this book is one of my faves! great point about the classism - I think that's deeply embedded in American society, too, as well as the idea we have to hit certain outward milestones to "be" successful (marriage, kids, careers, etc.). a lot of reviews of this book focus on Keiko possibly being autistic and/or asexual, and while I don't discount those possibilities, all I could think was, "wow, I relate so hard to this." 🤣 especially the part where she talks about copying other people's behaviors/speech bc she doesn't know quite what to do, and feeling relief that she can just follow a "script" of sorts while working in the store, since it's like one of the few places human interactions are kind of prescribed.

thank you for this! i think one thing the book explores well is our relationship with labour particularly our willingness to work. adding on to the class element it shows that despite reaping minimal gains, humans still desire work and to a certain extent view it as a structure in life. being able to participate and be productive holds intrinsic value independent of economic value.

Thanks for the great review. The term "incel" didn't occur to me while I was reading the book but you're absolutely right. I read this in one day (although I'm not a fast reader). Very unusual but also very compelling.

Hi, Do you think the book needs a trigger warning? I'm debating reading it?

the book was very two dimensional. Not a good book to read if you are looking to grow.
