    I always laugh how everyone says little bikes like the XT and TW are “wife bikes” or girl bikes or whatever (which is dumb because I know female riders who make me look like a newb after 15-16 years of riding haha) but they’ll turn around and say how much fun a Grom is because it’s so small and light and nimble. Dual sports are so tall, I think anyone under 5'10 would have a better time on an xt250 or a dr200. Plus that's really all you need in the dirt. I can't even use all of the Power of the crf300 because it just spins the rear wheel in first and second. I definitely like Excess power on the street but in the dirt you're very traction limited and I think the smaller displacement bikes are better

    I'd like to test ride a CRF300. I bought a used XT with 2300 miles a few months ago for $4k. I immediately had the oil changed and put a new chain on it and adjusted/lubed it. It's been a great little ride so far. I haven't rode much because it's still winter where I'm at but, soon enough, summer will be here and I'll be exploring some serious terrain in the grizzly country.
    The XT looks great, it's a proven design, is made in Japan, and it's light and approachable. The turning radius is also excellent. I wonderful option for riders 5 ft 8 and under. I am 5 ft 8 175lbs and I hit 71 today and had a little more throttle to go... it did feel squirly at that speed. Honestly, anything over 62 was a bit much. I think the cruising sweet spot in 5th gear is about 55mph.

I am 5'9" and bought a KTM 250 and it was fast but not fun like the old days. I took it to a KTM suspension shop and said I want to lower it 4 inches. They said you wont be able to do triple jumps. Tough choice for me. The single track here is steep and gnarly mountain trails often far from civilization. On those trails I would feel better on a more trail worthy and bigger fuel range XT. I love the Honda engine and gearbox in my CB300R though. I would have got a CRF300 instead of that CB300 if it existed at the time but it is kinda fun to take it where it shouldn't be able to go. I completely agree with if one bike only it should be a CRF300L. Plus at least another $500 on lowering link and seat to make the CRF low enough for me to ride it safely. The long legs in the family belong to my wife and I wasn't about to ride down the city streets having to do a circus act at every red light. We’ll see which dealer is willing to cut me a better deal Yamaha or Honda. I really don’t like how the Honda is made in Thailand. While the Yamaha is made in Japan. I just feel like you get a better deal for your money having your stuff made in Japan, most of the time. I also know it’s been hard to get your hands on a 300 L. If I can get a fair price on the XT, actually get one, I don’t mind getting the air cooled Japanese bike. In fact, I prefer that. Either one of these is going to be an upgrade from my old 450.

      Yeah I sold mine and ended up buying my dad's old Dr 200 which gets me around just fine if I want to do anything in the dirt. I definitely like the shorter bikes better in the dirt for my casual riding. Maybe the CRF 300 LS would change my mind. I definitely like how much torque that engine had but it's not like it was quick enough to be a fun street bike in my opinion. So at that point why not just have a cheaper more proven Japanese bike like a Suzuki dr200 or a Kawasaki 230 or an xt250. I think those are pretty good choices given they do have more availability

      @@TheCoolestCourier I see eye to eye with that. I think all Suzukis are made in Japan which does matter. I've seen videos of quality issues on the CRFs like thermostats falling out on brand new bikes etc here on YT. I like the DR200 and looked at it but I'm buying new so I want EFI. I never really had problems with carbs all my life though. I just start them up once a month in the winter.
      Nailed it on the CRF bikes not being out of these other bikes league, all in the same class. All of the small dualsports are full of compromises. I can't imagine the CRF300L being a fun bike on the street, just usable like the rest. The internet would beg to differ though. I'd do the same that you did if I got a good deal on a DR200. The only bikes I ever felt would be nearly out of the league of these small dualsports is the DRZ400 and the WR250R. I think those two offer something special, luggability and dirt bike suspension, respectively. All of these bikes used bring too much money for me, I'm sure you got good money out of the 300L. It'll depend on who gives me the better deal the Yamaha dealer or Honda.

    I have NEVER spent $7,000 for any motorcycle! $2,500 is my high cap. I paid $2,000 for my XT225, with a 6 spd and it's 40 lbs lighter! That's EIGHT 5 lb bags of sugar strapped to your bike to equal the CRF300L weight! On paper, the DRZ400 would be my choice. But at 5'4 the TW200 and XT225/250 are my best choices. But I prefer the ergos on the TW and the engine and transmission in the XT. So this winter I plan to make a TW225 6 spd! I've owned the KLR650, F650GS DAKAR, and the pre '96 DR650; they didn't work out. A '96 or newer DR650 can be adequately lowered, but I found a DR350 that I think will address my issues: enough power for highway stints, 286 lb wet weight, 6 spd transmission, and the stock seat can be lowered to 33", and you can still lower the padding in the seat. So shorter riders, the DP bikes from easiest/lightest up: TW200, XT225/250, DR350 lowered, DR650 lowered. Please ad to my short list, if you think of another.

      I agree, I thought it was too expensive for what it was. I was able to sell it and get all of my money back. And actually make profit on my xsr700. Put those both towards my xsr 900 and couldn't be happier. If you're good at fixing bikes you can still get them cheap here in California but if you want a decent dual sport even an old one is pretty much $3,500 to start

    I've been looking for something to move to when I get rid of my ancient Suzuki GS450. I grew up riding ATVs and dirt bikes, and have wanted to get a dual sport for a while now. I'm leaning towards the XT250, but I need to sit on both first. I'm not getting another bike where I can't flat foot it. I don't care if it's an inferior bike otherwise, and I'm not interested in messing up the geometry of the bike by lowering it. If I can flat foot both at 5'9", I'll want to go with the 300 but whichever dealer will give me the better cash deal out the door will probably get the sale.

    • @TheCoolestCourier
      @TheCoolestCourier  3 года назад +2

      Yeah the xt250 is quite a bit lower. At that height I think it would be perfect. You're tall enough to man handle that bike around but not too tall to where its uncomfortable

    • @DaddySizeIt
      @DaddySizeIt 3 года назад

      @@TheCoolestCourier That's good to know. It'll get a lot of city duty, mostly picking up food...hard to find trails around here. And I despise slightly leaning over on bikes at signs to put a foot down. I'll take the "worse bike" any day to make sure my next one isn't like that. This video was great BTW, the seat height really is a big deal. But the XT250 is also air-cooled, which where I live (Chicago) is not a problem, probably better/simpler. We just don't have enough hot days for it to matter. Only requirement was flat footing and EFI.

      Coming from the viewpoint as an owner of both, both are great bikes. I miss my xt. It got stolen 5 months after i bought it. When i got my Honda, it was completely world changing. The xt does not have near the suspension capabilities of the honda. Minor bumps in the road, gravel, you name it, the honda deals with it much better. Depending on body weight, the seat height on the honda is super approachable. Getting the leg over is one thing, but once you put weight on it, the suspension will compress and lower the height about an inch and a half. Go with the honda

      @@DaddySizeIt XT250 was my first bike in 2017. The dealer was pushing crf250 but, I wasn't comfortable on it since I was only able to tipie toe on it with my 5'10" and 31" inseam. On XT, I was very flat footed and could walk it all day long. On the other hand, XT eventually turned out to be lil cramped for leg room which was quite stressfull on my knees on 100+ miles trips. CRF feels like smoother bike as I tried on friend's but, I lost count how many times I crashed XT on rocky terrain, just straightened enough shifter or hand guards to get me home to straighten properly and be ready for another ride. I don't think water cooled CRF would survive some of those crashes or I'm sure there would be far more damage. XT reaches 70mph comfortably and may even hit 80 with light rider. I only did once with my 200lbs with gear.
