching them is a bad idea, but nothing that really shows it's the correct idea either.
Unrelated to video but switching my grips this summer. I love the tour velvet feel with dry hands but my hands get quite sweaty. How are those Lamkin sonars in the rain or with sweat?
I have the exact same shaft, Tensei Blue AV 75 Stiff Flex in the my Epic Flash Driver and Epic Flash 3 wood. I was fitted for my Driver but not the 3 wood. I seem to get on well with both. Although they are the same shaft what differences in construction, other than length will there be?
I’m confused. I know nothing about club fitting. I’ve never been fit. I bought a game improvement set of irons with x stuff shafts. I bought the SIM driver, Max 3wood, and Max hybrid and use the ventus shafts they came with in the S flex cause that’s what my store had available. I have 120+ swing speeds and a naturally high ball flight. Should I be considering the tipped ventus red for a 3 wood?
I got fit Into ventus black 6X in my driver and black 7X in my 3 wood. You think that means the fit was likely not ideal or you think there are some that truly do fit into the same shaft?
Another awesome vid...and I haven’t even watched yet 😀 I have the same shaft in my Sim Max driver and my M6 3wood. For me it was a no brainer to at least test it. For me it was a huge win. But maybe I’m one of those wierdos who’s super sensitive to shaft weight. Thanks as always guys for making a ***ty day tolerable.
Isn’t this already addressed in the profile differences in say a Driver designated ventus blue 6s and a Fairway Designated Ventus Blue 6s? Or is the only difference in the profile between the two the length?
I have different shafts in Driver (hzdrus smoke stiff) than in FW (tensi blue stiff) and am very consistent with these... straight and long, to the point where I am much better at 200 yds and out than I am with the iron game, 200 yards and in. For someone that is better in the long game vs short game, (718 AP2, AMT white) can the iron shafts be a major factor in the inconsistency? Normally I see golfers better with irons, much worse with woods and driver.
Really insightful as always, thanks guys. Interesting point you mention that it's typically more beneficial to have softer tip in the FW shaft - how does that correlate to each OEM suggesting that their shafts be tipped for use in Fairway woods (ie. 1/2" for 3W / 1" for 5W / 1.5" for 7W). Just curious if that is to maintain the stated flex - if so, and if we want softer in FW, why have tipping recommendations for FW shafts?
Interesting vid boys. Not knowing any better I have been fitted into the same shaft in my TM M6 Driver and Cobra SZ 3 wood. Tensei Blue Stiff 60g. I bomb the 3wood (for me as a 22hcp) averaging 230yds but only average 15yds further with the Driver and stuggle with strike a lot more with the Driver. Could that be partly down to the shaft? Should I look at changing the shaft in the Driver?
IS TSi3 Driver and Tsi2 FW a different enough combo? Ventus black 6X in driver (untipped). Still undecided in the FW shaft. Have an Accra TZX475 and Aldila Tour Green 65X sitting around. Also open to ordering Tsi2 with Ventus Blue 7X.
Had the Atmos tour spec 75g x flex fitted into my SIM max and loved it so I brought the same shaft for my SIM driver in 60g s flex and had it tipped 1 inch.. the 3 wood I hit straight or slight draw and driver only a fade... so frustrating!! so any advice would help? and my driving iron is the HZRDUS smoke black.
I wonder how Matty feels going back to his own gear on the course after doing all this testing? How long does it usually take him to readjust back to his own fitted equipment? I know if that was me I would be an absolute mess!
My 3 wood stiff shaft broke and bought a Hzrdus stiff then tipped the heck out of it.. Results didnt change between the two.. Duck hook city with both Funny enough my r9 that always comes back because I can actually hit it has a reg shaft.
One brands stiff is another manufacturers regular so that's important to remember. What works for me would definitely not help most others as I use stiff driver but X flex fw wood. Doesn't make sense to me but if it works it works 😄
Just to prove how off the hook obsessed I am with finding someone, anyone who can give me a bag full of same length, same weight clubs; I have to ask the question of Matty and Ian or anyone...Does anyone know of, or even heard of a custom clubhead shop with mad CNC machine skills who can take a current upper end 3 wood and alter the face angle? In a perfect world I would wind up with a strong, sub zero 3 wood, 19 degree 3 wood, 27 degree 3 wood, 37 degree 3 wood, and a 45 degree pitching wedge 3 wood? Before you choke on your food or drink...look at what Matty did with that 3 wood off the deck...can you envision and entire bag of clubs the exact same length and weight? Same swing every time, all you have to do is learn to hit a 3 wood off the deck and you have a 120mph pitching wedge? Yes, for shorter shots you'd want a second head on a shorter shaft to take you to about 85mph....even on Google I cannot find someone who has done this. Help? Anyone?
If shafts on woods should be fit individually than why would an entire set of irons be fit based on one iron? Is there logistically a way that you could fit an entire set of irons one club at a time, for science (changing shafts only, not loft and lie)?
Until about 5 years ago, that was my average 3-wood distance (with roll-out, I often touched or exceeded 300 yards with 3-wood), and I will be 72 years old in 3 months. Of course, until age 53, I was a ReMax WLD competitor.
I've never watched any of your videos where I have not learned something in regards to equipment differences. Always impressive.
Ian's knowledge and passion for the sport is soooo refreshing!
I regrettably bought the SLDR (driver, 3w, 3h) set after a driver fitting. This video was only 7 years too late :) Nice info gents.
Lol me too, had the R15 trio myself and last time i remember hitting my driver swing speed at 110 mph and 3 wood at 99 mph so im not sure if its a total bust.
Lol still playing my SLDR fairway woods! It's probably time for an upgrade
I know it’s a good day when you see Matty and Ian On your recommended page
Or when you get the video notification 💪
I just finished out the top end of my bag: sim 7.25 weight in the toe (fade monster), ts2 3W set at c1, and ts3 hybrido at 18.25 at c1... all with the same shaft, hzrdus smoke black. Every single club is as good as I can hit them, this shaft is either the perfect one for me in terms of timing, or I’m leaving something on the table with some club... I can work each club both ways, my driving has never been better, launch and spin seem all pretty ideal. Either way, nice vid guys!

Sensational golf knowledge. An absolute pleasure to watch the golf content that you create.Love it. Keep it coming.
Rainy day outside and this nice surprise drops in notifications . :)
All I want for Christmas is a golf lesson from Matty

Way too much analysis:

I don't know much about this. Does that mean you cut 2 inches off the shaft length? Would that give you less distance?

I agree I have a regular flex shaft in my 3W and I love it but couldn’t imagine trying to hit a regular flex driver😂😂
Driver & 3 wood are both Tensie AV blue 65s (I wanted a mid launch) but are tipped slightly differently
Ventus Black - Driver
Blue - FW Wood
Red - Hybrid
I’ve had mixed success going both routes. The two best driver/fairway match ups I’ve ever had were complete opposites in terms of this methodology. Should the gapping from a 3 wood to driver be the same as 5 wood/3 hybrid to 3 wood?
I was surprised that I was fit for my current AD IZ6S in driver but was fitted for Ventus Red in the fairway.
Same line of thinking for fairway wood and hybrid? Thinking Sim Max with Ventus Blue
DOH!
What made you think the blue would be a better fit for the 3 wood? That's a lower launching shaft, is it because the red in the driver was tipped?
I'm not sure if it was brought up or not but... how much was the 7x shaft tipped in the 3w? Was it tipped the standard amount or was it tipped 2" extra to match the driver shaft? Being that the idea of the video is to match shafts, I think the 3w shaft would need to be tipped extra to really show it. Also, if Matty had hit a few shots with a Blue installed in the 3w it really would have driven the point home. I fail to see anything showing that matching them is a bad idea, but nothing that really shows it's the correct idea either.
Can you recommend an affordable high/mid launch shaft that pairs well with the sim ti 3 wood?
Unrelated to video but switching my grips this summer. I love the tour velvet feel with dry hands but my hands get quite sweaty. How are those Lamkin sonars in the rain or with sweat?
Should we match 3 wood and 5 wood shafts? Also should 5 wood shaft weight be heavier than 3 wood?
I have the exact same shaft, Tensei Blue AV 75 Stiff Flex in the my Epic Flash
Driver and Epic Flash 3 wood.
Video idea: sole shape in irons, how much of a difference does it make?
Another awesome vid...and I haven’t even watched yet 😀 I have the same shaft in my Sim Max driver and my M6 3wood. For me it was a no brainer to at least test it. For me it was a huge win. But maybe I’m one of those wierdos who’s super sensitive to shaft weight. Thanks as always guys for making a ***ty day tolerable.
Great information. Would you be more likely to use the same shafts if you just use 3 wood off the tee?
Is it common for smooth swingers to like the red profiles (not just ventus, but atmos, tensei etc)?
Jumped from live 🤣 thx lads!
Same
Interesting vid boys.
Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Jason Day, Colin Morikawa off the top of my head all have matching wood shafts...
I have TSI 3 with haz Rdx x flex in driver . 6 x Fuji black s 3 wood sim and Fuji blue 5 wood s in sim
the real question is use the same weight shaft in 3 wood & 5 wood or would the shorter 5 wood mess things up?
Nice piece of content! 👍
Another good one
Ventus black 6x in driver and ventus black 7x in my 3w. Both sim
I just bought Aldila Tour Green for driver and 5 wood =)
I swing weight match my graphite shafted clubs together and then the same for my steel shafted clubs.
what ball do you use during these tests
Should 3 wood and 5 wood shafts match if I have both in the bag?
I wonder how Matty feels going back to his own gear on the course after doing all this testing? How long does it usually take him to readjust back to his own fitted equipment? I know if that was me I would be an absolute mess!
Best info
Oh oh how do I tell my wife I need to change my fairway .......again lol
My 3 wood stiff shaft broke and bought a Hzrdus stiff then tipped the heck out of it.. Results didnt change between the two.. Duck hook city with both
Funny enough my r9 that always comes back because I can actually hit it has a reg shaft.
One brands stiff is another manufacturers regular so that's important to remember. What works for me would definitely not help most others as I use stiff driver but X flex fw wood. Doesn't make sense to me but if it works it works 😄
You should always go live into a video, and you should set up in the UK by Summer 21 😂? After a good fitting soon
what would you say about having AUTOFLEX in both driver and fairway
I’d give up my pinky toe to be able to hit my driver 300 yards much less my 3 wood. HOLY COW!!! 😮
Help? Anyone?
Is the tipped driver 2" shorter?
Shaft was tipped 2", played at same specs as the other.
Plse set up an outlet in South Africa... we need you 😭
LOL. I asked you about this a couple months ago.
If shafts on woods should be fit individually than why would an entire set of irons be fit based on one iron? Is there logistically a way that you could fit an entire set of irons one club at a time, for science (changing shafts only, not loft and lie)?
what was the tipping on the 7x three wood?
2"
@@neutrino61 Did they say that in the video? They tipped the driver 2" but I didn't hear anything about the 3w.
You get the why. Not the do it this way. that I have run across locally. Great work again.
Doesn't Tiger have the same shaft in his driver, 3 wood, and 5 wood?
Tigers Set up:
Driver: Diamana D+ Whiteboard 60TX
3 Wood: Diamana D+ Whiteboard 70TX
5 Wood: Diamana D+ Whiteboard 80TX
@@ryanlorenzi986 So the same shafts lol just 10 grams heavier
He touched on that. 9:30
Can we talk about the 305 yard 3w off the deck ??? Jeeeeez
Epic 5 o'clock shadow...
I guess I'm the only one that watced this video and thought the numbers and dispersion were totally counter to the argument that was being made...
Imagine playing a match with Matt and to even out a little saying he can't use driver. Just for him to still out drive you with a 3 wood
Casually carrys a 3 wood 280
STUD!
Until about 5 years ago, that was my average 3-wood distance (with roll-out, I often touched or exceeded 300 yards with 3-wood), and I will be 72 years old in 3 months. Of course, until age 53, I was a ReMax WLD competitor.
