Yamaha XT250 Test Ride and First Impressions: Quite Possibly The Best Dual Sport for Short Riders

- I was very excited to have a chance to take out the 2022 Yamaha XT250 on an extended on and off road test ride thanks to our friends at Power Yamaha in Sublimity, Oregon. The Yamaha XT250 is one of my favorite dual sport motorcycles for new riders because of its low seat height, modern features like fuel injection and disk brakes, low cost of ownership, and easy power delivery. This extended Yamaha XT250 test ride gave me an opportunity to do both an on road and off road XT250 test ride and I was impressed with its performance. My overall Yamaha XT250 review is that it's a very capable and easy to ride bike for a dual sport beginner, but has enough power and capability to make it fun for even an experienced rider. It's not fast but you can push it as hard as you want and never get yourself in trouble and that's its own kind of fun.

No radiator to fix/maintain either. Yamaha dealer told me he supplies about 5 XT250 every 2 years to the local police for park patrol. He says they trade them in with 15,000 to 20,000 miles on them and they run like tops. He sells all of them used the same week. Nice starter/fun bike and probably the best 250 for shorter inseam folks.
What do you consider to be a shorter inseam?
@@drawfark I hope you don't mind me commenting. I would classify shorter inseams as 30 inches or less. I have a 30 inch inseam. I can flat foot an XT250 but I'm on my toes on a CRF250L. I cannot reach the ground to take a WR250R off the kickstand.
That's a great point. At 5'9" it's not just about seat height. I also like the combination of EFI and air cooled. And unlike the competition, it's completely made in Japan. That matters, those people work on honor, not on the bottom line. I prefer Honda, but the CRF300L is made in Thailand. Honda guys will speak out of both sides of their mouth on that one, making an exception for their bike, but not for their car etc.
Basically truck/gun/bike goons will crap all over anything they don't currently own themselves for any number of reasons... for me the XT250 is just about perfect. I like flat footing both feet on city streets. My choice.
Where is this at? Are prices good of those fleet bikes?
Im 6’2”, have been riding for a long time, and love my XT. While its a great bike for shorter and newer riders, its still great for rest of us too. Its not ideal for those that must have the biggest, most expensive, or flashiest thing. What is most impressive is the fact that you can buy this inexpensive motorcycle and it does not skimp on quality at all.
I’m 6’1” 230 and was wondering if a 250 is too small? I’m pretty inexperienced and don’t want to spend 8k on a 450, really would like to know if this bike is too small
I'm 5'7" and 230. As far as weight goes it's got all the torque and power you need to have fun. Height I dunno. Putting your feet down would be easy. But raised handlebars would be needed for comfort if you're tall
I have one and am slightly taller. What did u do to make a better fit in the bike
pshh. I'm 6'2 190 and this bike sucks ass. It's SO slow, you can only ride in in 30-45mph zones. 50mph fully opened us. It's WAY too small for us. Do not buy it. A slow bike is extremely dangerous. You try to beat traffic you're going to get smashed.
I'll never understand why the small cc sport bikes are so much more popular for beginners than bikes like this. Nothing better to learn on than a small displacement dual sport and once you know what your doing, they're still a ton of fun (I love my TW200) and appeal to a much larger group for resale.
Well for me I’m making my first purchase with the thoughts of 5+ years in mind… I would rather get a dual sport so I don’t HAVE to learn on cement… but will I get bored of a smaller cc engine if I learn to ride quick? I would rather get a 400 cc and ease my way into it knowing I have the power to keep me happy for a few years while I really learn how to ride … just my 2 cents from someone new in this hobby

I've been riding dual sport bikes since a Yamaha IT175 in 1980 and mostly bigger since.
I currently provide motorcycle rider lessons and adventure rides in South Africa.
It depends on your height and the terrain you plan to ride the most. If you're aprox 5.8 or shorter and don't plan a lot of freeway riding but more back roads and off-road, then this XT will be ideal (as per the Dork)
If you're quite tall and enjoy a bit more freeway riding with less technical off-road riding then something like a KTM390 may be ideal for the next 2/3 years. If you think you may prefer faster, long distance adventure riding with even less technical off-road terrain, then I'd suggest a mid-sized adventure bike, like a Yamaha T700 or BMW F 800/850 GS until you're about my age, where you may want something like this XT250 again (LOL)
Most dual sports are utilitarian looking which turns off new youth rider who wanted style over functionality. Look at how many people would shit on naked small CC for example.

Good day, Dork! After doing quite a bit of research including videos like yours, I bought a new one of these about 3 months ago. I'm 70 years old, 5'-10" and 160 lbs. I've been riding my entire life, but just got tired of big, heavy bikes that are not all that much fun unless you're serious about 0-60 runs, track day or cross-country riding. That said, with just about 3k miles on this bike, I can honestly say this is the best kept secret in motorcycles! I've had other Yamahas in the past but this one, even though it hasn't been updated since 2013, is one of the best overall designs I've ever seen. The round headlight and small fly shield do a remarkable job of diverting air flow off the chest. The fit and finish of this bike are, in my opinion, better than either Kawasaki or Suzuki, and this bike is really easy to modify and work on. I find the layout of seat-to-handlebar-to-footpeg to be near perfect. The seat is long enough that it's always easy to find a comfortable riding position. Although I'm new to dirt riding, the little I've done so far produces big smiles every time! This is a very versatile bike!
It would not be a bad beginners bike, but the large front wheel and smaller rear wheel can make the bike a bit hard to learn on because of the geometry of the suspension. That would not stop me from recommending this bike, however. It has a very "quick" turning radius, especially at slow speeds, but honestly, once you get used to it, it makes it even more fun to ride! It really helps you to learn to look where you want the bike to go, and not look at where the bike is going. A trait that must be learned by any rider.
It's essentially a dirt bike with lights, but I still find it comfortable at 65 on the back roads I ride on. No, I agree that this is not a good freeway bike, but I disagree that "it gets blown around quite a bit". I ride high speed back roads with lots of truck traffic and I don't get blown around anywhere near as much as I did on my BMW (that I just sold). This bike is very light, but it has little surface area to be affected by winds. It will run all day at 65, but if I decide to do some real dual-sport type riding, I'll buy a windshield for it. If you're an experienced rider, it will surprise you with how well it handles on the road. No, it's not a sport bike, but I can take some really fast corners on it even with the dirt bike tires that come on it. Which by the way, get lots of bad reviews online. But I'm finding them to be very sticky on the road, grippy in the dirt, and they are wearing like iron! Not a big fan of Bridgestone tires, but these are much better than I thought they would be. Yamaha is serious about this bike being ridden off road, as even the rear wheel has a bead lock! I wasn't expecting that.
My only "complaint" would be that the brakes on this bike are the most "wooden" I've ever had. I realize that's probably a good feature for riding in the dirt, but heavy braking on pavement can be an eye opening experience! Just be sure to allow extra distance for stopping! If I can find them, I'll probably upgrade the brake pads to something with more grip. Yes, that could take a lighter touch in the dirt for sure, but I think the road safety of the bike deserves better brakes. Under real heavy braking, it's fairly easy to come close to locking up the front wheel with such a narrow tire, but it gives you plenty of warning and is an avoidable experience. No anti-lock here, but you don't need it either.
And for those who are concerned about the 2.5 gallon tank, I know it's hard to believe, but no matter how hard I ride this bike, I CONSISTENTLY get 85 mpg. NO KIDDING! The caveat is that I did take the time and effort to complete the break-in procedure that the manual states, and I'm glad I did. With an air cooled engine, the break in is essential and will pay dividends in the long run. Just be patient, and the REAL FUN will begin after the first 1k miles!! I had the dealer perform the required 600 mile service, and it really made a difference on how well the engine ran. It was an expensive service, but worth the price.
All I can say is that I wish I had bought one of these a long time ago. It's the most fun on a motorcycle I've ever had!! If your viewers are thinking about buying one, GO FOR IT!

I was going to list mine for sale today to get the Honda CRF250L and I am glad I didn't. I love the Yami XT250. I have a windshield and all the extras. Skid plate, widened foot pegs and a back rack. It's a fun bike.

The XT250 is an amazing beginner bike. I had a very clean XT225 which was awesome for anyone who showed up and wanted to ride for the day, very confidence inspiring for new riders.

I’m an experienced rider and currently own two motorcycles, one of which is an XT250. I love it and ride it whenever I can. It’s a really great bike that has enough low end power to make it fun and a low seat height that makes the bike feel like a trials bike when you stand up. Plus, it has a seriously great turning radius.
What is your second bike. I'm a long experienced dual sport rider but looking for something like this as a knock around bike.
It' has almost trials like steering radius.. great in the tight woods around sharp turns.

Picked up a 2022 XT250 for my wife (she’s new to ridding and short 5’5” & 100lbs) and loves this bike!! Turns out I love this bike too but I’m way to cramped on it at 6’. I would definitely recommend this bike!!
That was basically my experience. Fun but cramped.
Bought the Mrs one two summers ago. I sometimes sneak it for a ride when she isn’t looking. Fun little bike and perfect for her to get out and bomb around the logging roads
Just bought one from the dealership in Fairview, Oregon. Probably one of the last XT 250s in the metro area, I feel lucky to have gotten it!
I'm an experienced rider and wanted a little commuter bike for work...the Harley isn't made for 20 mile round trips.
This bike is so well balanced and the low seat height makes it feel really playful...I can hardly wait to get her off-road and see how she does.
Xt250 and tw200 are definitely the best dual sports for short riders. I bought a tw200 for my girlfriend and it has been kind to her :)
The KLX 230s is nice too. I didn't ride it. Just sat on it.

this is probably one of the only 250cc bikes that my wife could ride, and i found a lowering link to make that even better. now this bike is on my must own list. even though ive never been a yamaha person, if it works for my wife, that's all i care.
I am days away from picking one up as my first off-road bike. I did my research on used bikes and chose this one. Once I found the quality and price that I liked, I knew that I had to make it happen. It’s great to see that so many other riders have a positive view of the XT250. I feel like I’ve made a good selection. DITR, thank you for the overview.

I love my XT250. I’m 5’10 and most other dual sports are just taller (seat height) than I’m comfortable with. Almost no other alternatives except maybe a Suzuki 200. I honestly don’t know why manufacturers make their seats so high. It’s not for ground clearance, the XT has a good 11 inches which is right in line with the competition.
I'm 6'3" and don't have too much an issue with the height. Its very confidence inspriing offroad on trails. I grab this always on short stints and save serious offroading to my Husky501. My wife tells me to never sell the XT since I've always smiling and giddy riding this toy. This was also my gateway thumper to more serious single track riding.

I wish Yamaha would make this in a 450 version. It would definitely be my second bike. Currently have a Super Tenere that's just plain reliable, but not really as dirt oriented as much as I would like.
Yeah , like the old XT 550 from the early 80’s those things were like a tank . I’d love to see the modern day version of something like that . You’re right on the money , an XT 450 , basically identical to this XT 250 , just more CC’s that would give it so much more capability for intermediate highway use with excellent dirt manners . A truly do it ALL bike !
Or even a 300cc with just 10 more ponies and zero weight gain would be a world of difference to the majority of XT250 owners while retaining all the good things this bike embodies.. Only real issue is power for the more experienced rider. At present about all you can do is gear it down a tooth in the front or a couple in the back. There's really no mods for the engine. The gearing makes a world of difference except it might make the bike sing more on downhill stretches. Up hills it's a plus. Maybe an option for better suspension as well.. Lots of guys could sit down with Yamaha engineers and easily transform this into something more special that what it is.. I guess the WR250 was basically this bike on a few steroids and better suspension.. don't know about the seat height however..
Making it a 300 to compete more with the klx300 and the cf300l is what it needs. Thats right in tbe picket for a nimble trail bike. 250s were the king of the really nimble offroading. Youre really can be like a billie goat on the 250s. Why im lookin at a klx300

Best bike for beginners and veterans alike. I passed my licence on it and keep her for 3 years till I finally upgraded to a larger displacement.

These are bikes are sooooo fun. It's the proverbial "slow-ish bike that's very fun to ride fast". Where with my DRZ400 I'm constantly having to restrain myself because of the huge torque, with the XT250 I can wring the throttle balls out without having to worry too much about killing myself. Very light and easy for technical terrain and single track. With some suspension work it can be a very capable Enduro bike
Tony - I'm 5'9" and have a DRZ400. I'm looking at downsizing to this because I ride with kids (5/9yrs old) and constantly have to get off/on which is harder on my DRZ. Plus the size/weight of the DRZ is still intimidating. Will I be happy with this downsize in your opinion since you seem to have both bikes?
I've been riding dirt bikes for years and 4 years ago decided to get my m2 license and this was the bike I did it on. Looking to buy it next March. Awesome bike.
A few years ago I met a young guy from Switzerland. He was touring the USA on an XT. Being rather tall and long-legged, he was using a seat pad to save his knees. I believe it was 3 or 4 inches thick. He was mostly camping and carried everything on the bike, including his laptop.
No problems with the bike, of course.
Had one of these in my MSF course and I loved riding it, felt great to learn on for sure and the seat height was just right for a 30 inch inseam 5"8" guy like me.

I had one and traded it on a KLX300, no regrets but I do miss it a little. In a perfect world, I’d have kept it too. The XT just has a personality, it is a very fun bike.
I'm debating on those same two bikes right now, any advice? The XT250 is nearly $1000 cheaper and has a larger fuel tank so I'm leaning toward it , I'm 6'1 btw if that matters since people are saying the XT is nice for shorter riders and I'm tall, first dirtbike here and want a bike for short 25 min highway rides to work and the odd trail on weekends thanks in advance btw

The higher seat is why I chose the KLX 300. I stand 5’9” and weight 210lbs. When I stand over the KLX, I’m on my toes. As soon as I sit down and put weight on the seat, I’m almost flat footed.
The other reason why I chose the KLX was the 6th gear compared to the 5 on the XT. The suspension is better on the KLX as well.
I like the larger gas tank on the XT, but for what I want to do, the seat height was a little too short. It does have a little bit more ground clearance than the KLX. Still, the suspension on the KLX makes up for the inch difference.
Both are great bikes! Again, the main reason I chose the KLX was simply ergonomics. For my height, it just fit better.

I'm 52 and considering getting one of these. Not a new rider just wanting a light dual sport for arount town and offroad. Had an FJR1300 so this will be a lot different. Nice review. Bike looks great.

I'm 5'5". If I can tippy toe it, I'm good. The TW is a lil lower, but being wider is no different for me.
I'm looking at the TW, DR, and the Klx230. It's tank capacity is 2+. Those 3 are close in price.
Im liking the XT. It would be my first Efi bike. I enjoy and am proud of mastering a carburetor. Lol

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those listed three. Personally, I like the suspension and the 6th gear on the KLX, for me, that tips the scale towards it. Just wish it had a little larger fuel tank.
The TW is a mountain goat!!! My brother in law has one and I rode it for two straight days in a camping trip. That little bike goes anywhere, ha, just not very fast, especially on the highway.
that engine is just about as good as it gets for fun off roading, nice size, balanced crank, air cooled, well stepped gearbox, the rest of the bike is also good for anyone wanting a leisurely trip around the fields and green lanes, and it has got ample oomph for commuting and B road cruising, who wants to ride a motorbike on a motorway so the lack of top end isn't an issue for most people,
I'm crazy enough to use the freeways in Southern California with mine a simple gear change and I was pushing through the urban tangle like a ballet dancer. Just don't cruise past 70mph.
I wish there were higher CC bikes with a similar seat height to this. I am a firm believer that being able to put one's feet on the ground inspires a ton of confidence in super slow going obstacles and yucky muddy situations or even adventuring with a passenger. Seems the KTM 390 adv is about the closest when it comes to modern EFI bikes.
I own a XT 250, both it new in 2019, it already have 9500 km on the clock. I am 62 years old and appreciate the low seat hight. I drive bike for 40 years, Honda's, Suzuki's, Yamaha's, and all of them were good. The XT 250 is my last bike, I like it and will drive it as long as I can. What about till I am 75 years...🤔😑
Used to have an xt550 in the early 1980's same seat height as the xt 250. It was great.

To me, when seated the seat on the XT feel a little wider and more comfortable than the seat of the CRF250L and many other dualsports. They are all narrow at the front making it easier to reach the ground.
The "seat concepts" aftermarket replacement is even wider and softer in the sitting area and still the same for the legs.
I'm 61 years old and have raced mx in my way younger years. I wanted a bike to literally putt around cow trailing. I wanted the crf300l but didn't want to pay for it. Woundup getting a tw200 and a xt225. I think I made the perfect choice. Just wish they were fuel injected.

Yeah, they're all good. A guy who is 6'1" will pick one bike over the other and a guy who is 5'7" will pick a different bike. Riders always make excuses for why one bike is better than the other when it really, usually, comes down to brand bias or styling or price or whatever.
So I am 6 foot 220lbs. What bike would I be comfortable with? Which one are you comfortable with?

Don't think there's much debate if you're talking under five figures. For a shorter rider 2 or 3 inches is a world of difference to another bike... Fastest ? Nope.. Best suspension ? Nope.. But of ridden normally ( if there is such a thing ) It's a great bike for a beginner or an experienced rider that wants to ride on the street for short periods and just jump off on a power line, field, or dirt/gravel country road and not be in any particular hurry. Slap on a 14T front sprocket and you almost have a trials bike and still do 60 mph on the street w/out a problem. The low end torque is amazing. Plus 2, 3, 4th gears are much more usable off road. A couple more ponies, 20 lbs less weight, a tad better suspension and this would be a no brainer for a lot more folks.. And yes it can be a serious dirt bike with nothing more than afront sprocket, a little weight taken off with non essentials and not expecting KTM suspension. Chances are you'll get to the same places they do..
I've recently come to the conclusion I want to do a bit of offroad, but don't want to do the whole truck-trailer, loading and unloading bikes BS involved in pure dirt riding. The XT250 has really caught my eye. I'm a shorty so it's made for me, but it still has really great ground clearance for being so low. Also EFI so no worrying about dumping fuel and drowning out carbs in the inevitable tip overs.
It's a fun bike. You should test ride one if you haven't.

@@airadaimagery692 Same. I actually bought my current bike from the place he got the loaner XT back when I lived in Oregon. They are the most lenient dealer I've ever been to as far as allowing test rides. They will hand you the keys to anything on the lot and tell you to have fun, be back in a half. I have to BEG to be allowed a test ride on non-Harleys here in California.
My 2008 is immaculate and only has 5000 miles on it.Simple,basic and has run without problems since day one.Do not hesitate and go buy one.

Favorite pony in my stables. If they would bump it up to 300 and toss in a 6th gear I'd consider it flawless.
I just got a 09 xt250
1 owner=6000 miles and excellent garage kept condition from my stepfather. Hasn’t been rode in 4yr besides cranking up.
And I’ll tell you from a person who is now 45 and hasn’t rode in 30 yr,basically a beginner again it’s been a great bike. Backroads and trails are it’s home. The only drawback I have is the seat WILL hurt your butt after a couple of hours riding. Recommend a cushion or a softer seat of somewhat IF it can be found or made.
Other than that the bike does perfect.
Just bought it same color 2022 and wish I got something else. It’s not the best in super rugged terrain. Mainly the front wheel has a mind of its own, and the bike doesn’t track well unless it’s fire road smooth. I am hoping a tire change will fix it. It’s great on the road tho.
Can the 2008 plastics fit on the current year? They are my favorite and the first of that years redesign.

Road Dork I’m so glad I did not buy a XT. I’m a bigger guy and really fell in love a few years back watching a ol guy travel all over the US and up to Prudhoe bay. So look out back roads ! P.S. setting up the 2018 WR basically stock. With a new skidder and shelving and furniture. Around Bend Oregon out!
The XT250 is one of the funnest bikes I have ever ridden. I owned one for a couple years and it's definitely plenty capable for beginner/intermediate riders. The low end grunt is what really sets it apart from other bikes like the CRF250L, it will tractor up just about anything you point it at. It is a smaller bike though in terms of seat height and overall size, so if your a bigger rider can be a bit cramped.
How does it compare to the CSC TT250 you used to own? I shopped between the two as a first bike for my teenage daughter and found a used XT250 for a lower price than a new TT250, so that's the way I went. I feel like I probably made the correct choice, but haven't ridden the TT250. The XT250 convinced me that smaller is better, so I traded in my KLR650 for a KLX300 and now the XT250 sits in the garage or in the toy hauler next to my KLX300 as a buddy bike for friends and family. I take them both to the woods and ride them both an equal amount. The KLX seems more capable, the XT seems more "fun" if that makes any sense.
@@jwaller1327 Makes total sense! The XT250 and the TT250 are pretty similar, but the quality on the XT250 I think is much higher. The XT also has a bit more power and the gears are spaced out better. New to new, it’s hard to beat the value of the TT250. It really is an awesome bike for the price. But when comparing the used market to a new TT250, I’d choose a good condition XT hands down especially for trail riding.
What pisses me off to no end is any bike that has a low seat height is a "beginner" bike (i.e. slow, weak, poor suspension, etc.). Can't ONE company make just ONE dual sport that has a low seat height for those who aren't beginners, but have a short inseam (26, 27, 28 inches). Having a 27" inseam sucks for motorcycle riding.
I'm preparing to pull the trigger tomorrow and buy a '23 XT250.
I was offered a brochure outlining the Y.E.S. warranty: $500/4 yrs.
I believe Yamaha to be a quality brand but am not sure if I should splurge the extra cash if all I'm going to do it ride on my 13 acres and maybe local tooling around.

I'm 5ft8 have an XT 250. It's a wonderful bike and i love it's capabilities. It lacks on the highway though amd leaves me wanting more grunt.
I rode a DR-Z 400 with the 1.75 inch lowering link today and it was totally manageable.
Isn’t there an aftermarket seat with more foam to raise the height of sitting???

It's like you read my mind. I'm looking for a small dual sport to go with my Super T; something I can easily load in my truck and go beat the hell out of. At only 5'7", the DRZ is very tall and a lot to handle. There's a new KLX 300 near me but also a very lightly used 2020 XT250 near me that I could get for about $2k less all-in than the KLX.

Eddy - I own a DRZ400 and I'm looking for a bike that will be more playful and easier to ride with along with my kids (5/9 on CRF dirtbikes). Can you compare your thoughts on the XT vs DRZ400 since you appear to have them both?
@@KenRupin oh no I only owned a KLX300 in that class. Great bike, but didn’t keep it long. The DRZ was too tall even in the showroom. I sold my Super T and have a T7 now and couldn’t be happier.

thank you soooo much for the channel, you really seem to be in my head lately lol..... i am looking for a second bike for 2 tracks, dirt roads and very light commuting (no expressway). How would you compare the KLX 230 to the XT 250, i really like the simplicity and lightish weight of these two bikes in particular, unfortunately i'm 6' and 275lbs......
They are really, really similar so it really comes down to which one feels right or which one you can get a better deal on. I think you'll be uncomfortable on the XT at your height, though. I'd encourage you to check out the CRF or KLX300 instead.
@@DorkintheRoad thank you for taking the time to answer me, i have both dealers near me but the Kawi dealer seems to be a barren wasteland every time i stop in, Yam dealer has 2 XT's and TW's but i agree and think they are a bit too short legged for my big ass. I may wind up trying to track down a used, injected, KLX250, even though i really liked the idea of air cooled. Wife and i enjoy OHV parks in PA, where she likes to take out her Honda FatCat shes had since childhood and play, so i don't need a lot of power to keep up there, plus we live in the sticks so if i wanted to i could make my 12 mile work "commute" pretty much all dirt roads lol. thanx again brother and take care!

I actually filmed this about two months ago. I'm wearing my Klim Carlsbad gear pretty much full time now. The Marrakesh is great for a wide range of temperatures but it isn't waterproof by any means, and we get a lot of rain in the winter around here. ;)
at 6'2 the smaller seat height concerns me.. how does it compare to the Kawasaki KLX 230? (i'll be using it as a farm bike, requiring road registration between paddocks)
The XT is designed for shorter riders. The KLX will fit a taller rider like you better.
We all come here for the same reasons, motorcycles, accessories, trail riding, and honest reviews. I have a question for all of you fellow riders. I just purchased an XT250 as my first dual sport. I am just getting into trail riding and am looking for my dual sport helmet. I am looking for one that won't break the bank but will still offer good protection. The ones I have seen are typically between $150-$225. They have all been name brand DOT helmets but are of course their more budget friendly models. What have all of you used now or in the past that would fit the bill for my first helmet, as I don't believe my half helmet would. Thank you all for your input. Also, looking for budget friendly pants, jacket, and boots as I am starting from ground zero in this adventure.

I've come to the conclusion that once I sell her DRZ125 I'm just gonna buy whatever TW200, XT250, XT225, DR200, or CRF230L I can get the best deal on. Basically gonna find her something with a low seat height that will be good for forest exploring and eventually motocamping trips together when she gets her license in 18 months.

When I bought my DSport bike I chose between these 2 bikes. Took the XT for ride height as I could stand flat footed at a traffic light. If I was taller I would have chosen the Versys as it is more highway capable. Loved my Suzuki VStrom, but heavy and crappy to ride around town as I was always on my tows like a balarina.
That tire hugging front fender was clearly designed by someone who has never ridden down a muddy clay based trail. That front tire will quickly turn into a very bad ski when it's stops turning.
One of the biggest lessons ive learned from watching dozens of reviews, NEVER buy a go-pro.
Im mainly looking for commuting dualsport its not got enough power for me, unless it has huge torque then yea its great.

They're really, really similar. Hard to say really, but the 230 was more comfortable for me because it's a little taller...other than that they're basically the same, at least on a test ride.
I'm on the fence. I'm a short rider, like the bigger gas tank 0n the xt250 & the looks of it,but I heard around 60 or 65 it gets the speed wobbles. The 2022 klx230 is 32.7 seat hight. Whit abs. I have a little highway before I can get to my trails. So maybe the klx230 with the 6 gear there be no speed wobbles. What do you think?@@DorkintheRoad ,
@@TheXTLife klx230 owner here; I've reached the top speed limiter several times, regularly cruise at 60/65 and have never had speed wobbles. The wind pushing me around is the only thing I've felt and that's to be expected due to its' light weight

Same on my 22 XT250. I got it up to a constant 75mph on the highway (meaning I was going around 70mph, the spedo is like 4/5mph off). Nothing but wind to fight. Stock tires.

Just got a call from dealer after being on a waiting list for two years, and finally putting a deposit down for one of the two they had allocations for back in November, my dealer says my 2022 XT 250 will be here this month !
The only two things is I wish it had a sixth gear and an actual fuel gauge instead of just a dummy light .

I hate stop lights/signs. I just barely get one foot down. It's a heck of a cushy ride but the seat is a brick. I'm 54 now and I've always wanted a XT so maybe I'll trade mine off.

I had a 2005 Honda CRF 250X , and a 2015 KTM 350 EXC-F , and I sold both of those bikes largely due to the tall seat heights ( and frequent service intervals ) when I was younger it didn’t bother me so much to climb up on those tall bikes , but I’m 58 now , and I’m just trying to accommodate myself as much as possible to keep riding . Eliminating those risk factors are key to staying in the game as we age lol 😂

I would say it's an affordable, fun,
light weight dual sport (under 300lbs wet, is not
bad at all for a dual sport).
. Of all the dual sports available, this is one of the

I would buy a bunch of these if it only had more
hp, or if there was a seamless engine swap for it.

Having owned a CRF250L. I can say the Japanese built XT250 is far above it in build quality.
I did my Advanced rider safe course on one of these, passed too. I quite liked it. Shame about the footage.
If you had to choose, would you pick the klx230 or the xt250 ?
If you are 5'10" or taller buy the klx otherwise the XT. I am 5'10" with an XT. Great bike but the bike gets "small" when you start travelling 20ml+ stretches. If I had to buy now I would go for the klx 300. It just has that little more power and top end to make it more freeway friendly.

When riding a small bike you stretch out and sit on the back of the seat. It looks dumb but that's how you fit comfortably.
The thing this bike needs is tubeless tires so you do not get stranded in the middle of nowhere.
I put green slime in mine. At least it will hopefully get me home if I pick up a nail or screw.
I think the xt250 don't get a much love as it should. It seems way better than a tw200.
GOPRO 9? They absolutely SUCK. I can't believe it. I lost mine actually and I'm fucking happy as a lark. I'll get a 10 now. You just cannot trust them even with the flash and the updates they made a fucking LEMON. I like the XT for a new bike. It's sharp. I have a DT250 now.

@@DorkintheRoad Give us a good review on it when you get it. A lot of people are having issues with the gopros shutting off. My GoPro didn’t record any audio at all. That’s probably a good thing 😆
