Check screen on oil reservoir I believe it's on one of the lines not 100 percent sure it's been a while since I had a 400. Also fire it up with the filter cover and filter of to see if it's pumping oil. If not could be a bad oil pump or oil pump gear. Maybe take the hose of the valve cover that's going to the reservoir and pour a little oil down it into the valve cover to see if that helps the noise just to help diagnose and know for sure that no oil is making it up there. Some oil should get slung up top by your timing chain regardless but still worth a shot. Good luck.
I have an old one very low hour 400EX it's like brand new but I had a problem because I had the oil filter in wrong it was the wrong oil filter so I started getting shavings but I did pull the cooler lines off blue I'm out with the air compressor started mine up blowing oil hard so I knew it had oil pressure
Very simple motors to work on. My XR400R has a banjo bolt that feeds the oil into engine. Might be turned to far closing it up. Also sometimes people use silicone on gasket surface and it could clog oil passages.
If it’s ever been took apart it seems like every one I’ve worked on it had silicone on places it shouldn’t of had it and where it supposed to have it , it had way to much and it gets trapped in the pick up screen in the motor that’s located in the bottom of the right side sitting on it and you have to take the side cover off to get to it but once the side cover is off you can see it easy and this is a good time to check clutch’s,timing chain and adjusters to while your in there. I worked on two last year that had the screen full of silicone and until you take the side cover off you won’t know unless you see silicone smushed out around the cam cover then you know how much ever is on the outside there is probably as much on the inside and I’ve got some out of the oil pump to and blow air through the oil line that seeds the oil to the top end to be sure of no blockage at all. Hope this helps ✌🏼
There might be an oil rotor that’s loaded with dirt in the bottom end or the top end oil passages might be clogged. I know these for sure on 350x could cause oil starvation and a 400ex might be the same. Hope this helps.
Hey Chris, Sound like the engine needs to come off to see that.... I may have a deal on another 400EX engine, then, I can pull this one, get it on the bench and see what its issue is.... Thanks for the info, advice, watching, and commenting!!!
If its had too light of oil in it and or ever been run low causing it ti get hot, its likely a simple fix. Completely drain oil, change it with a new filter too, and do a quick valve adjustment. Could be some loose header pipes that need tightened up too making a bit more noise than normal. Theres also a long list of other possibilities like that listed already but id start there and then move towards all the other possibilities in the oil system. And valves out of tolerance make it sound like theres no oil when theres just extra clatter and loss of power
Now that I see the end of the video I have seen one or two videos of 400 low oil pressure but typically they're not the only way you can make that top-end sloppy or maybe have Camp slop is to have the oil filter in wrong when I got mine I put the oil filter in wrong when I first changed it and I got quite a bit of shavings in the oil from shifting hard so I figured out the oil filter was backwards and not and it wasn't even the right filter so got the right filter put it back on and in the oil never had any shaving it again but my motor still sounds new you could run that thing without an oil filter and it would be fine unless you were beating the hell out of it so starving for oil is very rare especially looking at it very low mile bike if you're interested at all and selling Harvey I'd be interested in buying I'm in southeast Michigan I know this is an old video but I'm subscribed to you that's why I came across. Let me know Brian Underhill 32 Gmail I'd like to come and get that that's a nice bike even if I got to pull the motor apart thanks I have a RUclips channel as well hondabond 35
There is a 3 piece oring on the oil pump it goes between the case and the pump and when they go out it lets certain places like the top end starve oil mine did I have to buy a cam now and a head the previous owner just kept running it until he heard a motor noise and took it apart
Hey Chris, The Quad maybe getting a new engine, that will give me time to figure out what is wrong with this one! I need to do some research.... Thanks for Ur thoughts, advice, suggestions, watching, and commenting!!!
My 400 ex is like a wood stove smokes way to much. I'm hoping that they sent me a worped head or rings. Does this sound right. If the cylinder is kinda shaped like an egg
Is there any way you could help me get just a bare block running I think it’s a 200 but I don’t have any wiring. I do have a Chinese cdi and coil. Willing to pay for help I unlocked the block
Mine did the same thing. I took off the oil lines from engine an got a blow gun an stuck the rubber tip on the oil inlet hole on side of the case . An then did the other hole. A slug of sludge come out . It fixed it . But it was to late top end was wore out so it smoked . But it fixed my oil problem
Hey Tyler, I have a pile of 250X parts that need to get near each other and then I can do some engine videos.... I hate splitting cases and I avoid it whenever possible, frequently, the cases will not go back together if all the various shafts are not aligned and seated perfectly.... I really hate it when someone was in before me to mess things up, frequently, they loose shims, drop them in the case, or put them back in the wrong place.... Stay tuned... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!
You got to figure out if it is starving for oil just because it makes noise doesn't mean it's not getting oil I have the exact same motor and I had it for years if they get noisy up top the heat causes that a lot of the time usually you can readjust the rocker arms sometimes it gets sloppy those are over heater engines your home for it I have a temperature gauge in my dipstick but it might just be overheated so bad that the Rockers gave some away maybe you can readjust them and it'll be fine because those are actually really good routers I got mine and I beat the hell out of mine all the time she's got oil and she does not make any noise and if it did that would pull rocker covers off and see they take exactly two quarts olive oil I recommend 2050 that's what I use and my motor sounds like new still you probably just got a overheated to death motor and the Rockers giveaway so they're just jumping around in there otherwise check for oil pressure take an oil line off bottom one off the engine start it up four maybe five seconds if it sprays out oil real good then that just says it right there it's got a little pressure cuz that's where it comes out right there oil pump runs and comes out that line
Hey buddy ,,, if it not getting oil in the top end there is a passage in the block or the head cloded, or in the bottom end ,, also check to see if the line going from oil tank in front isnt cloded and tank is clear also call me pls
Hey Racing Tech, We need to talk before I travel up Ur way.... First, I need to get the Sunl running again, it has been sitting for the last 4 months, second, I want U to be sure that it is what U and Ur son want.... It is a very long trip for anyone to misunderstand or be disappointed by the trade, and lastly, my schedule is not so free that I can just leave my responsibilities at the drop of a hat to travel 6+ hours on an ATV deal without rescheduling some stuff.... Stay tuned, sorry to temporarily disappoint Ur son!!! Thanks for your input on the 400ex, the ATV deal, watching, and commenting!!!
Thanks buddy for response means alot ,i under stand you got alot to do,,i am willing to trade my three for the sunL or the red one i think he will prefer the red one and its no problem about the bearings and seal i can fix it with him as long you bring the bearing and seal and i would take the blue one seater and whatever parts you have for both you are giving me i dont mind fixing them myself, up to you but like i said just give all the parts i need to make it run i will fix it thanks buddy ,,,,hope my info on your honda project helped god bless buddy let me know as soon as possible thanks a million
Either the sunL or the red one dont matter and the blue one seater with what parts you may have for them we will be happy not a problem either way i want him to learn thanks again
i have one for you that type of oil filter if used if your bike is running rich it will make that filter useless it completely clogs and will starve your top end of oil this i do know and that sounds like you're symptoms
I rebuild mine from bottom to top all do e and runs great some of these people don't know what they're doing if ur not mechanic the. Don't buy a quad if you're to stupid don't buy a atv or motorcycle end of discuss
Im going to be following this as I am having similar issues with my 350x
Check screen on oil reservoir I believe it's on one of the lines not 100 percent sure it's been a while since I had a 400. Turning it over without the filter cover in place is where i would go too....

i was thinking silicone to i had a trx250x that hapind to killed the rockers and cam
Ikr why the hell use silicone when they have a gasket kit I mean come on

No guys it’s only a old broken decompression release making the noise. Buy a aftermarket cam and adjust valves problem solved.

prob ur timing chain adjuster there know to go bad on the ex and that with make it tick and run hot if the chain is really loose
There is a 3 piece oring on the oil pump it goes between the case and the pump and when they go out it lets certain places like the top end starve oil mine did I have to buy a cam now and a head the previous owner just kept running it until he heard a motor noise and took it apart
Is there a way of testing oil pressure , check check valve for maintaining oil pressure . Do a oil change with a new filter , maybe bad filter .

If you need to know anything about that trx400ex let me know I've been working on the 300-400 for years hondabond 35
Have you ever rebuilt the top end with niche brand parts more specifically the cylinder
My 400ex pushing oil out of the crank case ventalation hose and it’s basically a brand new motor can’t figure it out
@@Th-Lgened you've got the return hole covered up on the case
What cam? Is the plunger and spring hole plugged? For the cam decompression I mean.
Is there any way you could help me get just a bare block running I think it’s a 200 but I don’t have any wiring. I do have a Chinese cdi and coil. Willing to pay for help I unlocked the block

Hey Harvey can you split the case on a 1987 trx250x and show how to instal the kickstart shaft ?

250x are a nightmare to work on

Do you have a 200cc water-cooled rig? And if you have a video with him! Please!
they were common to wear out the camshaft and rocker arms due to the kids who wheelie for hours and hours and hours
Harvey I'm sure that 400ex has a pre oil pump screen I've had that clog on my lakotas before and eat one head and cam quickly
Hey buddy ,,, if it not getting oil in the top end there is a passage in the block or the head cloded, or in the bottom end ,, also check to see if the line going from oil tank in front isnt cloded and tank is clear also call me pls
Also my son is asking me about the sun L he likes that one will give you all three for it justbto make him happy please wanna make my kids day

did u ever figure it out bud, having the same issue on a new rebuilt ex
The valves adjusted properly? Or stretched timing chain
Have you really had that bike that long. God I've been here a while. Shame about its clogged arteries
Oil pump and change oil filter while your at it!!!
Only thing I can think of is oil pump
I rebuild mine from bottom to top all do e and runs great some of these people don't know what they're doing if ur not mechanic the. Don't buy a quad if you're to stupid don't buy a atv or motorcycle end of discuss
Oil strainer in the oil tank clogged
