If you look at the RAM 1500 configurator on the official RAM ordering site then you can see that upgrading from the V6 to the 5.7L V8 HEMI is less than $3,000 (I know it’s 5.7 not 6.4 but it’s a V8). Considering that the 6.4 can’t be more than maybe $4,000 more than the V6 pentastar. And they still make money on it. The $30,000 is a total ripoff from the factory. Their profit margin is probably $25,000 on the engine upgrade alone! Plus another $30,000 probably on the rest of the Jeep. Pretty healthy profit margins right there.

Really wish you guys would talk about the T case on the 392. It's 2.72:1 vs the 4:1 on the v6/4cyturbo (4xe also the 2.72:1) that makes a huge difference off road when crawling. in addition, it's a clutch pack and they're breaking down at 30k miles. Jeep didn't really build the 392 to off road (the clutch pack and t-case..which is there because they didn't want to spend the money to install dana 60 axles on which is necessary to run 2HI with 470HP) and look at that exhaust and shock tower mounts! The whole thing was a way to grab cash to sell more compass crap.

As awesome as these are here's my problem. The powertrains. The 392 is crazy expensive and more than likely will never get used like this. The turbo 4 & Pentastar are OK but when you get 35's on them, you'll be wanting more power. Not everyone will want the 4xe and these get spendy too. BTW this was great vid and I wish you'd do more runs on this trail.

Plenty of power, and great MPG for a Jeep with a 3.5" lift and 37s. I had the opportunity to run up the Ike a few times with it and it was by far the best vehicle I have driven up both sides of it with. I think the 392 can’t tow as much is because of two things - cooling capacity and AWD transfer case. Part of the tow rating test is for the engine to stay cool up a 11.4 mile 5% grade on a 100 deg day. If the engine can’t cool enough, rating is reduced. Same reason a diesel Gladiator had a lower tow rating than the V6.

Colorado is easy, either are fine. 4 door with 35s is equivalent to what I can do with a 2 door with 33s. However, my Jeep Liberty on 29s could still do most of Colorado’s trails including red cone. It’d just be a little harder, but it’s really easy in a wrangler.

37 inch tires would give a similar advantage without adding the complexity and failure points of an air suspension. I'm a fan of bigger tires and less lift should equal clearance with stability. I've driven multiple Wranglers with the 4cyl turbocharged motor and in my opinion it's the best engine option for performance/value. The only downside is it can't be had with a manual transmission.

I definitely love it! They have like 10 different channels, I’m pretty sure the others don’t cover a lot of Jeep stuff. This is the off-road channel, right?

The 392 can't tow extra because the axles are already at their limits with the power it puts out, much less the extra load of a trailer.

    Which Jeep rides better?

Very interesting, but am surprised a dinosaur solid axle has better articulation than an independent suspension. Any particular reason why this is true?

    • @JollyGiant19

TL; DR IFS is limited by pivot throw length in a way axels are not.
IFS is simply limited in articulation due to throw length of the pivot point. You can make it longer to compensate for this (see RCLT HD) but then it starts cutting into the advantage of IFS in the first place: on road handling.
A solid axel has much great throw length due to the length and since it’s solid, you can do giant (4+ inches defined here) lifts that IFS just can’t do without expensive and extensive modifications. It’s often cheaper and easier to convert an IFS vehicle to a front solid axel instead of doing those modifications.

IFS was never put on 4x4s for off-road performance, it was to make them better ON road. One of the reasons the solid axle works so well is that as one wheel is pushed up, the opposite wheel is pushed down. Some IFS systems work better than others, from watching a lot of these videos. It looks like the Bronco IFS flex is more than say a Toyota IFS, but neither will ever come close to the articulation of a solid axle. Once you start modding them, the differences become even greater. I'll just add to this that purpose built off-road vehicles and UTV type. Things are an exception to this, since they do not need to have any compromises made for on-road performance. An IFS system on something like a Baja truck has basically nothing in common with the IFS on the front of say a Tacoma.

Also, you guys need a better sponsor, OnX red cone info is just from the excellent funtreks books. The books are way better as they’re updated. Also, TrailsOffroad is a much better trail finding source and they’re local to us, you know Colorado (however they cover the nation and are rapidly expanding coverage). I just can’t stand how OnX rips off of funtreks and presents it as their own. Tommy, you’re wheeler, talk some sense into your crew.
