Thank you all for such a warm reception to the video so far. I wasn't sure how people would feel about it, particularly the part about weaving in this unrelated story about Everest. They say you should grab viewers attention immediately and I guess I decided to tell you an unrelated story for a solid minute and a half. That allegory has been swimming in my head for almost a year and the fact that it resonated with some of you is really special.

    • @Hummeldon

      @@peaman3905 Good question.
In the original the boxes from the Bonus levels weren't required for 100%.
They changed this for Crash 2 and 3, so when the remakes were made Crash 1 was changed to require the bonuses as well.
I "think" this is the fastest run recorded with all boxes from bonuses ruclips.net/video/Ih4KYSFTYFI/видео.html

What an amazing piece Hum, you've really outdone yourself once again.
This video really took me back through the years. I remember watching Cane when he was first lowering the 100% record back in the day, and hanging out with him at multiple GDQs, shopping at old video stores for bizarre PS1 games. I remember taking a train down to see WHiP where we attempted to do a 24 hour stream playing various speedgames where we both fell asleep from exhaustion. Tebt pushing this game to insane heights these days is awesome to see, and it always brings a smile to my face whenever i see him post a new PB on twitter. Congrats to everyone who was involved in the history of this game and the insanely difficult category that is 100%.
I've been a supporter of yours ever since i saw your Resident Evil 4 video, your work boasts incredible editing, good story telling and improvements with every video. I have no words. This is art. Beautiful video, Hum. Thank you so much for this gift you have given our community today.
The Koji curse section is by far my favourite part of the video and my favourite era of all of the ones I've been present for - even more than the current era where I hold the record a decent ways ahead of 2nd. The grind, the late night degen voice calls with Paaws, Rex, and others just getting destroyed by the game for several months and never knowing if today would be the day one of us gets it...were unforgettable. And now it is forever preserved with this video. Wow. It's so nostalgic.

This is such a beautiful homage to the enigma that is Crash 1. It's a legendary game that laid the foundation for one of the greatest game series ever made. I'm not a speedrunner myself but Crash 1 was a massive part of my childhood. Seeing it continue to live on through the speedrunning community like this makes me so happy. Absolutely amazing video, I love hearing about the speedrunning histories of these games I grew up with and telling the story of people that are still running these games and pushing their limits to this day.
Doing a Crash 100% speedrun is probably the most intimidating category to me out of the OG Sprash games. I want to do that at least once, even if my goal is just to survive the run. It's mindblowing to see several full completion runs of the game that are faster than the one any% run I put down in this game.
This was a wonderfully framed story, and the Mount Everest allegory wrapped with the speedrunning story meshed beautifully. Absolutely amazing work, Hum.

I've struggled with being ashamed of things internally and getting myself hung up on stalling out and never doing things out of fear and ridiculing myself, and this just, affirmed me that at 28, finally starting a bunch more nerdy or outsider hobbies is fine. That I can and will keep doing what I love.
I took on trying to speedrun Ninja Gaiden this year, I've gotten into so many more games that I always put off, I've done so much more for me in this last year and hearing you say those affirmative words at the end of this video exactly about the hobbies I love, you man

Absolutely phenomenal video. That was just beautiful, dude. The editing was studio-level, but so personal and human. The themes were poignant, the music was spot-on and the whole video was an inspiration to me as a creator. And it made me want to join the hunt in climbing to a new peak in the game!
My favourite part was touching on the human nature to want to push something to its limits, "because it's there". Discussing the morality between 'wasting time' when a record's inevitably broken, it's one of the reasons I'm conflicted about speedrunning myself. I think to sustainably run, you have to enjoy the journey. The friends you make along the way, the other runners you're inspired from and hopefully inspire in the future, and the thrill of the chase.
That was undoubtedly the best speedrunning documentary I've ever seen, and one of the best videos I've watched period. I'm going to show this to a lot of my friends and come back for inspiration on making my own content! You should be deeply proud of yourself man.

this is one of the best speedrun essays i've ever seen! amazing storytelling and editing [i especially love how a song from the machinarium OST made its way in there]. cane was the first crash speedrunner i watched when i found twitch in 2013, his passion for the game was evident back then. i'm mainly just a lurker/consumer of crash speedrun content [i ran OG & NST 3 but never submitted times] and i'm always blown away at the little details and tech that's present in these games. anyways, great job and keep it up! YT needs more awesome speedrun essays like this, haha.

Absolutely phenomenal, so glad I subscribed to you after watching your Pac-Man Art of Speedrunning video. After a year of absence, you coming back with this, it didn't disappoint; The captions, the graphs, music, the overall presentation/video was flawless! (The section at 51:23 to 54:00 gave me chills the whole way through).
I will be REALLY disappointed and angry if this video doesn't get half a million views (AT LEAST) in the first few weeks. I want this video AND this channel to blow up like all the other great Speedrunning documentary channels.
Also shout-out to my boy Chris for his AMAZING DEADBOLT (at 11:36) and Risk of Rain 1+2 soundtracks, represent!

The only real responsibility we have as human beings is to be ourselves fully.
Not who we want to be but who we really are.
Speedrunners, whether or not they conciously understand this, devote themselves to this expanding of humanity.
'what one man can do. another can do"
If no one said, "what if i could do the impossible?"m wed still be in the caves.
Maybe the best speedrun video ive seen, honestly.

Dude, I have now taken my time to watch this fully and on my own (i can now tell you that the one where you introduce koji is the hypest of your montages), and I finally booted up crash one after 3 years again.
And WHAT THE HELL MAN, it is so damn easy to pick up this submarine jump and get into a flow state with it, even though i havent touched ANYTHING NEAR any speedrun techniques before, ever. This is my first experience with a speedrun technique and lemme tell you, it is SO EXHILERATING to experience the game starting to break down. Like, i constantly go underground, fall into holes where there should be water, et cetera. It is AMAZING to see INSTANT results just with one little trick; i cannot even try to learn wiggling right now because my DPAD is broken, but man
I think I'm gonna play some crash for the next couple weeks , your video just made me feel like I'm playiung the game of my child hood for the verya first time again. It feels like a racing game now compared to what i was used to.

I was starting to think that the original Crash trilogy wouldn't get covered in documentaries like these due to how seemingly simplistic they are, but I've been proven wrong. Some of the movement and skips showcased here had my jaw on the floor. An analogy like mountain climbing is a pretty simple one for speedrunning, but it's put to great use here. I'm gonna have that "because it's there" quote stuck in my head now for sure.

I've seen so many speedrun history/explanation videos (and even tried my hands at making one last year) but this was something else. Every moment in this video meant something, every edit was so clean, and best of all, everything thematically followed you every step of the way. The way you were able to fully wrap up and condense everything we just watched into three words is astounding. I didn't watch this video just "because it's there", its more like you said with crash 2, this video asked me nicely to watch it, and there was no chance I was gonna miss it. Thank YOU for making this video, it truly is a masterpiece.

This part, along with the music
The whole build up to this point, where each and every piece of knowledge they could use about the game and his mechanics was being applied, lowering the total time lower and lower, until that

I cannot believe the algorithm fed me this video just now. I swear to you I have been lamenting the lack of any good deep dive videos into the Crash speedrunning community on RUclips recently. I honestly don’t have words to express how amazing this video was to watch. I witnessed most of Cane’s rise and some of WP’s with my own eyes (Chronicreloader is my handle on Twitch, not a promo, I don’t stream) and have fond memories of my time spent in that community. Hell, even to this day I fall asleep nightly to the RUclips video of one of Cane’s former WR’s. The game itself (first I ever played) and the speed running community as a whole for it is very dear to me. I didn’t watch the streams regularly once Koji came onto the scene, but I was always peripherally aware of the milestones that were being reached. Thank you so much for giving this game’s speedrunning story the chronicling it deserves. Instant favorite. I can’t wait to share it with my mom. Her and I played it a lot when I was just a lad. Good memories. Much love to all.

It warms the cockles of my heart to see such professionalism (in both the video and the speedruns) applied to this diamond-in-the-rough game. I used to dismiss CB1 as clunky and outdated, but I've since matured to appreciate its restrictive controls and troll level design as something of a homage to the classic "NES-hard" platformers.
It's now my fave of the original trilogy, and I've been trying for the past year to complete a 100% no-death run. This challenge is a tough enough peak for me for now, and I would highly recommend it to any CB1 fans who aren't yet at the speedrunner level. After many inevitable failed attempts, it actually makes you resemble the early speedrunners as you try to find the most efficient route.

I dunno man, this whole video have a huge impact on me. All of this screams of passion and dedication. Sitting here, well-knowing the video is about breaking one WR after another, a person who knows what it means to be deeply passionated about one's hobby, this is touching. A lot goes to the editing and the way it's presented.. But this kind of video is sometimes better than watching a movie or even playing a game.
Thank you for touching on one of my first PS games in my childhood. Thank you.
