Some years ago an arborist brought me several saws. I've worked on saws for nigh 60 years. Most of these were junk, parts only. 1 saw, an 046, was so noisy I instinctively looked around for a catcher's mitt. Told him not to bring anymore saws.
Wow! Based on a missing ring, a partial missing ring, and a piston head that was chewed away, I would've expected that thing not to run at all. I'm surprised it didn't sound like someone had kicked a pie tin down a flight of stair based on all the damage, but it didn't.
That's crazy, I'm surprised it sounded as good as it did. Have you thought about getting a sheet of air filter foam for a/c units (that stuff is dirt cheap for a sheet at lowes) and making a pre filter for those cartridge air filters, to prolong the life of the element itself? it would certainly go a long way to help keeping them from getting packed and having to bang them out so much. The foam can be glued together overlapped at the seam with the spray upholstery glue, and probably stapled a few times with a stapler so it wouldn't come apart. I bought a sheet of that foam to experiment with it with automotive air filters myself. It's not as fine as actual air filter pre filter foam, but lightly oiled it should keep the big stuff out of the pleats at least.
I'm just going to slap a new filter on it. It would have lasted a lot longer if Mongo hadn't knocked the dirt out of it. The arts and crafts approach might take as long as the rebuild for me. LOL
@@richardflagg3084 Yeah, it was just a thought. 4 years ago I bought a sheet of air filter foam and made a pre filter for my daily driver. The filter element itself still looks like brand new and the foam is very dirty. I'll be experimenting with the sheet with round filters and see how it works out trying to join the ends together.
Wow you are an honest man. But if I was the customer there is no way I could have let you bear the cost of warranty after seeing the particulate that was in the intake. The would be completely on me. We would at the very least split the cost of repair. Good on you though. You would definitely be my go to tech if you were in my area.
It's been months since the Helicoil and new piston. I feel like the failure was more from the plating lifting. I must have gotten too aggressive cleaning the cylinder up. It happens.
@richardflagg3084 that's why I don't agree with porting or modification of a saw.. I prefer stock, I believe those german engineers have it just right from the factory and there's no need to modify, especially if you want long life and depending on it for work etc.
@@6900pilot I disagree. This failure was more on me removing transfer on the cylinder to aggressively. The saw ran for three years ported before the spark plug worked it's way out and they continued to run it causing some scoring. That's when I installed a helicoil and new piston 6-8 months ago. You're entitled to your opinion and that's fine. Nothing wrong with a stock saw. I've ported many saws that have been run hard, commercially, and not sacrificed reliability or longevity.
