    This bike is good for when you reach the age of 60 and older . You get a comfortable seat which is very important when your back isn't what it use to be . The lighter the better . Being able to walk your feet up a steep trail at low speeds is a big plus . Being able to go out and ride some trails and make it back in one piece and not be in pain the next day is priceless .

      @@dwightmartin132 I am also becoming 60 this year... and I am just about to take some hard-earned cash and buy me a brand new xt250.. I don't want to polish chrome, go 100 miles an hour down the highway, or try to move around 1,000 lb motorcycle in my driveway or anywhere else actually, when you're 60 you don't really have to hurry anywhere anyways except to maybe the bathroom lol... I bought my 2017 xt 250 in April this year. Found it on "cycle trader". Dealer was clearing out old new stock. Paid $3800 for a 2017 with zero miles. I'm a 180 lb 5'7" middle aged experienced rider. I have ridden my xt nearly everyday since the purchase. 3000 miles to date. Mostly 10 minute commutes to work with 1 -2 hr joy rides to my favorite fishing holes on the weekends. Adds to the bike so far, barkbusters hand guards and a rear rack. I attached a basket to the rear rack for my gear / groceries. Love the bike with my basket. Not the most stylish add but I can carry a case of beer with ease and this makes me very happy. Things i love about the bike. One is the ease which i can move it around The weight with the turning radius make this bike incredibly easy to manuaver while riding or sitting in the driveway. That makes it accessible and easy to use. The gas mileage is fantastic. With the stock Trail wing tires it handles the pavement with confidence. I live in a hilly curvy terrain and she is stable and strong. Maintenance is light. Changed the oil and adjusted the valves. Dealer wanted over 200 to do the valves. I bought a shop manual and a set of tools for under $40 bucks. Did the job myself after watching a youtube video. Took me an hour and a half the first time but think I I'll be able to do it in 30 minutes next time. And yes, tuning the valves is required to get the most out of this little engine. She started losing power on the upper rpm range but it was back after doing the tune at 1600 miles. Very glad I took the time to learn how. I love this bike for my everyday commuting. I am extremely happy with my purchase. I would rather be on this bike any day than behind the wheel of a car for these daily chores. Every day is literally a rollercoaster ride and I smile the whole trip.

    I've been watching your videos since I decided to get an XT250 last May 2018. I happen to live in the area you are in. In fact I live right near the mall where you began the video. Anyway, at almost 70 years old and with over 50 years of riding (first bike was a 1965 Honda S90 - GREAT BIKE!) I can say that your description of the XT250's good points are pretty valid. I'll mention a few of the things I find nice about it.
    First off I use it for running errands over any of my vehicles or other motorcycles (Africa Twin and CT70). It is so easy to get in and out of the garage. It feels like my mountain bike compared to the Africa Twin. I happen to travel with a truck and RV trailer and it's very easy to load and unload into my Chevy Colorado. I can take the mountain bike as well. So when I get somewhere camping the XT250 can explore just about anywhere (except deep sand) with ease and confidence. I can reach the ground and so far no dropping the bike. It averages 65 mpg as well. The suspension is soft but I adjust the speed accordingly.
    As you've mentioned it is not a road bike but it can go places if the roads are 55 mph or less. Otherwise it's just winding out. I'd prefer to limit such situations to less than 10 miles but I've traveled over 50 miles on 65 mph highways doing about 60. The other frustration is it won't trigger the sensors for the left turn lanes. So I plan my routes accordingly or.... Also,
    I bought mine used (a 2017) and it was pretty beat up with 8000 miles. But the past few months it seems to be proving itself for reliability and just plain fun. BTW it replaced a 2012 WR250R that I had and I use it for errands much more than I used the WR. Also, I either paid too much or you underestimated the value of a used XT250. If bought used they should hold their value for many years. They are also not exactly easy to find used. I was prepared to drive 1000 miles round trip to find mine but after searching for a month I found one about 250 miles round trip from me.
    I was going to take the WR250R on the TAT but I think it's possible to take the XT250. May need to stiffen the suspension for the load but I think it could be doable and easy to pick up (unlike the Africa Twin) if it gets dropped.
    In closing, I can understand why you'd be considering the WR but it is a tall bike and pricey (even used). If greater capability is an issue maybe a used KLR or even as someone mentioned a DR350 type could be nice. But nothing is as light and easy to maneuver around as this XT.
    BIKES I've owned in the past 20 years: 1991 Honda CT70 (still own), 2001 DRZ400S and E, 2012 Wr250R, 2007 Vstrom 650 (great bike - took it to Yellowstone), 2007 BMW R1200GS (to Canada), 2007 Gold Wing (Mt Rushmore), 2005 ST1300 Honda, 2013 Yamaha Tenere (took it to Alaska), Honda CRF1000D 2017 (just returned from Texas). I still have a 73 Honda Z50 as well. Of all the bikes I've owned the XT250 is the most practical around town. My original 1965 S90 Honda would be a close second.

      Hi there and thanks for your input on the XT250
      I'm of a similar age to you (71) and have riden and raced a few mbikes.
      Got my licence in 1967 on a Triumph Bonneville and like you, owned a Honda 90 Sports, way back in the 60's.
      My present bike is a KLR650 which I really enjoy. The downside is that it's getting to be a challenge to pick up, hence the reason I'm looking at a 250.
      (I also ride and race mountain bikes. It's a great way to keep fit and get the adrenaline flowing)
      Regards from S Africa

    • @johnmsac
      @johnmsac 4 года назад +1

      Nissan Guy. I am confident that the xt can handle most heat. The worst case I’ve seen is a lengthy sand wash which demands high power and generally low speed. Another is a very steep and long climb. No problem in Florida. My ct70 once encountered a 5000’ 10 percent climb (white mountains to see the Bristol cone pines). It was seizing. My son would take a mouthful of water from his camelback and spit a stream of water on the head. It would suddenly accelerate. Did that for at least the last 1000’. To this day the ct runs great. That was in 2001. You’ll be fine as long as there forward motion.

    I had done some upgrades, ie; LED headlights, Happy Trails pannier racking system,( with a set of soft panniers ) Wolfman Tank bag , a small windscreen, Airhawk air riding cushion etc and plan to take the bike to the many campgrounds we have here in New South Wales ( this will include dirt roads an well as paved roads ) and beyond
    As long as the bike can cruise along at 50 miles an hour ( on paved roads ) or so, that's good enough for me these days
    Anyway good video an well put together, and good luck to all

    Out of the many won a for reasons to own the XT250 my favorite has to be how easy it is on your body to ride. It's a Kush little Cadillac. I can write on the spike for 9 hours up in the mountains in the single track and still have energy to go. One day My friend and I traded bikes. His was a Honda 230. I didn't last more than 15 minutes and no was on my XT again. I'm afraid it has me spoiled :) It's perfect for easy leisure riding. If I want something faster or more capable ill get another bike to suit that mood. After 10 years on the XT that I bought brand new it still runs flawlessly and ive done nothing but fluid changes, chain, and a fork seal. This year I plan to change the battery and the spark plug and overhaul the bearings and other things for the 1st time and see the difference between its current state with 14 + 1000 miles and after a refreshing of the bike. Love it.

  • @exploder69
    @exploder69 5 лет назад +20

    Fellow XT250 owner, with mixed emotions. I'm almost 50 years old, and 5'8". I like to explore in the bush, riding every kind of stupid little trail and back road. I like to dance on the road, and that is not about speed (deadly), it's about being light and nimble. I also like to be able to hit the highway if I really need to, which is when it's the only road to where I'm going, otherwise every other road is more fun on a nimble bike. I might have bought a TW200, it's even a bit nicer to ride in the bush sometimes, but it just can't do the highway right. The XT250 just does, and that's enough to get to better places. Everywhere else it just shines. No, it's not a jumping dirt racer crazy thing with 200" suspension travel. You also don't have to be giant to ride it. But I can ride dangerous places, like beside cliffs, because I can put both feet on the ground for insurance, and waddling is better than falling down a 70 degree rocky hillside and landing impaled on a tree branch. I also prefer being air cooled, because I don't like walking home 30 miles out of the bush, when a stick takes out your radiator or hose. Did that more than once in trucks in years past, that was enough.
    What is the competition? The Honda, the Kawi, and used to be the Suzuki Super Sherpa, but that's gone now. The other two are great bikes to be sure, but they are both tall and water cooled, and the Honda is 30 pounds heavier. The Kawasaki might beat the XT in most respects, but then again, the XT is brutally simple by comparison, and again good for us short people.
    So my mixed emotions? Happy, elated, delighted, excited, inspired, impressed, thrilled, awed. Yup, an all happy mix. I can dream what if the thing was a 350 instead, and had an aluminum frame, it could be lighter and faster and all that jazz, and that would be great, but.... I'll take it the way it is over everything else out there, and go everywhere I want to go, and enjoy it immensely.

      +Leslie B My XT250 has done that one time only, about a year after I got the bike. But not when it was new, I went even faster when it was brand new, and it never happened. I think it might be caused by the tires. I don't like the original BridgeStone Trail Wing tires. Good traction in dirt, bad traction on wet roads, and also noisy when riding in a straight line because of the knobbies. I have new Shinko 700 tires, hopefully they will be a lot better.

      I enjoyed your written review as much as the video! So Thank you :-) As a rider looking to get into adventure riding, the XT250 looks ideal. I'm 5'10" and insist on being able to place my feet on the ground - check. A 250cc air cooled single is ideal for the dirt - check! My only concerns are riding it on the roads at highway speeds and luggage carrying capability. But overall, so far, the little Yamaha looks great!

      I agree with all your points. I chose a bike suited to my height and ability. I am 5' 9" and needed a more highway capable bike but wanted to do some light off road or moto camping. I got the BMW F700 with 31" seat height. I have 29" inseam. The suspension is good all around and fits me fine. Being able to flat foot with ability to do that on a slope is truly a good thing. I tried many and picked it for low center of gravity, power for 70 plus on freeway and decent scrambling ability and ground clearance.
      But what makes it good for on road isn't great off. I should have bought a road specific bike and a bike like yours for dirt and shorter around town commuting.

I have had extensive injuries while serving my country in the military but the XT 250 is about the only lightweight bike I can pick up from the ground when it falls over. If you never fall over sometimes, you are not offroading.I ride mine daily when the Georgia weather allows. Ive had mine for a few years so far and havent even had to tighten the chain yet. It has been maintenance free except for oil changes and replacing air filters and tires. Best bike Ive owned in a long time. Mine was a 1981 (See Stallone ride it in First Blood). As of the early 2000's, it was still running like a champ. That version would barely do 55 so highways were not really advised. @@grumpysquid XT is $500 more. It is probably better in every way. We are talking "beginner Bikes" though. performance is only about the last concern. I had a DR200 for a first dual sport. It cost me $1600. I sold it 2 years later for $1800.

    The xt250 is a great bike for a beginner -- for a year or two. I bought one in 2016, learned the basics, off-road and highway driving, but, like you say, you grow out of this bike. After a couple of years I got something faster and better looking, a Honda CBR650.. I dropped my xt250 more than a few times -- usually off-road -- and other than a few scratches on the bike, it always worked well. They don't depreciate in value that much (a plus) and they're easy to do maintenance on (another plus). And yes, if you're under 5'9", the xt250 is really the only bike you should be considering as a first bike.

    I was considering the XT250 last year but chose to get a street bike for now since there is very little places to ride in the dirt where I live in Arkansas, that is unless you know someone that will let you ride their private property. The way I see it now when I retire in a few more years I will be moving back out west where there is plenty of free dirt to ride on. At that tie I will be able to trade in my street bike for an XT250. I think it will be a great bike for camping and exploring and then be able to run in to town for more supplies when needed. Thanks for your videos I enjoy watching them.

    It great for light dual sport riding. It does a little bit of everything. No, it's not for extended highway trips - unless you want to get beat up by the wind and lag behind traffic.

    Last Tuesday I bought a second hand 2019 xt250 with 1400 km's on it in Australia and they're so expensive, $6000. You can buy a new 2021 for 8 grand. I bought it because I'm a beginner (at 58 years of age) and the low seat height and larger fuel tank. I pick it up in 2 days and I'm really excited. I liked your video. Thanks.

    You are right on the money with where you're riding it. Make no mistake, its capable in the dirt but it's no rock bike, hillclimber extraordinaire or motocrosser going over 5 foot jumps. Remember that and you're going to have a lot of fun. It's also very quiet and vibration friendly for a one lunger. Great for tooling around on back roads. Even better if you can find a little dirt to go along with it.

    I'm like @Gearbox, 6'2 and basically zero riding experience apart from the odd pitbike outing. I love this bike. Like I love it so much it's friggin great, she really hit the nail on the head too it handles well offroad, I've ridden it in dirt, mud, snow, it's *predictable* and it's *reliable,* has some power to it but not tooo much where a beginner would be completely overwhelmed and end up killing themselves the second they put it in gear. I really couldn't agree more with absolutely everything she said, awesome bike. If you're thinking about getting into riding and you're wondering what to get, get it. You won't regret it.

    I've been riding since 1989 so, I'm no beginner. What I am, is a motorcycle commuter/explorer.
    The main reason I've now owned 3 of these (2008.2014 and now a 2020) is that they are dead reliable (2 have gone over 50k miles before I retired them, due to road salt rust, no other problems, as I'm a winter commuter as well) Best of all, there is no radiator to smash or over heat, and no parts are needed for a valve adjustment, just your time.
    My 2020 already has 24,000 miles on it, and it goes down the highway nicely on my fishing trips for Trout plus, it take me off road further than I'm willing to walk in.
    This thing is manageable where other, larger ADV bikes I've owned, just wanted to pound you into the ground if you messed up. IMHO, smaller/simpler is BETTER, unless you only go to Starbucks via the highway. :)

Because thats whats fun on those bikes. They are made to go 150 plus, they are no fun to put around on. Im not into all that anymore. This bike is so light and easy, I run out and hop on it any chance I get. I love it so far.

I’m sure I’d be able to make it work but what you said about confidence is absolutely true, low seat height would be a lot easier to learn both on and off road. Being cheap as balls is just a plus at this point.

    Me you same same haha I couldn't agree more mate, for the same reasons I ride the xr250r , cheap, reliable, simple, air cooled , kick start only and I get a tone of shit for it haha everybody say get a ktm, Husqvarna .. go bigger.. why? It does everything I want it to do.. I was a hiker who suffers with bad knees now I can still get out in nature.. I'm not out to impress people, I just want to go up the woods and camp out, cook some food on a fire and have a Cheech .. that's what I enjoy. Yeah my bikes lame on the road.. I got smoked off the lights by a range Rover the other day but that dude had spent 70k to be able to do that.. I built mine for a grand . It gets me from A to B on the street and up the side of mountains so what more could I ask for. I am getting a Yamaha xt660z in the next few weeks.. but that's another bike people will say "oh you shoulda got the ktm , bmw blah blah blah ... I generally ride on my own so nobody is going to help me pick it up, it's basically a big dirt bike with a dashboard and with a decent load capability and will cruise at 90mph all day .. proven up to 100k mileage faultlessly so again it will do what I want it to do, carry camping equipment long distance saving my little Honda's legs on bigger trips .. shiiit..people go round the world on 660 teneres so it can't be that bad! Everybody out there is an arm chair expert ... If you don't have a channel and your own videos showing me how to do it better ..shut your friggin mouth eh! Haha oh you shoulda.. where's ya content bud? Might have a shiney new ktm daddy bought you but it's never dirty in ya Instagrams .. no live footage.. haha you know the type.. all the gear and no idea.. and a big mouth lol and prolly ginger hair! .. any way everything you said in this video makes perfect sense buddy . Great video .

I jumped a rail road bed and landed so hard I broke the right side peg off and that's the only thing I broke also my buddy and I made a video of us jumping each other. I wish I would of kept that bike now. That bike looked the same as that bike but was water cooled and 2 Stroke. 👍🤠 I'm 42 now and im 6' and had no problem with it.

    If someone is looking for best overall utility then this bike is probably the choice. I am personally going to get one just for that. I am not going to jump it, ride wheelies and showboat around. If I want to ride to town or go cross country and camp then this does the job. If I want to hit the trails and not be concerned with deadlifting four or five hundred pounds in a mud out condition then this light weight bike is good for that. I mean really it is a utility that gets you there. I ride sport bikes, over a thousand cc and it wears you down for a couple hundred miles on average.
    I need light, torque that gets me there and not get worn out by just wrestling with the ride. Nimble, lean and consistently reliable.

    Currently own a 06 TW200. It's a great bike but it's getting older. Not sure if my next bike will be the XT250 or KLX250. I don't like the CRF250...its heavier and has soft suspension. The CRF might be good for people that stay on the road more, but I'm always off road. I want something for the woods.

    • @noyopacific
      @noyopacific 5 лет назад +2

      I have an XT and the KLX is the only other bike I would seriously consider. So far I have decided that the simplicity and reliability of an air-cooled motor, slight weight and added fuel capacity of the XT250 isn't worth giving up for the longer suspension travel, 6th gear, and added 2 +/- hp of the KLX. It is a very, close call. It seems like either would be an excellent choice.

    • @SnickterP
      @SnickterP 5 лет назад +1

      @@noyopacific I'd have to agree. I sold my 2010 KLX 250SF (supermoto version) for a 2015 XT250. I liked the KLX, but it had a huge cold start problem and also had a few electrical issues. The Yamaha has been dead reliable. I'd only consider a KLX again if it was one of the new fuel injected models.
