Is Rincon the Most SURF Friendly Wave in California?

  • Rincon is still the Queen even though her minions are growing.
    I headed to Rincon on Wednesday January 25th to catch a a fun head high swell. Every time I go I am amazed on how nearly perfect her waves break. The crowd definitely kills the "fun" mood though.
    Thanks for watching! I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll sea ya on the sand.

    Rincon sections alot more than it did in the 50's and 60's. The ocean floor around the point and inside has shifted and changed. When it got big back then, it rivaled Malibu for the 'perfect right'!

    I surfed Rincon in the mid 60s. Coming from south you could just pull a U on the highway and park right next to the rocks, climb down and paddle out. No leashes. I broke a board on the rocks. No huge crowds. No wetsuits. Those days are long gone.

    You captured the highs and lows of Rincon on this B minus surf quality day. The long rides there are definitely a treat, unlike most waves along the SC coast. That crowd scene is ridiculous, taking much of the fun out of surfing there. I remember a day there long ago. Sunny, warm, incredibly glassy waves averaging maybe 4', so definitely small by the expectations of most serious surfers. But the waves were as smooth as butter, and the water was so clear that I often could not see the trough--just transparent water through which I saw the rocky bottom rolling by underneath me. It was beautiful, but strange trying to orient myself on the face of a wave that clear. And as I recall, almost no one out that day. But as I said, that was long ago. There's a certain reef break north of there that was my favorite spot, and I had similar days there many times--glassy, shoulder-high or so, only three or four surfers in the water on a perfect day. I guess those days are in the past.

    @thomasryan5681 Год назад +1

    All the good spots are overcrowded even on mediocre days. Rincon (like Malibu) is insanely frustrating when it's on because you're either dropping in on someone, getting dropped in on or slalom coursing your way through everyone inside.

Definitely a very special spot that has marked my surfing journey at different times in my life. At 19 years old, (53) now my uncle Joe got me into being a commercial sea urchin diver. One time in December I really wanted to tackle Rincon on a Glassy Big Day. He said Nope, work first… But we left Oxnard Harbour and went straight to Rincon and my Uncle Joe let me surf as much as I wanted. It was great dropping anchor and surfing Rincon by boat. Well, Idk about “just as good”, Rincon is a damn good wave when it’s breaking, and absolutely insane when it’s “on”.
      But yeah, you won’t find me there, either. For the very same reason you stated. There’s 300+ people out on the epic days and 275 on the crap/blown out and barely breaking days. I can’t for the life of me understand what goes through people’s minds who regularly paddle out there. I mean, I obviously get the allure, it’s a goddamn great wave. But the odds of catching one of those great waves and also avoiding interference by Drop In Darrel or Adult Learner Larry, or both, is like 250/1. And those type of odds are only realistic if you commit to jockeying/buzzing around the lineup like a crackhead in full agro mode. It’s just not worth it to me, but to others it is- and that’s cool, whatever floats your buoy. I’ll be down the way at a still fun but lesser quality wave with less besties out.

      Yup- it takes a special, patient mind that’s able to handle and compartmentalize the non-stop drop ins and overall hectic quagmire that is Rincon, at any size or quality.
      I do not posses such a mind. I really wish I did though. Because I’d LOVE to be one of the 300+ people who willingly paddle out there when it’s firing and be all positive about it. Like having fun and whatnot. Instead, I’m walking down to the sand already picturing being a human buoy for 3hrs and/or getting dropped in on by adult learners and people who lack a clue all morning.
      I need to work on being more positive I guess.
