One of my favorite Historic fiction of all time.
I adore the count. I love how he doesn't allow himself to change in the wrong ways. Change, yes, but not what is important, not on ways that make him ornery or cynical. His openness & gentleness toward humankind in spite of his marginalization was so refreshing and lovely!

I read this last November and it became one of my favourite books of all time. So glad you loved it too. Found families, beautiful friendships and gorgeous cultural references are my cat nip. I didn't expect to find it so wholesome and moving

And here I am, the most emotional reader I know.😂 This book had me tearing up several times, and I legit WEPT from joy at the end. I love the way it looked at history and tradition and how much those things inform who we are, and thusly hold so much weight and importance. It’s so much about human strength and human ingenuity and human interaction. I’ve only read it once, but every single scene and quote you reference, I remembered. That’s highly unusual for me on a first reading. This book is special in a way that not many modern books are. It deserves to be a classic.

The end is perfection! Towles nailed everything with this book. You may be on to something - I won't be surprised if this is considered a modern classic in the future.

I love this book too, it's so funny and poignant. Amor Towles is a decent writer! I read the Lincoln Highway which I didn't enjoy as much but it was still an engaging read and hey there are some significant bromances in there too. I would read whatever he writes in future.

I love this book! Easily among my favorite I've read in the past few years, and I agree this is one you could recommend to just about anyone. So glad you enjoyed it. I read The Lincoln Highway earlier this year, and although it didn't reach the level of Gentleman in Moscow for me, I still really appreciated it. Haven't read Rules of Civility yet.

@@alanaestelle2076 David Foster Wallace was an absolute genius! I had never up to this point encountered a mind quite like his. He changed the modern literature world for me. He wasn't the only one, but he packed one of the most powerful, poetic, elegant punches.. 💔 And if we celebrate writers of American literature I just have to say that William Faulkner has made sweet sweet literary love to my brain. Rough too. Hair pulling and everything. He's on the level of Dostoyevsky, Shakespeare, Dickens, Kafka. ❤

Yes, totally agree that people on opposite riverbanks likely have more in common than they do with inland neighbors, regardless of to whom they pay taxes. Similarly with readers who also like War and Peace or Madame Bovary, like I do. However, the unrestricted free flow in thoughts and ideas remains impractical. In fact, at times it's even difficult to talk to people living abroad, though tbh there are more people speaking English than there ever were!

Social media helps a lot as well with connecting to those abroad as well. I talk to my British friends all the time haha
