In this episode of Dialing In... I take a look at utilizing the 3 Band Comp which is the Multiband compressor we have in the Helix. This can be a very powerful tone shaping tool when used properly and in this video I take a detailed look at the various parameters and functions. I really hope you enjoy the video...
As always, thanks so much for watching...

This is very useful for bass more than guitar! Keeps the low end tight and the mids/highs dynamic

Very useful video, thank you - I've just bought a Brent Mason telecaster, and am struggling with the difference in low end between the bridge pickup and the mini-humbucker in the neck. I think this is the solution to my problem!

Great video Mr Sadites! I had not figured out a three-band compressor yet so now I understand completely and it's a powerful tool. I have yet to get my shelf EQ to give me the sound I'm looking for but I will check out your videos on that and see if I'm missing something.

Absolutely, this tool is going to be so useful for me now that I'm facing and issue with the 4th harmonic on the D string of my JTV-89F, it simply sounds awfully hi in dB in certain models/amps, even while sliding my finger over the string. I'll surely follow all of your recommendations an d I think I'll ge rid of it with this tool, Jason, thanks again for everything!!!

What's the lowest the high frequency crossover can go?
Andy Sneap does a mtiband compression trick to take palm mutes using the waves c4 plug-in, but the only range that needs to be compressed is 65 to 280hz. It doesn't look like the high frequency can go down that low... This is a limitation with the Axe Fx II as well... They don't give you any range you want, but a limited range that doesn't allow you to achieve this. :/
Basically, I have crazy palm mutes going on and need to tame them. High passing or EQ does not do the trick adequately for my specific purpose, without thinning out the sound too much. This is kind of critical for me especially since there is a lot of string excursion when I do certain alternate tunings and this is the only way to tame the palm mutes without using 2 different guitars with different string gauge.. However, I can only lug one guitar around and it needs to cover the alternate tunings.
    Thanks.

    So thanks to u I now understand multi-band compression, impulse response and tone shaping, but what’s a guitar? 😆 #newbie #elementary #line6

A huge overlook is that they limited the x-over frequencies. It is typical in recording for metal to use a multiband to just compress somewhere in the 250 to 400 hz range for example, or 140 to 300 or whatever, to control palm mutes.
Limiting the range of this compressor doesn't allow you to do this and other tricks.

It is not necessary if YOU deem it not necessary, Jason uses the LA Comp as subtle compression, as he describes as "settle glue", using no more than 1 to 2 Dbs of peak reduction. I can always go without it or save DSP if YOU desire not to use it. It is all about YOUR tone goals and workflow to achieve those goals. Jason teaches you how to use these tools and it is up to you, your ears, and what works for you. There is never really a right or wrong, only preferred techniques that ultimately may or may not work for you and YOUR quest for creating great tones.
I thought I may have bought a piece of gear that wasn't going to work for me when I first got my Helix Floor. Then I discovered Jason's tutorials and 'click', I had a MUCH MUCH better understanding how to use the Helix and I just fell in love with it. Now I create presets for each of my guitars based on my goals for that guitar and Jason's vids made it much easer for me and I'm sure hundreds of others. Be careful adding a fuzz pedal in the front of the chair as it will adjust your impedance drastically changing your tone (Jason has a great video about that subject). He is not on Line6's payroll, he just understands the tool and can explain how to use it for YOUR desired results.
Edit: spelling and such. Runon sentences are free of charge. :0)
