  • In this video I go over Salomon's 5L option for their new ADV skin hydration vest and give my thoughts. I also snagged a custom quiver for storing trekking poles that I test out.

    I've ran in this vest for hundreds of training miles, a hundred miler and a 50 mile race. My experience with the soft flasks has been that they slide right in. What I do is blow air into the bottle until it's tight and have zero issues sliding them in. That process takes around 5 seconds per bottle. Give it a try.

    Coming from someone who went with the 12 liter, you are right that it's a bit overkill for almost any race. However, the 12 is perfect for long, FKT attempts, where you are either unsupported, or supported but with a long distance between possible aid areas.

    A larger vest can always be packed to a smaller size using the compression straps but a smaller vest cannot be expanded to hold more stuff.

    I have no problems with puting flask into front pockets. What you need to do is to grab both a flask pocket as well as a pocket that is over it and strech them. If you strech only flask pocket then there is problem. If both, there in none. No trick needed.

    I just picked up this vest to replace my older ADV skin 5 vest with the hope of having a better way to carry poles, after fiddling around with all the shock cord loops (back, chest) I ended up just sliding the poles up and under the front cords and carrying them flat against my chest. Worked pretty well actually. I think I'll give the quiver a try as it was a bit annoying to get a drink with the poles on my chest.

    Hi. The red cords of the Quiver, you should place each cord on the right and left side of the Quiver. After placing the poles, tight the lock and the cords embrace the bottom of the poles and they don't move and keed very much in place. A really nice piece of engineering this Custom Quiver! :) Thanks for the great review! :)

    Bit difficult fitting mandatory gear in the 5ltr and even if you manage to the vest will be pretty uncomfortable, where as the 12lt fits practically everything comfortably. I use my 12ltr for short trail runs and 50mile + ultras and works fine for both

    Nice review. It helped me get an idea on sizing. I'm 5'10" and bounce around between 160-165lbs with a 39" chest. I've read a handful of people mentioning to size up as rumor has it Saloman's vests supposedly run small like their running shirts. After watching your video I feel confident in my decision to go with a medium versus a large. Thank you.

    • @Thekidisalright

      Same here, I am glad I didn’t size up, I realize it of people who encourage people to size up don’t actually know how hydration vest suppose to fit.

    Great review! I bought the quiver a year ago to use with the previous generation of vest that it was (I think) made for. I have exactly the same difficulty attaching it to the vest and have to force the metal brackets though the sleeves too. Then it works ok. I agree that the quiver itself works well but don’t like that it puts the vest “off balance” which results in the opposite edge of the vest to rub my neck and generates chaffing. I have stopped using it because of that and am still looking for a good solution to carry the poles on very long runs...

      I've found the Ultimate Direction utility belt works extremely well to carry poles. Not quite as easy to stow & pull out as with the Salomon quiver, but I like the belt a lot. You may want to check this option: ultimatedirection.com/utility-belt/

    Good review! Why no just dump the front flasks and just use a 1.5l or 2l bladder in the rear. Use the front pockets just for snacks/gels, phone etc

      1 1 bottles allow for easier quicker filling at aid stations plus you can carry different hydration in bottles. Raidlite makes a 600cc bottle versus 500 (they fit the Solomon vests) . As explained bottles are difficult to insert with vest on. With it off it’s fairly easy. Raidlight vest are easier to insert bottles. Also their pack has pole loops in front that are very easy to us. I have the same Black Diamond poles as in this video and they are easy and quick to insert in these loops. Iam experimenting with adding front loops to my Solomon packs. The quiver looks like another thing to mess with.

    I have the latest Salomon Active Skin5 which doesn't have the quiver loops. Where do the loops lie on the ADV skin 5 ? Are they at the seam at the top of the shoulder ? Hopefully I can sew a couple of loops in and get it to work. For the flasks, I've found if you just loosen the front bungie you can shake the flasks and they'll fall in. The key thing is don't fill them 100%. Fill them to the fill line and suck the air out at the top so they aren't rigid.

    • @pentachronic
      @pentachronic 3 года назад

      Oh and to fix the flasks from flopping around I've added another bungie and spring toggle/cinch to loc them in place at the tops. There is a small loop at the top of the flask pocket at the front on mine. I cow-hitched my shock-cord loop to that. I then put that over the top of the flask and cinch it down. Works a treat.

    I just bought an ADV Skin 5 vest and I had ZERO problem getting the soft flasks in and out. This is a complaint I simply do not understand and think it’s completely unwarranted. It’s also something that wouldn’t exactly change from person to person. I have another pack with similar bottles, and no problem there either. It’s a bit absurd. Also, Salomon rates this vest as drying “very fast” so I have a very hard time believing it’s “unbreathable” or I wouldn’t have bought it-it’s only made from the lightest, most fast drying materials 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️. This is by far the most seemingly inaccurate review of this pack I’ve seen. Then again, I still need to try mine. 🤷‍♀️

    I just received my Adv Skin 5 today and followed the Mens sizing guide. I measured my chest to 35" so I ordered the small which fits a 34.5-38" chest. When I tried it on, it feels a bit snug! Is this how it's suppose to feel? The vest also feels like it rides a bit high on my body and closer to my armpits. I'm new to wearing vests so I'm just not sure. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks.

    • @Thekidisalright
      @Thekidisalright 4 года назад +2

      It is how it’s suppose to be, ride high and close to the body, as long as it’s not tight to the point it obstruct your breathing, just rem this is a hydration vest and not a backpack.

      @@Thekidisalright Thanks but I've already returned mine ever since and bought an Osprey Vest instead. I love it! I would've kept the Salomon if the fit was better. Salomon fits more like a shirt which is why it would be considered more comfortable.

      If you are not sure then go for the bigger size. You can find a Salomon size chart for the vests online. My chest size is just at the high end of the Medium but the size M is way too small. I had to go back for a size L.
