LOL... I have never thought for a MINUTE that cruise crew barely work! I routinely see crew members working ALL DAY LONG. Some of the hardest working people I have ever met! Hands down.

Your answer about "everyone would go if it's as great as people say" is totally dead on! I applied straight out of school and then cancelled my interview because I wasn't ready to leave home (even though I was dead sure I'd be so happy to leave).

Since I have worked on and off for cruise ships the last 15 years before the pandemic. I agree with you pretty much on everything you said. Unless you are an officer you will probably have to get your job thru an agency of the country you live in. The agencies will take a percentage of your pay. The cruise ships hire almost every body this way. Sometimes you get a job thru a sub contractor like steiner for spas they have few others for shops casinos ect.

Having worked on a cruise line for 15 years, I agree with everything you say. People generalize about everything and its just ridiculous what some people think and say. Some of them are laughable. I loved the one drink limit. We call it the one drink minimum!

I got paid really well to drink coffee and look out the window.
Then I got promoted and now I just drink coffee and tell someone else to look out the window

It is very hard work. You are away from family and friends for long periods. You work crazy hours and are, essentially, on call 24/7 and your hours have to be completely flexible. As hard as you work in the retail environment the housekeeping staff and food staff hours are crazy. Even when I worked retail many years ago I don't think I would have been willing to work on a cruise ship.

    • @burningblue1254

Housekeeping can be very tough at times depending on the guests. Some leave their cabins impeccable and some are absolute pigs. You are right about the food and beverage, they are non stop.

@sasha is not alone anymore, I am a ship’s captain (of an super tanker rather than cruise liner ) so can help answer some of your questions.
A ship’s Captain is in charge of the ship and is also a member of the Deck / Navigation dept. To be a ship’s captain (of any ship over 3000 tons) you have to be qualified as a Master Mariner, this takes about 10 years with a combination of time at maritime collages and also time at sea at different ranks. You will start of as a Cadet ( trainee officer, likely to be sharing a cabin), then Third Officer, Second Officer, First Officer, ( Safety Officer ) Chief Officer ( Staff Captain ) and Captain. The ones in brackets are additional ranks that you get on cruise ships, rather than on other ships, but each shipping company have their own job titles! The ranks above First Officer will require you to hold a Master Mariners Certificate and you will need spend time in each rank in order to be promoted. So on a cruise ship it could take you 15 -20 years to go from Cadet to Captain!
As a captain you normally will get the best crew cabin on board, which will be located close to the ship’s bridge with the other Deck and senior officers cabins. You will have a ‘Day Cabin’ which is a combination of office and lounge with a separate sleeping cabin and en-suite too. As a Captain there is a lot of paperwork that you are responsible for, though on a cruise ship am sure there is a crew purser who helps out with the admin...I don’t have that on my ship and have to do it myself!
If you are interested then most shipping lines run cadet schemes so have a look! It’s a great life, I have been doing it for 20 years, I spend 3 months at sea and then 3 months on leave at home so have a great work life balance!
Thank you @cruising as crew, great Vid and insight to working on a cruise ship!

@@davidlockwood9192 Pretty much. Retired Ferry Cruise Ferry Capt. Even as a Captain you still have a boss. You still have stuff to do. It’s pretty easy, I never worked hard. (I quit tankers before I was XO that guy works hard)
Best job is 2nd Officer. If I was ever to go back to work it would be as a 2nd Officer.

    • @johnmacdonald1878

How much do I sleep. Depends on the schedule. Where we are, I am on call 24 7. I have to be around for All Arrivals, Departures, critical parts of voyages, respond to any unusual events, emergencies. Ect.
I also have a ton of administrative or paper work and other stuff which is not a lot of fun.
My Cabin is pretty big but it’s also an office where I do a lot of the ships business.
My private cabin is not really any bigger than other officer cabins. Sometimes I get a bigger TV on some ships I might get a bath but a shower is more convenient.
No roommate, but on some ships my wife can sail with me.
      Cadets probably have a roommate.
I went through a Cadet program with a big oil company about 45 years ago and went to South Shields Marine and Technical Collage, Glasgow Collage of Nautical Studies both of which still exist and have both deck and engineering cadet programs.
How much do I make. I prefer not to say.
Ship’s vary, Cruise Ships May pay senior officers very well.
Depends upon size of vessel, location, experience 80ish to about 150ish G$ per year. In some cases maybe more.
Chief engineer is generally about the same.
Hotel Manager it was a bit less but not a lot less. Hotel Makes money.
      I just drive.
Coast Pilot, about 2x or even more
      I started at 17 Was a 3rd Office at 21,
      2nd Offier 26/ XO at 27
Worked several different companies and types of ship
Ending up on Ro Pax Ferries,
started relieving as Master or Capt at 30 full time mid 30s.
Many of my Friends worked at some point on Cruise Ships.
I never did, when I was young I was paid better and was always the officer in charge of my watch. I only answered to Capt. My sea-time counted more so I progressed faster.
I worked on a Big European Company Cruise Ferry. To spend more time at home.
Even that was to long away so I quit and worked a smaller ro pax ferry near where I live. So I could stay home.
After my kids got older I went back to Cruise Type live aboard Ferries until I retired. I still wanted to spend time at home.
Cruise Ship Officer or Captain is a good well paid job.
Most people I know who worked as a Cruise Ship Officer enjoyed it until they found they wanted to stay home.
The life of a junior officer is better because you are young and free. Less responsibly and more opertunity to go ashore and have fun
As you move up the food chain you get much more responsibly and less freedom. Particularly freedom to go ashore and have fun.
As a Captain you are never off duty unless you hand over to the next Captain leave the ship and go home.
You don’t often get to do the parts of the job you enjoyed the most.n
You spend most of your time ensuring other people are doing those things properly for you.
Lastly when something goes wrong you get called. You have to be ready and you have nobody to call.
People who think they are important will call you. Try and tell you what they want you to do. But they will not take responsibility for what happens, that’s on you.
You have the ultimate authority to make decisions and with it comes the responsibility for the safety of the ship, passengers, crew, people on other vessels or ports you interact with and the environment.
It’s actually quite easy. And quite enjoyable, but not as good as 2nd Officer.
On a Cruise Ship you also have to be a good diplomat and good at public relations. And a whole lot of other crap The 2nd Officer doesn’t have to worry about.

I am surprised about pay rates for different countries. I would have thought that everyone would have been paid the same depending on the job they are doing, in the currency of the ship
