    Awesome list. Can't agree more about the old Glenlivet 18. Absolute star, that one. Quite happy to have stowed away Ledaig 18 batch 3 myself. Incredible.
    Didn't see the chocolate milk & WT101 or the white rum coming!
    Cheers Shane. Glad to see you creeping up on 2k subs. Well deserved!

      Yeah it's probably safe to say that I'm the only weirdo mixing Wild Turkey and chocolate milk 😂 it's very good though. Blows away all the store bought Liqueurs and is very cheap to make.
      And that Wray & Nephew is wonderful stuff. Mixed or neat. Cheers Geoff 🥃

      Shackleton was a great pick of yours and got me thinking about how many blended malts make really great daily drams.

    Well done! Especially the thing about mixers. I very seldom drink mixers at home. It's always on parties, on holidays or in bars - and it's nearly never whisky... never thought about that before! Good point! My list would be: daily: Redbreast 12 , impress a guest: Elsburn Sherry Casks 2022 ( yes, german single malt is catching up!), cheap mixer: Bulleit Rye ( if it's got to be whiskey 😉), friday night pour: Bladnoch 11 or Port Charlotte 10, if I'd like something smokey, special occasion: Bunnahabhain 25 ❤

    Great pics! I have the Ledaig 18 “Batch Two Spanish Sherry Wood Finish” that I consider good value even at $110, altho I wish it had more than 46.3%. My Longrow 18 “Heavily Peated” was the most mushroomy I’ve ever tasted, so much that I thought it went bad due to the damaged cork BUT after decanting and waiting it’s been settling down enormously - patience can be incredibly well-rewarded in the WhiskyVerse!

    Hi Shane, love your take on this. Great picks, kudos! My experience with Laphroaig is a bit different though. Older expressions tend to have a tropical fruitiness and complexity that the 10CS simply can’t touch on. Granted, my experience is with the 25yo bottled in 2017 (48,9%) and the 30yo bottled around that same time (43%), so I can’t comment on contemporary expressions really. But to me, an old Laphroaig is really something special!

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  Год назад +1

      Hi Wouter. I did actually think of you after I said that about Laphroaig because I know you like your old Laphies 😉
      Old Laphroaig is good stuff for sure but when it comes to old peaters I do prefer some other distilleries. For me, the joy in Laphroaig is in the young, punchy stuff. I'm feel the exact opposite about Lagavulin interestingly.
      Good point about those fruity notes in old Laphroaig though. I feel that's a combination of the long maturation as well as a changing house style. But you're right that you don't get it in the current younger stuff, which is a shame.

  • @andrewbutler7681
    @andrewbutler7681 Год назад +2

    I always find I struggle with something like this for two reasons: I'm sure a lot of people share the problem that their list would be different on different days, but I also tend not to treat whiskies differently depending on things like price and I like variety above all, so I tend to dot about between bottles that others would put in different categories... However:
    Easy Sipper (most days I don't drink, so Daily Dram doesn't work): Speyburn 18 or anything from Thompson Bros.;
    Impress Your Guests (I could slot the Special Occasion ones in here): A.H. Hirsch 1974 16-year-old bourbon (for those who know American whiskey) or Benromach 1974 41-year-old single cask (vying for most impressive wooden box!);
    Cheap Mixer (since I was diagnosed as diabetic, I have tended to avoid mixed drinks, as finding good diet mixers isn't easy): Famous Grouse or Gosling's Black Seal rum (for a Dark & Stormy, of course);
    Friday Night Pour (again, not something I do often): GlenDronach 18 Allardice or Glengoyne Teapot Dram;
    Special Occasions: I have two 'Birthday Drams' - Highland Park The Dragon 1961 and Ledaig 42 Dùsgadh.
    Only the final category is likely to remain the same for as long as I can make them last...

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  Год назад

      Great question. I'm generally able to appreciate most styles of whisky so I don't think I have too many unpopular opinions like that. The closest one would probably be Balvenie? They're a very well thought of distillery and they're capable of great whisky but I find it hard to get excited about their low ABV releases (which is too many of them).
      Same reasoning with Bowmore. They seem to be trying to convince us that they're a premium, prestige distillery but they rarely do anything that's both affordable and great.
      And Ardmore and Scapa seem determined to not give us anything worth buying but I don't think many people are impressed by them outside of Independent Bottlings 😉
      What are your picks?

      @@benjamincarter6095 ah I love Kilchoman. What don't you like about it?
      True Pulteney has that salty maritime edge but I think perhaps less these days than in the past.
      My problem with Bowmore is that the 12 doesn't work at 40% for me. I don't know why they don't sell something like Legend, No1 or Small Batch at 40% and boost the 12, 15 and 18 to 46% and up the price a little. All problems solved 👌 as it is, if I want something that's not underpowered from Bowmore I'm looking at silly money. I tried one of the Devil's Cask releases. I think it was #3 with a mid 50s ABV and it was very, very good! Significantly better than the 18yo. But also incredibly expensive. I just want something in between those two extremes 🙂 almost all other distilleries have at least one reasonably priced product that's 46% and NCF by now...

      @@WhiskyLock Machir Bay is described as smoothe or delicate by many. For me, it is slightly acidic bordering on acrid, and entirely unmemorable. Sanaig is just another sherry scotch. I appreciate scotches that solidly represent their region and I find Kilchoman underwhelming, especially for an Islay. It feels like an Islay trying to be a Speyside. I'm not sure that is a fair evaluation, but it's never sat right with me. Regardless, it no longer has a place on my shelf. I gave my last bottle to a friend I knew would appreciate it more than I.
