    Hey guys,
The XT250 is a fantastic bike but if you're thinking about picking one up there are some things you have to consider before you buy one. Although they aren't deal breakers for me, they may be just enough for you to consider purchasing a different bike. Stay tuned for the long list of reasons why you should buy an XT later on this week.

I'm 45 yrs old, 240lbs and couldn't pass up a great deal on a 2017 XT250 w/ 600 miles on it to ride with my 13yr old boy and his TT-R225. It's my first bike and I love it. I'm a gear-head at heart and love working on stuff. The Suspension was way to soft for my girth so I went right at it. I replaced the front springs with some stiffer progressive ones and replaced the rear shock spring with a hefty Hyperco 550# Coil-Over spring. Less than $175 bucks, minimal modifications, and 2hrs of garage time after work. With the FMF pipe, Power Commander and K&N filter the bike now pulls throttle wheelies in 2nd when it couldn't even do it in first gear when I got it. You got me started though...my first mod was the Cyclops headlight! Then I ripped out all the stock lighting and went full LED. Its a sweet ride! Keep up the great vids...peace out!

All you have to do to make it more highway worthy is put a +1 tooth larger sprocket on the front. Makes each gear taller and top gear will most likley cruise 70 at a full thousand less rpms or more. Best mod you can do to ANY 250-300 class motorcycle is add a tooth to the front sprocket, they all need it.

I love my 2010 XT250. Perfect back-roads bike, street legal, climbs rocks like a homesick angel. It's light, quiet, gentle on the environment, easy on sprockets, tires, etc. It's time to put the studded knobbies on for the snow. I'm 55, 200lbs. This is how old motocrossers relax.

No, I take it easy. It's 8 years old and still mint, other than a few minor scratches. The only real complaint I have is no kick-starter. Too many compare it with competition bikes. It's not. In my case it's a two wheeled tractor that will take me anywhere there is a trail.

I own a 2014 xt250 and I promise you that it is fully capable of anything. And everything. I drive in the middle of the winter when theres 6 feet of snow on the ground and I ride it in the summer, I have redlined the bike for over 12 hours of its life at the very least and I am not kidding you... Hopefully soon I will get some videos

I had an XT250 for 2 years and could do highway riding, fully loaded for camping (hard panniers, topcase, etc.) and never had wobble. I even done it with a passenger, going all the way up to 75 mph indicated (probably a little less than 70 mph true speed). The tires are very important, I used Shinko 705 and they were great on the road. Here in Canada I can go 65 mph all day and don't have problem with traffic (and at this speed I have to overtake some cars from time to time). I now have a KLR 650 and frankly appart from the fact that the KLR can maintain 65 mph even with a strong head wind, I regret selling the XT250... It was much more comfortable, nimble, economical and reliable. Maintenance is much easier on the XT than the KLR, adjusting valves for example took me 1h on the XT, for the KLR I'm planning to do it but it's so complicated that It will probably take me a day or two, adding the fact that I will have to get new shims. As for the windscreen, I had a generic one that fits on any bike, cheap and very effective (it was a Sliptreamer from Spitfire)

Like to believe you routinely do 75 on the 225 but........ I'd give 60 to 65 on the level.. maybe.. or down a slight decline. Even if you could, the bike ( including the XT250 ) just isn't meant for that kind of highway speed.. I do agree that wobble is a non issue on yours or the XT250 if it's set up properly.

'Guys this bike isn't very good on the highway' while he flies by car after car on the highway like they're standing still. Seriously, this is great content on the XT250, probably the best video out there on it. Fortunately now in 2024 there seem to be more accessories available in the US.

Man knows so little about this machine. . . Taking the XT on the highway is like taking a fish out of water and expecting it to do the tango on the living room floor.

Well the entire point to this video was about what he didn't like about the XT, sure its a dual sport but I think he is spot on about it on the road. The best parts of the bike is off road which wasnt the point of the video, if anything the XT is all about trail riding and is what makes you want to buy one so I can get why he didn't show it off road.

DEATH WOBBLE. The only time I've had this is when the dealer significantly reduced my tire pressure, during the 7K maintenance. It went away as soon as I increased the pressure to my normal. I believe it was due to the tire being worn in the middle, so it would cycle between being driven on the left edge, then the right edge. This probably also happens on other bikes.

Thanks for posting, I bought my 2013 XT250 new in 2014 and didn't notice the wobble at first. After a year or so (1200 mile, half trail, half street) I started to notice it and had still not seen anyone else mention it, so I thought I must have a wheel out of true or something. Couldn't find anything wrong though, so I just stayed under 60mph (no fun) until I got new on/off tires, hoping it would be better...but it wasn't. The local shop couldn't find anything wrong either, they just blamed the tires...now thanks to your video and all these comments, at least I know I'm not alone. I'm only 5'5", 140lbs, so I liked that it was a pretty light bike with a low seat, but I wish I could get it on a highway to visit places that have trails. Unless I buy a truck, I guess I'm stuck with a local only dirt bike :(. I do love it on the highly technical trails here in New England, I must say that at least.

I have ridden my XT225 from Phoenix, AZ to Portland, OR and back 3 times. Yes, the seat is a killer, but all dual sport seats are like that. I left Phoenix west on I-10, stayed in the right lane at 60 mph into CA. Once in CA, their crazy speed limits become a blessing for a small bike. Their truck speed limit is 55 mph. Just stay in the truck lane and you'll be fine. OR is the same. 55 mph for trucks. Just fall in behind a slow moving truck and stay there. I have close to 45,000 hard miles on my XT225 and it has never broken down. I have a parts bike with a nice 3,000 mile engine ready to go into it when necessary. I also have a Clarke 4 gallon gas tank, which gives me a 250 mile range on the highway, and a centerstand (no longer available) for fixing flats and oiling the chain. Don't underestimate these small bikes, but don't try to cruise at 70+ mph on them either.
I'm now 59, 6' 240. A bit big for the bike, but it is a wonderful trail bike, and people have crossed the country on 50cc mopeds. Hell, people have crossed the country on pedal bicycles. I used to race MX when I was a teenager, but had to give it up when I got a real job. They threatened to fire me because I had too many injuries. Now those injuries are coming back to haunt me.

I've taken my 2014 from Louisiana through Texas through sand dunes in amarillo hale storms in clayton new Mexico all the way up to Colorado mountains.
I filled up a couple times sure... and we didn't want to turn on at 7,000 altitude... but it made it to the top 15,000 altitude to the cabin I was staying at and breezed through a snow storm just in time for some compact snow off road riding.
This bike ENDURES, as long as the rider is willing to endure also.
I've changed the oil and battery maybe twice.
This bike isn't a rip-it racer, but it does the speed limit.
It's pretty weather friendly regardless of the weather you will find yourself in.
With a huge suspension to boast, pot holes are a blip in your ride.
I'm about 140lbs, though, so it is definitely important to look at your weight limit on the bike before purchase.
All in all, 4.5 grand and just liability coverage... new oil tires and battery twice... 5.5 since I've bought it is what I've put into it. It is a good starter bike for people just starting out and it is good to last as a fun ride.
I do wish they had bigger models in this series but omit that it is pretty solid.

Came here because I have a 2017 XT250 and I love it so much. There are no complaints from me at all. The highway thing is part of the bike, one of the tradeoffs of a small dualsport. None of these 250-300s are in another league from the XT. It's like complaining about taking your MT09 is bad offroad. The XT250 designed to be what it is, is perfect. And unlike the CRF300LS, it's made in Japan (CRF is made in Thailand).

Death wobbles are usually a result of the front tire selection and/or low front tire air pressure. One potential fix is to tighten your steering head bearings a enough to give a small amount of friction damping...just make sure you don't over tighten them and have difficulty moving the handlebars!

I've ridden the XT250, and as a smaller rider it fit me like a glove! It just didn't fit my riding style enough to buy it. I opted for the Suzuki DR650. The seat height was manageable; highway riding is easy peasy lemon squeezy, and the aftermarket is ginormous! I sold my VStrom 650 (an amazing bike) to buy the DR, and I've never looked back. Oh, and it's relatively cheap, too! Take care my friend, and ride safe.

  • @ShaneZettelmier

I think if I had to buy a new bike this is probably what I would buy. Honestly I wish they had a 350 or 400 but these comfortable simple air cooled bikes are awesome. They perform fairly well they do get on the street OK off-road and they’re not super high-performance but the trade-off is they last forever you can do all the work yourself and it’s very easy to do in the maintenance intervals are way far out so you’re not wasting all your time working on it. The calyx and the CRF are just uncomfortable dirt bikes and they’ve got better tech in design for off road but I want a comfortable simple bike that I can ride I wanna do some miles on the street I don’t want a very easy jump on and go bike and if I hit dirt roads I want to go camping or do some trails and drive through the mountains it’ll do it all comfortably. I loved the old XT 350 it was a great bike I like the Honda better but they don’t make these midsize bikes anymore the only real option with enough power to make a difference is going to be is a DRZ 400 and I like them but they should’ve kept the six speed that was on the DR 350 and they’re just uncomfortable. They’re great bikes but I want some thing easier more comfortable and it’s slower but I would rather have the XT 250 but I really wish they would come out with a 350 or 400 version. In the 90s they had an XT 350 and it was awesome come on pretty much the same thing nice comfortable seat very simple tech but the 350 had enough power to ride a big rider or two up or with some luggage you had the power to do wheelies with nothing but throttle and plenty of power to get through the sanding up the steep hills you could cruise along the freeway at 75 Easily. The 250 is great but if you’re a big guy there’s not quite enough power but I would rather deal with not quite enough power than the other bikes at this point. Yamaha need to come up with an XT 350 or 400 and Honda should come out with an XR 350 L or 400 L
as far as the gas tanks you should check out the XT 350 tank it pretty much bolts on to a TW 200 if you shave a little the bracing out of the seat so it’ll bend up a little farther and I’m guessing this is probably pretty close. I seen racks on these but I don’t know if they were built specifically for it but I can weld so I’m not really worried about accessories like that. If I was smaller and thinner I think this would be awesome for a good basic multipurpose bike but Japanese bikes seem to be made for people that weigh 140 or 150 pounds all the time and I’m 256 and the 350 version be a lot nicer. On this I have to send it the suspension all the way up and it’s not horrible but it could be better. They do a 350 with some more turkey power and suspension like the 90s bikes they’re awesome. I used to ride an XL 600 and kind of one of the 350s that were a little lighter but still had plenty of power and torque and had those six speed transmissions they gave you a lot more options especially in the slower stuff. If I’m looking to buy now I’m trying to decide between an XT 250 and an XR 650 L because there’s nothing in between that’s a comfortable simple bike and start adding in radiators and electronics and all the other crap and really hard skinny and comfortable seats and riding positions which is awesome if you’re gonna ride motocross but I want a simple easy comfortable multipurpose dual sport and these are exactly that they just need to come out with a couple more models with bigger engines and a little more suspension

  • @DualsportChic
    @DualsportChic 6 лет назад +29

Death wobble is probably a tire issue - I take mine up to 70 mph (per gps) and it is rock solid. I've got nearly 40K MILES on the bike and for a 18 hp bike with a low seat height, its a great bike. And who wants to take a 250 on the highway in the first place??? Most of us have other bikes for that purpose. The bike is a great option for shorter riders and reliability is exceptional. Accessories can be found through Canada - the problem is that aftermarket companies are not willing to invest in the bike as it doesn't sell enough due to its small size. I have the Yamaha Genuine Accessories Aluminum Skid plate and tail rack with pannier pieces - so you are wrong there - they don't only make a plastic skid plate and there are many other accessories you can get from our neighbors to the north. You get 2.6 gallons on the non CA bikes and 4 oz less on the CA bike - not sure where you are getting your information . Yes, suspension is soft but many bikes in this market are the same - CRF250L, Super Sherpa, etc. etc. Standard upgrade. I've taken this bike through some horrendous terrain and it holds up and lead a 200 person DS group with it BTW - this is what is is meant for and NOT the highway. The whining on this video really grates me and is all about getting video hits for sucking up for a few RUclips bucks. Please - for God sakes - get off the highway and use the bike for the purpose it was made for. And while you're at it, look around a bit more for accessories - its a great bike and I hate to hear people trash talking it unfairly.

Changing tyre pressure can sometimes fix the death wobble on some bikes.
Lowering the pressure fixed mine and it was hands off after that.
Also if the chain was poorly adjusted and the back wheel axil is not aligned straight it might add to a problem.
Mine required riding my weight slightly off center to ride hands off and it always wobbled because the axil was slightly forward on one side.
    Aligning the rear wheel
and or the air pressure fixed it for some reason.

      Well, they're totally different bikes.
I would think a yz125x is more offroad only. Can you even register them for the street? I had a yz125, and yz85 good bikes. But not for the road.
And the xt250 is totally different. You're not going to take it on a motocross track. It's good for trails tho. And back roads.
You could probably lower a yz, make it fit. If that's more what you actually want..

Hey bro ! I ride my honda grom on the highway for over 60 miles with know problems , know problems at all , I just stay in the right lane(slow lane) the minimum is 45mph across the US so as long as Im doing 50mph plus Im ok, and people do not honk at me either..And even when I ride my WR250R on the highway I only do speeds of 50mph to 60mph which are highway speeds and know one honks at me at all. I do not like to drive at high speeds of 70mph plus. The Key is if your doing highway riding is to stay in the slow lane. I had a Klr650 for 13 years and I did the same thing 50-60mph, and it was never a problem. So if I had xt250 I would defiantly ride it on the highway.

The highway death wobble comes from too stiff of a grip. The turbulence hits your body, and with stiff arms, it transfers to the handlebars, causing your wobble. I had the same issue till someone told me to relax my arms more. I'd occasionally catch myself doing it again and as soon as I relax a little, it smooths right up. A windscreen would help too, but relaxing the stiffness in your arms does the job.

Good video man! Biggest change performance wise I made to my 2015 XT was putting in a K&N air filter. I know that shouldn't sound like much, but believe it or not it seriously made the little guy accelerate quicker. What I'm trying to figure out is if its worth the loss of top end that I experience now. I'm 6' and 180lbs, so bigger than you, and since I put in that air filter my top cruising speed now is a realistic 65 mph. Not awful for the NYC/Long Island highways I mainly travel, but not great either. Have you had any experience with exhausts for this bike? Im not usually one for making a trail bike louder, but if it somehow gains some tip end, it could be worth it. Are there fuel re-mappers for the FI too?

    • @danieldieker6493

There is a plug and play computer, plus a fb group where someone did a write up for how to adjust your fuel ratio with the buttons on the dash. You probably can get a little extra power by tweaking it, at the cost of fuel efficiency. Could probably gain as much as you'd lose going to a 16t front sprocket that will make the speedometer more accurate and stretch your gears a little farther.

I hadn’t ridden a bike in almost 40 years when a friend of mine bought a couple of bikes and got me interested in them again. Being a little nervous I chose an XT250 to get back in the saddle again.
I had envisioned doing a lot of trail riding but so far it’s been mostly street, with a lot of it being on L.A.s freeways. I put some ADV type tires on it and took it to a track day once, rode the crap out of it, scared myself silly a time or two, surprised a few sport bikes in the corners, and had a blast. After being on the rev limiter all day the XT simply shrugged it off.
The head angle is a bit steep which makes it ride great in the dirt but makes it a little unstable on the street, especially at high speeds. It’s something that’s not horrible and can be adjusted to. So far I’ve not experienced speed wobbles at any speed.
If you ride one on the highway you’ll find yourself with the throttle pinned a lot. Depending on road slope and any headwind I might be riding into I find that I can usually ride along around 75mph without being WFO, although upgrades and headwinds can change that. One time I got an indicated 93mph, but I had a slight downgrade with a tailwind.
The XT simply takes anything you dish out and comes back for more.

I rode an ‘82 xt250 for decades. The XT 225 kept the same power with a six speed transmission. The current generation XT250 went back to a five speed transmission and was a step back. The jump from first to second gear in the woods with a passenger is too tall. Then I often try to upshift to a sixth gear, which it feels like it could handle fine. My CRF230 did fine with six speeds but couldn’t carry a passenger. My biggest gripe.

I was shocked by the lack of after market accessories for this bike especially because it was virtually unchanged for so many years. I ride this bike mostly off road on super rocky terrain so the suspension upgrade is definitely a necessity. I was looking at the Cogent Dynamics option, just haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
This bike does pretty well off road, it climbs great and is just an overall pleasure to ride. Another major plus is that I can flat foot on it which was a huge selling point to me.

I have a 2008 with 28K on her... Paid for itself twice over.... Now the header pipe rusted off and the bolts both broke off in the head so I need a new pipe and I'm taking the motor out right now so we can weld something on the bolts and remove them. Since I have her down I'm going to bump up the HP a bit and up and the gearing a tad too. They only make 17HP stock from what I'm reading 22-24HP is fairly easy to obtain. Also intend to put a fork brace on her as I read on a thumper forum that solves the 65MPH wobble which is rather irksome. With the low power and the wobble it does NOT belong on the highway but might be doable once I'm done.
Bottom line I love mine, wonderful commuter 72MPG. I just picked up a great BMW G650GS so no hurry it is now a spare bike. One thing I learned after riding the BMW the Yamaha headlight is pathetic. This is after upgrading to an LED headlight that is twice as good as the factory garbage. I hit a deer with her and can't help but wonder how much the headlight factored in. I might at some Denali's or similar additional lighting. Anyway these are light, uber efficient, reliable and just fun to ride. No intention of selling her worth more to me than the market will bare so I will sink a few more dollars than really makes sense and hopefully God willing get some rides in with my boys. FWIW I'm 55 and go 215 lbs. Not sure about the bottoming out I don't have that problem?

I agree to a point about the highway worthiness of the XT, but anyone buying one pretty much should know that going in. While the other 250s do slightly better on the street IMO they are not that much better. My geared down DRZ its every bit as buzzy at 70mph. I do disagree with the suspension on the XT, it is soft but its far from horrible and I weight a solid 40 pounds more than you. I think you just need to tighten that rear shock... I have put well over a thousand dirt miles of hard riding in Colorado and while soft the suspension performs very well for how short the bike is and the front forks. Accesories wise you are dead on it is pretty sad on how few that we have for the XT. Over all decent thoughts there but might have been nice to get some off road footage in this.

I have a xt 225 back in 2007 and after using it for almost 5 years, I decided to sell it. I have no issue on the 225 xt, the power is there and it's satisfying to ride even on and off the road. In 2011, I bought a XT 250 and used it until 2016, the 250 has almost the same power like the 225 and it's not a bad bike anymore. The power is there, but what I noticed is, the XT 250 is an "old school" design, even the 2018 version of the Xt 250 is not yet updated. For me, the XT 225 is way more better than the 250(just for me). I'm looking forward to see yamaha update this bike(xt250) in the next few years and if they release a new XT250 with updated features and specs, I would probably check it out and if those upgrades are good, i'd buy an XT again. By the way, my current bike right now is a XR 400r.

Whats different about the Serow 250 (asia model)? I have one here in the Philippines and love it. Nowhere to ride over 60mph here safely. (would LOVE a big tank!)

Unbelievable the trails I have put my XT thru. I believe it's more capable than you are. Highly recommend this bike if trails are part of your agenda.

I believe all these issues can be solved with the 350.

Hello Patrick. I just added Barkbusters to my XT 250 and noticed something the very first ride. Steering was much more stable at higher speeds than before. With the short wheel base of this bike, steering is very responsive. This has both its advantages and disadvantages if ones not ready. I usually just lean back into the handlebars when going at higher speeds and really never noticed much of a death wobble but steering is still very sensitive. Todays rides was different. With the constant and equal pressure of air hitting my barkbusters, steering at higher speeds became less sensitive and very stable. No wobble. I suggest them to any rider on this bike. Best add so far.

One reason you should not get an xt250 is you can get a wr250 for $1,500 more. I know the seat is higher, but the bike can be lowered.
