This video has made me fall in love with these skinks. After doing more research it seems they are an extremely unique reptile in that they form monogamous mating pairs and live in a sort of gidgee society! They are so fascinating and seem potentially totally more intelligent than the usual lizard, I love these guys. Too bad they will have to wait for when I have a grand or two to burn
I think you should also consider their age length in hardiness. I know a lot of people who got into the reptile pet keeping cause they liked that they could live a long while. That may not be true for every reptile but I think that info would be nice to have in future pet rating videos.
Agreed. Most of the reptiles I suggest live a similar amount of time, but when we get to talking about turtles and chameleons it will definitely be a factor.
@@wildabeeest638 damn, can’t believe I wrote this comment 3 years ago! I was so young damn...... time goes by so fast, I remember this was when I wanted to get my first reptile and was debating between which lizard to get. I wish I was still a kid.....
Could you please do a Gidgee vs Bluey episode? I’d like to see some head to heads with some Aussie herps, and can’t think of anything better than doing that episode. :)
I actually discovered your chanel today, and after a couple videos in, you already became one of my favorite reptile youtuber. All of your videos are so informative but not boring what so ever. I love the bloopers at the end of the videos. I also like that you handle the reptile that you are talking about throughout the whole video. And idk you just give out such a calm, fun vibe.
Gidgee means "spear" in the Noongar Australian aboriginal language. Western Australia's people for many 10s of thousands of years. Gidgegannup (a town near me) means "a place where spears are made!" I love our Egernias, so many amazing friendly species native to my state!
Its my understanding that the skink is so named for its tendency to live on a gidgee tree. Is a gidgee tree typically what the people made their spear shafts from?
i've found ONE breeder of these wonderful lizards! my google search came up with mostly people in the UK, but i've found one in the US, and i just hope and dream to own one some day. thanks to you, they're my new favorite reptile!
You have actually shown how beautiful and cool they can be. Lol, now my long term goal is to have a vast collection of them. By the way, could you do videos on chamaleons and crocodile skinks?
After this video I got myself a pair! I did a bunch more research, including some scientific papers on them from Australia, they are quite interesting because they live in colonies of up to 16 , and they mate monogamously , and there are some recorded cases of them protecting there young, which is VERY VERY unique for a reptile. However one thing that I think needs to be made clear for future owners, is you should not really just house one on its own , this is about as social as a reptile comes , they know individuals within there colony in nature and as I said above, they mate for life. Something to know if your considering purchasing some Gidgee skinks! There Great, a bit shy, but as Clint says, THERE AWESOME!
@@sparkdrive2900 ? why be a jerk for no reason? is your logic that there are no such things as experts on different species of animals? there is no such thing as scientific data gathered on animals?

I caught one in a stack of old pallet boards i was moving last night. (think it was a Cunningham actually) Admitedly it was cold but it made no attempt to move or wiggle at all. You guys should do an episode on Kenyan Zebra Skinks. Very cool species that live in multiply generational communities. Not to much info out there on them though.
In the vein of spiky boys I’d love to see you cover the Madagascar Spiny Tail Iguana. I’ve got one and I’d love to see how they stack up. The cyclops is surely beautiful
Sounds like if they get popular enough to be widely bred and available (dropping the price in the process) you're going to have a new contender for the top spot!
I would say freezing responses aren't the same as being handleable and that these guys are literally nothing like blue tongues. Are they fun little animals? Yes. But to get them tame, you need to spend a considerable amount of dedicated time, and they still aren't handleable (though they will come running to you and eat out of your hands).
I can´t really have a lizard in the next couple of years anyways because I want to get a solid stand in life first to see if I´ll be able to keep one for 20+ years. Meaning I´ll have enough time to search for a Gidgee, my ultimate reptile so far
Great, professional energy. I’d suggest doing a series though, instead of having such similar titles! (Best lizard pet?) best of luck with your channel!
A Relevant Name I've been taking care of blue tongues for a long while, and have recently been taking care of one I bought myself. They're not "fine" with being picked up from above, thats like the only time they freak out. You oughta pick em up from the side.
To all my fellow mates in Australia, this lizard is perhaps the best you’re going to look at, get it, you won’t regret it. The reason this guy’s giving such a low rating and saying that they’re unavailable and expensive, is because he’s American, and they haven’t reached a point yet in America where they’re common.
You should drop availability from the scoring. Ive had it go both ways: you say something is readily available or cheap, but i can't find one to save my life or they are very expensive, OR you say something is hard to find or expensive, but i find multiple breeders with them and they are cheaper than expected. Gidgee skinks are easy to find right now and not too expensive, so thowing a 1 at them for availabilitg really skews their overall score way lower than it sbould be for me.
Their poop is small because they're small - Um so we kept seeing poop around the property and couldn't figure out what critter that was. We looked up possum poop, and just anything we could think of - turned out it was toad poop . They're not that big but the POOP was huge for their size.

no, that's called being cage defensive, nothing to do with a bond, nor is it "grumpy".
