think he wrote a great book called the lincoln highway which many people love critics say one of the best things about his writing is every new book is different than the last but all equally good ⚛😀

I agree about thinking Towles will become a classic over time. I really really need to get his 3rd one read.

Making my way through Rules currently. It continues to interest and draw me in. It's my first Towles novel. It seems I should've started with A Gentlemen.. despite, Towles, no doubt, is an excellent wordsmith. Do you mind sharing what about this book kept it from being a 5/5 read for you?

I can't put my finger on why exactly. it was perhaps missing that little extra "oomph" that Gentleman in Moscow has.

I preferred A Gentleman in Moscow, but Rules of Civility is certainly good. I'm interested to seeing your views on The Lincoln Highway which is a different type of book again. I will pick up whatever Towles writes next.

'hew'? Yeah, that looks like a typo to me too - I have never seen that word used in that way. Sorry - I am a physics nerd. I am glad you found the book enjoyable even with all the philosiphizing - I just finished a novel that had no real plot, but a lot of discussion and political arguing and it was very very wooden and stiff..!! Thank you for the video.

I like some philosophizing in books - Towles doesn’t make it obnoxious haha it’s got to strike a balance and can’t be too preachy lol

With respect to rules: I finished recently Does God Exist? and perhaps it inspired in me the following weird thought(s). When we talk about the laws of physics what we're really talking about is the laws limiting God, bc for ordinary people like us things like gravity and inertia are pretty much theoretical. The desire to discover these laws is a reaction to the heavy-handed imposition of the Commandments. It's like oh yeah, well what about You, what laws govern Your conduct? (And if you're that type of person, the fact that there are laws like momentum and relativity of time doesn't necessarily imply the impossibility of miracles).

One of my many thoughts while/after reading Samuel Butler's _The Way Of All Flesh_ was that belief, faith or dogma ... and that can be faith in gods, God, or of physics. Whether manifested via text in a religious tome, or by virtue of observation of the natural world, one can come to believe in a set of laws. "Well God says ..." can be countered with "have you seen God?" Likewise, the laws of physics say that masses attract can be countered with "have you seen gravity or an electron, a quark or ...?" (I agree, for ordinary people like us things like gravity and inertia are pretty much theoretical) No matter which law of physics (either on a macro or micro scale), there always seem to be unanswered questions. I liken the argument of "who created earth? God. Who created God?" to the same as "Who created earth? The Big Bang? Who created The Big Bang?." Or as John Green mentions of Native American lore. "Who created earth? It is on the back of a turtle. What is the turtle standing on? Another turtle. What is the other turtle standing on? Another turtle.... it is _Turtles All The Way Down_ ." It is hard to understand the ways of gods, God, or unified theory of physics. What is the common person left to do but have faith in their own dogma. When is comes down to it, it is simply "Belief." (I don't believe in gravity; the Earth sucks. LOL)
As far as your "laws limiting God" are you saying God conforms to those laws, or that he wrote the laws? (If he must conform to those laws, then he is not all powerful, yeah?) Are there miracles? Or are they just anomalies yet to be explained by science?
What laws govern your conduct? Heinlein's _The Moon is a Harsh Mistress_ has this gem, _I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them. If I find them obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I_ alone _am morally responsible for everything I do_

@@kurtfox4944 well, obviously I would like to avoid answering the question of how much responsibility G-d has for the rules we discover but even if you believe there is no stone so large that G-d can't lift it, it seems - based on observation - that only very seldom does G-d actually move such stones.
