LOL Mark. I can honestly say I've never disagreed with you more on an album. I love this whole thing start to finish. Hm, personally I think part of Mark's distaste is comparison to other artists who already have done music in this mold, but to him, better. Obviously Mark sites Jon Bellion and Twenty One Pilots, but if I may share a personal example that more defines my view of the album, I decided to listen to "No Grass Today" out of curiosity, and I wasn't angry but I have no use for it. I have no use for it because I already heard this song earlier this year. That song is "Drugs" by Alltta. Now, Alltta is collaboration between rapper Mr. J Medeiros and producer 20syl, and their song "Drugs" is remarkably similar to "No Grass Today" in concept, execution, lyrical ideas, even some production elements. And I would say both sound about equally preachy, "Drugs" is not like my favorite song or anything. But to me it just, works a lot better. The first reason for me is that it has a better melody. I don't what to grasp onto in "No Grass Today" because the vocal melody isn't well matched by the instrumental tones. There isn't an underlying harmonic structure that sticks in my head on "No Grass Today" and I kinda struggle to call up what the songs sounds like to my memory. 20syl has a clear melodic and harmonic throughline in his song that just connects with me a lot more, and even though that song also has a lot of melodic ideas, they seem connected, they all fit the harmoic structure, and feel like logical extensions of the last. It sticks in my memory. And that includes Mr. J Medeiros's flow. Honestly, I feel his flow fits the song melodicaly more than in AJR (not sure of the singer's name). And the lyrics make Mr. J Medeiros a bit more of a real figure. "Drugs" has these very specific details and circumstances that flow into each other. Not perfectly, but it builds reasoning, to explain what Medeiros thinks on drugs and lets him make his statement on it. And even though that statement is a tad wishy washy, you see why. He sounds like a person who has experience with this. AJR sounds a bit less believable, and more importantly, the ideas don't really build as well to me. Is "No Grass Today" my worst song ever? No, I just have no use for it and when I listen to it, I can only think of songs that sound better.

Why does everyone in this comments section hate them? I’ve shown their songs to almost all my friends and almost all of them fell in love with the band.
Personally I don't hate them because, their music isn't really giving detestable messages or anything, things worth feeling offended over, and some of their structural incompetence may be hatable but I shan't give it. But if you like them, well, give a listen to Jon Bellion. I don't feel like their songs need to exist, because there are just better versions I already know.
It is because he only presented that songs that fit his point, and the people in the comments like him, therefore they agree with everything he says like pathetic mind slaves.
lol okay, I'm gonna say this right now: I enjoy both bands quite a bit. AJR has problems, but I really do respect them and enjoy the majority of their songs. But their original Overture (nor their new Overture) don't SOUND anything like Hand of God. The IDEA of mashing most of the songs on the album into a piece was similar, sure. But this is not a new idea in the lightest sense. A traditional Overture was mainly used in classical music at first (I believe) where it served as a prelude to the show. It, too, combined several of the ideas of the upcoming music into a single piece. My point here is that there's a difference between using a trope that's been in music for several centuries and blatantly ripping off a melody that's used in about a third of a song
Still an amazing review. Absolutely love this because it sums up how I feel about this album. I hate how the writing embodies people who don’t care about anything in their life, I hate the autotune scat breakdowns throughout the album, and I hate their somehow vocal fanbase. I’ve seen interviews of the group and they’re definitely good people. I just wish they’d make better music
I'd never heard of AJR before you talked about them on Billboard Breakdown. I guessed that the name was just the first letters of their first names..... ...and I was right. Why am I not surprised?
fantastic review! you almost exceeded CoverKillerNation's meltdowns over bad metal albums.. I'm impressed, and happy you torched this sonic nightmare. Thanks for the laughs.
When I saw the 21-minute run-time, the flames around the thumbnail, and the description, I nearly went and grabbed some popcorn. And this review definitely didn't disappoint. As much as I feel for you that you had to listen to this album enough to review it, I think the end result is one of your most entertaining reviews ever. I would say I hope the next album you cover isn't so painful for you to listen to, but I don't think it's possible for that to NOT happen.
Usually, when I see an album from an act I've never heard of reviewed by you, it's because it's some amazing work and a solid contender for the year-end list(s). I will now sincerely retract that self-advice.
I don't understand why so many people hate AJR. While Panic at the Disco makes really good songs, and Brendon Urie is one of the most likeable celebrities of all time, they make music for a specific niche, so I can understand people not liking them. But there's nothing to hate about AJR. Their songs are good, they're incredibly likeable people, and they have a nice, relaxing vibe about them.
@@BingbongDeNiro the majority of the music was made by jack and Ryan who were 19 and 22 I think when this came out. they’re millennials/ gen z (I think late gen z actually) making songs. its about their experiences, so they would be relatable to an audience in that age group. i don’t understand why most of the critics “insult” them by saying it’s millennial pop music. like it’s pop music made by millennials I don’t know what they were expecting-
This review stands as one of the best - if not the best dismantling of any record yet. The vocabulary used + the roasts (see the glee fan-fiction one) are incredible. LOVE IT
I was finding it hard to watch this video because of the music in the background This album is like a bunch of business suits threw every terrible modern pop cliche into one abysmal album
this video is true history also watching the ajr fans get mad in the comments is hilarious 💀 like dude chill its just a review. he’s allowed to have an opinion
I'm going to be upfront, but I love AJR. Musically, they stand nothing near indie - they're a modern pop group...yet they're different. I'd much rather hear AJR on the radio that Justin Bieber or fucking Despacito. AJR concocts ridiculously catchy music, and I love everything they do on that side. Now...defending them on lyrics, meaning, purpose, methods...I mean for god's sake they made an album trying to talk about the fall of us because we like social media too much. That's their "theme", their deep insight on the human condition. At least Jon Bellion's The Human Condition had some surprisingly wise songs past the catchiness. I don't listen to AJR for wisdom, for lyrics, or for a deeper meaning. They just own the pop that they create, and I'm fine with that
I eventually caved and heard the album and... yeah it was stupid and shallow but... I couldn't hate it though. It's too precious. and a few songs are actually catchy. I'd feel wrong to punch down, so I just infrequently revisit this video so Mark can do it for me.
You think this is bad. And it is but trust me this is nothing to Corey Feldman's ''Angelic 2 the core'' that album made me question why I am still on this earth
I will never excuse this music as being "experimental" or "progressive". Real progressive music is about PUSHING constraints, not throwing them out the fucking window.
AJR succccccccks. I work at a theater and we have to listen to the “quirky” new single, “100 Bad Days” “A hundred bad days makes a hundred good stories, a hundred bad stories makes me interesting at parties.
I’m happy someone else is referencing that line. I have such a dislike for AJR and Neotheater in particular that I’ve made that line an inside joke with my friends and family about something that is obnoxiously bad.
What’s funny is that I heard Weak and Sober Up on the radio and wondered about this band since I thought those songs weren’t too bad. I listened to everything they made at the time, and had a strong dislike of all of it. The Click was probably my favorite overall, actually, but I would still give it a 2 so that looks more like a diss at the band than a compliment to the album.
holy shit mark, you gotta roast ajr like that? hahhah you explaining this is so entertaining 😂 i honestly loved the album, and i still do after the video, and i loved the concert i went to as well. but you have your opinions
@@theelevatedsheep i saw it, it was just "liked the review but you had some info wrong blah blah blah" it really isn't much but them "proving" they're independent when it comes to lyrcs and music
Kind of late on this but I actually love this album because I feel they wanted some of the songs to be funny. The songs like Call my Dad and Bud Like You are some of my favorites because they're just weird songs to listen to with no serious meaning. The creators are 3 brothers making music so I feel that it's fine and suits their personality to make these strange songs. They literally just make random songs that they feel like making and put them together in an album and I like the randomness of it. I don't like all the songs on their but I like some because of this randomness and some lyrics are relatable to me. I thought that was obvious since they started getting known from the song I'm Ready which is super strange (I mean it literally has spongbob in it for no reason) but it's catchy and it's just a song for the heck of it. Overall I know that not all the songs are like this and some are trying to be serious and relatable which I even find annoying but all artist do this and they are still growing and getting experience. Their music really just seems for their fans who are familiar with their personalities and brotherly relationship with one another. It's for people who don't really take every song they listen to so seriously, so I can see why you and other people don't like them. Anyways I'm going to subscribe since this was an interesting video and I actually enjoyed how passionate you were about this and you took the time to analyze everything in you're own way and research some fact that I didn't know of even although my view of the band didn't change. Thanks for sharing your opinion and being serious about your job, it was very funny and entertaining, keep it up.
So, I decided that, you know, I can listen to a song from AJR, it's good to hear bad songs sometime. So I listened to "No Grass Today." And then I listened to Jon Bellion's "Morning in America." because I prefer the original. The only good thing about "No Grass Today" was that it was not remotely catchy due to... I wouldn't call it a melody.

Honestly this might be my favorite review of yours so far. Love the raw, explicit no bs approach.
The writing of this review is more interesting than the actual album
This is music criticism history
Why does everyone in this comments section hate them? I’ve shown their songs to almost all my friends and almost all of them fell in love with the band.
Personally I don't hate them because, their music isn't really giving detestable messages or anything, things worth feeling offended over, and some of their structural incompetence may be hatable but I shan't give it.
But if you like them, well, give a listen to Jon Bellion. I don't feel like their songs need to exist, because there are just better versions I already know.
I like this band
The beats. The lyrics. The vocals!! Aaaaaa
ChaseM same I’m in love with all their music it’s so good but everyone here hates it
It is because he only presented that songs that fit his point, and the people in the comments like him, therefore they agree with everything he says like pathetic mind slaves.
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who noticed that the melody of "Netflix Trip" sounded suspiciously similar to "Human" by Jon Bellion
well Hand Of God sounds suspiciously similar to Overture on AJR’s first album, which came out first.
lol okay, I'm gonna say this right now: I enjoy both bands quite a bit. My point here is that there's a difference between using a trope that's been in music for several centuries and blatantly ripping off a melody that's used in about a third of a song
a landmark of music criticism
20:02 Mark correctly predicts his next 1/10, holy shit

3 years later, this is still the best album review Mark has ever made.
"If this were presented to a marketing director, he'd order everyone in the corporate office to commit seppuku."
This review is a work of art
Still an amazing review. Absolutely love this because it sums up how I feel about this album. I hate how the writing embodies people who don’t care about anything in their life, I hate the autotune scat breakdowns throughout the album, and I hate their somehow vocal fanbase. I’ve seen interviews of the group and they’re definitely good people. I just wish they’d make better music
I think It's just about music taste... I like AJR but I know that not everyone will like it. For example I don't like rap. My opinion🤞

When I saw the 21-minute run-time, the flames around the thumbnail, and the description, I nearly went and grabbed some popcorn. And this review definitely didn't disappoint. I will now sincerely retract that self-advice.
I’m convinced everyone hardcore defending AJR in this comment section was raised from age 1-18 off of nothing but Disney movies.

This review stands as one of the best - if not the best dismantling of any record yet. The vocabulary used + the roasts (see the glee fan-fiction one) are incredible. LOVE IT
I was finding it hard to watch this video because of the music in the background
This album is like a bunch of business suits threw every terrible modern pop cliche into one abysmal album
This comment section is a war
Sober up is literally the only song I like from ajr so I'm giving them props for that
this video is true history
also watching the ajr fans get mad in the comments is hilarious 💀
like dude chill its just a review. he’s allowed to have an opinion
Yeah ikr, theyre so salty 💀
They just own the pop that they create, and I'm fine with that
Noah Ford I’d much rather hear Despacito. It’s an upbeat, fun tune with some flavor that isn’t really, really, REALLY trying to be more than it is.
@@jakesibley897 no
Despacito is trying to be a lot more than it is
I eventually caved and heard the album and... yeah it was stupid and shallow but... I couldn't hate it though. It's too precious. and a few songs are actually catchy. I'd feel wrong to punch down, so I just infrequently revisit this video so Mark can do it for me.

I work at a theater and we have to listen to the “quirky” new single, “100 Bad Days”
“A hundred bad days makes a hundred good stories, a hundred bad stories makes me interesting at parties.

You, sir, just got a sub from...absolutely no one who matters to you. But this was _fiery._ Bravo!
This is one of the best roasts to an album of all time.

So, I decided that, you know, I can listen to a song from AJR, it's good to hear bad songs sometime. So I listened to "No Grass Today."
And then I listened to Jon Bellion's "Morning in America." because I prefer the original. The only good thing about "No Grass Today" was that it was not remotely catchy due to... I wouldn't call it a melody.
