  • You Only Need 5 Whiskies Challenge!
This trend started on Reddit and we've been nominated to take part by ‪@FreedsFirstTime_Whisky_Reviews‬. If you had to choose only 5 whiskies for the rest of our lives, what would they be....in these 5 categories:
    1. Everyday drinker
    2. Impress Your Guests
    3. A Mixer
    4. Friday Night Pour/Something Great
    5. Special Occasion
We made our decisions based on how we felt today and we think this might be different if we were to choose again another time! But all good whiskies we would have time and time again! It was sooooo hard to narrow it down!
    Here are our choices:
    RACHEL
    1. Everyday drinker - Tomain 12 Year Old
    2. Impress Your Guests - Glenallachie 15
    3. A Mixer - Black Bottle
    4. Friday Night Pour/Something Great - Arran Quarter Cask (The Bothy)
    5. Special Occasion - Bunnahabhain 18 Year Old
    JEN
    1. Everyday drinker - Glen Scotia Double Cask
    2. Impress Your Guests - Arran Quarter Cask (The Bothy)
    3. A Mixer - Deanston Virgin Oak
    4. Friday Night Pour/Something Great - Cu Bocan Signature (Peated Tomatin)
    5. Special Occasion - Ledaig 18 Year Old
What would you choose? Did you agree with any of our choices? Do you think we are deluded?!? Let us know in the comments!
This was a really fun wee challenge and we want to nominate some of our other whisky pals to join in! Are you up for the challenge ‪@WhiskyWhims‬ ‪@WhiskyMystery‬ and ‪@gavsdrams‬ ??? We look forward to seeing your choices!

Lately, any day I can get through these strange times with a sound mind is a special occasion. So, right now, my special-occasion go-to impresser is the Kilkerran Heavily Peated (Batch 6-- I stupidly missed the previous batches.) Yeah, I don't try to hide it: I'm definitely in love.

Black Bottle is super solid and versatile. I love the Black Bottle Alchemy Series, which are really meant as standalone whiskies. Julieann Fernandez is such a master of her blending craft.
I think my "everyday drinker" (for now) would be the Black Bottle Double Cask,
my "impress your guests" would be Glenfiddich Project XX,
my "mixer" is Chivas Regal 12 or Bowmore 12 depending on the drink,
my "Friday Pour" would be Kilchoman Sanaig,
my "Special Occasion" WAS Glenfarclas 25 (price just exploded), and now it'd be the Mortlach 16.

Really enjoyed the video. I've seen lots of these with Bourbon. I like the challenge of coming up with a Scotch list. I stuck with mostly readily available picks, no single barrels.
    Every day - Classic Laddie
Impress - JW Island Green. It's friendly enough for newbies, but also interesting enough for experienced drinkers.
Mixer - I normally wouldn't fashion a cocktail with scotch, because the bolder flavors of Bourbon tend to hold up better. So Aberlour A'bunadh.
Friday night pour - Laphroaig Lore (Uigeadail if I can't get Lore)
Special Occasion - really it's a SMWS bottle. But if I'm going with something I can find on a shelf Glendronach 18 Allardice.

Friday night pour/something great: Glen Scotia 15 (because there's alot of Friday nights, cant go too obscure innit)
Special occasion: Macallan 18 1995 (not so much for the taste perhaps, but cause its ridiculously overpriced)

The Malt Activist did this. I'm with Jen here it should be timeless. Top entertainment girls. You are whisky geeks not whiskey snobs so tell me this please. There seems to be a growing trend (its maybe always been there) for the You Tube reviewers to wax lyrical about higher ABVs and 40% is not good enough. Is it a snobbish thing or does the whisky really taste better plus it makes the whisky more complex there more to talk about . I must add I'm very new to the whisky lifestyle. Cheers

    • @georgeobrien9748

    • @jasoncoates1835
      @jasoncoates1835 Год назад +1

Once you get your palate acclimated to higher strength spirits, you'll understand. The ethanol carries the bulk of the flavor, so it's just richer and more concentrated than you get at 40%. It's hard to go back.

    • @TheGrailTastings
      @TheGrailTastings  Год назад +1

You can totally get really good 40% whisky in our opinion. Its not so much about the %abv but the chill-filtered v unchill-filtered. When its chill-filtered it can be bottled at the minimum abv of 40% when its un-chillfiltered the oils haven't been removed before bottling and it can go cloudy, especially if bottled at a lower abv. To keep the whisky from going cloudy, it is bottled at a higher abv, usually 46% or above. Although we think it can probably be a snobbish thing as well, we definitely find that a 40% abv (and therefore chill-filtered) dram can sometimes feel a little thinner and not have as much of a finish.
