    I have to admit your videos are really the best I have seen with explanation of how to dismantle the battery and what the capabilities are. Thank you so much for taking the time to help all us out! Or at least I really appreciate it. I'm going to create an off grid solar batter bank with this pack. Local junk yards in my area of California have them all day long for 2K with local pickup.

      I'd suggest doing it fast if the battery maintenance systems aren't working. The sooner it gets installed into another vehicle and the BMS restored, the better.

    FYI I have a 2012 Volt with 118K miles on it, I still get really good distance on my daily charge of 35-40 miles per charge.

    Anybody imaged replacing the Chevy Volt’s 18.4-kWh battery with a repackaged Tesla Cells groups = 103.0 kWh in the Chevy Volts Battery well / enclosure as it appears a Tesla Model S *103.0 kWh package of cell groups if restacked appropriately may actually fit in volume of space the Volts T shaped enclosure provides. Surly it appears posable approximating the cubic inches of volume Chevy provided for “there bulky 18.4KWh package is very nearly the displacement of Tesla’s cell groups if reconfigured.

    I know the orange fuse is rated for 600A but if I'm using this with a zilla controller and a series wound motor (not a Volt) how would I size fuses & contractors for amperage? What did you do on the E30? Please advise.

    Hi There, Good video. I am swapping a 2012 chevy volt battery with a 2018. Problem it has a different service disconnect plug. Do you know if I can swap the new plug for the old one. I see in the 2018 there is a resistor built in. On the 2012 I am not sure if it's the same resistor. Any clue. Thanks Dave

    This is very useful to understand how I might handle the battery pack once I pull it and either replace it in an (otherwise) pristine 2011 Volt with a used unit or replace any *obviously* defective submodule (or control boards) with the same from a donor salvage unit.
    I'm looking for example or advice for removing/replacing this battery pack in a Volt (2011). It *looks* like it is designed to drop out the bottom with good support under most (if not all) of the unit. I can find instructions on how to disable the HV *out* and hope the coolant connections are obvioius enough but would like to have some idea of what I'm getting into before I try to pull it!

    Is that 16 Kilowatts?....I think GM set up the Volt to not completely discharge...or fully charge....so, as to preserve battery life....I always suspected that after the warranty was up or in case consumers complained of reduced battery life; they would then open the system up with software or a change in the computer chip...

    I would like to have it heated for winter. for my house. it can get near 0 degrees F. and minus windchill. to keep them in their happy place. I would also like something like this for a EV conversion. even the motor from a volt or other to transplant. I was going to try building a motor controller fora DC motor I have. but that's old tec now. I would maybe go that route for a cart or something . but not a road vehicles. something like EVWest's BMW/Tesla! but. that's lots of fund$!!! good deal!!

    Even though the older volt has a hybrid battery pack, can you use it for an EV vehicle with longer range vs higher discharge capabilities?

    • @EVEngineering
      @EVEngineering  5 лет назад +2

      Sure. With any EV batteries if you want more range just add more batteries (up to a point) but it comes at a cost of weight and space. I can put 4 of the Volt banks in Sylent and get 150 miles of range.

    what is the nominal voltage of those units, is it 48v which can be charged up to 54? or is 44 volts of which can be charged up to 50 volts? im at a loss between if these are 12s or 13s battery packs . i am trying to figure out what charger to use for this for my EV project also where exactly did you attach your terminal wires ? as well as what gauge wire would you recommend?

      Thanks for the hint. I am no Volt expert so I had to rely on the dealers diagnostic report. They say the battery is dead and replacement would cost $6,700. They do not recommend this replacement due to the 125,000 mileage. I am looking for a 2012 owner that had an accident and would by the car to use his own battery. The car is in excellent condition.

    Good work.. Very interesting. I'm an Alternative Energy Pioneer within an NGO completing Edison's work in Low Voltage Distributed generation and DC storage for 21st Century Digital Devices. I was wondering about these.. My concern are how to interface from a solar charge controller to the BMK as Charging cell by cell is imperative to battery life. Also plumbing for cooling adopters. Can we talk?

    • @EVEngineering

      I am guessing that you haven't driven or worked on a Volt? Before the Volt, we had a Gen 2,and then a Gen 3 Prius. And after putting a couple hundred thousand miles on those I would strongly disagree that they were better then the Volt. We have over 100k miles on our Volt and we have only spent $75 on maintenance with 2 oil changes (other then tires), the fuel costs are MUCH lower then a Prius, and in every way the Volt is much more enjoyable to drive.
