Eminem - Kamikaze - Hip-Hop - Album Review
#Eminem #Kamikaze #HipHop
I haven't seen Mark this pissed since the AJR review
Except AJR didn't have a fanbase to let down or a legacy to shit on.
mariokarter13 "Am I out of touch?...No, it's the children who are wrong."
Old Man Yells at Soundcloud
I honestly think he was more pissed HERE than with AJR.
AJR?
That part about the cracked glass and seeing a bit of reality but not enough to change was freaking poetic, man.
I also gave it a watch/10
This has to be one of the angriest reviews Mark's ever done.
Sam Miller You haven't seen Tangled Up and The Click.
I've seen the Tangled Up review. The Click review, I know by reputation but I'm afraid to watch because I actually kind of like AJR (even though I recognize their faults). Maybe one of these days I'll work up the courage.
You can feel the dissaponting especially from such a once great legend. What a fucking fall from grace.
"over-written bars and under-thought content" you put it perfectly
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Revival. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical grammar most of the bars will go over a typical listener's head. There's also Eminem's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these bars, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Revival truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Eminem's existential catchphrase "Your booty is heavy duty like diarrhea," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Marshall Mather's genius wit unfolds itself on their speakers. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Mom's Spaghetti tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
The J Cole defense
mariokarter13
That fact you had to overthink something to try and shit on it is exactly what he was about and only further proving him right genius lmao. Mostly the defense was based around prejudging the album by the tracklisting. Along with people challenging his legacy like he's undeserving of his placement in the game.
Eminem wants to have his cake and eat it. He's saying he took an L, literally stepping on Revival in the music video for Fall, yet in the same breath y'all are sleeping on Revival, you need a very high IQ to understand Revival. He's like a bitchy girlfriend pissed because she knows you're right, but won't actually concede the point.
@@mariokarter13 Thanks for that
But do you watch Rick and Morty?

Bro, Mark. This is why I love you. Hahaha.
Never lose your love and passion dude.
Watch out, Mark, Eminem could be coming for you with his next album considering that he’s in his bitter old man/“old man yells at clouds” meme years

@@christaker8953 I hope 2 years after this comment that you actually grew up to respect people’s opinions.
I hope you got better things to do than to find 2yr old comments to respond to but obviously not
This is the first time I've seen a review where the critic is going against the majority's public reception, but doesn't have tons of dislikes. I guess the review is really that entertaining.
The album is rushed but also 6 months late.
I see fire in the thumbnail. Things should get interesting.
Well damn I didn't know how right I was.
I think one person em forgot to reach out to for help on this album is Kevin abstract, who is the most likely to fix his biggest issues here. Hooks, and making good points against criticism. For example, songs like junky and swamp are both their own examples of good critical response and a fantastic infectious hook.
At best Em would only give Kevin a hook a la what he did to Phresher on "Chloraseptic".
The fact that Em's not receiving the accolades that he did back in the early 2000s despite the fact that he feels he's putting out content that's better than than what the hip-hop zeitgeist is churning out at the moment is probably what fuels his insecurities, and while alot of criticisms towards Em are totally valid, like what you bring up in this video, I've seen SO much empty criticism from elitists on my facebook feed just cause he isn't hip anymore like he used to be in the 2000s, and while Em's earned alot of that bragging rights based on his name and accomplishments alone, like you said he'd benefit alot more from getting out of Detroit more often and doing more soul searching. i think a bit of experimentation would actually go a long way for Em as an artist as well, wouldn't say i'm a hardcore fan by any means, but i've heard all his material and at this point in his career, i think it's either make a major transition over to a different sound while still retaining the quality of your music or die out and become irrelevant, but the chances of the latter happening are far more likely than the former, given the quality of his albums have been declining, and cause of his age as well.
fire in the thumbnail = 1/10
never mind.
Shady Records was never intended to make mega stars. It is a smaller boutique label. Nevertheless, they produced many gold and platinum albums, and even one superstar in 50 Cent. That is more than anyone signed to a small label can realistically expect.
franz morhart Exactly. He tried pushing so many people like Obie Trice, Cashis etc, but it just didn't work. With the exception of 50, they wanted more Eminem.
Spectrum Pulse Oh yeah, Lil Twist, Gudda Gudda, T Streets got that push from Young Money which made them superstars. Hasn't it?
honestly the second Revival happened I knew Eminem would do exactly what he did here
I didn't expect it to be as boring as it was but whatever

Oh boy, flames in the title card. Time to brace myself.
I'm so glad that Joyner Lucas is on a top 10 hit. Its refreshing to hear a high quality rap song get that big and it's so great to see an underground rapper become mainstream.
You can't say the album doesn't live up to it's name I suppose.
Jason Guarnieri well it’s hitting for a lot of people and missing for a lot too, makes sense oddly enough

I loved this album, high replay value! He's swinging punches and he's angry again! I saw some growth too, even in his age. Some songs were a fresh approach, for Em. I'm excited for his next project, fir real.
8.5/10. Rating.
Top 3 songs: Lucky You, Venom, & Good Guy.
Bryan WithaY venom and nice guy over not alike? Lol what
Like 3 okay tracks on this album, none of which I will be returning to. Eminem should have stopped 15 years ago.
He’s just cringy and painful to listen to now.
Him attacking critics of revival would be a lot less pathetic if that album wasn’t trash.
I don't want him to stop. He's great. Lol
Stuart Keating Maybes he’s great if you’re one of the “I don’t like hip hop but I like Eminem” people but there is just so much better hip hop than modern Eminem.
Lol why does everyone say that when you saw you think Eminem is great? Yes I listen to hip hop and I like Eminem as well. It sounds kind of pretentious acting like "you like Eminem? Well you just don't like hip hop at all". It's opinions and that's it.
This albums great. You tripping
My favourite part is your note on Bloom. Still great review, you are someone I'm going to keep following. Thanks for keeping it real my man.
I keep getting the feeling that Eminem is just....never going to learn from what his critics have to say or understand that him constantly crapping on newer rappers makes him look like an old man yelling at today's music not being good as it was 20 years ago.
For as good as his flow is and for how he was a defining act in hip hop in the early 2000s, he is absolutely HORRIBLE at handling criticism and not being in the spotlight over other rappers.
If the next album he releases takes absolutely none of the criticism to heart, it will be his worst album, regardless of whether or not his flows or production are better, because then it will be old hat and Eminem will feel even more culturally stagnant in today's day and age.
Billboardguy1 Exactly. But because Eminem just happens to be 46, they think it's just old yelling at new because it's new. Nah, it's because they suck. Is it too hard to put a little effort? I'm definitely curious how Eminem's new album will turn out.
Billboardguy1 It's a tired trend, everybody moved on except for Eminem. There's *always* gonna be shit in the mainstream, nobody is going to change that. And his sell out Venom track only makes him look hypocritical. He's put out shit albums and can't accept or live with the fact that he's *not* the greatest. He was told that by his peers and fans in the early 00's, and he let the fame get to his head. After this album I think Eminem diss tracks are what he deserves.
Julian Felton What about what I said made you think I was offended, lol. At least I explained myself, all you did was call me retarded. I'm sure you passed
debate class with flying colors.
And I never said I conformed to shitty mainstream music, there are plenty of non popular conscious hip hop that's way more impactful and less insecure than anything on Kamikaze. Go listen to some
Denzel Curry, or Open Mike Eagle, or Quelle Chris, there's a lot more artists out there that aren't Lil Pump. Grow up.
@@julianfelton3068 Conforming to shitty music trends? You mean like how Em is actively taking after Lil Pump and Migos' flows as well as going to Mike Will Made It for production?
IAmMelloYellow
Illiteracy is truly alive because if that's all you got out of you seriously have bigger problems than worrying about Em. Also I never said you did say that again read the comment Jesus lol. Also those people you name while decent artist aren't on Em's level regardless of how you feel. Grow up really when all you're doing is regurgitating the reviewer's opinion without an absolute thought of your own that's laughable lol.
How are you offended or should I say hater because of the latter part of your comment read it.
I think this was a great review Hun much like you I was a huge fan and I could really feel your dissapointment. It's worse knowing he has the talent but I thought your hall of mirrors metaphor was so beautifully on point. Love the passion, great channel btw you have Great content xxx
even if you liked this album pretty much everyone can agree that the relationship songs weighed it down.........shocker
Yay!You finally covered this album!I personally like Eminem’s older stuff better but that’s just me!Lol!Great review!
Savage review.
I liked it , but I get your frustration
Normally I'm a silent fan but I wanna practice leaving public opinions, so here's my piece on this current debacle...
Currently going through as much of Eminem's discography as possible just to understand the history behind his career, just see how we got to this point. Finished Encore, gonna be going onto the 8 Mile soundtrack and Relapse, maybe gonna look at Curtain Call even if it's mostly past songs. Before all that, I only listened to Kamikaze once. There were points that I agreed with Em on in terms of a lot of his gripes with modern mainstream rap and I liked a lot of his flows and rapping, but it's genuinely disheartening to see him burrowing himself in his own insecurity and not getting why Revival got as much backlash as it did.
And I get that most fans will appreciate Eminem telling more stories and delivering sharper flows, and even if I can't agree with them, I'll get it. But it gets hard to stomach when the more immature fans start turning on the caps button and try to justify Eminem's sourness and hypocrisy, or complaining that critics 'didn't give the album enough listens' and have 'trash opinions on hip hop' and don't get 'the deeper meaning of the lyrics' because they gave it a negative review, etc.
As for me, so far my fav albums of Eminem's are probably MMLP and Eminem Show, and even if MMLP2 ends up being a good/great album, I'm concerned about how bad it's gonna get after that and whether or not the downward spiral will continue from there. Then again, one can only really hope for a miracle, right?
I liked the album before coming here but you gave me a lot of things to think about. I agree with a lot of thing you said and have my own concerns but i am more than satisfied with this album. Thanks for the review.
The album is projected to easily debut at #1 in album sales. This will be Eminem's 9th consecutive #1 album. Don't always listen to the critics. Especially when they are reviewing an album that spends a bunch of time talking shit about critics lmao
SuperSourSweet T Sales and streams don't make an album good, it just means a lot of people listened to the album.
@@iammy3696 That might be true the first time, maybe the second time, maybe even the third time, but after the 9th consecutive time there must be a disconnect here. We what you have is an artist that has earned the respect of their audience and whether they love or hate him they want to hear him. I'm not so sure Tom Brady should listen to his critics if hes still going to superbowls my dude.
SuperSourSweet T That also leads to a "Anything I do is flawless and I'll never fall off" complex. I'm not gonna deny Em's contributions to music and the culture, but people will praise anything with his name on it despite quality. Not just talking about simply liking the album, but ignoring legitimate critiques and such. You can like an album and acknowledge it's flaws.
@@iammy3696 Yes but you can also defend an album or an artist because you hold a genuine belief. If someone is just trying to be an asshole well, that's just something we have to deal with in life.
lol damn, you went in on this one!I've never seen spectrum pulse this mad
I think Mark definitely could have used a session of The Sims 2 and burn up shit to get that anger out.
But damn, I feel Mark here with that heated emotions. Being on the spectrum myself I get upset if I raise my voice at a high level.
I can say that people who know how bad revival was should have known what they were getting with an album called kamikaze. Its not quite career suicide, because the same people who have been bumping to mumble rap will bumb to this since he did roast that kind of music. The spotify numbers at the very minimum show that people are willing to eat it up. I can appreciate that this album had the rage and passion that Em was missing. But I knew what else Kamikaze meant when he called out joe budden and akademiks, since budden even said that he would still support Em. Man it is Nicki Minaj again except in song form. I think songs like the lucky you and not alike will stay, but idk how long people will eat up em just being angry with critics.

I don't agree with you on this, this was a solid project with incredible word play, similes, double entendre , metaphors, story telling, and production.
You sound so personally betrayed by Eminem in this video.
Well yeah,he’s a classic rapper that gave Mark a bad album experience & that can be the worst type of review,an artist you like making an album that doesn’t learn its mistakes.
@Prepare your ass because pablo no, it’s because Eminem has lost his touch with what he was and we can all see how useless Eminem is to the rap scene now. Coming from an Eminem fan, that is a tragedy.
@Prepare your ass because pablo if you like the album that’s fine, but let other people have their own opinions on it.
@Prepare your ass because pablo also please don’t insult people, you’re better than that.
Kamikaze is a fantastic album-my fifth favorite Eminem album ever. Kamikaze reminded me of classic Eminem, updated for the modern age with contemporary beats
I just miss his superb story-telling ability, and smooth, charisma driven flows, these essential elements are missing from the majority of all his latter day albums.
franz morhart exactly Mark is too strict This album is almost perfect cut normal and nice guy this album is damn near flawless
franz morhart that doesn't make the content any better. At this point, Eminem has been doing the same shtick for nearly 20 years, it's getting old and modern production can only carry it so far. Classic Eminem isn't bad, but it's extremely played out at this point. Nobody wants to admit he's out of his element, especially after he quit drugs.
There's no story telling here besides the crappy relationship tracks and his flow is far from smooth, still overdone and staccato
Klasse His flow is back on track. Stepping stone is awsome that hook is gold. Nice guy is bad normal is alright but they shouldnt of been their i love good guy. This album has flaws here and their but for what it is its an album of the year contender.

First of its better than Revival (Not saying much but wanted to get that out the way) but Em going on this long album tangent about people dislike isn’t what I want to hear especially if Em is going to be butthurt about all the criticism. And I hate to say this but this also shows Em as a person who got so much critical acclaim that when faced with the slightest bit of criticism, he cracks and feels the need to get “revenge” (The Em calls Paul skit says it all). Sure I rather listen to this that Reveal but this is a uglier album.

I liked his album Kamakaze:
It was the Revival of Slim Shady
The first 3 were almost flawless
Tracks 4-10 were ok: the best being fall, the skits were kinds funny
Kamikaze: the hook wasn't great but love the theme!
For the last 3: in track 11: Jessie's singing was too high pitched

I'd say this is better than Revival, but not by much. Em needs to stop caring about what the critics say, and move the fuck on, he's starting to sound pissy and bitchy as Hell. And yet, I think his attack on rappers like MGK, Migos and Drake were all totally worth it. I want more from Em though, this is proof he can bring his A-Game, but man alive he needs to try better than get pissy just because his album got polarized by fans and critics alike.

It's funny seeing this review now just shows you didn't even understand the meaning behind the album "Kamikaze" nor it's songs. Track "Nice guy" is such a brilliant track, it perfectly embodies duality of being bi-polar via it's hook and then leads in to "Good guy", and I figured it out on my first listen. I was shocked by the hook at first, but when I listened to what was going on it was perfect. It's just cringeworthy to watch someone who didn't even get through the album clearly.

"But I've said for years that sheer technical ability is often not enough if you want to construct good songs or albums"... Doesn't this describe Lil Dicky?
Joyner, Hopsin, Logic too
Demon Fucker Probably NF to some degree as well.
@@usernameof5 This doesn't describe Joyner at all since his most popular songs are all storytelling songs that everyone agrees are great tracks. Outside of I'm Not Racist which is polarizing. The rest of his popular stuff (not counting remixes) are all great storytelling tracks. I'm Sorry, Happy Birthday, Ross Capicchioni...etc...etc.
I wouldn't even say this describes Hopsin either. Cause Hopsin is goofy as shit and over the top. You really gonna say the guy who wrote Happy Ending is trying to be a super technical rapper?
Only person this explains is Logic who really is nothing outside of "Guys I sure do know how to rap. I don't talk about anything but man do I sure know how to flow my words and rhyme things. Peace, Love and Positivity."
It's hard to notice with just the vocals, but it's a problem a lot of musicians that play actual instruments have.

in my opinion there should have been more funny songs on this album. Eminen used to diss people on his older albums all the time but at least back then there was some wit to it even if most of the time he wasn't being serious about hating that celebrity.
