I think this book was actually a cautionary tale about what happens when you allow insecure men into your life. Keiko truly loved working at the convenience store and she was good at it, it made her happy and gave a sense of fulfillment. But as soon as that loser came along he started snuffing her light out and projecting his insecurities onto her for his own benefit because I think deep down he was not only just a loser but also jealous of her ability to feel so satisfied with a job many people see as menial. He was extremely insecure and relied on constantly talking down to her to survive - and she fell for it. I was happy for her at the end when she realized he was full of it and went back to what she loved.

I really liked the segment about allowing people who want to work jobs society will call menial work them as long as it makes them happy. Because it's like it's the people who look down on people that work these jobs that sometimes require their services at the end of the day and it's not something they personally want to do. So why so pressed about it. Great review.

I’m glad you liked that part! I’m really passionate about that - I have coworkers how do the tasks that are often misunderstood, but many of them do the work because they want and they enjoy it or feel it is their duty to. ❤ and thank you!!!

Our reading finally aligned, I read this last month! Such an amazing, strange, original, disturbing book. I can’t wait to read more by her, I’ve heard they get even weirder.

soooo excited to see you reviewing this book! i read this 2 years ago and it stuck with me! i'm amazed you finished it a few months ago and was able to recall so many details of it. i really was rooting for the character and really related to the character about not being bothered by society until the end which threw me off.

I feel like I’m the only one who thought this book was a little repetitive or just slow. It wasn’t until the end that I was like okay. Loved the protagonist and message

It is a little repetitive! I’m now wondering is this is a trait of the author, because Earthlings was also repetitive.

Late to the party, finished reading it a few days ago and your review did the most justice to the book out of all the other reviews did. A thing I didn't understand about its readers is the way they all said that the book is hilarious, I got the version with quotes on it and most of them are saying things like "quirky" or "silly" etc, which seems odd to me because I can't get how one can read the book and go "haha that was so funny", to me it was sad and tiresome, I could feel the main character's frustration in many scenes. I don't know if that's just me but that's how I interpreted it. Loved the book and will definitely be looking into Earthlings as well.

Yes! It’s really not a funny book and the humour that is there is darker. Earthlings … is unhinged hahah

After a three year reading slump, I picked this up in the beginning of this year and took about a month to read it….. my initial thought was that it was kinda odd and that perhaps I didn’t quite like it. I set my star reviews in Goodreads but about 3 weeks later, I had a moment where I was doing some mundane activity but in a routine matter that was very specific to me. I had the inner thought that “this is me in every fiber of my being” or whatever the main character says towards the end of the book when she realizes she “belongs” or is happy working in a convenience store. I went back to raise my star rating because I realized the book did something unexpected and perhaps i just didn’t quite get it at first lol 😅😅

Great Review. I like how you took the theme of this novel and applied it to RUclips and situations in the US.
Seen through the eyes of a Japanese woman who doesn’t fit in ,all the ideas about what society values seem ridiculous.

You may sympathize with the underachieving character, particularly if you're an overachiever, tho it's important to recognize that the desire to work in a convenience store forever possibly symptomizes a problem. Additionally, you may appreciate how clever the author is making a persuasive argument for an eccentric behavior, but deft language aside the sad dreariness of a life without ambition, hope, or expectation of an interesting or an exciting future stands out by itself IMHO.

Mmm, I think what's interesting about this particular story with this main character is that, in some ways, she is an overachiever in her job. She is contrasted with another character this is totally lazy, so in a way, some of her behavior is quite socially acceptable. This is also very autobiographical - the author worked in this same capacity for 18 or so years, so in a sense, I think it can also be viewed as waiting for the opportune times to pursue certain things, rather than doing so when others tell or expecting one to do so. Murata also have a very similar personality to her main character, which is arguably her fictionalized self.

@@alanaestelle2076 perhaps, tho I tend to look at an over-qualified worker as someone taking a job from someone not really qualified to do anything else.

@@jamesduggan7200 haha perhaps. Having been involved in the hiring of hundreds of people myself, it can be quite the nuanced process about who is getting what position and why or why not.
But in the context of this particular book, it’s a conversation, with a character like this and Murata using this to also critique Japanese society as well.
