    My success in breaking 90 came after playing for an entire season only Pitch & Putt courses.....You learn very quickly distance control, pitching and chipping.
    Also P&P courses tend to have tiny greens in comparison to standard 18 hole courses, so accuracy is crucial.
    When went back to full standard length courses, the fairways and greens looked huge in comparison.
    The problem now is trying to break 80..... ho hum, this journey never seems to end !!!!

  • @justinstephenson9360

    To break 90 is reasonably easy provided you can do 3 things:
    1) drive straight as long as the distance is 180 yards or more. Hit it 230 yards into the trees means your 3rd shot will be barely any closer to the green.
    2) chip/pitch competently from 50/60 yards and in - so your next shot is a putt. Bad pitches end up in bunkers which take 1-2 shots to get out of
    3) Putt well. 2 putts per green, 3 putt on a regular basis is a problem
    Despite playing off 10 (ish) I struggle with more than one of the above

    • @VacantCard
      @VacantCard 5 лет назад +3

      100% agree. I score in the mid 80's despite an ABYSMAL iron game. Driver carries around 200 yards relatively straight, second shot puts me within 50 yards, wedge it onto the green and 2 putt for bogey. Occasional greens in reg or 1-putts put a handful of pars on the card and boom, sub 90 golf!

    • @m.youhall9130
      @m.youhall9130 5 лет назад

      So true. I hit Driver 265-282 but it is straight only 3-4 holes. Further, my chip / pitch shots from 50 yards often roll off or end up in a bunker. As such, I score around 95. NEXT YEAR!!!

    • @michaelbouchard659
      @michaelbouchard659 3 года назад +1

      Exactly. I can manage bogey golf with 2-4 triple bogeys a round. Iron out the 3 putts and duffed chips and mid 80's should be common.

    This is the reality for over 90% of club golfers and great to see you facing the problems we do: not able to reach par 4’s in two and if you do it is a wood/hybrid or long iron into the green; as you have said recently par 3’s that are over 200 yds and can require a driver off the tee; needing to 2 putt or single putt to make a score. Great to see a video that actually equates to the game I play!

I'm probably a funny 30 handicapper (if 1 round counts as a handicap) because I strike the ball pretty well, even with my blades, just inconsistent. Hoping to drop to the mid 80's pretty quick and then focus on my short game. Hoping for 5 years to scratch, which is a pretty lofty goal, but I have a flexibe schedule so Ill probably get a membership and golf every day. These latest series of videos have been bloody fantastic. From wet spinning wedges to fixing shanks or hitting fairways.
    I am the youngest, at 52, in my regular group with the eldest being 73 and as much as I might hit a driver past them they are so consistent. Like you say play it down the middle and then chip and putt. They are still on a better handicap than me. My GA handicap is 18.3, local handicap is 20. If you’re going to belt the cover off the ball keep it straight or pay the penalty.
    Looking forward to the next one. Thanks team.

    21.4 handicapper. Playing from the White’s is a definite bogey game +. I attribute 4 to 6 strokes to lack of focus the rest is just lack of distance. Side note: heard Mark talking about the ten finger grip. Tried it and enjoyed immediate success. It allows me to release the club through impact which lets the club face square. Very excited to get my first round in using ten finger grip. More to follow.

    To break 90 I gave my self 5 shots in each hole and tried to go round in under par until I hit that beautiful 89 one day.. I still use this even now if I want a good score in a comp.. no risky shots, driver usually stays in the bag as well.. thanks again for the video. Keep up the good work 👍👍

    Really good video. I am 18hcp at the moment and the main focus for me for every hole is to make sure I get something in play off the tee. If I do that then chances are good because I have more options on how to get to the green, Go for it, Lay up, look for the best bail, run it in , fly it in etc. I always consider my second shot as my "free shot". Where guys like us maybe stumble is the likes of that lovely bunker shot Coach hit. There is no way an 18hcp would be capable of that and that's when we rack up the scores. We can be consistent for 14-15 holes playing to hcp or lower, but there is always 3-4 holes where its going to be 3/4 shots over par.

    I'm a little higher in summer in a little lower in winter, I mean speeds. Broke 90 in september after playing a lot during august holidays. Solution was to play narrow/though courses to train the ability to minimize mistakes and train recoveries. But also handle though situations better, on the mental side. Then I scored well on my course that felt a lot easier.
    As for the video, it's great that you get in our situations/lies/descent angle problems. But even with a harder course and clubs not suited to the swingspeeds, you both still have a higher skillset and finesse to your shots than the bogey Jim/Bob. Very clear with that bunker shot and rough shots. Still, I'm grateful you spend some of your time doing it for us when you probably want to play that course to your maximum ability. I'm eagerly waiting for the next break 90 video 👍

    Mr. Crossfield- I saw this video a year after its filming, and was very impressed to see (as others commented) how much your rules made your games similar to mine! Except that I have more mis-hits. Unfortunately, the big lesson from this work is that if an average golfer wants to score better he must gain the ability to hit the ball quite long. I don't think that age and treachery alone are going to do it for me.

    Interesting. The harder golf is for you the harder golf is. Thanks D-Loft. 😡😋
    Matts statement mid-way through "It puts your putting under a lot of pressure."
    Quote re-playing to your handicap is illuminating.
    All in, it adds to my focus on practice at the moment. Working predominantly on strike and swing speed (ie "The Lucas move") to put me further down the fairway while at the same time avoiding penalties. This will give me shorter clubs into the green and therefore help me make it easier to hit in the mid 80's etc.
    Ps. My home course of Maroochyriver in Sunshine Coast Qld has greens as fast as the Stadium course at Catalunya.

  • @timputtock2017
    @timputtock2017 5 лет назад

    Definitely an interesting video. It highlights the issues that occur when swing speed is too low and it’s definitely much more challenging to break 90 with the lower distance off the tee. However I play with plenty of guys who struggle to break 90 and hit it well off the tee and the bigger challenge they have is the “Ive got to hit a soft draw with the ball below my feet out of the rough...oh great shot Jim” kind of shots. Even if they are 40 yards further on it’s the recoveries and the shots that then rack up as a result that are the biggest challenges.

    • @timputtock2017
      @timputtock2017 5 лет назад

      To add to this, those guys that are hitting well off the tee and struggling to break 90 certainly have a better chance to break 90 with their extra speed (I think the shots gained explains somewhere that you are better going long and wild), so the challenge of this video holds true. However when I see the guys hitting well off the tee and struggling to hit 90 it usually seems down to decision making. One of the comments Mark made earlier in the year about how he wished Coach would play under the hole is definitely one you see from those that struggle. They just then don’t have the skills to recover from the tough spots like lockey does when they airmail the green from 100yds with a wedge.

    I play off 12 but have only played 32 rounds in the last 2 years since starting again (I played for 11 months about 12 years ago) My biggest thing is pain... If I didnt hurt all the time I would play much better. I usually start out pars and birdies but after a while my back and joints hurt so bad I start hitting poor shots.
    After watching this video I had to go to the range and see what my swing speeds were for all my clubs, I am 1 to 2 mph above tour average for men. Not bad for a 54 year old fat man with 12 bulging disks in my back, pain in every joint, severe fibromyalgia and had 2 surgeries on both legs to rip veins out... : )
    I sure would love to play a round with you guys, Dan or Rory... I would even take pain meds to see how I could do to keep up with you guys

    I broke 100 once last season. Got close this season with a 103. So keep the break 100 and break 90 series coming yes please.

    Great content. I’m now off an Index of 14.2 and find I hit sufficient pars or better to be knocking on 80 regularly. Unfortunately I still plagued by too many double bogies. My best rounds are when I recover/scramble better off my 4 bad tee shots per round.

    Just started breaking 90 on the reg, barely. Still USGA cap at 16.7. Seems that when I find a weak spot in a round, I practice on it and the next round something else is weaker so I practice that. Feels a bit like a hamster on the wheel. Totally agree with the putting. When I’m in the zone putting, those are my lowest rounds. Great vid!

    This is a great video and looking forward to seeing more in the series. First two tee shots could have been me at the same tee on different days. Club yardages... swing speeds... course management decisions are all so familiar. More of Bob and Jim/Jeff please!!!

    I am not worried about score, just trying to get my swing changes to "stick" and NOT shoot 51/39. I think you shared the camera already, but GREAT video quality. Just love these discussion vids....oh, btw. GET UP, DAN!!!

    Excellent experiment. Made me realize how I broke 90 and why am I not consistently breaking 90 from 6400 yard. And all those 3 putts I made are not as unforgivable as I thought.

    Love the video....but it is eye opening. I’m in the lower 80’s consistently and its good to remember why...Short game. I’m not a long hitter and that puts pressure on the rest of my game. Great insight Lads!

    Your average 18 handicapper (i.e. me) is probably going to be struggling with playing shots off uneven lies and out of rough. Fun video to watch and also useful.

    If you're breaking 80 then you're single figures hcap. if you check the stats they have a faster swing speed. Really interesting watching this and almost made me feel good that I swing driver below 90 mph and play off 13/14 . I'd also decided this winter that I'm going to work on more distance and strike and this video has just made me want to double my efforts doing that.

    Coolest vlog yet as I play off 18 ....my goal and I’m trying is to hit it further with all clubs to give myself that height coming into the greens and my putting is now down to two putts .... I agree I only play to my handy cap 1-7 times... but that will change ..I know use a 9 wood hitting 165..and a 7 wood 175/180..

    I did like the vlog
    The Matt tee shots are believable for an 18 handicap but a small percentage of 18 handicaps would be as straight as Mark off the tee. Also shots into the green from more than 150/160 for 18 handicap are more likely to miss the green.
    Mark's 3 putting was totally believable :)

    Great vid again brah. For me, I break 90 easily, and get to low 80s when I'm in play properly off the tee. Hit it straight and it's fairly straightforward, but once I start spraying it (and it usually doesn't matter which club I hit off the tee 😭) then breaking 90 is tough

  • @carpykeith
    @carpykeith 5 лет назад

    That was really interesting! I’ve just turned 60 and noticed a slight loss in distance, I used to be scratch up to mid 20’s and while that would be a big ask, I think I could get a single figure hcp & maintain it for a while as a “last hurrah”!

    I'm working on gaining speed this winter and other swing ideas trying to gain some yards and consistency. Play off 13 but only hit around 16% GIR plotting it around. If I'm going to break 80 and ever get to single figures I think I need to be more aggressive and attack alittle more get my speed up learn to swing it fester (under control) that sort of thing stop plotting/patting around lol. Great content would like to see you do this at Torquay with some clubs suitable for the swing speed would be a good watch ⛳🏌️‍♂️👌
