    In this epsiode of Dialing In... I take a look at properly setting up the Noise Gate so that it sounds the way you need it to. Whether you are looking for a very natural gate or something more abrupt, I dive deep and see how to accomplish it all. I really hope you enjoy the video and that you find it useful. As always, thanks so much for watching!

    I really appreciate you taking the time to deep-dive on this. I'd never used a noise gate before owning a Stomp, so I had no idea how they worked or how I was supposed to set one up. And now it all makes sense. Thank you!

    Jason - I've enjoyed all of your videos, but this one absolutely surpassed the rest for me. Super informative, both about how the noice gate works, and how to go about dialing it in. I will be using this technique for sure. And, it will apply to non-Helix devices as well (if I ever find myself using a non-Helix device). Thank you for doing this one!

    The new horizon gate is a very effective noise gate IF used sparingly, because it shuts off rather hard. I hate that background noise, because even if you get all your gates right it's still present when playing, so the problem is still there on a fundamental level.... I have a pulsating noise that i thought was coming from dirty AC, but I tried running on ac powerbank and the noise was still there... Btw. -65db. 100ms. is the golden spot for the normal noisegate IMO ;-)

    great stuff Jason. Yeah many of your (and others out in Helix land) presets ARE noisy and I always have to remember to turn on the noise gate. Thanks for showing us why its not just doing the "Set it and forget it" setting that will work every time and that you really do have to "Dial it in" as is the case for every block in your chain. THIS is why you are the master sir. as even the lowly noise gate gets its own "Dialining in..." video :) Kep it up my friend. Take care. All the best.

    Nice hints, thank you! I refer to Noise gates only in hi-gain settings, else the built-in noise gate of my guitar (it's called volume poti) will do.

    I always use two gates on the Helix, the input gate very little until a certain kind of noise disappears and then another gate after the amp and EQ but before the delay and reverb. I also use a compressor even though these effects can work against each other it works for my tone stew so that's all that matters.

    I use them after my drive section and before the clean effects. Makes a really good transition for the overall tone. Also use them in conjunction with a compressor. A last thing to consider, if the real signal has fallen below or close to the level of the noise, do you really want it? Is is usable signal with 50% noise?

    I wonder how the Decay setting would change if you added different types of compressors to the signal chain. Or other volume based effects like tremolo. 🤔

    Excellent as usual, Jason! Great discussion of a very 'non-sexy' tool. Love the 'string vibrato' technique for finding sweet spots. Totally cleared up this topic for me! BTW, check out Steve Sterlacci's new vid on controlling RUclips playback with Helix! They have templates to control various DAW's as well, all built into Helix. Very Coool!

      only issue with the vibrato technique to dial in the noise gate is you will be wearing out your frets and strings much quicker :)

    When I play at my church (single coils).....I tend to get a lot of buzz/hum.....it goes away if I turn the volume knob to zero....if this buzz is coming from EMI, will the input gate eliminate this? If so, is it better to run all of my other pedals in the effects loop? (HX Stomp).

  • @musikus7092
    @musikus7092 4 года назад

    The input gate is a tone sucker, no matter which setting. Instead of that I use a gate-block after the IR. Sounds better. Not as much treble loss

    I recently created a "lively" sounding Preset, and it has 3 Snapshots. One Snapshot was quiet, but 2 had a fair amount of noise. I turned on the Input Noise Gate, and adjusted the controls basically as you described and I noticed something unexpected and problematic. Even when playing "much louder" than when I would expect the Noise Gate to engage, it was filtering a surprising amount of the highs in my sound and sucking the life out of it. This problem can be heard in your video as well. I rechecked my Noise Gate settings and found that I could not preserve my sound and still use the Noise Gate. Have you got any advice?

  • @MartyV666

    What I can't figure out is why if I have the Helix AND my mixing board both connected via USB, I get bad noise exactly like you are hearing in the vid. If I unplug the Helix USB, 90% of the noise is gone, but now I can't use HX edit :( any ideas?

  • @cg1903
    @cg1903 4 года назад +1

    thanks Jason / I use the gate with P90’s to diminish noise and works great. Am curious why you didn’t also address the Impedance control (Guitar In-Z)...

    • @RapttorX
      @RapttorX 4 года назад +1

      because the In-Z dosent affect the noise, it only affects the sound. Its only there because its part of the input block.

    All my overdrive presets are noisy to a point where the noise gate is perfectly useless, both with singles and humbuckers. When enabled, it just eats up my gain and kills my sustain no matter the settings. So I keep it disabled most of the time, preferring putting up with the noise over having a crappy tone. I guess the noise comes from the power mains of my apartment building.

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog 4 года назад

      time for a power conditioner to clean up that A/C voltage? they arent that much $ to buy.

    One thing that annoys me about the input block is that it effects the DI recording. It would be great if you could bypass the input noise gate when recording the DI signal.
