When McDonalds Ruined Batman

- Tim Burton's Batman 1989 movies usher in a new age of Superhero movies. Batman was cool again. But also dark and weird and hard to market to children. Warner Brothers were underwhelmed with the performance and reception of Batman Returns but they weren't the only ones. Big brands like McDonalds were also unimpressed and helped paved the way for a different more family friendly version of Batman

exposing a 10 year old to tv talk shows is way more offensive and scarring imo, much less having them be in one as a sock puppet
I would make a joke about that.. but I think I would get put on a list. .. .. Well another list. 😂
So disappointing that Danny never responded, that would've been really fun to hear from him!
The big Warner Brother, Yakko, must have had a talk with Danny and offered to pay for college in exchange for his silence.
I feel bad for the 10 year old movie critic dude. There's no way those were his words, it sounds like coached stuff from an adult at the height of the Tipper Gore style "wont someone please think of the children" type shit that was going on. Glad to see he managed to grow up and have sex and have a family apparently.
It’s the same crap move moms for liberty uses.
Same. He was absolutely being fed lines. I wonder if he got in trouble as school or something and his parents were basically blackmailing him to save himself.
Kids aren’t that coherent
@@goldenfiberwheat238’total attack against kids’ I don’t remember ever viewing myself as a protected class when I was a kid lol.
@@ZedQue I’m agreeing with you
I was Danny’s age when I saw this movie and for me the most disturbing part was the existential dread I felt when Catwoman said she’d love to live in a big mansion with Bruce, but she just couldn’t live with herself. I still got all the toys though.
Damn I didn't get that part until much older. What stuck in my mind was always Penguin and Shriek's death. Oh and that weird remote control batmobile part for whatever reason.
When I saw this as child much younger than Danny. I remember my biggest concern was Selina had been resurrected by stray cats. It didn’t even shock me that she just got killed by her boss😅
Yeah sure you were 10 thinking about existential dread 😂 sounds just like Danny making shit up
That comment is what Danny’s parents told me to write.
I too encounter existential dread when I hear bullshit excuses that the love interest gives to the hero protagonist
I don't understand how Danny's parents weren't arrested for letting their 10 year old see a PG-13 film.
Ok, that’s a bit much mate

It's 2023, you can't assume
because everyone did back in the day, watch films like robocop and terminator and then produce toys for the kids.
Thug Life.
I want to point out that I had Robocop toys as a kid.
And though I didn't have any, I was advertised toys from Terminator, Alien, and Predator.
So at least we know all of those are kid's movies 😄
You can still get alien and predator action figures surprisingly
I got an early Christmas present. It's a figure from the 80s Rambo action figure line from Coleco. I was younger than Danny was there when I saw Rambo. It's a movie. Don't get too upset.
Also Jurassic Park.
i feel bad for that kid... having to repeat all of his moms complaints as if they were his own... must have been really uncomfortable....
It looked like he was reading from a teleprompter
I was 8 years old when Batman Returns came out and I was flabbergasted.
I freacking loved the movie and it's still one of my childhood movies!
That kid sounded like he was being forced to read a script for a hostage video.
I know the whole “making a fuck load of toys whenever a film comes out for kids” marketing technique is very insidious, but god damn did I love it as a child back then…
It’s the only reason some franchises, like Transformers and He-Man even exist. And why any of them get new modern series or movies made. It’s all done to sell toys and merch.
Me too and I didn't even buy all these licenced toys. I sticked to my Transformers and Lego sets, but I loved when I watched the commercials for all that cool stuff. It instigated my imagination even though I didn't have the toys.
@@c.kiousis3663facts I just thought it was cool as a kid like when they used to advertise movies all over supermarkets I remember when shrek came out they made a massive deal about it and had blown up shrek and donkeys everywhere that’s big core memories for me
Imagine if this happened with the dark knight. People said it was too dark and macDonalds pulled out their support for the franchise. So WB fires Nolan, Christian Bale drops out, and they hire someone new to make a family friendly TDKR where Batman has to stop Bane and Talia from robbing banks and blowing up Gotham with a giant cartoon bomb with a fuse.
Would've been far better than whatever the hell that garbage dark knight rises was

Defect to Burger King.
Damn I didn't realize how much I missed this type of video on this channel. I adore Caravan of Garbage but this felt real nice and fresh. Hope we continue to get these more regularly!
As a kid, I was disappointed in Batman Returns...only because it was no where near as good or cool as the first one.
I still feel that way.
I was 9 years old when Batman Returns hit theaters, my grandmother took me to see it, and it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen, I loved every minute of it, the music, the visuals, I went home and built myself a giant cape that could spread out like Batman's wing-glider. Thank you grandma!
I swear parental outrage to movies And video games has always been full of crap
Also thank you Mcdonald's for being the catalyst to the abomination known as Batman & Robin
Still it was a little disingenuous to market this movie for small children and older fans do have accept Batman is meant for all ages. For me this movie is more disapointing since it wastes Michael so much.
@@li-limandragon9287so frank millers work is for all ages? Arkham asylum is for all ages? A robin being beat to near death with a crowbar, then exploded with dynamite... that is all ages? Or maybe when he got crippled by having his back broken... thats all ages? Or the killing joke... i guess thats all ages? Please get real. Batman started out as a mature character who got bent into the adam west cheese it became, then remolded itself back into its original noir form... and burton is instrumental in trying to return the character to its original spirit in the public consciousness. WB and McDonalds fucked over the fans out of greed and fear.
Yes, thank you McDonald's because we wouldn't have gotten the Nolan trilogy if it wasn't for Batman & Robin
Frogs in a boiling pot
We got Batman Returns because 89 Batman was so popular/successful, and Burton got all that creative control.
Likewise, we got Batman & Robin because Batman Forever was so popular/successful, and Shumacher got all that creative control.
So maybe it's just good business practice for execs to exert a little more control on these eccentric directors, hold the leash a little tighter
Wow what a horrible thing WB did! Thankfully corporate greed never ruined a DC property since then.
🤭
The best part about this video is Danny DeVito talking about one of the best cutaway gags that we'll never see in Always Sunny. 😭
Awesome work James.
Here's a parenting from the 90's story.
My mam brought my brother and I to a small local cinema to see this when it was released. The theatre was about a 5 min walk from our house. I was 6, and my brother was 3. My brother didn't really like the movie from the start but the scene where Penguin bit that dudes nose absolutely sent him. He went into hysterics. Screaming like a lunatic. My mam end up taking him home and left me, a 6 year old to stay in theatre and watch the movie. She came back 30 mins later after dropping him home to my dad.
8:30 TIL Whenever there's a cross-promotion it does not mean either participating company actually promotes the other company's product
The kid critic is TEN, it's rated PG-13. If you're going to act all sanctimonious, then maybe don't send a kid that's under the age limit to review it.
This was the first PG-13 movie I was allowed to watch. I absolutely loved it even if Penguin biting the guy’s nose and killing one of his own henchmen freaked me out way too much. We had tons of toys and merch, including the McDonalds toys and cups. I had friends who had even more stuff.
Such a treat when we get these types of videos from this channel. James’ writing and voice over is always so engaging. Thanks James + the editing super-team
So Danny definitely memorized a speech written by his parents (or another adult) to grift right?
I'm sure that's universally agreed upon?
I loved this movie as a small kid. I was much younger than Danny, and didn't cry like a little bee'otch.
I get what you mean, I was only 6 when I saw it in a movie theater and I remember being disturbed by Penguin biting that guy's nose and towards the end when it looks like black blood is coming out of the Penguin's mouth when he came out of the water like that, but other then that I liked it when I watched it for the first time and I remember wanting to see it again (those 2 parts didn't tramautize me and I didn't cry over it, it was more like I didn't expect to see it and got use to those scenes after seeing the movie more then once).
I know he's Australian, but when James said "tortiLa", a little bat-shaped tortilla piece of me died
"Parents trust McDonalds" LOL I wasn't ready for that and raspberried my coffee on my desk
I watched Batman Returns religiously as a 6-10 year old and I thought it was pretty badass not scary
Wow, hadn't thought about that Batman Forever burger commercial at 10:04 in decades but I remembered every beat of it. One of those hidden memories.
7:34 to 8;03 Absolutely my dude. Truer words have never been spoken.
Hypocritical parental outrage in the US is a tale as old as time. We’re against this violence in a fictional movie but not all the violence perpetuated by our government.
As long as the violence our government does is far away and we don’t have to see it.
Yeah, Its flaring up again with gta 6
@@thepeps101Which is crazy because aren’t the parents of children who would be exposed to GTA VI in the age range of people who would’ve taken work off on the day GTA V came out in 2013?
@@thepeps101 I mean... sort of but not really. What those people are really flared up about is a dark-skinned female protagonist. But they are too cowardly to own those opinions in public.

"A total attack against kids!" Those are without a doubt the words of a 10 year old in 1992. I'm guessing Danny had to be homeschooled after this show aired which would explain why he doesn't have a social media presence.
Well considering he's now 40+ that could explain why he's not got a current social media presence, and he probably is on Facebook and shit, or was at a time but who knows
Funnily enough, I was rewatching the Batman Returns Caravan of Garbage episode today, and when this video was mentioned in it, I thought to myself, "Hey, this episode came out like 8 months ago, did he ever release the video about the McDonald's controversy?" and low and behold, this turned up.
"Air hockey and cigarettes" 😂😂 James I think you're my favourite creator, thank you and Maso for making me laugh for years.
"Parents trust McDonald's!" Well that was their mistake XD
And this was post-Watergate. People couldn't have been actually so naive.
I was in High School and I vividly remember every one of those commercials you showed. The one in particular, with the bat boat shooting the dock with the villains on it, was apparently a deeply buried core memory, and when I saw it in this video I flashed back so hard that I briefly reinhabited the body and time of my younger self. It was weird, but nice. I even smelled my living room.
I love these video essays! While still being entertaining, they're informative about a topic I find fascinating, but wouldn't necessarily stumble upon on my own. My favorite is the one about the stolen Spider Man suits.
The editing is phenomenal as always, and I know these probably take more time than a Caravan of Garbage, so I wanted to voice my appreciation!
The 90s were kinda crazy. They had toys for kids based even on R-rated franchises like Terminator and Alien.
I really want to see the commercial where Batman violently apprehends the Hamburglar and mistakes Ronald McDonald for the Joker and subdues him with excessive force. 😂
I love how “#StarWars” and “#Ahsoka” are the only things tagged in this video and they’re never mentioned whatsoever 😂
It's wild to hear about "the outrage" now that I'm older! 😂 I literally have nothing but amazing memories of Batman and Batman Returns!
I was a small child of 19 when this came out and I can echo Danny's words, I too was horrified, disgusted and also a bit horny.
I was more traumatized by McDonald's food and that fuckin' clown than I was by Batman Returns
Except for the nose biting scene, that fucked me up too
I remember this controversy and how at 11 I thought Danny was so so controlled FREE DANNY!!!
Hot Take: Lets all agree that Ronald McDonald & his nightmarish posse is possibly more terrifying than all of the villians in Batman Returns 😂😂
So of course let's send them the kiddies to McD's
Also as a Canuck, i thank you for mentioning Canada 🇨🇦, so many channels when talking about Box office, trends etc.
The focus is always just on the US/US Box Office.
Plot twist: Danny was named after Danny Devito 🤯
There's a weird part of me that misses just getting toys shoved down my throat as being a by-product of whatever I loved as a kid, Im glad to hear that toy sales were huge for the latest TMNT,
Alan Moore is one of my favourite writers but his stuff was baloney compared to my 8 year old self's brain while playing with Spider-Man AND He-Man AND Batman.. AND that sticky fart sound making putty we all had and that mysteriously went missing one day
Gotta give props to the kid, not many kids his age could follow a script that well.
Yes, but let us not forget when Mr Sunday Movies ruined Batman in BvS by making the video of all the times Batman killed and shoving it into Zack's face
I used to watch this movie all the time as a kid. I once brought it into school cause my second grade teacher told us to bring in a movie and the class would vote on which one to watch. She pulled me aside a little later and said “I think this movie is just a little too dark for the rest of the class” and gave me back the tape. Watched it recently, and it’s still a great movie.
Imma say as a kid I was annoyed my Penguin action figure didn't look like he did in the movie.. I think kids are a bit more able to handle scary stuff then we give em credit for.
Danny Devito would be the kind of Thespian to put his balls on the line for a role. Would Daniel Day Lewis do that, hmm? Where's this man's Oscar!
You remember Robocop getting a bunch of toys and a kid's cartoon? You remember Robocop featuring a guy getting disassembled by a shotgun and another guy turning into paste when he's hit by a car?
I love Reese's Cups because I had one while I was watching this awful movie at 8 years old and my brain just blocks Batman Returns out and only remembers the peanut butter cup
I don't remember any of that backlash. I was nine years old at the time, and I was in love with that movie. I saw it like three times in theaters that summer. Luckily, my Uncle was the assistant manager of the theater at that time, and I could see movies for free.
"Cat woman took her claws and played tic tac toe on a man's face". That's the most hilarious description I've ever heard 😂
I like to imagine that Mason is present during these videos and just watching in silent horror as James just unloads a cascade of unwanted info on him
Even as a kid, I remember watching commercials and wondering why in the world Batman, Ninja Turtles, Terminator and such had these weird guns and lasers and jetpacks and whatnot.
But then...I was also a kid that watched Batman Returns and T2 without being emotionally or mentally scarred. So...yeah.
SIDE NOTE: Remember in these commercials when they would always have those cool walls of transparent blocks that they would shoot through or run the car through? Was anyone else extremely jealous of this?
I love your pronunciation of tortilla chips. 😂
Thankfully, I got some of the Batman toys from McDonald’s before it was pulled. I also got a couple of the Batman action figures, and the Catwoman action. I was 7 at the time but I must’ve had a huge crush on Catwoman. I insisted on wearing this sick T-shirt of catwoman and Batman fighting. But, alas, my parents would not let me see the movie. I was OK with settling for merchandise at the time now.
The glass mugs from McDonalds with 3d sculpted batman characters on them were legit.
that was for Batman Forever but yeah, they were legit
“The while film is an attack on children” lmao doesn’t this sound like it was written by an adult for him?
Hypothetically someone not me around 6 or 7 years old absolutely loved how Penguin emerged vomited black bile and collapsing. I thought I mean this person thought it was real cool.
You gotta love a good oh Mr. Sunday movies video essay about something no one really cares about until you realize you do because this guy is talking about it, I reckon
The footage was really interesting to see! Especially for someone who wasn't alive at that time :)
Batman Returns was no more violent or dark than the original Batman. People conveniently gloss over the Joker murdering Grissom, dozens of people in the museum, Alicia’s scarred face, Rotelli burning alive, the charred corpse, etc.
I love original Keaton Batman, but not keen on Returns (didn't like it much as a kid, either). I think if the sequels had leaned into the humour a bit more akin to Adam West Batman rather than just being camp and neon alone it might have worked for everyone. Might.
Imagine if Superman Lives happened, if the movie was also marketed towards kids, it would’ve gotten the same reaction to Batman returns.
I'm 40 and I remember watching this at the cinema with my parents and loving it
I still have the glass cups McDonald’s made to promote forever .
haha i thought it was going to be a guest presenter when the initial news reporter started talking
Man. I thought all those weird Batman toy variants with not-black armor looked so stupid, even as a kid.
I was 8 when this came out and I fucking loved it! It's still my favourite solo Batman movie 33 years later 🧡🦇🐈⬛️🐧🧡
There is NO WAY that "junior movie critic" came up with that shit on his own. He was handed a script and told what to say. I bet his other reviews were all written by an adult with his 10 year old name slapped on as a gimmick. "It was a total attack against kids." Kids don't talk like that.
More like Mr. Somedays Movies. I haven’t been able to poop and watch your videos on Sunday in like 25 years. Also, sexy young James.
Nice to see a classic style Mr. Sunday Movies video!
This Penguin was my favoruite version even as a kid. Yeah he was spooky but come on, kids deserve some soft horror too.And Tim Burton knew how to deliver it.
I heard that woman speak and instantpy got pissed.
THAT'S not James Mason!!!
Honey I shrunk the Batman? That would actually be really interesting.
i can’t believe WB would greenlight a Batman movie with dark themes… before 2005
Nice video. This one and Batman & Robin were always my fave as a kid. Catwoman scratching the "Hello There" sign in her apartment into "Hell Here" was a really cool part that always stuck with me
My parents let me watch Batman Returns when I was 9 on TV. They got quite a shock when they finally saw the movie 30 years later after Christmas dinner!
Man I always enjoy when James does a video where he researches a niche thing that he j enjoys and talks about that
Dude, our Batman Returns cups got used for years, I remember it very well, even my grandmother had a few hahaha!
Yeeeeeees. I’ve been waiting for another James editorial/video essay for ever. The big sandwich gods have delivered
Danny is the teacher's pet who grew up to be just another office worker that's endlessly in debt
I can't believe Mason was so scared by The Penguin!
Heh I saw this at 4 and am told I begged for it on VHS the next year for Christmas and I watched the crap out of that tape as a kid.
Similar to the Pokemon Porygon debacle in japan
In my home country Bolivia we had a similar problem after a kid (around 8 years old) jumped from a second floor claiming to his little brother he was a Pidgeotto (a flying creature)
The obviously died and there some push from the government and parents alike to ban the Pokemon anime from TV
My mother was forced to go into one of these meetings where she a claimed a derranged priest was screaming telling parents to not let kids watch ANY tv show, even the Flinstones
She left half walf through the meeting as she knew all of this was stupid
Pidgeotto is literally a bird pokemon. It would genuinely be no different then taking inspiration from a sparrow and jumping off a building. Makes no sense.
Did they ever find out whether he was a Pidgeotto?
Nutcase parents telling their kids what to say
I had so many toys from batman returns and absolutely loved that movie even though i was a bit scared of the penguin. I always thought the first batman movie was way scarier because of the Joker.
Look who remembered that he is Mr SUNDAY Movies today
“Played Tik Tac Toe on a man’s face” great line.
Batman was the least of it. Batman in the end was still a PG(13) rated movie. I was a kid during this era and i look back and am surprised at all the Aliens, Robocop, Terminator, and Predator toys that were sold.
Its been a while since we've had a solo James video and then I remember Maso is still a tram driver by day😅
i think ever kid in the world got at least a little freaked out when the Penguin just ate that dude's nose. such a good scene lol
