    My Cambridge Dissertation (with LaTeX source code)🌞: payhip.com/b/L...
    For those of you that are new here: my name is Ellie and I have just finished studying Part III Masters of the Mathematical Tripos at the University of Cambridge (basically a fancy way of saying a Maths Masters lol). I am now going into a full time graduate role as a Space Systems Optimisation Engineer! I love maths, coding and space - I even have a tech channel too :) I'm excited to continue sharing my journey with you all💛

    You sound like me, half a world away. I, too, was enticed by the movie Gifted and did a thesis on fluid dynamics despite my university not offering a course on it. I learned a lot from the Part III lecture notes available online; it is my dream to attend the course, but I was rejected last year. I will stay strong and try again.
    You are absolutely right, there is no reason not to do something you love!
    I was writing a paper on applying generative models in machine learning to generate the Ising spin configurations. I must say that your undergraduate thesis was a very accessible and well-written introduction to the area. Thank you for all the great things you have shared so far.
    From Gifted, I also learned that familial legacy is just as important as the scientific legacy. I am so happy to see you successfully navigating maths and the people in your life. I wish you all happiness in the next chapter of your life. ❤

      Thank you so much for your comment ☺️ I'm so sorry to hear you didn't get through to part iii - don't ever give up on your dreams!
      Wow, that seems crazy to me that you've read my undergrad dissertation - I hope it was okay😂
      You are so right! Thank you so much for your lovely comment again, it means the world to me! Good luck with everything and let me know when you get accepted into part iii💛

    I love hearing about your experiences at Cambridge. Yet, some things are unclear to me. You did a masters in maths, but you talked about taking astrophysics and fluid dynamics. I understand you did applied maths, but where I'm from (Netherlands) we would typically say those subjects belong to a degree in physics. So I am wondering, is there a separate physics degree at Cambridge or would that also be the Part III? Furthermore, the length of Part III is one year if I understood correctly. Yet, in the Netherlands a masters in maths would be two years. So, I am wondering whether there is something like Part IV? Or would that be a PhD position? Anyway, congratulations on obtaining your degree and good luck in your new job!

      Understandable! I get that question a lot 😂 Part iii is extremely mathematically rigorous so everything I took was classed as a 'maths' course because it had *a lot* of maths involved. Fluid Dynamics is something you learn in physics, engineering and other STEM subjects. At Part iii, Fluid Dynamics comes under 'Continuum Mechanics' which is the hardest and most advanced maths courses you can do at part iii. So although the subjects seem 'physics' related, it's basically learning the underlying maths in those areas :) same goes for Astrophysics although I found that maths to be a bit easier than Continuum Mechanics.
      As for length, in the UK almost every Masters course is between 9 and 12 months. I had this discussion with a friend from the US who was also shocked at the length! It's just a typical length for the UK :) there's no such thing as Part IV in Cambridge, just Part IA (first year), Part IB (second year), Part II (third year) and Part III (fourth year - masters year).
      Thank you so much!! :)

    I would really like to hear about your journey with Maths, as I'm currently looking to apply for a Maths degree. Also, would you say that it is better to do a placement year in your degree or seek summer internships on your own during your degree?

      @EllieSleightholm  2 года назад +1

      I'll make a little video about my maths journey! :) Oooo that massively depends. Personally, I didn't choose a placement year because I felt that seeking summer internships gave you enough time to decide if it's a field you want to go into. It also gives you the chance to explore different options. If you know you want to do something wholeheartedly then a placement scheme is probably for you. Personally, I'd recommend doing summer internships! :)
