I would add Elizabeth to the list of the self absorbed. Alex risked his life, Jimmy did all of the dangerous, awesome wall shooting and she just made an on the ground soap opera.
Alot of actors have charities, and foundations that help people, and improve the world. Maybe you shouldn't project so much negativity onto these people. They aren't the financial elite. They don't have billions of dollars, and factories across the world. They basicall get paid like a good pro athlete would.
To be fair, a lot of Hollywood are not self absorbed hypocrites. Being both a climber and someone that once worked in the entertainment industry, a lot of "those people" are very down to earth, good humans. Media are the one's hyping shit up a lot of the time.
Alex was barely acknowledged in the acceptance speech. He achieved something remarkable that no human has done before. The film would not have happened without him. He should have gotten more than a nod in the speech.
@@anthonyx3576 I don't know man, in the acceptance she said the film would have been boring had it not been for Alex's GF. What an insult to his accomplishment.

As much as the movie is about him and his incredible feat, it was also about his journey which started some 8 years back. Which made the audience more glued to the doc. The feat, itself is monumental, No one's taking that away from him, but to capture what person he was, what went through to achieve that and document it such craft is what filmography is about. This was a movie about a climber not about a climb, the climb is the pinnacle of the movie but not the point of it, let's face it the reason why this movie was indicted to the Oscar's is because it's a documentary on Alex life and relationships first and because it does have an amazing fit of athleticism as the high point, if they had made a 1 hour climb footage the movie would have made 12 bucks, and a couple climbing aficionados would be elated, but the general public most likely would be bored as fuck. Great movie, it did deserved the win, and it will introduce way more people to climbing than any technical movie would ever be able to.
It's absolutely propelled by the grandeur of his achievement and what it required. Had it been about climbing Everest, it wouldn't have been nominated even. The documentaries about Reinhold Messner would all be nominated if it was about giving insight into the life of climbers. They gave more screentime to his girlfriend than the actual achievement, which is just sad.
@@lucifer2133 And that's why it was nominated and won , I like climbing, I can watch 2 hours of Alex climbing, I don't know a single other person in my life that could say the same, the movie won the Oscar because people went to watch it, the climb is what attracted people because it seems like insanity, but very few people can sit trough 2 hours of non stop climbing, and it would be a pretty shitty documentary for everyone but climbers, that's the point, 10 minutes of climbing is more than enough to leave a good impression of the feat, without completely alienating everyone that is not a climber.
Exactly! I'm amazed at the amount of people missing this point. No one outside of the climbing community is going to watch this if it's just raw footage of the climb.
