    130 stitches to the neck. Ripped vocal cords and hole in trachea. Dummy dropped in on me, I cut back to get away, he falls and his board hits my chin and a fin cut me open. 10 days in the hospital fed thru tubes

    Good that you caught the bodyboard leash-neck interaction. There's a reason why bodyguards fly free at The Wedge.

    Getting your leash stuck on a reef and drowning. Trick is to pull your leg up and remove it. Also people that do not use a leash in crowded lineups are pretty deadly. White board in whitewater landed straight in my mouth in Malibu pier while I was taking a breath 💀

    I will never forget May 15, 2021 when my buddy and I paddled out in front the power plant at HB State Beach. First real south swell to hit. It was very low tide, walled and dumpy. First wave I caught instantly turned into a big freefall airdrop. Me (my medial tibia), board which was imbedded in the lip of the wave all hit in the same moment an almost completely dry sandbar in a violent explosion. A split second later I bounced way up above the water to land in calf deep water with a burning stinging excruciating pain. I checked the board and all I found was a crack in the rail just behind the nose so I paddled back out. After successfully catching and riding a couple waves the pain kept getting worse so I lifted my leg up to see the swelling growing quickly. I got to the shore and could walk. Ranger happened by quickly thank God and drove me to my truck. HUGE contusion and I was on crutches the next 3 months and at that time didn’t even know if I would ever walk normally again. Thankfully I’ve mostly recovered now. I keep surfing but to this day I’m often times having trouble committing to dropping in when it gets a bit critical. It’s stuck in my head...

    lest us not forget about the slowest killer of them all - the SUN

      you are a smart dude. sometimes the most obvious thing is "hidden" in plain sight.
      Science tells us that a sunburn is associated with arthritis in later life, so who knows what repeated over exposure can do, long term for you health outlook ,, besides of course, skin cancer. on a smaller scale one can certainly feel pretty stupid when , as an adult, you get a painful sunburn , when one time should have been enough to teach you the lesson .

    I have a friend. That got Hepatitis from urban runoff surfing Malibu. I have 2 friends dying from skin cancer from surfing 30 years in Maui. So the Sun and Pollution are the number one Hazards. for me.

    Rip currents, just wax your board properly, use a lightweight longboard and paddle back on a slight angle facing the shore, it'll be slow but you'll inch your way back to shore no problem

  • @Myutoobname-e2m
    @Myutoobname-e2m 3 месяца назад +2

    For rip currents you forgot to mention to swim parallel to the shoreline rather than paddle against them / straight in. You’ll eventually paddle or swim out of it and then can swim in

    Took a wipeout in HI and the leash hogtied me by wrapping around both my ankles. I couldn't kick out of it as the wave was pulling the board and dragging me behind it.

    Sting rays are nasty! You don't even have to step on one. All you have to do is be near them & they start thrashing & get you.

    Fin to my skull, shots to the thin skin of your head are freaking painful! Removal of stitches from those stitches were also painful because the skin grew over my stitches and had to be dug out!! Bloody hell that hurt! After getting them pulled out I went surfing 😎🤙🏽

    Sting rays are the worst. You're walking or just jumped off a wave till suddenly you feel this slimy, rubbery thing under your foot spazz out causing your heart to jump out of your chest and you suddenly feel that infamous pinpoint sharp pain on your foot/leg.

      I was at Huntington Beach in Southern CA once, learning how to surf on a foam top. Waded into the water while shuffling. A small wave lifted me just a bit off the sand, and as I came back down I landed on a stingray, and it was exactly how you described. Kinda slimy, and absolutely freaking the f*** out. Thankfully I didn't get stung, and right as I felt the ray, I lifted my legs super high and pushed myself to a new spot. To my dismay, another stingray. Push myself again to another spot. ANOTHER STINGRAY?!?! In total I stepped on THREE stingrays without being stung. I was playing "the floor is lava" the entire time afterwards until I finished messing around in the water. Probably the scariest, and both the luckiest/unluckiest thing I've ever been through at a beach.

    As a bodyboarder the worst thing that can happen to me is loosing my fins. When you dive under a big wave and it breaks on your legs, sometimes one of them is removed by the impact. So you have to sit there in the impact zone, trying to put it back but when you do, you can't swim anymore so you go down. If you're out of breath and waves are still coming, it can quickly escalate.
