  • Hello and welcome to Part 3 of my build guide for the awesome Tamiya Super Clod Buster. Today we get the bodywork finished! This part covers the completion of all steps in the extra instruction guide for the Gray Edition Super Clodbuster, and yes, as it's the special edition I will be following the box-art exactly!
So I flat the hard ABS body with fine grade wet-and-dry paper and spray on 3 coats of Tamiya Gunship Grey (TS-48). The other plastic parts get a coating of matte black. I then take you through the paint detailing and the fitting of the decals or stickers and attaching all the accessories.
I hope you find this guide useful and if you have any questions please feel free to ask in the comments section.
A massive shout-out to the ever-generous RC Elf for gifting this incredible RC Monster Truck!
    About The Super Clod Buster:
This monster truck features a body that was inspired by classic pick-up trucks from the 1980's, giving it a realistic appearance.

    Features:
    1/10 scale R/C assembly kit.
The Super Clod Buster body has been reproduced in injection-molded plastic.
Highly-durable bathtub type monocoque chassis frame.
Front/rear trailing arm suspension with 8 coil spring dampers.
Front/rear sealed gearboxes are equipped with differential gears.
Kit includes ESC. (Original kit included a mechanical speed controller)
    Two 540 motors included.
    Sticker sheet included.
Requires: Radio Control System, High Torque Steering Servo, Battery Pack, Suitable Charger, Paint and Tools for Assembly.

Great job Mark. I really like that they put two part trees into the kit. Gives a lot of room for customization. Painting the indicators was short but satisfying to watch.

Hi Mark, well that was an exceptional job ( though I expected nothing less. ) A beautiful looking shell and RC, and a wise move to get a basher shell. Impressive too that you bothered to paint in the windscreen rubber, many folk don't bother with that, but if you want perfection... !! I've done that job many times for myself or other blokes at the truck club, but they usually want them in chrome - I never thought to use masking...😣...Doh !! Your right too about putting the stickers over the recesses, they become a dust magnet and eventually screw up the sticker. As I said a beautiful looking RC. When you run it though, hopefully we'll see both shells in action, as it would be a shame not to see this one. Well done dude. Top job...🤩👍🏻.

Hello my good friend! Glad you got faith in me, I tell ya though, I was bricking it before starting the paint as I really didn't want to mess it up! Being a gift and a special edition and all that...
Yeah, I just had to go EXACTLY box art for a change, so black windscreen rubber it was! Masking them just saves a load of faffing with the brush! And good to know it's not just me with the application of the stickers into recesses! Many thanks for the encouraging words, it really means a lot to me and helps spur me on in the same direction. I'm gonna look after this shell, but it will be run carefully at some point. Thanks again, dude! 🙏😊👍

Great job, Mark! Uhh yeah, always the tricky part, putting the stickers on so no dirt will get in. I’m always struggling with the edges in certain places. They just come off no matter how much I rub them down, and then dirt gets in and then game over. Too difficult to explain in English though. Anyhow, beautiful Clod. It looks fantastic! They really nailed it with the color combo on this one! When I put the clod buster stickers on the side I ran them right over the cab/bed gap and once it was down I went back in and cut the sticker with a hobby knife in the center of the grove and stuck it down to both sides. The only reason is I didn't know if it would look scrunched up by stuffing it in the gap. Your looks fine so I probably could have done the same! You are going to love running it! It is not a speed demon but it drives and bumbles around just like the monster trucks of the 80s!!

That looks great! I started a Clod Buster Black Edition in 2021 and life got in the way so I'm just back at it now in March 2024. I had to fix the crosses in the hood as well - they were deep and so I used some filler since the final color will be high gloss black. There was also a significant mold line from the driver side hood panel line along the windshield and above the drip edge.

Now that's how to do a Tamiya body shell mate..... Oooh I do love a hard body! 😉
    Wonderful job there Mark! 🙏👌
It's clearly obvious that you have much experience in this process, and comes across very professional.
As someone who has done many hard shells I can highly commend the way you went about this.... from the spraying preparation /technique, the use of props to hold smaller parts as you painted them, the cutting of the decals(including the removing a small corner of the backing in order to endure correct alignment) ensuring flush Decal contact in the crevices (and yes, dirt does get behind and lift them if not done correct) right the way through to the masking/painting the small detail.
You have a much steadier hand than me mate, I have to use paint pens for the window frames!
What a cracking job, you really done this iconic truck justice bud!
Shame on Tamiya regarding those production inperfections in the body, most unlike them. I've never seen that before on any other models other than the grey edition clod?
This shell MUST be kept as a display body..... especially as this rig is renowned for wheelies and tumbles.
Plenty of basher shells come up on ebay for when you unleash the beast with on the hob Rob! 🤣
Looking forward to seeing her in action mate! 😊 👍 👍 👍 👍

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Год назад +1

Hi James and thanks so much for the encouraging comment. Not done too many hard bodies, about 4 now I think, definitely a different challenge compared to Lexan bodies, more difficult overall, I think...
I do try to appear professional, but it really isn't the case, I'm just good at editing! 🤣
As you know, much of the processes are just common sense and the use of logic. Trial and error often comes into play, too! As I get older my hands do shake more so I have to hold my breath! It helps a little! And, no, I've never seen a Tamiya body with so many imperfections before, very strange and very annoying! I will run this body for the camera at least once, but fear not, It will be cherished and a basher replacement found for everyday running. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments, take care, mate! 🙏😉👍

Hiya Mark. That was really great and a brilliant result. I'm very impressed at you doing the painting and stickering on camera. Did you protect the camera lens in any way from the paint floating about in the air. I can't believe that some people span that gap with the sticker! I guess you could do that and then run a knife down the centre and press the ends into the space but there would be a little gap. This is definitely one that you don't want to be turning over too much. That basher shell will come in handy. Top work on the truck and the vid. Best wishes mate 🙂

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Год назад +1

Hiya Pete. Glad you like it, as you know I was worried about the outcome but thankfully things went mostly to plan! Yeah, painting and stickering on camera is twice as tricky as doing it without filming. But no, I didn't protect the lens, the camera was quite far away and zoomed in so all was good. I think the way you suggest to apply that sticker is the best, I did think about that but went my usual more difficult way! Yeah I think I'll just gently trundle around with this body on for the camera and use a basher shell most of the time. Thanks for the cool comments, best to you too, mate! 🙏😉👍

I looked at painting the headlight buckets and said to me self, "nope!". The matte finish is just like a battleship, so with that, flat seems right and it DOES look GOOD!!!! Out Fu@king Standing Mate!!!!! I'm a bit jelly over this..... Your window moldings (rubber seals) look spot on, the front marker lenses look spot on.... WOW!!!! At a loss for words dude. ATB my friend!!!!!!

Hi there my friend, and thanks so much for the awesome comments, I gotta say that I'm flattered! I don't think it's that good, but at least this old man is happy with his work and his very special Clod! I've got my fingers crossed that yours comes out as well as you hope, I'm sure you can do it my brother! Thanks again for all the help and advice, I couldn't have done it without you, mate. Cheers!

@@MarkBryanRC Mark, thanks so much for the comment back (swelled head). I hope mine comes out good too. Did you wash the body after scuffing it up (can't remember if you said in the video), I would think so. Seen Rob's video too, I did not comment on the part where he said "reach a finger around before screwing" I thought I should leave it alone, LMAO!!!! Brother, I can't wait to hear what you think about after driving it (it's 80's tech modeled after very early Monster Truck tech), the design is @ 35 years old. Yada Yada Yada.... I talk too much. ATB my friend and our best to one & all!!!!!!

@@UncleBobsRC Hi Bob! Yep, I actually rubbed the body down with wet abrasive using lots of soap and water. The paint stuck like glue, no problems! Haha, you got a dirty mind, bro - not like me!!! It may be a wile before I get that first run in, the weather is so crappy! ATB, mate!

@@MarkBryanRC Good to know about the paint. I guess it's time for me to get cracking on my body (as you know, I have those 400 to 3000 grit Tamiya sanding/polishing sponges). We got hit with 3 or 4 inches of snow last night and today its going to be around 40 degrees (@ 5.2 C) outside. You heard what Rob said didn't you? I laughed so hard my gut hurts.... I think a speed test is in order for mine, when I get it done.

Great work Mark. Is the panel line on the front wing part of the design. Is it meant to be a how the front opens.

Many thanks, Simon! Ahh, the vertical panel line on the front wing? Not sure about that dude as there are lines on the top of the wings where a bonnet would normally open - now you got me wondering!!!!

You sure did a really nice job on painting and detailing the body! Did you primer the body before painting? I didn’t see that part. Also do you spray a clear coat on your stuff when done?

Thanks, Brian! No I didn't use primer, the instructions don't call for it and they are correct, the top coat goes on nicely straight on the plastic. Also, I didn't use a clear coat as I like the look as it is. However, I have used a gloss clear coat on other hard bodies to good effect. All the best! :O)

@@MarkBryanRC ok thanks for the heads up as I’m planning on how I want to do mine, I have the same kit. Although I do like the lighter grey better the way it comes, but paint is better for sure. I’ve always used Tamiya primers under Tamiya paints , because I thought that was the way to do it. Thanks for the nice video

Hi and thanks for the reply! I agree about the lighter colour but the matte paint does look nice! Best of luck with your bodywork! Cheers! :)
