stellar.
The lost needledrop comment. A well kept secret, hidden from the common commenter... truly a beautiful thing.
A rare melon.
I'll just go ahead and reply to this comment
sluntmania I’ll go ahead and leave a comment here.
Hi
It’s so unusual for something to sound so chaotic and controlled at the same time
yeah something about it is just so captivating. Some of his music sounds pretty fun in multiple windows out of time.
Kinda like... a spiral

His Embouchure is unlike anything I've ever heard. Singing UNDER embouchure WHILE circular breathing? How is this a human being? Give this man awards, immediately.
Holy shit! I came from the Uzumaki trailer but I didn’t think I was hearing a sax playing the entire time! It sounded like a distorted guitar or a violin at times. And it’s just one sax too? I thought there were multiple instruments playing at the same time.
That's the power of Colin Stetson :D you should listen Hereditary soundtrack too, and remember it was also made using just saxes and mister Stetson's throat. Trully amazing
There’s an interesting video of him breaking down how he performs. He’s such a masterful musician!!!

Magnus Cholok Mauser The Hereditary soundtrack rules!
Ya blows my mind to.
Magnus Cholok Mauser I dont think that’s true, I hear trumpets and clarinets as well
I cant even begin to comprehend how much hes doing at once.

when he sings into that saxophone it sounds both like a newborn crying but also like a man in agony while still being melodic. pure emotion. I love it.
Or a baby elephant.
6:09 the spiral is absolutely perfect. Like someone's emotions spinning out of control. Totally badass
What a beautiful Spiral, I love spirals...

6:40 literally like a electric guitar shredding backed with a heavenly choir 😍
This is substantially less creepy with a man playing saxophone as the background as opposed to an evil spiral cloud demon thing
Shut up nerd
Don’t care
Second this
OOHHH REALLY UUHBLULBLY PFFFFPFPFPFPTFPPFFT
That's what he wants you to think
I'm currently learning this technique..I hide in the park at night and make these noises
Brojoni Miles you are ruining teens sexlife.
Im getting circular breathing down, but I really need to work on his fingering
Do you have a saxaphone?
Man wth he's upgrading it ! Sex with sax is the best way
@@latitzouri Sexaphone
When he hums into that thing it sounds like an explosion. One of the best musicians alive.
I don't know what it is about this sound that is so mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful. Amazing what this man can do with a saxophone. Literally sounds like a heavily distorted guitar with a delay pedal

6:25 YO WATCHING HIM DO THAT HIGH PITCHED SCREAM SHOOK ME, HOW IS HE ABLE TO DO BOTH!?!?!?!?
Nicholas LeBlanc he’s god 🙏
He's yelling thru the saxophone with his voice while playing the lines with the instrument itself
I know it's been 4 years, but it bothers me that no one actually got it right. He has a contact microphone on his throat and he's humming those sounds while blowing into the sax
When i watched the Uzumaki trailer i thought there were actual voices, but now i realize he does everything with the sax.
yeah I watched both this and the trailer and I thought they added voices on the trailer, but I watched it again recently and noticed that was not the case.
He’s singing while playing the saxophone with circular breathing. Never seen anyone else pull it off, honestly it’s insane!
He's literally screaming/singing through the saxophone while playing it it's incredible.
@@omninuss6847
Didgeridoo players typically learn how to wail while they buzz their lips playing the instrument. Not sure if Colin Stetson may have adopted this technique from them, but the Australian aboriginals were known to have gotten as much as they could out of the didgeridoos they crafted from termite-carved wood. They've also used the didgeridoo as a percussion instrument while playing, making the player into a one-man band just like Colin Stetson is here.
One of the most amazing performances i've ever heard. I cannot believe he is making all those sounds live, at the same time: simply blows my mind how much skill and effort is put into this.
Listening to this with my cochlea.

Time to get the scissors
What a dreadful bunkhouse, I hope I never have to live in anything like it.

I'm shaking man this dude could steal my soul with his sax and I'd be totally cool with it. This dude is a higher being with that thing
it is not often, that i need a minute of silence just to process something like this. absolutely stunned! the humming with the sax is just haunting.
The sheet music for this would just say "Have a panic attack" along with a bunch of arpeggios.
Currently going through my first read through on Uzumaki.
Rusty None likewise. I found myself looking for spirals irl ofc no such thing as a curse haha
good luck!
I saw the trailer today, it looked pretty interesting. I read that the manga was so good in the comments so I searched the book in amazon to buy it. My brother looked and said that he had the book! So yeah pretty good day for me I'm in chapter 8. This is like the second manga I read in all my life and it's so good I'm excited.
I just finished reading it. Insane. Absolutely horrifying, beautiful, depressing, mesmerizing, sinister, magical, and haunting.
Same, and now Im on a junji ito bender...
7:09 how does he make that noise with his throat and everything else at the same time?

And gives you the look.
"Alexandrian Tria Dear, Join me in the spiral"
How, though? He's like a marathon runner mixed with phillip glass and a PhD in classical saxophone.
Circular breathing
I started crying around the 5-6 minute mark. This is SO beautiful (in the nontraditional sense of the word), and, really, there couldn't have been any other music more fitting for a thing like Uzumaki. I don't think anybody could disagree. Stetson is criminally talented. Words cannot express how his creation makes me feel (not to mention the masterful soundtrack for Hereditary).
I saw him perform live a couple of years ago and it was and still is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Genius.
I remember when I did research on him for a project in one of my classes one thing he said really stood out to me. He said something along the lines of falling in love with doing music wrong on purpose.
It made me realize that there's a balance of predictability and chaos to music and that I love music that skews towards the side of chaos, but doesn't sound very unnatural and out of place.
Among the sef is an extremely good example of what I'm talking about. It's very chaotic and all over the place. Yet it still feels like every note shares it's place with one another.
I can think of 3 artists that push that line past where they should be but still sound beautiful. Colin Stetson, Flume, and Porter Robinson.
Flume pioneered multiple sub-genres of edm and is genuinely a genius when it comes to music. Porter dabbles a bit in experimental stuff but it always sounds good. His song dullscythe is a really good example of that. And he incorporates a lot of unconventional stuff in his normal songs, like the breakdown in mirror. Colin stetson is pushing that line pretty hard. Some of it hits, some of it misses. But I don't listen to saxophone solos (or really any band type music), and I go to listen to some of his songs every so often.
He's pretty incredible at bending the line of what makes music "music"
Saw him at a Bon Iver concert in Orlando. Literally gave me chills and tears when I heard his solo.
I'm not just talking about background or ambient sounds, I don't play sax but the intricacy and endurance of what he's playing is impressive in any place to me.
6:13 Wait does he also do those creepy moaning vocals for the song too? How many windpipes does this guy have?
He does all the sounds you hear at the same time.
Im so late, but he makes the "moaning" with his troath, and yes it is possible but is extremely hard to do it
The freakin moans into the sax are so goddamn unsettling, mans got some amazing skills.
Holy fucking shit I've never seen anything like this.
Contrary of a lot of opinions if find the uzumaki trailer unable to express the true meaning of this song. It was said at an interview, this song is a metaphor of a lonely wale. And frankly when you see it that way. The sheer pain he expresses through the song is so much it can make someone like me cry.
Absolute gorgeous of a play.
the trailer is teasing that the song is gonna be used, and uzumaki is about not being able to escape the town, frankly, nobody can hear the wails of the people
it's a pity you cannot hit like every time you like this song. love it
Can't wait to hear his music when uzumaki comes out
I have watched this multiple times a day for over a week and it has still not gotten old.
i now watch this as part of my morning routine
watching this every morning is one of the only things keeping me alive right now.
its now been half a year
almost a year now
ayyyyyy it's been a year! I didn't miss a single day!
Pure chaos flows through him and his instrument into this world.
This is one of my favourite musicians of all time.
And people still say there's no good new music coming out...
Bloddy hell, this is beautiful.
Honestly one of the most incredible pieces of music I've ever heard. I've been listening to it recently when I go walking/running, and it gives me chills every time. It's fucking insane that it's one dude and one instrument making the music. I love how it starts beautiful and then becomes distorted and haunting. I feel like some music tells an epic story, and this is one. It evolves as it goes on.
I need new lungs after watching this.
This is the best version. A solo symphony, that ebbs and flows and swirls and howls
I feel haunted by this song, in the best way
That's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my entire life.
Just absolutely fucking enthralled with this guy
It's hard to believe this is all from one person in a single take.
Totally inspiring. The guy is like a vortex of notes. Makes me want to do something equally unique with a different artform
licenseless rider same, I'm making a dance solo to his music right now
who would have thought a guy in a tunnel with saxaphone would be one of the best things i've seen all year? "not i" said i
that was killer...
Am I the only one crying out of pure astonishment....
When you remember there are spirals in your ears
When you have curly hair
when you remember you can *become* a spiral :)
When its snail time

👁👄👁✂️
He sounds like playing chordal tapping on the guitar. This guy is incredible.
This sounds so existentially terrifying, otherworldly and incomprehensible but at the same time uplifting and making peace with something beyond.
It's feels like flying through the sky alone and accidentallly finding heaven, then never going back home.
I’ve never seen a saxophone played like it’s an electric guitar. Strong lungs!
haven't been able to stop coming back to this over the past year . i think that i hope i never do
Going on 5 years for me, the guy is something else
John Zorn meets Phillip Glass and a lil more.. pretty cool!
i cried
im 30, im a grown man, why am i crying
thank you so much for making this
To see a human achieve this level of mastery and prominence in something is such a beautiful thing; i'm not quite the musical expert but i can clearly see the amount of dedication and focus it must've take to be able to perform something like this
This is the most incredible thing I've seen this year.
That's one intense dial-up modem.
hard one
💀❤
This is like a haunting; yet relaxing and beautiful melody.
I could sleep and listen to this song for hours
Breathtaking performance
this dude is somethin special.
my inner band geek is fangirling so hardcore right now
I came here for the Uzumaki trailer and this gave me some bone chilling goosebumps
Holy shit. How is this even possible? Hell, even the groaning noises are from the sax. It feels like a bunch of pieces of music being edited together. I mean he’s able to make so may distinct sounds all at once. Fuck!
Edit: typo
I had no idea the saxophone could sound so beautiful and otherworldly
Still love this video! 6:19 is my favorite part, that transition is perfect!
The textures are amazing. First thought Colin was using pedals or any technical support, but NO.
6:11 CRUSHES
His performance in this video conveys a lot of different emotions compared to the original for me, this one feels like a soaring, triumphant spectacle roaring to life in front of me, every peak is just higher than the last, it’s almost fantastical, while the original feels so much more somber and hopeless and terrifying and I don’t even know what it is but I’m in love with it
the way this song is composted is so cool to me, it totally sounds like a doppler effect. it feels like the sound is moving around and around in my head.....kind of like a....spiral😳
holy shit... is that tom hardy playing the xylophone?
proof that man has indeed traveled to the moon and back
This guy is amazing.
Many people would use different sounds or instruments but this guy used only one. I'm really impressed. I like experimental music like this
im glad that i lived to see this
holy fuck
My sentiments exactly.
exactly what i thought
more like "hooooooooly fuuuu.........
I bet the team editing the Uzumaki trailer simply googled "music that sounds like a spiral" and this was the top search result
i feel like that saxophone is just an alien that colin stetson forces noise out of
I just can't explain how I feel when I hear this, I've only felt this few times... Eddie van Halen being one of em. I'm definitely gonna learn the saxophone someday because of this.
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen a human being accomplish.
This is so gorgeous. I cannot even explain the feeling I get watching this.
So glad I watched Hereditary and discovered this crazy music man!
breathtaking.
Dude, colin stetson is a saxophone god

More info please. I can’t find any info about them.

That explains the other song on one of his previous albums called “clothed in the skin of the dead”.

Just replying in case someone gives more info
Sounds interesting, but i cant find anything about them.
this is the art of the spiral.
Everyone’s giving the first song the spotlight but can we talk about how eerie the second one is.
Big thank-you to Sufjan Stevens for sending me here! This is phenomenal and I'm only a couple minutes in.
this is just impressive, very very impressive. I'm in shock
Seeing him actually performing this piece, I get it now. I completely get it now.
That instrument has complete control over his soul. He’s doing everything he can for it and it will never be enough.
The «moaning» at 6:20 is also made with the sax? O.o
Yes it is. He's actually singing those notes but with the distortion coming out of the sax it sounds creepy like that. Lungs of fucking steel.
Crazy amazing stuff man
I can still hear An army of Angry Geese , ducks , swans chasing me.
This is still incredible
Colin Stetson is probably the best musician choice for uzumaki. Both have the common theme of finding beauty in chaos and people who arent into it think youre crazy
Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!
And to think that music is so beautiful.
This is just incredible
This is beautiful.
